Cheryl Mazeikis

Cheryl Marie Mazeikis, 26, Moorhead, MN, died Friday, June 6, 2003, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND. Cheryl was born May 26, 1977, in Elk Grove, IL, to Dolores and LeRoy Mazeikis. She is survived by her parents, Moorhead; and two sisters, Cynthia (Randy) Carrillo, Moorhead, and Carolyn (Randy) Fiechtner, West Fargo, ND.

Visitation: Thursday, June 12, 2003; one hour before funeral

Funeral Mass: Thursday, June 12, 2003 - 2 PM St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moorhead, MN

Interment: St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead, MN

Vilgard Sorgen

Vilgard Irene Daehlin was born in Hunan Province, China, December 15, 1908, to Ingvald and Emma (Hasle) Daehlin. Vilgard spent her early years in China and returned to the United States when she was eighteen years of age. She graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, and taught english and music in Watford City, ND.

On January 1, 1935, Vilgard married Rev. Sanford Sorgen, in St. Paul, MN. Over the years, they lived in Lake Alma, Saskatchewan, Canada, Crosby, ND, Valley City, ND, and LaCrosse, WI, where Sanford served in the ministry. In 1953, they were called to Moorhead, where a new church was being organized: the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. While in Moorhead, Vilgard returned to Concordia College for her library science degree. In 1970, they moved to Blair, NE. Vilgard continued to teach as well as serve as librarian in the communities where they lived over the years, until she retired in 1974. Vilgard and Sanford returned to Moorhead in 1975.

Sanford preceded Vilgard in death on March 11, 1999, and she remained in Moorhead. Vilgard died Tuesday, November 4, 2003, in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, at ninety-four years of age.

Vilgard is lovingly survived by her three sons, Dr. David Sorgen and his wife, Beverley, Fargo, Daniel Sorgen and his wife, Kitty, Newbury Park, CA, and Dr. Stephen Sorgen and his wife, Jeannie, Abilene, TX; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a sister, Julie Helstrom, Minneapolis, MN.

Visitation for Vilgard will be Friday, November 7, 2003, from 6 - 8 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Her funeral will be Saturday, November 8, 2003, at 1 PM, in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead, with burial to follow in Prairie Home Cemetery, Moorhead.

Gertrude Carpenter

Gert was born December 20, 1916, to Odin and Gilla (Sabby) Swanson. She grew up on a farm near Hannaford, North Dakota, and attended school in Dover Township. Gert was united in marriage to Howard Carpenter on September 4, 1949, in Moorhead. Howard and Gert raised their family in Moorhead. After his death in 1999, Gert continued to live in their north Moorhead home until just recently when she moved to an assisted living apartment.

Gertrude O. Carpenter died Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at her apartment at Eventide The Fairmont in Moorhead, MN, where she had lived since November, at eighty-six years of age.

Gert was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and friends and spent many hours doing beautiful handwork. For several years, she did babysitting in her home. Later, she and Howard did custodial work for American Crystal Sugar after his retirement from the Fargo Foundry. Gert was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary, both Moorhead.

She is survived by a daughter, Cleo (Harold) Parrow, Moorhead; two sons, Larry (Judy) Carpenter, Moorhead, and Roger (Ann) Carpenter, Cologne, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Kristi (John) Paulson, Moorhead, Tammy Carpenter, Fort Collins, Colorado, Dan Parrow and Sheri Parrow, Moorhead, Rachel Carpenter and Reed Carpenter, Cologne; three great-grandchildren, John, Michael, and Alyssa Paulson, Moorhead; one sister, Edna Hunter, Jamestown; three brothers, Clarence and Alvin Swanson, Wimbledon, ND, and Orin (Helen) Swanson, Moorhead; one brother-in-law, Garfield Anderson, Truth or Consequences, New Mexico; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two sisters, Evelyn Swanson and Doris Anderson.

Funeral: Monday, December 15, 2003, at 11 AM Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Moorhead

Alan Nelson

Alan S. Nelson, 85, St. Paul, MN, formerly of Moorhead, MN, died Monday, December 29, 2003, at Lyngblomsten Care Center, St. Paul.

Alan Spencer Nelson, son of Arthur and Marie (Dronen) Nelson, was born in Lawton, ND, on May 10, 1918. He lived in Wales, ND, where he graduated from high school in 1935. He moved to Page, ND, that same year and worked for the Page Elevator Co. for over 4 years prior to entering the Army during WW II. Alan served for 3 and one half years, mostly overseas, and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

After his discharge in 1945, Alan was united in marriage to Lillian Christensen, of Luverne, ND, in Grand Rapids, MI. The couple made their home in Minneapolis, MN, where Alan worked part time at Sears department store while attending Dunwoody Industrial Institute.

The couple returned to Page in 1947, where Alan went into business with his brother Dewey, in Duke’s Auto Body and Paint Shop. Later, they purchased the Chevrolet franchise. Alan as appointed as a rural mail carrier in 1948. In 1971, he transferred to Harwood, ND, to be near his family which was living in Moorhead, where Lillian taught school and the children could attend college. Alan retired from the postal service in 1975. His wife Lillian died in 2002.

Alan is survived by four children, Sandra Hewitt, Stillwater, MN, Craig (Cherie) Nelson, Omaha, NE, Gail (Bill) Michalek, San Diego, CA, and Peggy Nelson, Minneapolis; seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a sister, Bonnie (Robert) Zube, Woodbury, MN. In addition to his wife Lillian, Alan was preceded in death by a daughter, Margo, his parents, and one brother, Dewey Nelson.

Hilda Olson

Hilda P. Olson, 95, Sioux City, IA, formerly of Moorhead, MN, died Tuesday, December 30, 2003, in Countryside Senior Living, Sioux City.

Hilda Petrina Eggen was born May 3, 1908, in Ambrose, ND, to Nels and Marit (Lillegen) Eggen. Hilda spent her early years in Ambrose and Lignite, ND, and graduated from high school in Bowbells, ND. She received a business degree in Minneapolis, MN. Hilda lived and worked in Milaca, MN, and Bismarck, ND.

Hilda married Almar C. Olson, September 30, 1939, in Bismarck. They lived in Fargo, ND, and Portland, OR, before returning to Fargo in 1944. They moved to Moorhead a short time later. Hilda worked as a secretary in law offices in Bowbells and at the state capital in Bismarck. Almar died August 5, 1990, and Hilda moved to Sioux City later that year.

Hilda is survived by two daughters, Karen Ovsak, Fargo, and Janice Oss, Sioux City; and five grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Norman and Clifford Eggen; and a son-in-law, Dr. L. Douglas Oss.

Gladys Peterson

Gladys Marie Markegard was born December 16, 1917, in Moorhead, MN, to Alfred Ole and Jennie Othilia (Johnson) Markegard. She was baptized February 12, 1918. Gladys was raised in Moorhead where she attended high school. For a number of years, Gladys worked at Bill’s Club, Moorhead, and as a housekeeper for the Herbert Goldberg family in Moorhead.

On October 7, 1941, Gladys married Lawrence Carl Peterson in Moorhead and they lived and farmed south of Moorhead. During that time, Gladys worked at Ernie’s Market, Moorhead. After they retired in 1970, they moved into Moorhead where they lived until Lawrence’s death on February 9, 1980. She remained in Moorhead until moving to Houge Estates Assisted Living, Dilworth, in 2002. Gladys entered Rosewood on Broadway in August of 2003, where she died Tuesday, December 9, 2003, at eighty-five years of age.

Gladys is survived by her one daughter, Sharon (Ronald) Sall, Moorhead; one son, Larry (Jean) Peterson, Moorhead; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Jane Dickelman, Moorhead; and one brother, Clarence (Jean) Markegard, Moorhead.

Visitation: one hour before the funeral at the church

Ernest Rehder

Ernest H. Rehder, 90, Moorhead, MN, died Monday, December 15, 2003, in the VA Medical Center, Fargo, ND.

Ernest Henry Rehder was born October 7, 1913, to Frank and Dora (Schmidt) Rehder, in Sabin, MN, where he grew up and attended school.

Ernest served in the US Army during WWII from 1941 to 1945. On November 30, 1946, he married Evelyn Leach in Moorhead where they made their home. Ernest worked as an assistant superintendent for American Crystal Sugar Company, Moorhead, for thirty-two years, retiring in 1978.

Ernest is survived by is wife, Evelyn, Moorhead; two sons, Larry (Carolyn) Rehder, Boulder City, NV, and Dale Rehder, West Fargo, ND; a grandson; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Francis Bennett, Minneapolis, MN, and Helen Steen, Moorhead.

John "Jack" Schreiner

John Dennis Schreiner was born December 2, 1933, in Graceville, MN, to Richard and Frances (Boyle) Schreiner. In 1943, the family moved to Dilworth, MN, where Jack graduated from high school in 1952. Jack entered the US Army on July 16, 1956, and was stationed in Germany. On July 15, 1958, Jack was discharged from the Army and returned to Dilworth.

Jack married Esther Lehfeldt, Nov. 23, 1960, in Moorhead and they made their home in the Moorhead area. Jack worked for the Northern Pacific Railway for a time and then for Silverline Boats in Moorhead. He returned to work for Burlington Northern Railway as an engineer until he retired. Jack died Monday, December 29, 2003, in his home, at seventy years of age.

Jack is survived by one son, John (Lydia) Schreiner, West Fargo, ND; two daughters, Cheri (Philip) Keller, Dilworth, and Debra (Robert) Kinnen, Glyndon, MN; six grandchildren, Trevor, Amber and Carter Keller, and Jacob, Nicholas and Michael Kinnen; four brothers, Richard Schreiner Jr., Dilworth, Donald (Dot) Schreiner and James (Gerane) Schreiner, both Moorhead, and William (June) Schreiner, Mandan, ND; and two sisters, Lorita (Howard) Nelson, Dilworth, and Lorraine (Jerald) Gilbertson, Lake Park, MN.

In addition to his parents, an infant daughter, Mary Frances; and two brothers, Victor and Thomas preceded Jack in death.
