Lester Young Haney was born on January 21, 1933, rejoined his bride of nearly sixty years on September 17, 2016 – just nine days after she preceded him to glory. Lester was born and raised in Grand Rapids, and graduated from Ottawa Hills High School. He was an Army veteran who served in Korea. After serving our country, he started a 38 year career with Michigan Bell Telephone. In 1956 he met his soulmate, Jean Mary Mudgett, and they were married in February 1957. Lester and Jean moved to a location his mother (obviously a city girl) referred to as “Indian territory” - way out on 60th Street, near Dutton. They joined St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, a newly formed church in Kentwood, and later attended Holy Family Catholic Church in Caledonia. They are survived by their children: Tim (Marj) Haney of Holland, Pam (Bruce) Cunningham of Breezy Point, MN, and Phil (Deb) Haney of Wayland. They also left behind eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren – and a host of nieces and nephews. While grieving the loss of his wife, Lester’s last days were filled with happiness. He spent time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. He even took time to attend a pool party with some of his family! While we will miss so much about him, we take comfort in knowing he is again with the love of his life. The family is humbled by the kind support so recently expressed by numerous family and friends, and invite them to gather once more to celebrate Lester and Jean's amazing love story. Visitation will be held at Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th St. SE (Cutlerville) on Sunday, September 25 from 5-7pm (Rosary will start at 6:30). A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church, 9669 Kraft Ave. SE, Caledonia on Monday, September 26, at 11AM, with visitation 1 hour prior. A joint graveside interment will follow after the luncheon, at 2:00 pm at Maplewood Cemetery, near Hopkins. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, or Blue Lakes Fine Arts Camp.
