Palmer M. Sorenson

Palmer M. Sorenson, 88, Ulen, MN, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, in Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen.

Palmer Mayer Sorenson was born June 27, 1917, in Keene, ND, where he was raised and received his education. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army. On August 13, 1945, Palmer married Kathleen Evans in Abergavenny, England. Upon his discharge in 1945, they returned to Ulen where they farmed. They then moved to Glyndon, MN, where Palmer worked for American Crystal Sugar for thirteen years until his retirement.

Palmer is survived by his wife, Kathleen; four brothers, Walter Sorenson, Clayton (Eleanor) Sorenson, and Raymond (Maryann) Sorenson, all of New Town, ND, and Clifford (Beverly) Sorenson, Fort Atkinson, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: One hour prior to the funeral service at the church

Funeral Service: Saturday, March 4, 2006, at 11:00 AM at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Hawley, MN

Interment: Hawley Cemetery, Hawley

Bonnie Staiger

Bonnie L. Staiger, 60, Moorhead, MN, died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Rocherster, MN, after a brief illness with pulmonary fibrosis.

Bonnie Louise Kielas was born June 24, 1945, in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of Emil and Leone (Alberts) Kielas. She received her education at Holy Angels Catholic School in Minneapolis.

On April 29, 1966, Bonnie was married to David Staiger in Sioux Falls, SD. They have lived in the Fargo-Moorhead area, since 1974. Bonnie was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Fargo, ND, for many years. She served as the church’s financial secretary, treasurer of Miriam Circle, BSF, and many other activities. Bonnie loved traveling and had seen many parts of the world. She was a great fan of Twins Baseball and especially enjoyed her family and helping others in any way possible.

Bonnie is survived by her husband, David, of Moorhead; three sons, Robert and Scott Staiger, both of Fargo, and Troy (Lupita) Staiger, of Tucson, AZ; her mother, Leone Kielas of Yucaipa, CA; two grandsons, Benjamin and Joseph (yet to be born); a sister, Frances (Gene) Curtis of St. Louis Park, MN; two brothers, Richard (Sharon) Kielas of Minneapolis, and Keith Kielas of Yucaipa, CA; and 16 nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her father, Emil, and a brother, Gerald.

Arthur S. Engebretson

Arthur Swift Engebretson was born April 20, 1908, to Knute and Nellie (Sliper) Engebretson, in Ulen, MN, where he was raised and received his education.

Art began working for the railroad in June of 1928 as a building and bridge foreman. He entered the US Army on March 3, 1942, in San Francisco, CA, as a carpenter, and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands for two years where he worked in the mine plant. Art was discharged on October 4, 1945, and he continued his work with the railroad. He was based in Mandan, ND, but made his home on the train as he continued as a “B and B” foreman.

Art married Pauline Stark on February 17, 1956, in Moorhead, MN, and they continued to make their home in Dilworth. Art retired, after forty-five years of service, in 1973 and they moved to their lake home on Toad Lake, near Osage, MN, in 1975. Pauline died on December 25, 1977.

Art spent the winter months in Arizona with his close friend, Ty Eggen. He moved to Moorhead in 1994, when he entered Eventide the Fairmont. In August of 1998, Art entered Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, where he died Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at ninety-seven years of age.

Art is survived by his nieces and nephews, Virginia (Norman) Dufault, and Donna (Tim) Beiseker, both of Crookston, MN, Emily McDowell, and Sandra (Brad) Hemerick, both of Moorhead, Carol (Bernie) Ellsworth, Waskish, MN, Janice (Gary) Olsby, Osage, Kathy Evans, Fergus Falls, MN, Richard (Kristi) Weiss, Fargo, ND, and Herman (Rennae) Weiss, Sabin, MN. In addition to his wife, Art was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.

The funeral for Art will be Monday, July 18, 2005, at 2 PM, in Bottolfson Chapel, Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial will take place in Bethlehem Lutheran (North) Cemetery, Ulen.

Chester F. Eiken

Chester F. Eiken, 94, Moorhead, MN, died in his home, Sunday, February 27, 2005, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Chester Francis Eiken, son of Nickalie and Sophia (Rugland) Eiken, was born December 16, 1910, in Portland, ND, where he grew up and graduated from high school.

Chester was united in marriage to Valerie J. “Bobbie” Puhalla on January 5, 1942, in Moorhead. He served four years in the United States Army from December, 1941, to his discharge at Fort Sam Houston, TX, on December 24, 1946. He served in the 137th Infantry, 35th division, M Company, 3rd Battalion.

In 1947, he and Valerie made their home in Fargo, ND, and in 1951, moved to Moorhead. Chester was employed by Berg Fargo Motor, Fargo, and later worked for 24 years at Northwestern Equipment, Fargo, retiring in June of 1975.

Chester in survived by his wife, Valerie, Moorhead; two sisters, Marilyn (Duane) Fugleberg, Federal Way, WA, and Betty (Howard) Holkesvig, Portland; two sisters-in-law, Beverly Eiken, Kent, WA, and Helen Eiken, Portland; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Kenneth, Vernon, Carmen, Ardise, Arndt and Harland; and one sister, Florence Birkeland.

VISITATION: Wednesday, March 2, 2005, 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM

Norman M. Eide

Norman M. Eide, Omaha, NE, formerly of Moorhead, MN, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, in Omaha, at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Adeline.

Norman was born December 4, 1917, to Nels and Minnie Eide of Hitterdal MN. He attended Hitterdal schools and lived on the family farm. Norman married Adeline Jacobson of Ulen, MN, on December 27, 1941.

Norman enlisted in the U S Army in 1942 and was a staff sergeant in WW-II. He served under George S. Patton in the 707th Tank Battalion, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Norman and Adeline moved to Moorhead in 1947. They originally lived in north Moorhead then moved to south Moorhead where Norman owned and operated the Brookdale Phillips service station for several years. Norman had a long working relationship with John C. (Mike) Barrett, helping to build Barrett Mobile Home Transport in Fargo, from which Norman retired in 1993, at the age of 75.

In addition to his wife, Adeline, Norman is survived by two sons and one daughter; David (Cathy) Eide, Brainerd, MN, Kevin (Kari) Eide, Moorhead, and Laurie Eide (John Feneck), Omaha; a brother, Burton (Esther) Eide, Hitterdal; a sister, Pearl (Richard) Melby, Ulen; three grandchildren, Lisa (Matt) Guthmiller, Omaha, Jackie Eide, Omaha, and Jeffrey Eide, Georgetown, MN; five stepgrandchildren, Matthew Ketterling, Boston, MA, Benjamin Ketterling, St. Cloud, MN, and Ashley, Atalie, and Alaric Roerick, all Moorhead; and a great-grandson, Matthew Guthmiller, Jr Norman was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by family and friends alike. He was known for his sense of humor, his kindness and generosity and his love of golf. Norman traveled extensively during his working years and developed friends wherever he went.

Visitation: Thursday, 5 PM to 8 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Funeral: Friday, March 4, 2005, at 10 AM Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead.

Burial: East Salem Lutheran Cemtery, Hitterdal

Virginia M. Dohm

Virginia M. Dohm, 76, Moorhead, MN, died Sunday, February 27, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.

Virginia Marcella Dohm was born April 13, 1928, in Benson, MN, where she was raised and attended school. Virginia was united in marriage to John Dohm, in Minneapolis, MN, and they made their home in Moorhead.

Virginia worked in the business office of the food service department of Minnesota State University, Moorhead, for thirty-three years.

Virginia is survived by her husband, John, Moorhead; two sons, John III (Marie) Dohm, Moorhead, and David (Michelle) Dohm, Thurmont, MD; five grandchildren, Julie, Jana, Jessica, Matthew and Benjamin; and one great-grandson, Parker.

The memorial service for Virginia will be Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at 11 AM, in River Valley Church, Moorhead.

Marlene H. Deist

Marlene Harriet Fronning was born on August 8, 1945, to Harriet and Leon Fronning in Elbow Lake, MN. She was baptized and confirmed at Aastad Lutheran Church, rural Fergus Falls, MN. She graduated from Elbow Lake High School, continued on with her education for two years at Fergus Falls Jr. College, and received her B.A. degree in elementary education including deaf education from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD, in 1967. She received her Master of Arts degree in 1996 from St. Thomas University.

Marlene began her teaching career in 1967 at the Jacksonville State School for the Deaf, Jacksonville, IL. She was married on June 8, 1969, at Aastad Lutheran Church to Wayne Deist who she met at Augustana College. They then moved to Phoenix, AZ, where she taught at the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf for 1 1/2 years. Marlene and Wayne then settled in Moorhead, MN, where she taught for 28 years. She served at Riverside Elementary, Sabin Elementary, Probstfield, Lincoln, Washington, Edison, Robert Asp, North Jr. High, South Jr. High and Moorhead Senior High School. She took an early retirement from the Moorhead School District upon diagnosis of stage IV ovarian cancer in the fall of 2004.

Her battle with cancer started with a surgery at Mayo Clinic in September 2004. She valiantly and without complaint battled her disease, enduring two rounds of chemotherapy under the caring direction of Dr. Snow, the staff at the Roger Maris Cancer Center, and Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Marlene died peacefully in the presence of her husband and son, Benjamin, and his wife, Nancy, in the privacy of her home on Tuesday, September 20, 2005. She is survived by her husband, Wayne; daughter, Sara (Gideon) Stanley, Houston, TX; son, Benjamin (Nancy), Battle Lake, MN; brother, Gayland (Harriet), Dalton, MN; niece, Diane (Terry) Kruger, Hampton, VA; nephews, Dan Fronning, Dalton, MN, and Dennis (Melissa) Fronning, Battle Lake, MN; and mother-in-law, Marietta Finke, Windom, MN. Her parents and her infant sister, Carol Joy, preceded her in death.

Marlene’s gift to society was her passion for teaching. She was inspired to teach even as a child. She took great pleasure in reading and helping her students with their studies. Reading the Bible was important to her. Her favorite reading was in the book of Romans. Marlene could be summed up as a servant and an encourager as depicted in Romans 12, v.7-8. She did all things cheerfully and was remembered by students as one whose laughter and smile was infectious. She viewed people as a gift from God and encouraged them through their challenges.

Her sphere of influence went beyond her own immediate family. Former neighbors have thanked her for being a second mom to their children. Her relatives, friends, and colleagues have commented on her faithfulness of being active in their lives.

Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd has had a special place in her heart and she enjoyed her church circle when she could attend. Memorials can be directed to Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd building fund, Roger Maris Cancer Center or Hospice of the Red River Valley.
