Raymond C. Erickson

Raymond C. Erickson, 77, Dilworth, MN, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, in Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Fargo, ND, surrounded by his loved ones. He has found peace after a long struggle with emphysema.

Ray was born September 22, 1926, to Conrad and Mabel (Sather) Erickson, in Clearbrook, MN, where he grew up and attended school. He served in the army during WW II, and was stationed in the Philippines and Korea, where he received numerous decorations and citations

On April 29, 1952, Ray married Alvina Schieffer in Browerville, MN. They moved to Dilworth in 1957. Ray worked for thirty-eight years at Branick’s Manufacturing in Fargo, where he served as union steward for twelve years, which he truly enjoyed. After he retired, he worked part-time for Clay county for eight years. Ray was a lifetime member of Teamsters Local 116 and Moorhead VFW, where he also did custodial work.

Ray was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. But his greatest joy came when he was surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

Ray is survived by his loving wife; two sons, Royal (Mary), and Rick (fiancée, Cora Fischer), both Moorhead, MN; one daughter, Cathy (Bobby) Martin, Dilworth; grandchildren, Justin and Devin Erickson, Matt and Kari Erickson, and Katie Martin; step grandchildren, Shannon, Rochelle and Jeff; step great-grandchild, Crystal; and many nieces and nephews. Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law; a son, David; and a granddaughter, Heidi.

Helen S. Edmunds

Helen Senora Peterson was born December 4, 1921, to Henry and Sophie (Benesh) Peterson, in rural Ada, MN, in Norman County. At an early age, the family moved to Hendrum, MN. Helen attended Norman County Viking School. In her 20’s, Helen worked in Dayton, OH and Gulfport, MS.

Helen was united in marriage to Lester Edmunds of Hendrum, on April 20, 1944, at Concordia Lutheran Church in rural Hendrum. They spent a few months in Mississippi where he was stationed in the Navy. After his military service, they returned to farm near Hendrum until 1978. In 1982, they moved into Hendrum and enjoyed fifteen years there until they moved to Moorhead, MN, in 1997. For twenty years they enjoyed winters in Arizona. Lester preceded Helen in death on November 13, 2003. Helen died Thursday, March 4, 2004, in Halstad Lutheran Memorial Home, Halstad, MN, at eighty-two years of age.

Helen was very active in the Concordia church. She taught Sunday school, held many offices, and was active in many of the church groups, particularly the Ladies Aide. Lester and Helen sang at many church functions and county events in Norman County. Helen was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hendrum.

Helen is lovingly survived by her four children, Nancy Ward and her husband, Ray, St. Vincent, MN, Jorgene Alsager and her husband Darryl, Walcott, ND, Pam Grove and her husband, Kit, Detroit Lakes, MN, and Joan Borgen and her husband Craig, Fargo; four grandchildren, Joshua and Carly Alsager, and Bethany and Adam Borgen; five brothers, Edgar (Leona), Hibbing, MN, Gerald (Marie), Colorado Springs, CO, Robert (Sandra), Lodi, CA, Larry (Marilyn), Hardin, MT, and Lyle (Alice), Hendrum; and one sister, Arlene (Allan) Ingberg, Perley, MN.

In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Marjorie, and one brother, James.

Visitation for Helen will be Monday, March 8, 2004, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 6:30 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Her funeral will be Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at 2 PM, in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hendrum. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Hendrum.

Richard Dokken

Richard Mark Dokken was born on March 12, 1951, to Willis and Catherine (Olson) Dokken in St. Paul, Minnesota. Richard was raised in Moorhead MN. He graduated from Moorhead High School in 1969. He graduated from Moorhead State University with a degree in art and went on to study print making at The Pratt Institute in New York City, NY. He placed third in the high jump at the Minnesota State Track Meet in 1969. He placed second in the triple jump competition at the conference meet while at Moorhead State University.

Richard was an avid rock climber who pioneered difficult climbing routes at Blue Mounds State Park, MN, in the mid-seventies. He also enjoyed climbing in the Black Hills of South Dakota and at Devil’s Tower, Wyoming. Richard was employed by Montgomery Ward and St. Lukes Hospital, Fargo, ND. Richard died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Ah-Gwah-Ching State Health Care Center, Ah-Gwah-Ching, MN, at fifty-three years of age.

Richard became seriously ill in 1980. His family is grateful to those who have cared for him over the years at Bethany Homes, Meritcare Hospital and the Stadter Center in Grand Forks, ND. In particular, Richard’s family is grateful for the staff who nursed Richard over the last weeks at Ah-Gwah-Ching.

. A special thank you for the many years of care given to Richard at The Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center, Fergus Falls, MN. In this time of budget cuts that effect the most needy members of our society and the people who care for them, the staff at these Minnesota facilities have been unfailingly kind, respectful, and professional. Minnesota should be proud of these state employees who give such dedicated service to those most in need in our state.

Richard was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his mother, Catherine, Moorhead; his two brothers, Dr. Douglas Dokken, St Paul, MN, and Craig Dokken, Moorhead; his sister, Julie Dokken, Fargo. He is also survived by aunts and uncles, including Helen Regedal, Fargo, and numerous cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. (www.trinitymhd.com)

Christi DesSaint

Christi Lynn DesSaint, age 41, of Moorhead, MN, died Tuesday March 30, 2004 in her home under Hospice care following a two year battle with cancer.

Christi Lynn Smith was born July 10, 1962 in Hartford Connecticut, the daughter of Bob and Kay Smith. Her family also lived in Rockford, IL and Scottsdale, AZ before moving to Fargo, ND, when Christi was in the ninth grade. Christi graduated from Fargo North High School and Moorhead State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Therapy.

During high school and college Christi worked for Hornbachers. In May of 1986, Christi joined Moorhead Health Care Center as an Activities Assistant. Christi was also a long-time member of the F-M Piano Teachers Association and taught many students in the area. Christi had a life-long love of music. She began singing at the age of two and began composing music for the piano in the second grade. She received many awards throughout her life for her musical compositions and often composed music for weddings and other special occasions.

Christi and her husband Dan DesSaint were married on August 10, 1990 and they made their home in Moorhead. Christi was an energetic, positive, giving person with a great sense of humor. She loved her husband and children deeply and they were always her first concern. She often said that they were the reason she fought so hard in her battle against cancer.

Christi is survived by her husband Dan DesSaint and their children Carly (8) and Jordan (5), Moorhead; parents Bob and Kay Smith, West Fargo, ND; two brothers Tim Smith, Taiwan, and Dan Smith and his children Stephanie (8) and Brian (5), Apple Valley, MN; sister Cheri Alexander and her children Kyle (9) and Jessica (7), West Fargo, ND; and grandparents Glenn and Doris Smith, Fargo, and Eleanor Ekblad, Rochester, MN.

Visitation: Thursday, 6 PM to 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Funeral: Friday, April 2, 2004, at 2 PM, Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead.

Burial: Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Moorhead.

Ernest Dahl

Ernest H. Dahl, age 78, of rural Felton, MN, died on Thursday, January 8, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital, South University, in Fargo, ND.

Ernest Harold Dahl, the son of Job and Ragna (Nelson) Dahl, was born in Fargo, ND, on May 5, 1925. He grew up and received his education in the rural Felton, MN, area. He graduated from Moorhead (MN) High School in 1943.

Ernest served in the US Army Air Corps, from 1943 to 1945. After his discharge he attended North Dakota Agricultural College (now known at North Dakota State University) in Fargo.

On August 3, 1948, Ernest was united in marriage to Marlys Pake at Estes Park, Colorado. They made their home in rural Felton. From 1951 to 1952, Ernest served his country a second time by serving in the US Air Force.

After his discharge, he returned to the family farm, where Ernest and Marlys farmed until they retired in 1979. After retirement, they continued to live on the farm. Ernest was a member of the Morken Township Board for many years. He was a member of the board of Minnesota State Farm Bureau and served as president of the Clay Co. Farm Bureau. He also sang in the FM Ambassador Chorus.

He is survived by his wife, Marlys, rural Felton; two sons, Duane, Lakewood, CO, and Larry (Amber) Dahl, West Fargo, ND; four daughters, Susan (Mike) Burk, Phoenix, AZ, Deborah (Lyle) Zeller, Anchorage, Alaska, Janet Hensrud, Moorhead, and Karen Harmonson, rural Felton; a brother, John (Eva) Dahl, Moorhead; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and a granddaughter, Robin Dahl.

Irene Cook

Irene R. Cook, 90, of Moorhead, Minnesota, died Thursday, May 13, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.

Irene, daughter of Ewald and Dorothea Klug, was born August 28, 1913, in Leaf Valley, MN. She was baptized at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, moving with her parents to Sabin, MN, at the age of six. She was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sabin, in 1927, and graduated from School District No. 28 in 1928. She married Robert D. Cook on April 15, 1936. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before his death in 1998. They farmed in Clay County for 52 years before moving to the Homestead in Village Green in Moorhead. She resided at Eventide Linden Tree Circle in Moorhead the past four years.

Irene was a member at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sabin, active in the Ladies Aid, Circle and Bible Study. She was a 4-H leader, member of the Farm Bureau, and Homemakers Guild. She and her husband received many awards for their community activities including the North Dakota University Agriculture award and Clay County Farmer of the Year award.

Survivors include her eight children and their spouses; Robert James and Beverly Cook of Pullman, WA, Cherryll and Kenneth Hoffman of Sioux City, IA, Jerry and Ione Cook of Fargo, Janith and James Ness of Moorhead, Kathryn and James Miller of Park Rapids, MN, Lowell and Joanne Cook of Fargo, Dwight and Shirley Cook of Mandan, ND, and Doris and Mark Mancell of Fairmont, MN; twenty-three grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren. Irene is also survived by two brothers, Jennings (Olivia) Klug, Minot, ND, and Elton (Lois) Klug, Chanhassen, MN; two sisters, Ruth Thunberg, Alexandria, MN, and Delda Ash, Boise, ID; three sisters-in-law, Alma and Margie Klug, Fargo, and Delores Klug, Moorhead; and one brother-in-law, Robert Patzman, Bloomington, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a grandson, Troy Cook; four brothers, Clarence, Hubert, Waldo, and Ben Vern; two sisters, Leona Overby and Florence Patzman; and three brothers-in-law, Arther Overby, John Ash, and Ray Thunberg.

Visitation: Tuesday, 4 PM to 7 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Prayer service: Tuesday at 7 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Funeral: Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at 2 PM, Trinity Lutheran Church, Sabin.

Burial: Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Sabin.

Allen Christopherson

Allen “Chris” J. Christopherson, 66, Dilworth, MN, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.

Allen “Chris” Jay Christopherson was born May 23, 1938, to Lester and Grace (Enger) Christopherson in Hendrum, MN, where he grew up and received his education. After graduation, Allen entered the US Navy and served for four years.

On December 22, 1956, he married Harriet Slininger in Ada, MN. They made their home in Hendrum and Allen worked for twenty years as a shop manager for Hendrum Manufacturing. In the 1980’s, they moved to South Twin Lake in Lynwood where they built their own home. Allen owned and operated Chris Crafts where he worked as an independent contractor. He retired in 2001 due to illness and in 2002, they moved to Dilworth.

Allen loved to hunt, especially deer, and to work with his hands. He attended adult day care at the Villa Maria, Fargo, and enjoyed his time there. Allen was an active volunteer and was involved in many organizations. Some of these include the VFW, Legion, Eagles, Elks, Snowmobile Club, the County Variance Board and Watershed Committee.

Allen is survived by his wife, Harriet, Dilworth; two daughters, Peggy (John) Darco, Mahnomen, MN, and Susan (Stewart) Sinclair, Richfield, WI; three grandchildren, Jason (Connie) Darco, Emily (Jeff) Geray, and Ashley Sinclair; two great-grandchildren, McKayla Darco and Ethan Geray; a brother, Richard (Donna) Enger, Lakewood, CO; and two sisters, Rita Moen, Fargo, and Norma (John) Haack, Detroit Lakes, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Donna.

Visitation: Sunday, June 6, 2004, 4 - 7 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN
