Virginia M. Piccard (Paulson), age 90, of Grand Rapids, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, January 13, 2018. Virginia was an active member of Faith Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, baking, gardening, photography, and visiting with family and friends. Her husband, Richard Frank Piccard, a great granddaughter, Adeline Joie Piccard, and her brother, Gordon Paulson, preceded her in death. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Jason (Amy) Piccard, and Jevon Piccard; her grandchildren, Aaron, Adam, Pamela, and Nicholas; seven great grandchildren; her sister, Priscilla Harris; as well as many nieces and nephews. Visitation with Virginia's family will be held on Tuesday, January 16, from 6 to 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, January 17. Interment will be in Grandville Cemetery.

Herman A. Walcott

Herman A. Walcott, age 86, of Cutlerville, went to be with his Lord on Monday, January 15, 2018. Herman worked for Steelcase, retiring after 32 years. His wife, Johanna, and brother, Loren Walcott, preceded him in death. He will be lovingly remembered by his sons, James Walcott and Roger Walcott; brother Henry (Twila) Lanning; sister, Luan (Mick) Dola; sisters-in-law, Thelma Walcott, Dorothy Bultsma, and Mary Mesler. The family wishes to thank the staff at Raybrook Manor and Faith Hospice for the wonderful care they provided. The family will greet visitors on Thursday, January 18 from 5 to 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, where the funeral will be held at 11 am on Friday, January 19, with Rev. Ken Van Wyk officiating. Interment will be in Blain Cemetery.

Keith Fitzgerald, age 91, of Jenison, formerly of North Palm Beach, Fl, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2018, and went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 70 years, Betty Ann. He is survived by two children, James and Luisa Fitzgerald of Las Vegas, NV, and Carol and Dale Charles of Kentwood; two grandchildren, Emily and Paul Henley of Kentwood, and Kurt and Melissa Charles of Caledonia; seven great grandchildren; sisters, Jean Hollebeck, Patricia Poll, Susan Fleser; brother, Leon (Nancy) Fitzgerald; sisters-in-law, Betty Fitzgerald, Carolyn Wassenaar, Dorothy Wassenaar; brother-in-law, Gordon Wassenaar; many nieces and nephews. Born on August 7, 1926, Mr. Fitzgerald served in the armed guard section of the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard merchant ships as gun crews moved supplies to our service men serving around the world. Mr. Fitzgerald was the founder and president of Fitzgerald and Co. Inc., an investment Banking and Securities Firm based in Grand Rapids with offices in Lansing and Muskegon. He was also a long time member of The Gideons International, a large Christian organization that distributes Bibles around the world. The family will greet visitors on Friday, January 19, from 4 - 7 pm and Saturday, January 20, from 10 - 11 am at Stroo Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 11 am on Saturday at Stroo Funeral Home, with Pastor Theron W. Crawford Sr., officiating. Entombment in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Honorariums are requested to be made to The Gideons International.

Jean Edythe Kruger

Jean Edythe (Anderson) Kruger, age 80, of Cutlerville, passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018, at Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Edythe Anderson. She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Paul Kruger, and his wife, Beth, of Elgin, IL; her step-granddaughter, Laura Bernardoni, and her husband, Zach, of Huntley, IL.
Jean was grateful for the education she received from the University of Michigan where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing in 1959. She also obtained two masters degrees, one being from Wayne State University in Education. She was an instructor at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center School of Nursing from 1966 until it closed in 1987. She then became the Director of Nursing at Porter Hills Retirement Village for five years when she moved on to work as a surveyor of nursing homes for the State of Michigan until her retirement in 2007.
She loved the richness of stories, whether it be reading a book in her living room or on her back porch, reading to the children at Southwood Elementary school, or the stage. She had a passion for the political climate and the shape of history, past and present. She volunteered her time as a CASA worker; at the Army National Guard; helping people navigate Medicare and Medicaid questions for the state, and with the Kent Garden Club.
As Jean requested, interment has taken place at Kent Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Fountain Street Church, 24 Fountain St. NE, Grand Rapids, MI. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Jean may be made to Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods in Byron Center, MI. Jean will be missed by many whose lives she touched.

Larry Ferguson

Larry Ferguson, age 78, was called to his Heavenly home on Thursday, January 18, 2018. Larry retired from Steelcase after 22 years of service. Prior to that, he worked for Bill Knapp's Restaurants for 20 years. His daughter, Julie Creek; one brother; five sisters; and his parents, Edward and Anna Ferguson, preceded him in death. Larry will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Margaret; children, Leigh Rios, Karen (Scott) Cook, Larry (Michelle) Ferguson; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a sister; many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 am on Thursday, January 25, at Kentwood Community Church, 1200 60th St. SE (use Door I) where the service will begin at 11 am. Pastor Michael Braden will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Real Kids, a ministry of Kentwood Community Church (make checks payable to the church and add Real Kids to memo line).

Milton Tad Mueller

Milton Tad Mueller, age 84, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 20, 2018. Tad was a 1951 graduate of South High School, where he was on the All City Football Team. After honorably serving his country in the U.S. Army, Tad went on to work in the Street Maintenance Department for the City of Grand Rapids for 35 years, retiring as Assistant Superintendent. On December 21, 2017, Tad's wife of 65 years, Janet, preceded him in death. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be deeply missed by his children, Michael (Nancy) Mueller, Lori (Garry) Kadwell, Mark Mueller; his grandchildren, Jennifer Mueller (fiance, Nick Boelens), Matthew Mueller, Viktoria (Robert) Lissner; his great grandchildren, Jade and Brennley; his sisters, Marcia (Bob) Winkels, Susan (Curtis) Clarke; his sister-in-law, Marilyn McGovern; his brother-in-law, James (Linda) Mollo; and many nieces and nephews. The family will greet visitors on Wednesday, January 24, from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, January 25. Rev. John Diener will be officiating. Interment in Rest Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kent County Animal Shelter.

Ruth Nelva (Bredeweg) Kaechele, age 93, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 20, 2018. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Joann Bredeweg; husband, Charles (Bud) Kaechele; her son, Carl; brothers, Richard and Clarence; and sister, Dorothy. She will be deeply missed by her children, Chuck (Donna) Kaechele, Nancy (Loren) Slager, Thomas (Judy) Kaechele; her sister, Margaret DeVrou. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, and nieces. Ruth was a faithful servant of the Lord. She was a member of Leighton United Methodist Church for nearly 74 years and was a devoted prayer warrior for her family, friends, and many others. Ruth’s family is very thankful for the wonderful care by Julee Sabin and Faith Hospice. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 21, from 3 to 6 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, and at the church one hour prior to the service. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 22, at Leighton United Methodist Church, 4180 - 2nd Street, with Rev. David McBride officiating. Interment in Lakeside Cemetery, Caledonia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Leighton United Methodist Church or Faith Hospice.

Victoria Martinez

Victoria Ramirez de Martinez, age 91, of Byron Center, made a transition to a better life on Monday, January 22, 2018, while surrounded by members of her immediate family at her home. She was a great lady who will always be remembered and loved. Victoria was born at Barrio Esperanza in Arecibo, Puerto Rico to Jesus Ramirez and Maria Perceverada Cortes. She had five brothers who preceded her in death. She married Pedro Roman in 1948 and had two children before becoming a widow in 1951. In 1953 she married Genaro Martinez and had two more children. Victoria worked as a seamstress from home before serving for many years as a kitchen assistant at what was known as Arecibo District Hospital. After retirement, she and her husband and daughter moved to Grand Rapids in 1978. She became a widow again in 2002. Victoria was a sweet and humble person who enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Having been a seamstress, she continued to enjoy sewing until Alzheimer's began its deterioration process. The disease was diagnosed in 2008. After a stroke in 2015 she could no longer walk and lost the use of one arm. Victoria is survived by her four children, Pedro Roman Jr., of Byron Center, Angel Manuel (Marilia) Roman of Arecibo, Jose Manuel (Evelyn) Martinez of Milwaukee, Lydia (Douglas) Stamate of Wyoming, MI; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 24 from 4 - 6 pm for immediate family only at Stroo Funeral Home. Public viewing will follow from 6 - 8 pm. The service will be held at 10 am Thursday, January 25 at Stroo Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery (Clyde Park Ave.)
