Norman James Bredeweg, age 87, a long time resident of Green Lake, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 7, 2017. Norm proudly served his country in the National Guard for six years and worked at General Motors 36th Street Fischer Body plant for over 40 years. He had a love for fast pitch softball and could often be found at the Moline ball diamond. For the past 25 years Norm and Evelyn enjoyed spending their winters in Sarasota, Florida. He was preceded in death by his sister, Audrey (John) Trumbull, and brother-in-law, Wayne Rozema. Norm will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn; his daughters, Rhonda Evans, Jackie (Kevin) Keizer, and Barb Kuiper; grandchildren, Jamie (Jim) Marshall, Ben (Melodie) Keizer, Shannon Keizer, Staci (Dan) VanSingel, Matthew Kuiper; great grandchildren, Grace, Simone, Vivian Marshall, with another expected in April; his brothers, Harvey (Polly) Bredeweg, Russell (Virginia) Bredeweg; sister-in-law, Pam (Louie) Waayenberg; many nieces and nephews. A service celebrating Norm's faith and life will be held 7 pm Wednesday, December 13, at Green Lake Calvary Church, 608 - 145th Ave., with Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Interment will be in Hooker Cemetery, Leighton Twp. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cystinosis Research Network. The family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday, December 12, from 5 - 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, and on Wednesday from 6 - 6:45 pm prior to the service at church.

On Saturday, December 9, 2017, James Van Dyke, age 85, went home to the mansion prepared for him. After a brief time of service with the U.S. Coast Guard, Jim went on to work as a painter, an occupation he enjoyed for his entire life. Known for his high energy and goofy sense of humor, Jim shared his passion for painting, boating, and sunny beaches with his family. When he wasn't working, he and his wife, Milly loved spending time in Aruba and Florida. He loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his family and will be dearly missed by his wife of 62 years; his children, Terry (Monica) Van Dyke, Sharon Joy Gordon, Janice Van Dyke, James S. (Michelle) Van Dyke; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; his sister, Mary Ann (Don) Furness; many nieces, nephews, and friends. A time to visit with Jim's family will be held on Saturday, December 16, from 2 - 3 p.m. at Stroo Funeral Home, where a memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. Contributions in memory of Jim may be made to the Children's Fund at Spiritual Care Consultants of West Michigan, 1375 W. Christian "Chris" Vanden Berg, aged 99, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, December 12, 2017. Chris proudly served in the US Navy during WWII. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena; three brothers and two sisters. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Allan (Hermena) Vanden Berg, Robert P. (Marie) Vanden Berg, Ruth (Carl) Clevenger, Marge Palmerlee; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Joann Bazuin; sister-in-law, Tressa Vanden Berg; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, December 16, at Moline Christian Reformed Church, 4341 Chappell St., with Rev. Jim DeZeeuw and Rev. Brian Kyle officiating. Interment in Dorr Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Chris may be made to Degage Ministries. The family will greet visitors on Friday from 5 - 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home and Saturday prior to the service from 10 - 10:45 am at the church.

Stuart Dirk Eppinga, Sr., age 92, of Grand Rapids, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, December 14, 2017. Stuart proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. An accomplished soloist, he was also a vocal music teacher and counselor in the Detroit Public School system. He loved the Detroit Tigers and played softball into his 80's. Preceding him in death are his wife, Helene (Batts); infant son, William; his father, Dirk; mother, Sjoerdina (Brolman); stepmother, Johanna (Geverink); brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Jacob and Anne Eppinga; his in-laws, Martin and Jeane Batts, John Batts, Herman and Marge Batts, and Rev. Jerome Batts. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Stuart D. Jr. (Vicky Scheerhorn) Eppinga of Holland, William J. (Arlene Van Hofwegen) Eppinga of California, Marla E. (Scott) Huizing of Alto; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; brothers, Pieter Eppinga, Johan Eppinga; sisters-in-law, Ruth Batts, Arlyn Batts; many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018 from 10 - 11:30 am at Raybrook Manor Chapel, 2121 Raybrook SE, where a memorial service will begin at 11:30 am. Rev. John Steigenga and Rev. Peter Jonker will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice.

Clifford E. Statler, age 86, of Cutlerville, went to be with his Lord on Friday, December 15, 2017. Cliff was an avid hunter and fisherman. He knew many of the hot spots for fishing and liked to fly fish for bluegill in the spring. His wife, Helen, preceded him in death. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Ben (Angela) Statler, Gary (Diane) Statler, Julie (Ron) Wynsma, David (Chris) Statler; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; brother, Charlie (Candi) Statler; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert Meunier, Carl (Darlene) Meunier, Evelyn Bubzinaki; many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, December 19, at Good News Baptist Church, 6830 Eastern Ave. SE, with Rev. Brian Cederquist and Rev. Terry Frazine officiating. There will be an hour of visitation prior to the service at the church. Interment in Blain Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Good News Baptist Church Building Fund.

"To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" II Corinthians 5:8. Daniel Jay Johnston, age 53, entered his heavenly home on Friday, December 15, 2017.
Dan was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and most importantly, a servant of our Lord. Dan served on numerous missions, touching lives locally and abroad. He received a Bachelor's degree from the International School of Ministry in 2013 after a 17 year long career with Steelcase. He then went on to serve at Walking By Faith as a Prayer Partner. Dan will be missed by all that had the pleasure to know him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Patricia (Knapp) Johnston; and sister, Patricia Johnston. Dan is survived by his wife of 22 years, Brenda (Lardie) Johnston; and will be lovingly remembered by his children: Nicolette and Andrew Happie, Shannon and Erik Schmidt; and grandchildren: Azaria and Gabriel Happie; brother, David Johnston; and sister, Veronica Johnston.
Family will greet visitors on Wednesday, December 20, from 11am – 12 pm at Resurrection Life Church in the Rez Center, 5120 Ivanrest, SW, where a Celebration of Life service will begin at 12 pm, with Pastor David Christian officiating. A Luncheon will immediately follow.

HASSELL (KACOS) - Jennifer Marie (Kacos) Hassell, aged 71, of Grand Rapids, passed away Saturday, December 16, 2017 ending her fight with lung and brain cancer and now her suffering is over. Jennifer worked at Michigan Bell and in the office at Spartan Warehouse. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Sarah Kacos. She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Lance (Lisa) Hassell; former husband, Lanny (Joanne) Hassell; her favorite and loving sister, Sandie Kornoelje and her boyfriend, Jim VanPortfliet; brothers, Fred (Roxanne) Kacos, Chris (Betty) Kacos, Andy Kacos; her favorite kids, Dikkens and Dally; wonderful girlfriends, the 3 Debs and Priscilla. Jennifer loved her maltese dogs and was very passionate about all dogs and animal welfare organizations. Contributions in memory of Jennifer may be made to the Humane Society of West Michigan. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at the Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th Street, SE; with Pastor Dennis Long officiating. Interment in Boynton Cemetery. The family will greet visitors on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the Stroo Funeral Home.

Richard G. Boeskool, age 71, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2017. Richard loved fishing. He will be deeply missed by his children, Jo Ann (Scott) Modlin, Richard Patrick Boeskool, Eva Boeskool, David Boeskool; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, David (Darlene) Boeskool; a special niece, Dana Boeskool, along with many other nieces and nephews. His brother, Daniel; a grandson, Colton; and his parents, Elmer and Betty Boeskool, preceded him in death. A Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Woody's Press Box, 5656 Clyde Park Ave. SW.
