BenVern "Ben" Klug

BenVern Eugene Klug was born February 6, 1931, to Ewald and Dorothea (Kuehl) Klug, in Barnesville, MN. Ben was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sabin, MN. He graduated from Barnesville High School and from Interstate Business College, Fargo, ND, and was employed with Super Valu Stores, Inc. for thirty-four years. Ben held several different positions during his career with Super Valu and retired as a buyer. Ben married Marjorie Zurkan, September 12, 1959, in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN. He and Marjorie retired the same day and spent the next thirteen winters in Mesa, AZ.

Ben was an avid sports fan and played on the Super Valu softball and bowling teams. He also decided it was much more fun to spend the winters in Fargo watching the local sports teams that it was to go to Arizona. So the last five winters were spent at local high school and college games; with Ben’s favorite being the NDSU Bison. Ben had ten older brothers and sisters and truly loved spending time with them as well as his many nieces and nephews.

Ben belonged to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he served on a number of boards and committees. He was also a member of Roughriders Kiwanis Club, the Red River Valley Carving Club and the Senior Golf Tour. Ben died Wednesday, October 15, 2003, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, at seventy-two years of age.

Ben is lovingly survived by his wife, Marjorie; two brothers, Jennings (Olivia), Minot, ND, and Elton (Lois), Chanhassen, MN; three sisters, Irene Cook, Moorhead, Ruth Thunberg, Alexandria, MN, and Delda Ash, Boise, ID; two sisters-in-law, Delores Klug, Moorhead and Alma Klug, Fargo; a brother-in-law, Bob Patzmann, Minneapolis, MN; his much-loved thirty-nine nieces and nephews and their spouses; his wife’s family, Russell, Alma and Molly Zurkan; his true and loyal friends in the “Nickel Club”; and his longtime friend, Bob Brown.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Florence Patzmann and Leona Overby; and brothers, Hubert, Clarence and Waldo Klug.

Visitation for Ben will be Sunday, October 19, 2003, from 6 - 8 PM, with a prayer service at 7:30 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. His funeral will be Monday, October 20, 2003, at 2 PM, in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Moorhead. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Sabin.

Jane Walker Kegel

Jane Kegel, 72, Moorhead, MN, died Saturday, September 13, 2003, in her home in Moorhead.

Ellen Jane Shea was born in Fargo, ND, on October 8, 1930, to Laura (Duffy) and Eugene Timothy Shea. Following the death of her mother in 1935, her aunt, Agnes Duffy, raised Jane. She attended school in Fargo, graduating from Sacred Heart High School and North Dakota Agricultural College. Jane began a life-long career in education as a teacher in Harvey, ND, and then Mandan, ND.

Jane married Robert Earl Walker on June 4, 1955. She and Robert lived and farmed in Traill County until Robert’s death in 1970. During their time on the farm she taught English and Mathematics in Kindred, Clifford-Galesburg and Mayville-Portland. In 1979, Jane completed a Masters in Education at North Dakota State University and later attained a Doctor of Philosophy in Education at the University of North Dakota.

On March 4, 1978, Jane married David Kegel and resided in Moorhead. Upon completion of her Ph.D., Jane continued her teaching passion as a senior lecturer in the English and Education departments at North Dakota State University until her retirement in 1994.

Jane was an impassioned educator who touched the lives of many young minds during her teaching career. She was an active contributor to Delta Kappa Gamma Society International where she held offices at the local, state and international levels. Jane was also a member of P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter Co. As a respected educator, Jane received the Robert Odney Award for Excellence in Teaching at NDSU in 1994. She was also the recipient of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society Distinguished Citation Award.

In addition to her passion for education, Jane was gifted in quilting, needlework and knitting and shared those talents generously with her family and friends. She was a gifted writer, researching and scripting numerous family histories and cookbooks. She also enjoyed writing for professional organizations.

Jane is survived by six children, Robert (Delaine) Walker, Haymarket, VA; Michael (Diane) Walker, San Diego, CA; Larry (Nancy) Walker, Killdeer, ND; Laura (Gerald) Sturn, Bismarck, ND; Jim (Margit) Kegel, Eugene, OR; Jon Kegel, Moorhead; sister-in-law, Marguerite Walker, Mayville, ND; 11 grandchildren, Aaron, Tyler, Daniel, Stephanie, Matthew, Ross, and Alyssa Walker, Catie and Emily Sturn and Mary and Anne Kegel; nieces and nephews, Cheryl Esch, Racine, WI; Donovan (Anne) Walker, Libby, MT; Dwight (Mari) Walker, St. Cloud, MN; Mark (Mary Lou) Walker, Fargo; Scott Walker, Eveleth, MN; Kim Walker, Birmingham, AL; Patrick (Michelle) Walker, Lisbon, ND; Fred Walker, Bismarck; and special friend, Jim Gompf, Fargo.

Her parents, Timothy and Laura Shea; her husbands, Robert Walker and David Kegel; a son, Timothy Walker;a grandson, Andrew Kegel; her aunt, Agnes Duffy; and brothers-in-law, Daniel and Benjamin Walker; preceded her in death.

Jane loved her work, her students, her community, her friends, and especially her family. She will be greatly missed.

Prayer service: Wednesday, at 8 PM in Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Mayville, ND. Memorial service: Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, 11 AM Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN.

Hazel Wagar

Hazel R. Wagar, age 85, of Fargo, ND, died on Thursday, August 28, 2003, at Bethany Homes in Fargo.

Hazel Rena Johnson, the daughter of Archie and Rena (Oldfield) Johnson, was born at Clark, SD, on Nov. 30, 1917. The family lived in Klamath Falls, Oregon, for a short time and then returned to the Clark area, where Hazel grew up and received her education. She graduated from high school in Garden City, SD, in 1937. As a young lady, Hazel moved to Valley City, ND, where she worked in a number of private homes. On May 27, 1941, Hazel was married to Elmer Wagar at Valley City, where they made their home. Hazel worked for a number of years at Vogue Cleaners in Valley City. In December of 1999, Hazel and Elmer moved to Fargo, ND, to live. In March of 2003, Hazel became a resident of Bethany Homes in Fargo.

Hazel is survived her husband, Elmer, Fargo; three daughters, Nancy (August) Jantzon, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Barbara (Bill) Romer, Omaha, NE, and Nadine (Jim) Van Dyke, Valley City; two sons, Mark (Judy) Wagar, West Fargo, ND, and Timothy (Robin) Wagar, Asuncion, Paraguay; three brothers, Newman Johnson, and Royal (Phyllis) Johnson and Robert (Doris) Johnson, both of Omaha; 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Monday, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, and one hour before the funeral on Tuesday, at the church.

Funeral service: Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at 11 AM MeadowRidge Bible Chapel, West Fargo, ND.

Burial: Memory Gardens, Valley City, ND.

Calin Tudor

Calin Tudor, age 80, of Fargo, ND, died Friday, October 17, 2003, at Bethany Homes in Fargo.

Calin was born in Romania, on Dec. 10, 1922. He grew up and received his education in Romania. On October 23, 1971, Calin was married to Lidia Carcona, at Bucharest, Romania. They lived in Bucharest, where he worked as an economist in a government office.

In 1987, the family moved to the United States, where they made their home in Fargo. In 2002, Calin became a resident of Bethany Homes in Fargo.

He is survived by his wife, Lidia, Fargo; three daughters Cornelia (John) Alexandrescu, Cucamonga, CA, Daniela (Ilie) Vasile, Fontana, CA, and Ileana (James) Bryan, Minneapolis, MN; a son, Narcis (Rebecca) Tudor, Durango, CO; and nine grandchildren. In addition, two brothers and a sister survive in Romania.

Visitation: One hour prior to the funeral, at the church.

Funeral service: Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at 1 PM Bethel Evangelical Free Church, Fargo, North Dakota.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.

Kathy Swenson

Kathy Swenson was born in Tower City, ND, to Chester Laney and Lorraine Kretchmer on March 24, 1944. She died at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND, on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, after a short battle with thyroid cancer.

Kathy attended school in Glyndon, MN. She graduated in 1962. Kathy married Clifford Swenson on Oct. 19, 1963. They lived in Felton, MN. She worked for Borgan Phone Co. Kathy joined American Crystal Sugar Company, where she has worked for the last 30 years. In 1977 Kathy moved to Moorhead, MN, and in 1982 to her present home in Glyndon. Kathy won several awards for her beautiful flower garden. She loved caring for the birds, traveled often, and spent many hours at the lake. She especially loved the times spent with her children and grandchildren.

Kathy is survived by her special friend and companion, Judy Vantassel, Glyndon; a son, John (Deb) Swenson, Hawley, MN; two daughters, Jolene Swenson and Jana (Tim) Wiecks, both Fargo; seven grandchildren, Bryan, Christopher, Parker and Alexis Swenson of Hawley, Jeffrey Garten Jr., Jessica Gomez and Cassandra Wiecks of Fargo; five brothers, Chester (Lynn) Laney, Fargo, Jerome (Marilyn) Laney, Scottsdale, AZ, Steven (Peggy) Laney, Detroit Lakes, MN, Jeff (Sheila) Laney, Fargo, and Kelly (Linda) Laney, Moorhead; a sister, Karen Thompson, Moorhead; many nieces and nephews, many friends, and her beloved dogs, Kirby, Rusty and Rat.

She was preceded in death by her father, Chester Laney; her mother, Lorraine Kretchmer; and her stepfather, Alderich “Jack” Trottier.

Visitation: Thursday, 6 PM to 8 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Prayer Service: Thursday at 7 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Funeral service: Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at 10:30 AM Grace United Methodist Church 1120 17th Street South, Moorhead.

Burial: St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead.

Evelyn Sylvester Spotts

Evelyn Lenore Johnson was born August 14, 1908, in Portland, ND, to J.E. and Olga (Koppang) Johnson. Evelyn graduated from high school in Thompson, ND, and from Mayville (ND) State College with a teaching degree. She taught in Emerado, ND. Evelyn married Hans Sylvester in 1928 and they lived and farmed at Thompson. Following his death in 1936, Evelyn and the family moved to Hatton, ND. While in Hatton, Evelyn was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a past Worthy Matron. She taught in Jamestown, ND, from 1944 to 1963, when she married William Spotts. They made their home in Moorhead, MN. William died in 1976 and Evelyn continued to reside in Moorhead. She entered Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, in May 2001, where she died Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at ninety-five years of age.

Evelyn is lovingly survived by her daughter, Jean (George) Stenehjem, Edina, MN; a son, Bill (Ollie) Spotts, Bismarck, ND; daughter-in-law, Betty Sylvester, McLean, VA; three granddaughters, Greta (Clifford) Hardwick, Kirsten (Martin) Shumway and Debbie (Dave) Bjornson; three grandsons, John Stenehjem, Hans (Katrina) Sylvester and Steve (Joy) Spotts; seven great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her husbands, a son, Christopher Sylvester and two brothers, Vernon and Duane Johnson preceded Evelyn in death.

Visitation will be Friday, September 26, 2003, from 6 - 8 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. The funeral will be Saturday, September 27, 2003, at 11 AM in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead. Burial will be Saturday at 3 PM in St. John Cemetery, Hatton. Memorials are preferred to either Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd or Eventide Lutheran Home.

Bobby Spivey

Bobby E. Spivey, 48, Sabin, MN, passed away October 25, 2003, at his home, under the care of hospice.

Bobby Eugene Spivey Sr. was born September 16, 1955, to Ruby (Alverson) and Thomas Spivey in Huntsville, AL, where he grew up and received his education. He worked as an over-the road trucker.

He married Cheryl Heier on August 21, 1987, in Moorhead, MN, and they made their home in Sabin.

Bobby is survived by his wife, Cheryl; four sons, Bobby (Andrea) Jr. and James, both Alabama, Charles and Cody, both Sabin; three brothers, Robert (Diane), Joe Willy (Mary), and Thomas (Inez), all of Gurley, AL; and one grandchild.

Memorial Service: Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at 2 PM Brookdale Baptist Church Moorhead, MN

Virginia Schmidt

Virginia Marie Schmidt, 91, Moorhead, MN, died Sunday, September 28, 2003, in Moorhead Healthcare Center.

Virginia was born September 9, 1912, to Edwin and Anna Marie (Lindquist) Hendrickson, in Fargo, ND, where she was raised and received her education. Virginia married Edward Schmidt, September 6, 1940, in Moorhead, where they made their home.

Edward died March 14, 1989, and Virginia continued to reside in Moorhead. She entered Moorhead Healthcare Center in 1992.

Virginia is survived by two sisters, Florence Skodji, Dilworth, MN, and Better Everhardt, Fargo; a brother, Floyd Hendrickson, Fargo, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service: Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 7 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead
