GERTRUDE “TRUDY” (DOHERTY) REAL
Gertrude “Trudy” Real, very loving wife, mother, grandmother, activist and dear friend, passed away on Monday, Sept. 18, 2006, at the age of 76 years from brain cancer.
There are times in our lives when we encounter people who are the closest thing to visible angels. This was our “Gert.” Well-known as a phenomenal child care provider for 35 years, she mothered and molded the character of innumerable children here in Ventura. She taught kindness to others and the value of good manners at the lunch table. Her charges’ days were steeped in storytelling and art making and celebration and good food. Her “fluffy” arms were open to innumerable children who had the good fortune to spend their days with her.

A self-described bulldozer when it came to making things happen that others thought impossible, she led the with three other women in lobbying state and local officials to ban the notorious head shops of the 1970s and early 1980s.

Because on their grass-roots efforts (and aided by her gutsy calls to NBC Channel 4 news and Los Angeles Times), Ventura County and all of its cities made history by being the first in the state of California to create ordinances against sales of drug paraphernalia. She also was instrumental in making Red Rubbib Week a reality on local high school campuses.

Although she claimed that just saying she was going to do something didn’t mean she was actually going to do it, she continued to plant seeds up to the week prior to her entrance to Community Memorial Hospital, seeking out and going after the components for a new elementary art education program for the children of Ventura Unified School district.

A legendary talker, she always put her money (i.e. efforts) where her mouth was. She accepted everybody as they were and loved them unconditionally. She didn’t need to know or understand a person’s problems to provide caring support.

A woman of practical faith, she believed her final assignment in life was to show us that we are meant to face death with strength and cheerfulness. She considered it not accidental that she was told in advance that she was dying, believing that life has purpose to the end.

She leaves behind her much-loved husband, John, and their children, Christopher, Alicia and Gregory (wife Monika), and grandchildren, Savannah, John and Christopher 11.

In addition, she is survived by sisters, Sister Marie Elizabeth Doherty, O.P. of Adrian, Mich., Rosella Ford of Brown City, Mich. and Cecelia Lambert of Marlette, Mich. and brothers Carl Doherty of Brown City, Mich. and Robert Doherty of Clio, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Doherty, and three brothers, Bernard, Lawrence and Francis Doherty.

A celebration of her life was conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Ventura. Interment followed at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.

The family requests that donations be made to Ventura County Museum of Art & History, the Salvation Army, or the preschool program of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Ventura.
