Braswell, Robert W.

Navy

FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS

Robert W. Braswell, 84, of Secretary, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2008, at his home. He was born in Georgia on July 15, 1924 and was a son of the late Floyd and Daisy Parker Braswell.

Mr. Braswell grew up and attended school in North Carolina. In 1943 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in World War II, retiring as Master Chief sonarman in 1974. He loved his country and was a member of the VFW Post 7937 in Greensboro, MD and the American Legion Post 243 in Hurlock.

On December 30, 1961 he married the former Marie Edgar. After his retirement from active military service, he continued his career in sonar technology, working as a Sonar Technician for General Dynamics (Electric Boat division) in Groton, CT for 16 years. He retired in 1990.

Mr. Braswell loved spending time with his family, reminiscing about his Navy days, puttering around the house and yard, and tending flower and vegetable gardens.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marie Braswell of Secretary, and four children: Kathleen of Secretary; Donna and husband Hans of Portsmouth, RI; Betty and husband Andy of Tiverton, RI; and Lloyd and wife Sun-Cha of Enterprise, AL. Mr. Braswell also leaves four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry Braswell; a niece Ann; and a nephew Lewis.

The funeral will be held on Monday, December 29, 2008 at 2:00 pm, in the chapel of the Eastern Shore Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Beulah. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Rd., Cambridge, MD 21613; and/or to Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Tolley, Marcella P.

Marcella P. Tolley, 84 of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge on Wednesday December 24, 2008. She was born at Bishops Head on July 19, 1924, and was a daughter of the late Ford and Ada Meredith Pritchett.

She attended schools at Crapo. Some years ago she was married to Herbert H. Tolley. Mr. Mr. Tolley passed away on February 20, 1986. Some years ago she had worked at the Phillips Packing Co. in Cambridge and later picked crabs at W.T. Ruark, and later for Kool Ice. She had also operated Marcelle's Restaurant on Race Street for several years. She also managed the Cambridge Country Club for a number of years. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Choptank Memorial Post 7460 and Dorchester Post # 91 American Legion and was also a member of Cambridge Lodge No. 1211 Loyal Order of Moose. She enjoyed sewing, cooking as well as spending time with her family. She was stricken suddenly on Friday and was taken to Dorchester General Hospital where she passed away on Wednesday morning.

Survivors include two daughters Charlotte Ann Willey and her husband William E. Willey of Cambridge and Carole Wroten Haring and her husband Michael L. Haring of Cambridge, seven grandchildren Margie Willey of Crisfield, Mary Rager of Martinez, GA, Marsha Willey of Cambridge, Stephen Andrews of Easton, Jennifer Sullivan of Natick, MA, Michael Andrews of Grafton, MA and Tammy Wroten of Fruitland, she is also survived by 14 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a son Charles F. Wroten a sister Emma Pritchett and two brothers Ford P. Pritchett and Earl Pritchett.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dorchester Co. Humane Society, P.O. Box 132, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Barnes, Kenneth L.

Kenneth L. Barnes, 90, of Cambridge passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was born at Baltimore on July 27, 1918 and was a son of the late Charles Ellis and Edith May Insley Barnes.

Mr. Barnes attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1936. On May 12, 1951 he married the former Blondy Murphy. She passed away on August 3, 2004. At the age of 18 he went on the Cambridge City Police Department and at that time he was the youngest member of the police force. Some years ago he had worked for Charles E. Brohawn Bros. and through the local carpenters union. Mr. Barnes had worked on a number of projects including the first Chesapeake Bay Bridge. For a number of years he was self employed in the construction business and for eight years had taught at the Dorchester County Vo-Tech Center until he retired. He was a member of the Bucktown United Methodist Church and also was a member of Cambridge Lodge No. 1272 B.P.O.E.

He is survived by a daughter Donna M. Gorski of Secretary, two sons William T. Barnes of Fishing Creek and Edward E. Barnes of Cambridge. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a son C. Kenneth Barnes, a daughter Deborah B. Phillips, two sisters Dorothy Furr and Thelma Poole and a brother Charles Norman Barnes.

Pallbearers will be Walter Kurth, Ricky Rossi, Toby Adams, Franklin Knauer, Vernon Lowe and James Dayton.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with Rev. Mary Ann Farnell and Rev. Pardee Bramble officiating. Burial will follow at Bucktown Churchyard. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Bucktown Cemetery Fund, c/o Franklin Knauer, 3275 Knauer Road, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the Alzheimers Association Eastern Shore Chapter, 209C Milford Street, Salisbury, MD 21804.

Tubman, Olga J.

Olga J. Tubman, 82 of Cambridge, passed away at the Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge on Thursday May 1, 2008, and will be missed by all those whose lives she touched. She was born at Wingate on June 28, 1925, and was a daughter of the late Ogle Zebulon and Roberta Powley Jones.

Olga attended Cambridge High School where she excelled in CHS sports, lettering in basketball, volleyball and tennis. She graduated in the class of 1942, and was devoted to class reunions, the best being in 2007 held at Portside in Cambridge. Olga was once proudly featured on the front page of the Baltimore Sun for her participation in one of the first annual Dorchester Outdoor Shows. During WW II she worked for the U.S. Navy, and after the war she worked in the family jewelry business. Olga took great pride in dressing the store windows, especially around the holidays. She was a communicant of Christ Episcopal Church where she helped serve on soup day every month. Also she was a member of the Dorchester Arts Center, as well as a former member of the Cambridge Country Club and Cambridge Yacht Club. Olga devoted her life to her family, most of all to her mother “Bert”. She took great pleasure in giving her theme based birthday parties until she passed away at the age of 103 in 2007. They were both regularly seen having lunch at one of the favorite spots, either Shirley’s, Doris May’s or Hyser’s at noon time.

Olga was a loving wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother as well as mother in law. She was also an avid animal lover. She fed the yard birds and other animals every day. She could never leave any animal that was hurt or lost until she could find their owner, or get them water, food or help. All of her life she had a soft spot for animals.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years William W. Tubman, Sr., of Cambridge, one son Dr. William W. Tubman, Jr. and his wife Anna Ruth Tubman of Chestertown, one daughter Tracey Kim Gynan and her husband Bernard Gynan of Virginia Beach, VA, four grandchildren Kelly Tubman and her friend Charlie Chubet of New York, Rachel Crampsey and her husband Kevin Crampsey also of New York, Brittany Gynan and Jacob Gynan both of Virginia Beach, VA. She is also survived by a sister Jackie Vickers and her husband Walter Vickers of Cambridge, one nephew Judd Vickers and his partner Greg Partoo of Cambridge.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Michael D. Reddig officiating. Interment will follow at Christ Episcopal Churchyard. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Active pallbearers will be Bryan Pritchett, William C. Press, Richard Meekins, David Keyes, Richard Blake and Terry Tubman. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Warner, Judd Vickers and Greg Bartoo. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, MD 21613, or to the Dorchester Co. Humane Society, P.O. Box 132, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Rende Sr., Frank Arthur

Age: 66 Address: Denton, MD Died at: Greater Southeast Community Hospital, Washington, DC

Background: Mr. Rende was an avid horse trainer and driver. He belonged to the United States Trotting Association, the Cloverleaf Harness Racing Association and the Maryland Farm Bureau. Mr. Rende was a dedicated Western Maryland College Dad and his hobbies included ocean fishing and rabbit hunting. He will be remembered for the love that he had for his wife Janice and his passion for the Italian Opera.

Davis, Leonard Charles

Leonard Charles Davis, born September 6, 1947, died November 6, 2000 of natural causes at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland.

Lenny’s hobbies were fishing and antique shopping. He had a million dollar smile which we will all miss. He was a carpet technician for Chaillet-Nichols, Inc. and will be greatly missed there.

Surviving is his girlfriend, Judy Gorman, one son, W. Lee Davis of North Carolina; two sisters and three brothers.

A gathering will be held at 214 Mallard Lakes on Saturday, November 18, 2000 at 1:00 PM.

Boone, Gertrude R.

Gertrude R. H. Boone of Federalsburg died on Saturday, November 25, 2000 at her home. She was 80. She was born on April 6, 1920 in Frederick, Maryland the daughter of the late Franklin Hilderbrand and Delphia Folgle Hilderbrand.

She worked in health care as a Nurse's Aide.

She is survived by a daughter, Bessie Berlin and a son-in-law, Robert Berlin of Federalsburg, a grand daughter, Sharon States and her husband Kenneth of Preston, and four great-grandchildren: Melissa States, Bryan States, Brittany States and Shawn States all of Preston. Three brothers, Charles Hilderbrand, William Hilderbrand and Franklin Hilderbrand and a sister, Alice Virts preceded her in death.

In her liberal giving of herself, she has donated herself to medical research. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the American Lung Association, Post Office Box 2231, Baltimore, MD 21203-2231
