Carolyn W. Hilton

Carolyn Wylie Hilton, 81, of Boothbay, died at her home on Saturday, April 29.

Born in Boothbay, she was the daughter of Samuel Forrest and Ruth Merry Wylie.

She married Floyd B. Hilton of Waldoboro. They traveled throughout the country with Mr. Hilton's work as a superintendent on road construction. They lived in upstate New York for most of their married life. Mrs. Hilton returned to Boothbay in 1974. She worked at the Boothbay Harbor School District as a library assistant in the elementary school. Her true life passion was her family.

Mrs. Hilton was predeceased by her husband, Floyd; her sister, Ruth Wylie Hodgdon; and her son, John Bainbridge Hilton.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy E. and Michael A. Mac-Kusick of Boothbay; one sister, Maud Page of Boothbay Harbor; daughter-in-law, Mary Donnelly Hilton of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one stepson, Gordon Hilton of Bangor; one granddaughter, Annie Lyn MacKusick of Boothbay; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service on Sunday, May 7 at 1 p.m. at the Oceanview cemetery in Boothbay. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that contributions in her memory be made to the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library Fund, 4 Oak Street, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, which will be used for books and programs for the Children's Room. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Mary M. Mack

Mary Mansur Mack, 87, died in Largo, Florida.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Marilyn Mansur of Bristol, formerly of Southport; and her granddaughter, Tracie Spillane of Oriental, N.C.

In keeping with the wishes of Mrs. Mack, there will be no services. Burial will be at Spruce Lawn cemetery on Southport Island.

Kathleen M. Lincoln

Committal Service

A committal graveside service for Kathleen May Lincoln, age 43, who died on January 23, will be held in Whitefield Plains cemetery on Saturday, May 6 at noon with Fr. Clement Thibodeau officiating. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street in Wiscasset.

Elizabeth Andrews

Elizabeth Burditt Parker Andrews, long-time summer resident of Boothbay Harbor, died at the Burlington Health and Rehab Center in Vermont on Thursday, April 27.

Mrs. Andrews was born in Boston, Mass. on April 30, 1903. Orphaned within months, she was adopted in 1913 by Carrie (Mason Burditt) and J. Earle Parker. She grew up in Waban, Mass., and was graduated from Newton High School in 1926. After graduating from Middlebury College, class of 1930, she taught high school English for the next six years in Bristol, Vermont, Cohasset, Mass., and East Hartford, Conn. During summers she attended Middlebury's Breadloaf School of English from which she earned her Master's Degree in 1935.

In 1936 She married John Thayer Andrews and they took up residence in Middlebury, Vermont, where he taught at the college and raised three children. For 50 summers starting in 1945, she and her family spent summers at their McKown Point cottage. In 1994 due to failing health, she moved to Burlington to be close to her daughter. Mrs. Andrews served the Girl Scouts at the state level and was an active member of the Middlebury Congregational Church and the Juniper-McKown Point Community Association. In addition, she was an ardent, lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1985, and by her brother, John Parker, in 1972.

Survivors include her children and in-laws, Charles and Connie Andrews of Reston, Va., Caroline Allen of Trenton, Maine, and Richard Allen of Southwest Harbor, and Catharine "Kit" Andrews and Tom O. Smith of Burlington; friend and advocate Susan Barber of Burlington; childhood friend and sister-in-law Helen A. Bowditch of Worcester, Mass., and sister-in-law May Parker of Littleton, N.H. six grandchildren; cousins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service of celebration of the life of Elizabeth Andrews will be held on Saturday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at the Congregational Church in Middlebury, Vermont. A later Interment at Evergreen Cemetery, Pittsford Vt., will be private. Gifts in her memory may be made to the Kurn Hattin Home, P.O. Box 127, Westminster, VT 05158 or to the Manley Reed Scholarship Fund, c/o JPVIS, West Boothbay Harbor, ME 04575.

Gertrude D. Reed

Gertrude Doty Reed, 83, formerly of Lobster Cove in Boothbay Harbor, died Thursday, April 27 at the Gregory Wing in St. Andrews Village, Boothbay Harbor.

Born June 8, 1916 in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of Charles and Martha Annie Greenleaf Doty. She had polio since she was 11 months old which affected her all of her life.

She attended schools in Boothbay Harbor and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1933.

Mrs. Reed had resided in the Gregory Wing for the past three years. She married Allen C. Reed on April 1, 1935. She worked in domestic work all of her life. She enjoyed going lobstering with her husband. She also enjoyed spending time with her family on their vacations. She made Barbie clothing for her granddaughter, and always cooked everyone's favorite food when she had family over for dinner.

Mrs. Reed was predeceased by her husband, who died on September 5, 1995.

Survivors include two daughters, Harriet Lorraine Reed of Cumberland and Betty and her husband James Meyer of Lisbon Falls; seven grandchildren and eight great-grand-children.

A funeral was held on Tuesday, May 2 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. Rev. DanaBeth Wells-Goodwin officiated. Committal services will follow in the Maine Veterans cemetery at noon. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Veterans Memorial cemetery Association, P.O. Box 942, Augusta, ME 04332. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Arthur D. House

Arthur D. House, 78, of Damariscotta, died at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, after a lengthy illness.

Born in South Bristol, he was the son of Arthur W. and Martilla (Thompson) House.

Mr. House was the owner and operator of the Hilltop Market in Damariscotta for 28 years. He was a 32nd degree Mason, and was a charter member and past president of the Damariscotta Lions Club.

From 1942 to 1946 Mr. House served in the United States Army as part of the Ozark Division in Germany during World War II. In 1949 he married Elizabeth Sayward.

Survivors include his wife of Damariscotta; two daughters, Laurel Grady of Jefferson, and Diane Robinson of North Whitefield; one son, Arthur D. House Jr. of Brooks, Maine; one sister, Lucille Putnam of Damariscotta; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. House's memory to Miles Memorial Hospital, Damariscotta.

Wilfred James Sweet Sr.

Wilfred James Sweet Sr., 83, of Topsham, Vermont, died Tuesday, June 13 in Colebrook, New Hampshire.

Born on August 4, 1916 in East Corinth, Vermont, he was the son of John and Alma (Rockhill) Sweet.

Mr. Sweet attended schools in East Corinth and was self-employed for many years as a logger. He was a great teamster, pulling horses for many years throughout New England. For over 60 years he owned and operated a daity farm in East Corinth, assisted in the later years by his son and grandson. His favorite past-times were watching wrestling and boxing events.

On May 9, 1936 in Barre, Vermont, he was married to Dorothy Perdue. She predeceased him on April 7, 1994 after 58 years of marriage.

Survivors include two sons, Wilfred Sweet Jr., of New Sharon, and Roy Sweet of Topsham, Vt.; eight daughters, Lois Maxwell of Newport, Vt., Dona Clements of Leesburg, Fla., Mona Hersey of Montpelier, Vt., Joyce DiFaro of Winston-Salem, N.C., Sheila Thomson of Orford, N.H., Mariann Vess of East Boothbay, Rise Kingsbury of Topsham, Vt., and Candace Sweet of Brattleboro, Vt.; 26 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother; one sister; longtime friend and companion, Velma Ames of Canaan, Vt.; many nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was predeceased by four brothers and four sisters and one grandson.

A funeral service was held on Friday, June 16 in the Hale Funeral Home, Upper Plain Bradford, Vt. Burial followed in the Sawyer cemetery in Bradford.

Donations in Mr. Sweet's memory may be made to Oxbow Vocational Corporation, for the Wilfred Sweet Agricultural Memorial Award, in care of River Bend Career and Technical Center, P.O. Box 618, Bradford, VT 05033 or the American Heart Association, Vt. Affiliate, 12 Hurricane Lane, Williston, VT 05495.

The Hale Funeral Home of Bradford, Vermont was in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle J. Pickard

Myrtle J. Pickard, 78, of West Bath, died Tuesday, June 6 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in Boothbay, she was a daughter of Wendell and Mabel Barter Lewis, attended local schools and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School.

On March 3, 1941, she married Harold E. Pickard and they made their home in West Bath. Mrs. Pickard was a clerk at Senter's in Bath for several years. Her interests were knitting, word games and bird watching.

Her husband died March 17, 1972.

Surviving are two sons, George S. of West Bath and Bruce R. Pickard of San Clemente, California; a daughter, Mrs. William (Carol A.) Hochgesang of West Bath; five brothers, Harlan, Elmer, Alfred and Stanley Lewis, all of Boothbay, and Donald Lewis of Elkton, Maryland; a sister, Jessie Steeves of Scarborough; three granddaughters; and eight great-grand-children.

A graveside service was held Friday, June 9 in Maple Grove Cemetery, Oak Grove Avenue in Bath. Arrangements were by Mayo, Curtis and Hill Funeral Home, Bath.

F. Marsden London

F. Marsden London, 85, of Darien, Conn. and Southport, died Friday, June 9 at his home.

Born in East Orange, N.J., Mr. London lived in Darien since 1946. He was a graduate of Yale University, class of 1937 and received his graduate degree from Yale University School of Architecture.

Mr. London was an architect specializing in churches and homes throughout the area. In his early career, he worked during the war designing military installations and later practiced for New York firms working on pharmaceutical plants in the area and Venezuela. He was a member of the AIA.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Zenna Winslow London.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen G. London of Darien, Conn.; two daughters, Caroline L. Kettner of Stow, Mass. and Marsha L. Curta of Pt. Pleasant, N.J.; a stepdaughter, Priscilla Toumey of Westport, Conn.; two stepsons, Christopher Tourney of Lexington, Kentucky and Richard Tourney of Coral Springs, Fla.; and grandchildren, Raymond and Marshall Kettner and Coltan Bloom.

A memorial service was held Saturday, June 17 in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Darien, Conn. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Woodstock, N.Y.

The family prefers in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 977 Hope Street, Stamford, CT 06907. The Spear Funeral Home of Fairfield, Conn. was in charge of arrangements.

Helen R. Pinkham

Helen R. Pinkham, 94, wife of the late Irving L. Pinkham, died Sunday, June 18 at a Norway nursing facility.

Born in Bangor on July 5, 1905, she was the daughter of Lorral L. and Annie (Hart) Reed.

Mrs. Pinkham graduated from Farmington Normal School in the 1920s and had taught elementary school in New York State. She and her husband were married in New York before moving back to Maine and living in the Bangor/Hampden area during the 1930s. She was an elementary school teacher at the Hampden Center School in Hampden and along with her husband, they operated a dairy farm on Route 9 in Hampden until 1956.

In 1956, they moved to Pittsfield, where they ran a poultry farm and provided tourist accommodations. In 1959, they moved to Boothbay Harbor, where they ran the Green Shutters Inn for 13 years, after which they sold the Inn to their son, Clayton.

In 1972, they moved to Belleview, Florida, where she developed lamp-making skills. In 1989 they moved back to Boothbay Harbor; a place which Helen and Irving truly loved. She made and sold lamps and was known as the "lamp lady."

Her entire life she was active in church, was a longtime member of the West Hampden Baptist Church and the Boothbay Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing solos.

Survivors include her four children, Lewis and Clayton, both of Waxhaw, N.C., Marilyn Seaquist of Sudbury, Mass. and Sylvia Robinson of Kingston, Mass.; one sister, Marion Rowell of West Penobscot; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchilld-ren; six great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 24 at Lakeview Cemetery, Route 9 in Hampden, conducted by Alfred Roberts, deacon of the Boothbay Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Boothbay Baptist Church, P.O. Box 64, Boothbay, ME 04537. Arrangements were by the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home in Hampden.

Stephen A. Arsenault

Stephen A. Arsenault, 43, died unexpectedly Monday, June 19 on Barter's Island.

Born May 25, 1957 in Worcester, Mass., he was the son of Francis and Ozelie Peters Arsenault. He grew up and attended local schools in the Boothbay region.

Mr. Arsenault was a fisherman all of his life and owned his own boat, the Regalia. He also dug clams, worms, tendered for sea urchins and fished with several local fishermen.

He was an avid racing fan and enjoyed hunting and fishing all of his life. He also enjoyed target shooting.

Mr. Arsenault was predeceased by his father Francis L. Arsenault, and brother Bruce Arsenault.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Ozelie and David Chapman of Boothbay; a daughter, Jessica Arsenault of Clearwater, Florida; a stepdaughter, Heather Perkins of Boothbay; a brother, Barry Arsenault of Alna; three sisters, Brenda Lord of Boothbay, Tammy Chubbuck and Lisa Orne, both of Boothbay; a half sister, Karen Brewer of Wiscasset; his dog Kaiser and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held on Wednesday, June 21 with a Bible Service at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 22 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. Private burial will be in the Oaklawn cemetery in Boothbay.

Minerva Townsend Spignesi

Minerva Townsend Spignesi, 90, of Bradenton, Florida and Boothbay died Tuesday, June 13 at College Park Club in Bradenton, Fla.

She was born September 9, 1909 in Westfield, Mass.

Mrs. Spignesi was a homemaker and moved to Bradenton from Naples, Florida two years ago.

Survivors include two daughters, Dolores J. Shannon of Sarasota, Fla., and Jeanne R. MacDonald of Attleboro, Mass.; one son, William F. Spignesi of Sedalia, Mo.; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grand-children.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Manasota Chapel in Bradenton is in charge of arrangements.
