Curtis Thorval Kolden
Curtis Thorval Kolden, who was a Proctor resident for most of his life and a 1976 graduate of Proctor High School, died unexpectedly Thurs., Sept. 8, 2005, in his home in Duluth. He was 47.

A resident of N. Central Ave., he was born on Aug. 29, 1958 in Duluth to Rueben and Ethel (Strom) Kolden. He had been an employee of St. Louis County as a food service worker at Mid Town Manor for the past 27 years. He was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Proctor. Curt loved birds and bird watching, nature and music. He was very soft hearted and cared about people.

Survivors include his parents Rueben and Ethel Kolden of Duluth, siblings Gerald Robinson of Duluth, Joanne (Tom) Blazejak of Proctor, James (Loan) Kolden of Lakeville, Daniel (Tracy) Kolden of Hermantown and Kathy (Virgil) Fox of Duluth, several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

A memorial service was held Tuesday in Bell Brothers Funeral Home, Rev. Joseph Koranda officiated.

Rae J. Nelson
Rae J. Nelson of Munger died Mon., Sept. 5, 2005, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was 73.

She was born in Duluth Aug. 17, 1932, and was a 1950 graduate of Central High School. Rae enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting and music. She worked in scheduling at Chris Jensen Nursing Home. She was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church, serving as Sunday School superintendent and teacher, the Ladies Aid and church choir. She also was a 4-H leader and member of the Proctor PTA.

Rae was preceded in death by her parents and brother Richard Olin.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years Norman, daughter Terry (Ronald) Blaisdell of Two Harbors, sons Gary (Pat) of Munger, Roger (Kathy) of Duluth and Randy (Virginia) of Hermantown, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held in Hope Lutheran Church. Burial at Oneota Cemetery.

Bernice O. (Haedt) Helland
Bernice O. (Haedt) Helland, who lived in Munger for 40 years before moving to Cloquet, died in Sunnyside Health Care Center, Cloquet on Sat., Oct. 8, 2005. She was 90.

She was born on Sept. 17, 1915 in Mankato, Minn., to Paul and Margaret (Lange) Haedt, moving to Duluth when she was six years old. She married Edward E. Helland in 1935 in Duluth. They lived in Munger 40 years and then moved to Cloquet. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Hope Ladies Aide and Munger and Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cloquet.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 53 years, grandson Dale Pelofske, brothers Howard, Harold and Wally Haedt, and sisters Irma Fitzgibbons and Darlene Glamazina.

She is survived by daughters Betty Peterson of Duluth and Donna (Don) Pelofske of Silver Bay, seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren, a sister Ardis Osland of St. Paul, sisters-in-law June Haedt and Rachel Helland, both of Cloquet, and Florence Haedt of Iowa, and also many nieces and nephews.

Visitation at 10 a.m. today, Thurs., Oct. 13, 2005, until the 11 a.m. Memorial Service in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 515 Skyline Blvd., Cloquet. Interment Solway Township Cemetery.

Ruth Gladys Fors Sjoblom
Ruth Gladys Fors Sjoblom of Duluth went home to be with her Lord on Tues., Oct. 4, 2005, at Bayshore Health Center in Duluth. She was 88.

Ruth was born Feb. 2, 1917 in Maywood, Ill. to John and Mathilda Fors. She graduated from Crystal Lake High School and was employed at Merchandise Mart in Chicago. She was Secretary at Bethel Baptist Church in Chicago, where she met and married Thomas Sjoblom on Nov. 8, 1941. At the end of WW II, Tom and Ruth moved to Duluth. She was employed at the St. Louis County Social Services until retirement in 1982. Ruth was active in the Women’s Ministry at Bethany Baptist Church and the Proctor High School Band Parents Association. She also enjoyed spending time and traveling to visit many friends and relatives. One of her greatest joys was the times she could spend with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with volunteering at Stowe Elementary School reading with the children.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years Tom, parents, sister Margaret, son Dan Sjoblom of North Pole, Alaska, and daughter Patricia VanReese of Nashwauk.

She is survived by her sister Alice Benson of Calif., sons Ron of Duluth and Bill of Austin, Texas, and daughter Linda (David) Blankenship of Spring, Texas, son-in-law David (Lois) VanReese of Nashwauk, daughter-in- law Darcey (John) Fullford of Fairbanks, Alaska, ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held Sat., Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. at Fond du Lac Community Church, 13104 West 6th St. in Duluth, with Pastor Nathan Sahlberg officiating.

Tammy Rae Buchanan
Tammy Rae Buchanan of Munger Shaw Road, Saginaw, died Sun., Oct. 2, 2005 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. She was 39.

She was born in Duluth, to George and Marsha Mehling. She was married to John Buchanan in Charlottesville, Va. She worked at Applebee’s in Cloquet.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, George and Ardis Mehling and Arnold and Erna Harstad, her great-grandparents, Carl and Ella Wedan and Benjamin and Agnus Ersland.

She is survived by her 10 year old son Christian Logan, sister Wendy Mehling, brothers George Mehling and Matthew Mehling, nieces Danna, Cassidy, and Brianna. and nephews Anthony and Cody. She will be sadly missed by her good friend, Michelle, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and all who loved her.

Services were held last week at Hermantown Community Church, Pastor Thor Sorenson will be officiating. Burial at Twig Cemetery.

Thomas Lloyd “Tommy Lloyd” Wilton
Thomas Lloyd “Tommy Lloyd” Wilton, who worked on the DM&IR for 25 years and was a lifelong resident of Brookston, died Fri., Oct. 7, 2005 in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. He was 76.

He was born April 8, 1929 in Cloquet to Thomas and Olga (Erickson) Wilton. He married Frieda Rasmussen on July 21, 1956 in Meadowlands and they made their home in Brookston. Tom owned and operated Brookston Garbage, and until recently, he owned Brookston Gas. He also worked at Wood Conversion and was a seaman on the Ore Boats for a few years. In 1964, Tom went to work for the DM&IR Railroad. He retired in 1989. Tom was a happy, easy going, family man. He made sure his family was always taken care of.

Tom was preceded in death by his sons Peter and Ronald, son-in-law Herb Anderson, great-grandson Cassidy, and one brother Bill.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years Frieda, his children Karen (Edward) Beargrease of Brookston, Thomas “Skip” (Judy) of Pensacola, Fla., Lloyd (Dawn Stamper) of Brookston, Laurie Anderson of Proctor, Kyle (Lauri) of Brookston, Karl (Rachel) of Floodwood, and Paul (Tammy) of Brookston, daughter-in-law Karen Wilton of Scanlon, brothers Donald (Kathy) of Brookston and Morris of Floodwood, sisters Edla (Wayne) Daglish of Bemidji and Evelyn Prusak of Brookston, 16 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many, many more that called him grandpa. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held earlier in the week. Burial will be in Culver Cemetery in Culver Township.

Joy Barbara Keachie
Joy Barbara Keachie, a Speech Therapist and Special Education teacher who retired from the Proctor School District in 2004, died unexpectedly Tues., Oct. 4, 2005 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. She was 57.

She was born in Duluth on June 14, 1948. She graduated from Duluth East High School in 1966 and went on to get her Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Therapy from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. She was the Academic Decathlon Advisor at Proctor High School, and was involved in staff development and Community Education with Proctor and other school districts. She was pursuing her Master’s Degree from Hamline University. She had been working at developing a business career in stress management. Joy was a generous and loving person, committed to helping other people with her knowledge, skills, and compassion. Joy lived a life of love and giving to others. We will miss the bright light of her being in this life but are confident that she will continue to keep us in her care as she moves forward on her journey.

Joy was preceded in death by her father Victor E. Keachie and mother Phyllis Keachie Cudmore.

She is survived by her sisters Susan Keachie of Cornucopia, Wis., Jan (Randy) McKeachie-Johnston of River Falls, Wis., nephews Ben Grams of Duluth, Kelly (Yeti Akenyemi) Johnston and son Olumide James of Chicago, IIl., and Charles Johnston of River Falls, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Services were held earlier in the week. Inurnment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to The Joy Keachie Memorial Fund in care of: Jan McKeachie-Johnston, N. 8336 690th St., River Falls, WI, 54022, and will be used to support educational programs for students that were close to Joy’s heart.

Harold P. “Bud” Thilmany
Harold P. “Bud” Thilmany, 88, died Sun., Oct. 23, 2005, in Edgewood Vista in Duluth.

He was born in Duluth to Henry and Frieda (Kovack) Thilmany on March 22, 1917. On May of 1941, Harold married Ruby Johncox. He joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Camps) and then enlisted in the Navy (Sea Bees) for three years. He served during WW II. Harold retired in 1979, after 29 years of service as a Locomotive Engineer on the DM&IR Railroad. Harold attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor, was a member of the Carpenter Union #361, Proctor Golden Age, Solway Seniors, NARVRE, United Transportation Union #92, Northern United Sportsmen, Hal Smith Spa, and the DM&IR Veterans Association.

Harold is preceded in death by his parents, a sister Ruth Meyers and grandson David Thilmany.

Surviving is his wife of 64 years Ruby, sons, Gerald (Margaret) of Duluth, Ronald (Dorothy) of Cloquet and Randy of San Jose, Calif., grandchildren Allan (Jennifer) Thilmany of Anchorage, Ak., Sarah (Kirk) Bustrom of Grand Rapids, Kirsten (Cameron) Tario of St. Paul, Mike Becker of Cromwell, and Ryan Thilmany of Cloquet, and six great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be held today, Thursday. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery.

Rae Pearson
Rae Pearson of Proctor died Sun., Nov. 6, 2005 at Viewcrest Health Center. She was 84.

She was born Dec. 9, 1920 in Duluth to Albert and Rebecca (Walker) Anderson. Rae graduated from Denfeld High School in 1939. She married Roy Pearson Dec. 10, 1940 in Duluth. Rae was a member of the DWP Railroad Retirement Club and the West Duluth American Legion. She enjoyed fishing, especially for brook trout, gardening and was an animal lover.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Lee and Hubert Anderson.

Rae is survived by her husband of almost 65 years Roy, daughter Arlene Pearson of Duluth, son Gary (Eileen) Pearson of Duluth, grandsons G. Scott Pearson of Nevada and Michael (Tracy) Pearson of Duluth, and great-granddaughter Makayla.

A private family service was held.

Robert E. “Bob” Barlage, Jr.
Services were held Sun., Nov. 6, 2005 for Robert E. “Bob” Barlage, Jr. He died Wed., Nov. 2, 2005, peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his loving family. He was 70.

He was born Sept. 4, 1935 in Graceville, Minn., to Robert and Adeltrude “Del” (Hamilton) Barlage, Sr. Bob served his country in the United States Army. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion Post 137. Bob enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Bob is survived by his mother Adeltrude “Del”, sister Marlene (Bill) Lindgren, brother Richard (Margaret) Barlage, children Shawn Cordell, Beth Ann Gabrielson, Tina Marie Illikainen, Robert Barlage and Greg Barlage, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Service was held in the Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel, with Pastor Mark Osthus officiating. Burial in Oneota Cemetery.
