Mrs. Emma Pranulis

Mrs. Emma Bertothy Pranulis, 97, of Frederick, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at College View Center, Frederick. She was the wife of Charles Francis Pranulis, who died in 1982.

Born March 16, 1911, in Naugatuck, Conn., she was a daughter of the late Ladislaus "Lazlo" and Susan Bitto Bertothy.

Mrs. Pranulis graduated from C.W. Post Junior College. She had been employed as an accountant with Connecticut Light and Power and retired from Scovill Manufacturing Company in Waterbury, Conn. She was a member of St. Timothy's Roman Catholic Church in Walkersville since 2000. Until retirement, she was very active in her churches. She was a seamstress and enjoyed knitting, needlepoint and crocheting. She had a strong faith and was very willing to share her faith with others, especially in times of need.

Mrs. Pranulis was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving is a daughter, Dr. Maryann Pranulis, DNSc, of Frederick. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 1201 N. Market St., Frederick.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon Saturday, Feb. 7, at St. Timothy's Roman Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Road, Walkesville.

Interment will be held Feb. 14 in Calvary cemetery, Conn.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mrs. Pranulis to St. Timothy's Roman Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville, MD 21793 or the Yale School of Nursing, Gerontology Program, Attn: Development, 100 Church St. S., New Haven, CT 06536-0740.

Mr. Scott Brown

Mr. Scott David Brown, 39, of Union Bridge, died suddenly Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at his home.

Born Dec. 2, 1969, in Camden, N.J., he was the son of Frank L. Brown Jr. and stepmother Donna Brown of New Oxford, Pa., and Barbara Bloch Montgomery and stepfather Max Montgomery of Lake Helen, Fla. He was the husband of Debbie Boyle Brown, his wife of 15 years.

Mr. Brown had resided in Florida and Virginia, then Gaithersburg and moved to this area in 1996. He was employed as an HVAC technician with Comfort Air of Sykesville, and received a degree from Montgomery College in heating and air conditioning. He enjoyed Philadelphia Eagles football, muscle cars and woodworking. He was proud of his brown belt in karate, which he received at Tri-Star Martial Arts.

Surviving, in addition to his wife and parents, are one daughter, Kelly N. Brown, and one son, Nicholas S. Brown, both at home; paternal grandmother, Florence M. Brown of Burlington, N.J.; one sister, Kymberly A. Wise of Pittsburgh, Pa.; four stepbrothers, Sam, Dan, Randy and Andy Montgomery; one niece, Chelsea Wise; and two nephews, Ryan and Tyler Cooper.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until time of a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge. The Rev. Valentine Keveny, of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rockville, will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Nicholas and Kelly Brown Trust, c/o Susan Cooper, 9520 White Pillar Terrace, Gaithersburg, MD 20882.

Mrs. Essie Grossnickle

Mrs. Essie Bowman Grossnickle, 94, of Union Bridge, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at Carroll Hospital Center after a brief illness.

Born Dec. 29, 1914, in Boones Mill, Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Susan Barnhart Bowman. She was the wife of Lester Franklin Grossnickle, who preceded her in death in 1982.

Mrs. Grossnickle was a graduate of Union Bridge High School. She was a lifelong member of the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and a deacon and was a member of the Bible study group and the M&Ms.; She enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing bridge, the sherry club, vegetable gardening and traveling.

Surviving are daughter, Kaye G. Horr and husband, Steve, of New Windsor; two sons, Richard L. Grossnickle and wife, Mary Sue, of Johnsville, and Byron L. Grossnickle and wife, Virginia, near Johnsville; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Bowman Edwards.

Mrs. Grossnickle was the last of her immediate family of eight siblings. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Joanne Grossnickle.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren, 124 S. Main St. The Rev. James Benedict, her pastor, will officiate.

Private interment will be in Pipe Creek cemetery, near Linwood. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joanne Grossnickle Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 518, Union Bridge, MD 21791.

Mrs. Gloria Merriman

Gloria Eileen Merriman, 87, of Brunswick, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 9, 1921, in Brunswick and was the daughter of the late Lewis H. Cornelius and Daisy Russell Cornelius.

She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Brunswick.

She is survived by one son, George M. Merriman Jr. and wife, Katie, of Breckenridge, Colo.; one brother, L.H. Cornelius Jr. and wife, Veta, of Glen Burnie; one granddaughter, Kelli Lombard and husband, Aaron, of Durango, Colo.; one grandson, George M. Merriman and wife, Jennifer, of Boulder, Colo.; great-granddaughter, Remley Elizabeth Merriman; devoted daughter-in-law, Diane Merriman of Brunswick; best friend, Betty Reynolds of Brunswick; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Merriman Sr., in 1961, and seven brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 7, at Grace Episcopal Church, 114 E. "A" St., Brunswick. Fr. Frank Fortkamp will officiate.

Mr. Robert Martin

Mr. Robert T. Martin, 86, of Frederick, passed away at home Friday, Jan. 30, 2009. He was the husband of the late Dorothy E. Martin, and formerly the husband of the late Marjorie Conn Martin.

Born June 1, 1922, in Latrobe, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles D. Martin and Alice Black Morton. Mr. Martin served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, flying in B-24s in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations. Serving under Gen. Claire Chennault, Mr. Martin was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, and other commendations for combat service.

After the war, he worked for the Office of Strategic Services, which later became the CIA. Mr. Martin retired from service to his country in September 1973. In his last years he enjoyed duckpin bowling, and won several trophies from the Terrace Lanes Bowling League.

He is survived by a son, a granddaughter, two step-daughters, three stepsons, and numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

A funeral service will take place at noon Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. 15N., Frederick.

Interment with military honors will follow in the Veterans Garden of Honor II at Resthaven. Deacon George Sisson will officiate.

Floral tributes are welcome, or donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718 or cancer.org.

Mrs. Kathleen Hackley

Mrs. Kathleen Iris Hackley, 64, of Frederick, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at her home. Born Nov. 19, 1944, in Frederick, she was the only daughter of Paul Leslie and Georgetta Burdette Kelley.

She graduated from Northwood High School in 1962, and was married in 1967 to John David Hackley of Sharpsburg. She enjoyed caring for the elderly and was employed by Senior Solutions of Aberdeen as a companion to seniors. Kathy enjoyed spending time with her family and she was a doting grandparent. She was a kind, compassionate and caring soul, and was known to all for her loving heart.

She is survived by her mother, Georgetta Kelley of Frederick; two sons, Paul Hackley and wife, Nadine, of Leesburg, Va., and Grant Hackley and wife, Dana, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Bailey, Molly, and Josie Hackley of Leesburg, and Hudson Hackley of Pittsburgh.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the United Methodist Wesley Chapel in Urbana, 3519 Urbana Pike. The family suggests that memorial contributions go to the Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs, 27 DeGrange St., Frederick, MD, 21701; 301-631-2670.

Mr. G. Paul Edwards

Mr. G. Paul Edwards, 80, of Middletown, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington.

Born April 11, 1928, in Byers, Texas, he was the son of the late Elbert Clayton Edwards and Madge Steph Edwards. He graduated from Petrolia High School and later from Texas Technological University with a degree in agronomy. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was retired from the U.S. Army Reserves at the rank of major.

Paul worked for more than thirty years for the USDA Soil Conservation Service, distinguishing himself regionally, nationally and internationally for his contributions to soil conservation. He was a friend and adviser to many of the area farmers and developers. He was active in the Jefferson Ruritan Club, the Upper Potomac Tributary Strategy Group, and the Western Maryland Resource, Conservation and Development Council.

Paul loved sports and was an active tennis player until 2006. He also enjoyed reading, volunteering, helping his neighbors, spending time with his family and grandchildren and traveling. He made over 100 trips to Costa Rica and served as a tour guide on many of the trips.

He is survived by his wife, Jane "Penny" Sponaugle Edwards of Middletown; two brothers, Elbert Edwards of Memphis, Tenn., and Doyle Edwards of Henrietta, Texas; daughter, Pamela Edwards Klein and husband, Robert, of Shorewood, Wis.; three sons, Randel Edwards of Middletown, Paul Edwards of Catonsville, and Scott Edwards and wife, Marie, of Buda, Texas; and four grandchildren, Drew and Nora Klein of Shorewood, Wis., and Gabrielle and Max Edwards of Catonsville.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 7, at Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, 12 S. Church St., Middletown.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6, at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.

Interment will be at Arlington National cemetery.

Mrs. Rita Virginia Webber

Mrs. Rita Virginia Webber, 85, of Brunswick, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Millard Phillips Webber, who died May 17, 1956.

Born April 16, 1923, in Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Paul William and Mamie Ruth Barger Gaither.

Mrs. Webber retired from the National Geographic Society in 1988. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Brunswick, where she was a Sunday School teacher.

Mrs. Webber is survived by two daughters, Sharon N. Good of Brunswick, and Janie W. Shafer and husband, John, of Knoxville; two grandsons, Erik M. Good of Martinsburg and Millard Wesley Shafer of Knoxville; two brothers, Norman "Johnny" Gaither, and Paul Delphy Gaither and wife, Betty, both of Brunswick; two sisters, Pauline M. Leach of Silver Spring, and Doris Cannon of Frederick; sister-in-law, Charlotte Gaither of Brunswick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Capt. Jennifer J. Shafer Odom; son-in-law, Earl L. Good Jr.; brothers, Benjamin D. Gaither, Harold D. Gaither and Kenneth W. Gaither; and sisters, Freda N. Shriver and June R. Keller.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1100 North Maple Ave., Brunswick. Funeral services will be held 11 am. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Brownsville cemetery.

Mr. Roger Alvin Webb

Mr. Roger Alvin Webb, 62, of Adamstown, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at home while surrounded by his family, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Patsy Ann Webb, his wife of 35 years.

Born Feb. 21, 1946, in Laytonsville, he was the son of the late Stewart E. Sr. and Mary M. Webb. Mr. Webb loved to rebuild and paint cars, and was an avid Redskins fan. He worked for Melco Paints and Drywall for many years. He also loved to barbecue, being around his family and doting on his grandchildren.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by two children, Sandy Jenkins and husband, Randy, of Adamstown, and Steven Webb and wife, Farzana, of Monrovia; four stepchildren, Donna Thatcher and husband, Tracey, of Adamstown, Lisa Kidd and husband, Billy, of Gaithersburg, Carol Chandler of Jefferson, and Ronald Buffington of Gaithersburg; three brothers, John Webb and wife, Ruth, of Brunswick, Stewart Webb Jr. and wife, Margaret, of Urbana, and David Webb of Wheaton; three sisters, Mary Smith and husband, Charles, of Adamstown, Patsy Bloss of New York, and Vivian Painter and husband, Robert, of Pennsylvania; a sister-in-law, Kelly Webb of Frederick; four granddaughters; two grandsons; and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Webb; a brother-in-law, Wayne Bloss; and a stepson, Ralph Chandler.

Visitation was held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the Lynfield Event Complex, 10142 Hansonville Road, Frederick, where funeral services took place at 2 p.m. Friday at the complex.

Interment followed in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody, P.A., Frederick.

Mr. Andrew Fowler

Andrew Marcus Fowler, of Frederick, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009.

He was the beloved son of Michelle L. Knestout and the late Troy Fowler; brother of Colton and Destiny Knestout; stepson of Timothy J. Knestout; and grandson of Sharon and Jerry Mayes, Clayton and Rebecca Fowler and Caroline Knestout.

Relatives and friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Collins Funeral Home, Inc., 500 University Blvd., W., Silver Spring; and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at St. Mark the Evangelist Church, 7501 Adelphi Road, Hyattsville. Mass of Christian burial will follow.

Interment will be in Fort Lincoln cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Childrens National Medical Center, Attn: Children's Hospital Foundation, 111 Michigan Ave., N.E., Washington, D.C. 20010.
