John R. “Jack” Kaptonak, Sr.
Nancy (Dan) Swanson of Solway is in bereavement following the death of her father, John R. “Jack” Kaptonak, Sr. He died from Parkinson’s related complications Wed., Nov. 2, 2005, in his Duluth home surrounded by his loving family. He was 82.

Jack was born in Superior. He began helping on his Grandpa Sislo’s farm and was a newsboy during the depression. Jack graduated from Superior Central High School in 1941. During World War II, he was a motor machinist mate second class. Jack married Rosella Roach on Oct. 3, 1959. He worked on the Great Northern/Burlington Railroad for over 36 years. Jack was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Conrad.

John is survived by his wife Rosella, his other children Susan (Duane) Anderson, Mary (Dale) Siemsen of Hermantown, Barbara Kaptonak, John Kaptonak, Jr., Jim Kaptonak of Duluth and Bill (Wendy) Kaptonak of Sauk Rapids, ten grandchildren, sister Louise McCaffrey of Duluth, brother Donald (Ethyl) Kaptonak of New Lenox, Ill., numerous nieces and nephews, special aunt Rose Nollet, and several cousins.

Service was held Saturday in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church with Father John Petrich officiating. Burial took place at Oneota Cemetery. Military rites were accorded by the Navy Honor Guard.

Vernon Carlyle Wilson
Vernon Carlyle Wilson, lifelong resident of the Duluth - Proctor area, passed away Sun., Nov. 13, 2005, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was 84.

He was born July 13, 1921, in Duluth, to Clyde and Alice Wilson. Vernon was a 1938 graduate of Denfeld High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1943, as a Combat Engineer. Vernon was a strong, supporter of the Disabled American Veterans Association and an active member of American Legion Post 71.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his daughter Barbara Olson.

Vernon is survived by his wife Alma, son W. Duane (Karen) Wilson, five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will not be held at this time. Inurnment will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery

Leon Douglas Overom
Leon Douglas Overom, who was born in Proctor, was a 1942 graduate of Proctor High School and started his career with the Proctor Water and Light, died peacefully on Wed., Nov. 9, 2005, surrounded by his family. He was 81.

The Burnsville resident was born on Oct. 7, 1924, to Melvin and Blanche Overom. He studied aircraft mechanics at the Aero Industries Technical Institute in Burbank, Calif. Leon served in World War II and was awarded several medals including a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Upon his return from the war, Leon attended the Duluth Jr. College for Engineering and then the University of Minnesota where he earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree. He was united in marriage with Joanne M. Overom (nee Hedeen) on Nov. 26, 1949. After working for the PWL he spent 34 years as an Electrical Engineer at Minnesota Power and Light. He was a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) and the Kiwanis Club in Duluth. Leon enjoyed reading, playing cribbage and bridge.

He is survived by his loving wife Joanne of Burnsville, sons Tim (Jackie) of Burnsville and Steve (Julie) of Barnes, Wisc., twin daughters Lisa of Bloomington, and Laura (Craig) Joseph of Wayne, N.J., five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter

Services were held earlier in the week. Burial at Oneota Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Warren W. ‘Bud’ Peterson
Warren W. ‘Bud’ Peterson, who was born in Proctor attended Munger elementary school and graduated in 1939 from Proctor senior high school and spent his career at the DM&IR Railroad, passed away Monday Nov. 14, 2005 in Chris Jensen Nursing Home. He was 84.

The Swan Lake Road resident was born on May 3, 1921 to Alfred and Ruth (Hennings) Peterson. In 1939, right after high school, Warren started to work for the DM&IR Railroad and in 1942 served in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator during the China Burma Theatre and drove trucks on the Burma road during World War II. After the war, Warren came back in 1945 and continued on with his career at the DM&IR Railroad. On May 28, 1948, Warren married the love of his life, Velda Leatham in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Warren was very devoted to his wife Velda for 57 1/2 years and his family for a lifetime. With his appreciation for a good golf game, Warren was very proud at the age of 82, to have hit a ‘Hole In One.’

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Carol Davis; and his great granddaughter, Lillian P. Peterson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 1/2 years, Velda of Duluth; two sons, Kent (Tina) of Duluth, Brian (Sandy) of Warrenville, Ill.; two daughters, Barbara (Eric) Chase of Mountain Home, Alaska, Sharon Peterson of Provo, Utah; 18 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren, two brothers, Marvin (Jean) of Hermantown, Minn., and Marlin of Banning, Calif.; and two sisters, Marion (Tony) Hargreaves of Lexington, Ky., Arlene (Richard) Hart of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho.

Service was held Saturday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Burial at Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery, Hermantown. Military honors were accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guards.

Herbert Lundberg
Herbert Lundberg, formerly of Adolph and who retired from the DM&IR railroad, died Thurs., Nov. 24, 2005 at Mercy Health Care Center in Moose Lake. He was 82.

He was born May 15, 1923 in Adolph to Erick and Mary (Gulbranson) Lundberg. Herb married Betty Fairbanks June 21, 1944 in Adolph. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, and traveling with his wife after retirement.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife Betty in 2004, and numerous brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his sons Larry of Clarkston, Wash. and Brian (Peggy) of Moose Lake, daughters Susan of Hastings, Kim (Scott) Thudin of Cromwell, and Missy (Lonnie) Seipel of Maiden Rock, Wis., nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held last Tuesday.

Lee Kurt Johnson
Area residents are mourning the death of Lee Kurt Johnson. He died Fri., Dec. 9, 2005 at his Eveleth residence. He was 78.

Lee Kurt is survived by his wife of 46 years Elaine L. and their children Kurt (Teresa) Johnson of Hermantown, Robert (Mary) Johnson of Eveleth, Diana (Al) Pederson of Bemidji, Lee W. Johnson of Culver, and Dylan (Susan) Johnson of Pike Lake, and grandchildren Heather, Michelle, Haakon, Luke, Shawn, Levi, Raija and Matthew.

Funeral services were earlier in the week at United Methodist Church in Eveleth.

Kandice Maureen Linskie
Kandice Maureen Linskie of Proctor passed away Fri., Dec. 16, 2005 peacefully at her home after a long battle with brain cancer. She was 44.

Kandice was born on Sept. 16, 1961 to Harold and Ruby (Anderson) Roland in Duluth. She was a very devoted and loving mother and a woman of deep faith in God. She blessed every person who knew her. Kandice was very active in church activities. She loved cats.

Kandice is survived by her parents Harold and Ruby Roland, son Andrew Linskie, Dean Roland, sister Kim (Martin) Christensen, Kelleen Roland, nieces Desi Roland, Alina Christiansen, nephews Martin Christiansen, great-nephew Austin Roland and many friends.

Services were held Tuesday with Rev. John Halverson officiating.

Emil J. Durovec
Loretta (Mike) Billman of Twig is mourning the death of her father, Emil J. Durovec of Meadowlands, who died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. He was 82.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Joseph, Anthony, Steve, and Louis Durovec; sisters, Irene Durovec and Jean Soukup; and a grandson, Adam Kozumplik.

He is also survived by his loving wife of over 49 years, Mary Ann; sons, John (Darletta) and Daniel (Danielle) both of Meadowlands, daughters, Ann (Dennis) Lind of Cook, Diane (Joe) Olson and Lynette (Anthony) Kozumplik, both of Meadowlands and Joan (Steve) Johnson of Cromwell; 21 gandchildren, and five great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial was held in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery of Elmer.

Jorgean “Ginger” A. Hedegaard
Janet Casey of Proctor is saddened by the death of her sister, Jorgean “Ginger” A. Hedegaard. The Carlton resident died Wed., Dec. 14, 2005 in Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. She was 65.

She was born in Hibbing. Ginger was married to Dick Hedegaard in Bethel Lutheran Church in Scanlon in 1963. She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Carlton; the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #1163 Auxiliary; the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1274 Auxiliary; the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 Auxiliary; the Red Hatters of Carlton and Duluth; and two camping clubs, the Harbor Lights and the Wood City Ramblers.

Ginger was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years Dick, sons Bill Hedegaard of Motley, Minn. and Dan (Carrie) Hedegaard of San Diego, Calif., daughters Shelia (Al) Mattson of Duluth and Heidi Schleski of Duluth, two other sisters Karen Klose of Minneapolis and Janice (Charles) Stevens of Ashland, grandchildren Jason, Chazz, Dennis, Sarah and Robert, two great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Nancy (Tom) Panger of Jacksonville, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation today, Thurs., Dec. 22, 2005 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. memorial service in Bethesda Lutheran Church. Spring inurnment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery.

Rueben L. Kolden
A memorial service will be held today, Thurs., Dec. 29, for Rueben L. Kolden of Proctor. He died on Mon., Dec. 19, 2005. He was 80.

Rueben was born on March 21, 1925 to Thorval and Palma (Johnson) Kolden. He was born and raised in the Thief River Falls area. Rueben served in the Army during World War II in Italy as a combat engineer. He briefly lived in the Seattle, Wash. area after the war. Rueben was united in marriage to Ethel Strom on Dec. 17, 1955. He was a long time employee and retiree on the DM&IR. Rueben was a devoted husband and father, he was well known as a helpful friend and neighbor and you would often find him working in his garage.

Rueben was preceded in death by his sisters Thelma Toren, Lorna Johnson and Carol, brothers Floyd and Richard and son Curtis.

He is survived by his wife Ethel, daughters Joanne (Thomas) Blazejak and Kathleen (Virgil) Fox, sons Gerald Robinson, James (Loan) and Daniel (Tracy), grandchildren Laurie and Michael Blazejak, Stephanie and Nikki Kolden, and Melissa and Kristen Kolden, great-granddaughter Kylee, sisters Janet (Bill) Doxrude, Bernice Ruble, and Lyla (Al) Burnett and brothers Kendall (Vickie), Roger, Jim (Connie), Orval (Makia) and Earl (Marge).

The service will be held at 2 p.m. in the Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel, 4100 Grand Avenue in Duluth. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.

John M. Gunderson
John M. Gunderson, who was born in Proctor and graduated from its high school, died Wed., Dec. 21, 2005 in his Duluth home, surrounded by his loving family. He was 82.

John was born Jan. 13, 1923 in Proctor to Peter and Marie Gunderson. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He returned to Duluth and married Norine Proff on Oct. 6, 1951. John retired in 1983 as a machinist with DMIR Railroad. John was a member of NARVRE, VFW Post 137, International Machinist Union and AFSCME Local 96 retirees, was a former member of the Proctor Moose and served in the CCC’s at Tofte. He loved traveling, the outdoors, camping and cross country skiing.

John was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harold and Roy, his sister Marie, and his daughter Paula.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years Norine, children John F. Gunderson of Las Vegas, Laurie (Stephen) Hanson of Saginaw, and James (Carolyn) Gunderson of Duluth, grandchildren Kevin and Stacey Hanson and Daniel Parr, his sister Helen Sanda, many nieces and nephews, and his furry friend, Kirby.

Services were held Tuesday with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.
