Scott Wilson

Scott Wilson, 68, of Boothbay Harbor, died Wednesday, September 20, after a short illness, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born on February 7, 1932, he was the son of Nathaniel and Margery Lamb Wilson.

Mr. Wilson graduated from Hallowell High School in the Class of 1950. He worked for Central Maine Power for 25 years and was district manager for Belfast, Newcastle, and Augusta. In the summers he was a charter boat captain aboard the Elizabeth W. He then became a lobster fisherman and retired after 15 years.

He was instrumental in the development of the Belfast Harbor Committee and was very active in fund-raising for the Boy Scouts of America. He worked on the construction of the Boothbay Harbor Fisherman's Memorial, and had been an active Rotarian Little League coach and former registered Maine Guide.

Mr. Wilson was predeceased by his sister, Martha McCullum in 1988.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Boothbay Harbor; three sons, Kevin Homans Wilson and his wife Michelle of Boothbay Harbor, Keith Nathaniel Wilson and his wife Deanna of Sarasota, Florida, and Michael and Kathleen Dekker of Dresden; two daughters, Elizabeth Grace Wilson of Haines, Alaska and Michelle and Christopher Donahue of Portland, Conn.; seven grandchildren; one nephew; one niece; and one cousin.

A memorial service was held Monday, September 25 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Donations may be made in Mr. Wilson's memory to the Fisherman's Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 304, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

H. Graham Pope

H. Graham Pope, M.D., 91, formerly of Westport Island, and more recently of Concord, Mass., died at the Rivercrest Deaconess Long Term Care Facility on Wednesday, September 20.

Born in Boston on May 29, 1909, he was the son of the late Harrison and Lillian (Graham) Pope.

Dr. Pope graduated from Roxbury Latin School in 1927, Harvard University in 1931 and Harvard Medical School in 1935. In 1937, he married Alice Rider, who was then teaching at Concord Academy. After an internship and residency in surgery at Boston City Hospital, he served in the United States Navy during World War II and subsequently began private practice in surgery in Swampscott, Mass. He was an attending surgeon at Salem, Lynn and Mary Alley hospitals on the North Shore of Mass., and was appointed Chief of Surgery at Lynn Hospital starting in the 1950s. He retired in the late 1960s to live with his wife on Westport Island, where he took great pleasure in sailing his Concordia yawl, the Saxon. An enthusiastic hunter, Dr. Pope also enjoyed lobstering, and until very recently, tended to his traps daily.

His wife of 54 years, Alice (Rider), died in 1991.

Survivors include his son, Dr. Harrison G. Pope Jr.; his daughter-in-law, Mary Q. Pope; and his granddaughters, Kimberly W., Hilary K. and Courtney G. Pope, all of Concord.

Friends are invited to attend memorial services in the First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road, Concord Center, Massachusetts on Saturday, September 30 at 1 p.m. The Rev. Dr. John C. Lombard will officiate and a reception will follow. Private Interment was in the family lot in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Mass. In recognition of his World War II U.S. Navy service, Concord's town flag will be flown at half staff on Saturday.

For those who wish, gifts in his memory may be sent to the H. Graham Pope Scholarship Fund, Roxbury Latin School, 101 St. Theresa Avenue, West Roxbury, MA 02132. Arrangements are under the direction of the MacRae-Tunnicliffe Funeral Home in Concord, Mass.

Richard C. S. Hurst

Richard Christopher Stancliffe Hurts, 78, of Alna, died on July 27 at Miles Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Kent, England on October 14, 1921, he was the son of Neville and Marjorie Hurst.

Mr. Hurst entered the British Royal Navy at 13 years of age and served in World War II on the HMS Warspite.

In 1948 Mr. Hurst came to America and on June 26 married the late Constance Hitchcock, daughter of Captain Russell Hitchcock. The family lived for many years in Santa Monica, California where he worked as a technical writer and he and his wife owned an antique shop. They returned to Maine in 1985 and lived in Sheepscot.

Mr. Hurst loved to garden and was known for his spring tulips and peonies.

Survivors include two sons, Russell Hurst, his wife Francine, and daughters Talia and Blayne of Granada Hills, California, and Gilbert Hurst of Portland; a daughter, Anne-Kelledy Manson and her husband Andrew of Boylston, Mass.

A celebration of his life will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 14 at St. Andrew's Church in Newcastle with Rev. Steve White officiating.

Arrangements are under the care of the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.

Donald C. Forbes

Donald C. Forbes, 57, of Woolwich, died unexpectedly on Friday, September 22 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born February 6, 1943 in Caribou, he was the son of William E. and Florence (Dickinson) Forbes.

Since 1978 he was employed at Bath Iron Works in various positions and was a strong supporter of Local 6, a national machinists union. Before that he was a member of several law enforcement agencies in New England. For nearly 25 years he was an antiques dealer and auctioneer. A regular feature at his auctions was the basket passed through rows of attendees to collect funds for the Make A Wish Foundation. He personally matched the high bid for each collection. He taught classes on becoming familiar with antiques in Gardiner and Wiscasset.

Mr. Forbes served as fire chief in Woolwich for nine years and was instrumental in construction of the North End Fire Station. He was a certified appraiser in the Appraisers Guide of America.

At the time of his death he was president of Maine Auctioneers Association. He was a member of the Polar Star Lodge of Masons in Bath and the Masonic Lodges in Waterville, Lewiston and Portland.

His favorite pastimes were restoring furniture and gardening. He and his wife won awards for their flower gardens at their residence in Woolwich.

He and his wife Lurene (Sawtelle) were married on May 24, 1969 in Oakland.

Besides his wife Lurene Forbes of Woolwich, he is survived by his mother Florence Forbes of Waterville; four daughters, Mrs. Gregory (Donna) Hartan of South Windsor, Conn., Mrs. Richard (Debbie) Donati of Coventry, Conn., Mrs. Robert (Heather) Belanger of Topsham, and Jennifer Forbes and her fiancÈ Tom Reno both of West Bath; five grandchildren; five brothers and sisters; several aunts; uncles, cousins, nephews and a special friend, Tony Gatti of Wiscasset.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, September 26 at the Mayo, Curtis Funeral Home. A gathering for friends and family was held at the family home in Woolwich after the services. Friends wishing to make memorials to Mr. Forbes may do so at Make A Wish Foundation, 97 Elm Street, Suite 203, Camden, ME 04843.

Richard K. Kleinert

Richard Kurt Kleinert, 63, of Barter's Island, Boothbay, died Friday, September 22 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick, following a long illness.

Born April 26, 1937 in Queens, New York, he was a son of Richard R. and Ruth (Fels) Kleinert.

Mr. Kleinert attended schools in Queens, New York, including Queens College. Later he moved to Pennsylvania where he owned and operated a branch office of the Robert Helf Personnel Agency.

He and his wife, Elizabeth, retired to Barter's Island four years ago. He was an active member of the Masonic Bayview Lodge #196 in Boothbay.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; one brother, Roy Kleinert of Long Island, N.Y.; one son, Gregory of Pennsylvania; one daughter, Faith Shelby of Massachusetts; one brother-in-law, Fred Pierce of Barter's Island; and two grandsons, Nicholas and Alex.

Visiting hours were Monday, September 25, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 26 at the Chapel of the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Pancreatic Research Center, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Anthony Gulla

Anthony Pasquale Bruno Gulla, 62, of Boothbay, died Thursday, September 21 at the Lehey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts.

Born on July 2, 1938, he was the son of Bruno and Rosa Casiucelli Gulla. In 1983 he married Audrey Belding.

Mr. Gulla was a former taxi driver in New York. In 1988 they moved from Long Island, New York to Boothbay. He was a school bus driver in Alna from 1990-1997. He started Tony's Regional Driving School in 1997 until illness prevented him from continuing.

A member of the Bayview Masonic Lodge #196, he held the office of Tyler for the last several years. He was also a member of the Kora Temple Shrine in Portland. He was a member of the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church and its choir.

Mr. Gulla was well known for his fabulous cooking, especially his devoted service in starting the tradition of the Community Thanksgiving Meal at the United Methodist Church. If anyone ever needed help, no matter who, when or where, Mr. Gulla would be there.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey of Boothbay; one son, Anthony Gulla of Cheyenne, Wyoming; one daughter, Frances Stromboli of Newark, New Jersey; one grandson, Nico Gulla of Massachusetts; one sister, Mary Van Ness of Virginia; one cousin and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay on Monday, September 25, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 26 at the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church in Boothbay Harbor with Interment at Decker cemetery in Southport.

Donations may be made in Mr. Gulla's memory to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Office of Development, International Shrine Headquarters, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607-1460.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Wilfred James Sweet Sr.

Wilfred James Sweet Sr., 83, of Topsham, Vermont, died Tuesday, June 13 in Colebrook, New Hampshire.

Born on August 4, 1916 in East Corinth, Vermont, he was the son of John and Alma (Rockhill) Sweet.

Mr. Sweet attended schools in East Corinth and was self-employed for many years as a logger. He was a great teamster, pulling horses for many years throughout New England. For over 60 years he owned and operated a daity farm in East Corinth, assisted in the later years by his son and grandson. His favorite past-times were watching wrestling and boxing events.

On May 9, 1936 in Barre, Vermont, he was married to Dorothy Perdue. She predeceased him on April 7, 1994 after 58 years of marriage.

Survivors include two sons, Wilfred Sweet Jr., of New Sharon, and Roy Sweet of Topsham, Vt.; eight daughters, Lois Maxwell of Newport, Vt., Dona Clements of Leesburg, Fla., Mona Hersey of Montpelier, Vt., Joyce DiFaro of Winston-Salem, N.C., Sheila Thomson of Orford, N.H., Mariann Vess of East Boothbay, Rise Kingsbury of Topsham, Vt., and Candace Sweet of Brattleboro, Vt.; 26 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother; one sister; longtime friend and companion, Velma Ames of Canaan, Vt.; many nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was predeceased by four brothers and four sisters and one grandson.

A funeral service was held on Friday, June 16 in the Hale Funeral Home, Upper Plain Bradford, Vt. Burial followed in the Sawyer cemetery in Bradford.

Donations in Mr. Sweet's memory may be made to Oxbow Vocational Corporation, for the Wilfred Sweet Agricultural Memorial Award, in care of River Bend Career and Technical Center, P.O. Box 618, Bradford, VT 05033 or the American Heart Association, Vt. Affiliate, 12 Hurricane Lane, Williston, VT 05495.

The Hale Funeral Home of Bradford, Vermont was in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle J. Pickard

Myrtle J. Pickard, 78, of West Bath, died Tuesday, June 6 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in Boothbay, she was a daughter of Wendell and Mabel Barter Lewis, attended local schools and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School.

On March 3, 1941, she married Harold E. Pickard and they made their home in West Bath. Mrs. Pickard was a clerk at Senter's in Bath for several years. Her interests were knitting, word games and bird watching.

Her husband died March 17, 1972.

Surviving are two sons, George S. of West Bath and Bruce R. Pickard of San Clemente, California; a daughter, Mrs. William (Carol A.) Hochgesang of West Bath; five brothers, Harlan, Elmer, Alfred and Stanley Lewis, all of Boothbay, and Donald Lewis of Elkton, Maryland; a sister, Jessie Steeves of Scarborough; three granddaughters; and eight great-grand-children.

A graveside service was held Friday, June 9 in Maple Grove Cemetery, Oak Grove Avenue in Bath. Arrangements were by Mayo, Curtis and Hill Funeral Home, Bath.

F. Marsden London

F. Marsden London, 85, of Darien, Conn. and Southport, died Friday, June 9 at his home.

Born in East Orange, N.J., Mr. London lived in Darien since 1946. He was a graduate of Yale University, class of 1937 and received his graduate degree from Yale University School of Architecture.

Mr. London was an architect specializing in churches and homes throughout the area. In his early career, he worked during the war designing military installations and later practiced for New York firms working on pharmaceutical plants in the area and Venezuela. He was a member of the AIA.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Zenna Winslow London.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen G. London of Darien, Conn.; two daughters, Caroline L. Kettner of Stow, Mass. and Marsha L. Curta of Pt. Pleasant, N.J.; a stepdaughter, Priscilla Toumey of Westport, Conn.; two stepsons, Christopher Tourney of Lexington, Kentucky and Richard Tourney of Coral Springs, Fla.; and grandchildren, Raymond and Marshall Kettner and Coltan Bloom.

A memorial service was held Saturday, June 17 in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Darien, Conn. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Woodstock, N.Y.

The family prefers in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 977 Hope Street, Stamford, CT 06907. The Spear Funeral Home of Fairfield, Conn. was in charge of arrangements.
