Emma G.M. Weddle

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Emma Grace Miller Weddle, 91, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997, at St. Catherine's Nursing Center, Emmitsburg.

Born Feb. 19, 1906, in Emmitsburg, she was the daughter of the late John T. and Sarah Tressler Miller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Libert S. Weddle, in 1971.

She was employed by St. Joseph's in Emmitsburg. She later was employed by Emmitsburg and Frederick Sewing Factory. She retired from Claire Frock in Thurmont, Md., after 35 years.

She was a life member of Thurmont United Methodist Church.

She was a member of I.L.G.N.R.F. Union.

She is survived by one daughter, Georgette S. Brown of Thurmont, Md.; two sisters, Mary Valentine of Seven Valleys, Pa., and Lotice "Sis" Springer of Emmitsburg; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice Falconer, Bertha Cool and Jane Wilhide; and seven brothers, Herbert Miller, William Miller, Charles Miller, John Miller, Irvin Miller, Howard Miller and Harry Miller.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St., Thurmont. The Rev. D. Matthew Poole will officiate. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open today from 1 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Thurmont United Methodist Church, 13880 Longs Road, Thurmont, Md. 21788; or to St. Catherine's Nursing Center, 331 S. Seton Ave., Emmitsburg, Md. 21727.

E. Woodrow Collins

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - E. Woodrow Collins, 85, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born July 23, 1912, in White Hall, Va., he was the son of the late Charles Edgar and Edith Braithwaite Collins.

He was a retired orchardist, and the foreman of Cumberland Valley Orchard, which was owned by Bruce Eyler and the late Dr. A.B. Eagle.

He was a member and elder of Little Falls Presbyterian Church, and a member and past senior counselor, U.C.T.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Whitacre Collins; two daughters, Norma Gerbozy of Alexandria, Va., and Judy Rankin of Martinsburg; six sisters, Gladys DuBose of Marlowe, W.Va., Carrie Whitacre of Bunker Hill, W.Va., Anna Linton of Roscommon, Mich., Margaret Rinker of Reliance, Va., Catherine Collis of Inwood, W.Va., and Mildred Dawson of White Hall; three brothers, Howard Collins and John Collins, both of Inwood, and Robert Collins of Martinsburg; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Peggy Porterfield; three sisters, Hilda Clark, Ida Crim and Virginia Minnick; and one brother, Thurman Collins.

Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. John E. Wright will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Little Falls Presbyterian Church, Route 4, Box 329-FC, Falling Waters, W.Va. 25419.

Robert D. Wysong

DeBARY, Fla. - Robert D. Wysong, 71, of DeBary, died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, at Mariner Health Care Center, DeBary.

He was born in Detroit.

He was a graduate of Kenyon College of Ohio.

He retired from the land development and construction industry in the Washington, D.C., area.

He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a navigator and navigation instructor.

He enjoyed photography and model railroading.

He is survived by two daughters, Constance Kaffman of Sayville, N.Y., and Elise Cesare of Islip Terrace, N.Y.; one son, David Wysong of Wheaton, Md.; one brother, Harry Swink of Madison, Wis.; one stepdaughter, Verna Marie Kirkhart of Mauton, Calif.; one stepson, Maurice "Butch" Jaillet Jr. of Washington, D.C.; and his caregiver, Jane Wysong of DeBary.

Arrangements are by National Cremation and Burial Society in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Mary L. Bard

WILLOW STREET, Pa. - Mary L. Bard, 92, of 300 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, at Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, Pa.

Born in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Grant and Jessie Humelsine Potterfield.

She was a graduate of the former Maryland State Normal School, now known as Towson State University.

Her husband, the Rev. James Thoburn Bard, died in 1986.

She taught grade school at Washington Street School in Hagerstown for three years in the 1940s, and at Gillman School for Boys in Baltimore for four years.

She was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church on Willow Street.

She is survived by one niece, Mary L. Thompson of Holden, Mass.; three grandnieces, four great-grandnieces, and one great-grandnephew.

Arrangements are by Charles Snyder Funeral Home in Lancaster, Pa.

Mitzie M. Netz

Mitzie M. Netz, 58, of 15739 Spade Road, Hagerstown, died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 30, 1938, in Antrim Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Mary Ada Hill Hornbaker and Raymond Yeager.

She was employed by Colton Villa Nursing Home, retiring in 1992.

She was a member of Mt. Calvary Church of God, Clear Spring.

She is survived by her husband, David Grover Netz Sr.; four daughters, Lenora Barnhart and Yvonne "Bobbie" Bryan, both of Hagerstown, Karen Hornbaker of Mercersburg, Pa., and Joyce Mackey of Waynesboro, Pa.; one son, David G. Netz Jr. of Hagerstown; four sisters, Bernice Aiken and Connie Bell, both of Hagerstown, and Donna Hose and Darlene McPherson, both of Clear Spring; three brothers, Leonard Rigel of Clear Spring, William Hornbaker of Newport News, Va., and Daniel Hornbaker of Falling Waters, W.Va.; her foster mother, Edna Rigel of Hagerstown; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Robert E. Timmons will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. For the convenience of family and friends, the funeral home will be open today after 9 a.m.

Ernest C. Sheppard

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Ernest Clayton Sheppard, 92, of Hedgesville, died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, at Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Born Feb. 14, 1905, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charles William and Flora Belle Johnson Sheppard.

His wife, Edith Claire Somers Sheppard, died in 1986.

He attended Red Hill School in Morgan County.

He drove a team of mules and worked in local orchards. He later worked for the B&O Railroad. From the mid-1940s to the mid-1960s, he worked as a riveter at Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown. He later worked with both Lloyd Lutman's and John Reddick's orchards. Prior to retiring, he worked with Bradley Kesecker Contracting, Martinsburg, W.Va.

He attended Chestnut Grove Church, Hedgesville.

He is survived by four daughters, I. Louise Souders of Berkeley Springs, Phyllis J. Brown and Lacy J. Light, both of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Edna P. Ketterman of Frederick, Md.; two sons, George E. Sheppard of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Charles C. Sheppard of Hedgesville; three sisters, Beatrice C. Rankin, Vietta P. Weigle and Ida "Peggy" Huffman, all of Hedgesville; his primary caregiver and daughter-in-law, Catherine C. Sheppard of Hedgesville; 29 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Frances V. Bell; two brothers, Morgan W. Sheppard and James V. Sheppard; and three grandchildren.

Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Hennis H. Fox will officiate. Burial will be in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today for the convenience of friends.

Memorial donations may be made to Pleasant View Community Center, Route 3, Box 263, Hedgesville, W.Va. 25427.

Marvin L. Burton

HANCOCK - Marvin L. "Buddy" Burton, 69, of Baptist Road, died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born in Round Top, near Hancock, he was the son of the late Sherman Samuel and Grace Viola Walls Burton.

He retired from Western Maryland Railway after 40 years of service as a foreman and mechanic. He then worked for Washington County Parks as a guard.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in Germany.

He was a member of Star Hope Chapel, Williamsport.

He also was a member of AFL-CIO Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way, and Joseph C. Herbert Post 222 American Legion in Clear Spring.

He is survived by his wife, Eva V. Snyder Burton, whom he married Aug. 4, 1950; two daughters, Irene Rosenberry of Indian Springs and Ruby Starliper of Clear Spring; one sister, JoAnn Price of Hancock; two brothers, Sherman Burton Jr. of Indian Springs and Robert L. Burton of Clear Spring; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Naomi Burton.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Star Hope Chapel, 22 S. Artizan St., Williamsport. The Rev. Kenneth White and the Rev. George Lashley will officiate. Burial will be in Parkhead Cemetery in Big Pool, with full military rites conducted by Joseph C. Herbert Post 222 American Legion.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, today from 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday. For the convenience of friends the funeral home will be open from 2 to 9 p.m.

Audrey K. Ingram

SMITHSBURG - Audrey K. Ingram, 81, of Pleasant Valley Road, died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, at Western Maryland Center, Hagerstown.

Born May 21, 1916, in Pleasant Valley near Smithsburg, she was the daughter of the late Ira L. and Nellie L. Wolfe Wolf.

She was employed by the National Park Service at Catoctin Mountain Park.

She was a member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church.

She is survived by five sisters, Bernice V. Sease of Greencastle, Pa., Ruth G. Ingram of Greensburg, Md., Evelyn R. Hessong and Mary M. Lewis, both of Smithsburg, and Jane M. Grossnickle of Myersville; four brothers, H. Kenneth Wolf of Hagerstown, Nevin L. Wolfe of Cascade, John D. Wolfe and Robert L. Wolfe, both of Smithsburg; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg. The Rev. Ronald Beverlin will officiate. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Douglas H. Hitchcock

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Douglas H. Hitchcock, 80, a resident of Manorcare Health Services, and formerly of Windmere Circle, Waynesboro, Pa., died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1997, at the nursing home.

Born July 25, 1917, in Glasgow, Scotland, he was the son of the late Charles and Rose Lappin Hitchcock.

His wife, Anna K.S. Dunlop Hitchcock, died in 1993. They were married July 28, 1943.

He graduated from high school in Scotland, and after moving to the United States, graduated from college with a degree in education.

He was employed by the Washington, D.C., school district as a middle school teacher, and prior to retiring in 1982, taught at the University of the District of Columbia.

He served as an aircraftsman in the Royal Air Force during World War II.

He enjoyed playing golf and attending Washington Redskins football games.

He is survived by one daughter, Rhonda P. Dixon of Fayetteville, Pa.; one sister, Rose Derry of Toronto, Canada; one brother, Charles Hitchcock of Glasgow; three grandchildren; three nieces; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Ken Wenger, chaplain, will officiate. Burial in Scotland will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Research, South Central Pennsylvania Chapter, 1013 Mumma Road, Suite 303, Lemoyne, Pa. 17043.

Arrangements are by Cumberland Valley Crematorium, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.
