Melvin, Charles "CHUCK"
Charles "Chuck" Russell Melvin, Jr. of Denton, Maryland died Thursday, April 22, 2010 in Memorial Hospital at Easton, MD. He was 51 years old.
Born in Ft. Knox, Kentucky, on April 9, 1959, Mr. Melvin was the son of the late Charles R. and Gloria Modesitt Melvin.
He graduated from Lake Forest High School, class of 1977 and from Delaware Technical and Community College in 1979. He was a millwright.
Mr. Melvin is survived by one son, Charles R. Jester and his companion Candy Moss; two grandchildren: Daeman and Collin; two sisters: Charlene K. Howard and her husband Larry and Dolly G. Torres and her husband Ricky; one brother, Roger R. Melvin, Sr. and his wife Cathy; several nieces and nephews that loved him dearly; and his beloved pet, Grizzy.
Funeral services will be 3 o'clock Wednesday at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 South Second Street in Denton where friends may call an hour before the service.
The interment will be private.

Turner, Mary F.
Mary F. Turner of Ridgely, MD, formerly of Centreville, MD, died Sunday, June 27, 2010, at the Homestead Manor in Denton, MD. She was 89 years old.
Born in Greensboro, MD, on May 9, 1921, Mrs. Turner was the daughter of the late John Wesley Thorpe and Lyda Dickerson Thorpe. Her husband, William R. "Sleepy" Turner, died Nov. 21, 1992.
Mrs. Turner had owned and operated Turner's Wallpaper and Paint store in Centreville for many years. She had also worked for Chesapeake Publishing for 10 years. She was a graduate of the Lifetime Career School in Los Angeles, CA for doll repair, completing a 2 year course in 8 months. She moved to Ridgely from Centreville in 1990. She liked to crochet, do ceramics and was a "Doll Doctor".
Mrs. Turner is survived by one daughter with whom she lived, Vicki King and her husband, Jack, of Ridgely; one son, William R. Turner and his wife, Barbara, of Wilmington, NC; two sisters: Caroline Dean of Greensboro, MD and Agnes Moffett of Hartly, DE; three ½ sisters: Margaret Schrock, Lily Alexander, and Cecelia Thorpe; two ½ brothers: Wilbur Thorpe and Chris Thorpe; nine grandchildren: Lynn Marshel Humpleby, Deborah Lisa Parks, William C. Cooper, III, William Robert Turner, III, Philip D. Starkey, Jr., Paul D. Starkey, Kimberly A. Kempel, Kenneth S. King, and Karl L. King; and 21 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Joanne Cooper; a grandson, Patrick D. Starkey; and two ½ brothers, John (Buddy) Thorpe and Jerry Thorpe.
The funeral service will be 11 AM Thursday, July 1st, at the Moore Funeral Home, PA, 12 S. Second St., in Denton where friends may call from 6 until 8 on Wednesday evening. The interment will be in the Chesterfield Cemetery in Centreville, MD.

Stubbs, Melissa
Melissa Dee Stubbs, 36, of Harrington, DE, had bravely fought Lymphoma cancer for two years, but died peacefully with her family at her bedside on Thursday, April 22, 2010, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA, . She is now resting in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She was born on April 9, 1974, in Marshalltown, Iowa. Melissa was the daughter of Jeffrey Mast of Magnolia, DE and Carol Smith Cagle of Harrington. She was a 1992 graduate of Milford High School and had graduated from the Del Tech Nursing Program with top honors.
Melissa was a Licensed Practical Nurse and had worked for eighteen years at Christiana CareVNA. She loved baking, gardening, and spending time outside with family. But, most of all, she loved her husband, children, and all of her family; and she loved her church family at the Calvary Wesleyan Church in Harrington to which she belonged.
In addition to her mother and father, Melissa is survived by her husband, Robert "Rob" L. Stubbs, Jr. of Harrington; two daughters: Emily Stubbs and Sarah Stubbs, and a son, Collin Stubbs, all at home; two sisters: Christina Mast of Harrington and Michelle Mast of Harrington; one brother, Ryan Mast of Milford, DE; her maternal grandmother, Marie Smith of Lincoln, IA; her paternal grandmother, Margaret Klink of DeKalb, IL; her paternal grandfather, Dale Mast of Brighton, CO; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, James Smith, and her step-father, Rick Wagner.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon, Tuesday, April 27th, at the Calvary Wesleyan Church in Harrington, where friends may visit with the family from 10am until Noon before the service. The officiating Pastor will be Rev. Thomas A. Dill, Sr. of the Church of The Nazarene in Roanoke, VA, assisted by the Calvary Wesleyan Church Sr. Pastor, Rev. Kenneth B. Figgs and the Assistant Pastor, Rev. Barry L. Cauthren. The interment will be in the Denton Cemetery at 24865 Meeting House Road in Denton, MD 21629.

Merriken, Mabel Gene
Mabel Gene Merriken of Denton, MD, died Monday, November 15, 2010, in the Memorial Hospital in Easton, MD. She was 84 years old.
Born at home in Willoughby, MD on May 31, 1926, Mabel Gene was the daughter of the late Gaylord Porter Ivens and Clara Onita Boyles Ivens. She was married to James W. Merriken of Denton from 1950 to 1978.
Mabel Gene graduated from the Tri-County High School in Queen Anne in 1943. She pursued higher education at Goldie Beacom College and began a career as Legal Secretary. Moving to Denton in 1950, she worked for numerous judges in the Caroline County Courthouse before becoming the Deputy Clerk of the Court in Talbot County for nineteen years. She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Denton where, after retirement, she worked for several years as secretary.
Instead of hobbies, Mabel Gene liked to socialize. For many years, she entertained family and friends at her home on Second Street, mostly for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. She loved to dress in costume for any holiday and her imagination knew no bounds. She enjoyed going to the Caroline Country Club for dinner, an establishment she joined and supported for many years.
Mrs. Merriken is survived by her daughter, Gayle I. Merriken of Boca Raton, FL and her son, James W. Merriken, Jr. and his wife Darlene of Queen Anne, MD. She was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Mae Ivens.
A memorial service will be 11 AM Friday, November 19th, at the Christ Episcopal Church on Gay Street in Denton. The interment will be private in the Chesterfield Cemetery in Centreville, MD.

Van Wyne, Richard T.
Richard T. Van Wyen of Ridgely, MD died Monday, July 26, 2010, at his home. He was 78 years old.
Born in Bay Shore, NY on April 16, 1932, Mr. Van Wyen was the son of the late George Van Wyen, Sr. and Henrietta F. Tucker Van Wyen.
Mr. Van Wyen was a US Army Korean War Veteran. He moved to Ridgely in 1972 from Bayport on Long Island in NY where he had owned and operated a clam dredging business. In Ridgely, he trained horses for harness racing for many years. After he retired in the late 1980's, he had owned and operated the Moby Dick's Pet Shop in Ridgely for several years.
Mr. Van Wyen is survived by his wife, Joan A, Van Wyen of Ridgely; three daughters: Lee L. Sponaugle and her husband Ronald of Stevensville, MD, Meryl L. Geib and her husband Randy of Ridgely, and Shari L. Ostrowski and her husband Joe of Bozman, MD; one brother, George Van Wyen, Jr. of new Providence, PA; eight grandchildren: Howard C. Andrew, Brian J. Geib, Brent D. Geib, Tyler J. Geib, Jason Sponaugle, Jessica Sponaugle, Jodie Sponaugle, and Justin Sponaugle; and four great grandchildren: Addyson Andrew, Wyatt Andrew, Lexus Bridge, and Hunter Colombo.
The funeral services will be 11 AM Thursday, July 29th, at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second Street in Denton, MD where friends may visit with the family from 6 until 8 on Wednesday evening. The interment will be in the Eastern Shore Veteran's Cemetery in Beulah near Hurlock, MD.

Hastings, Bernice Wooters
Bernice W. Hastings of Federals burg, MD, died Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at her home. She was 102 years old.
Born near Denton, MD, Mrs. Hastings was the daughter of the late W. G. Wooters and Nettye Porter Wooters. Her husband, G. Bert Hastings, died December 28, 1992.
Mrs. Hastings was a graduate of Caroline High School in Denton and then Washington College in Chestertown, MD. She was a teacher and a Librarian, starting in Greensboro, MD and at Col. Richardson in South Caroline County from which she retired in the late 1960's. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also a member of the Caroline County Retired Teachers Association and the Women's Auxiliary of the Memorial Hospital in Easton, MD. She was also a long-time member of the Union United Methodist Church in Federalsburg.
Mrs. Hastings is survived by a nephew, Gary H. Hastings and his wife Diane of Prince Frederick, MD; a niece, Janet L. Griffin of Indianapolis, IN; her sister-in-law, Inez H. Bowen of Prince Frederick, MD; and grandnieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be 1 PM Friday, September 17th, at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second Street in Denton, MD where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The interment will be in the Denton Cemetery.

Brubaker, William Robert
W. Robert Brubaker of Denton, Maryland died Wednesday, August 5, 2010 at his home. He was 83 years old.
Born at home in Oil City, near Denton, Mr. Brubaker was the son of the late Robert Moore Brubaker and Marguerite Anise Wyatt Brubaker. He was a WWII veteran. After the war, he drove a truck and farmed.
Mr. Brubaker is survived by his wife, Elva Brubaker of Denton; one son, William R. Brubaker, Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Denton; and one sister, Anna D. Jones of Denton. He was predeceased by two sisters: Marie Spence and Stella Cannon.
The services are private for the family only.
