Dorothy Carey

Dorothy Carey, age 86, Moorhead, MN, died early Tuesday, December 13, 2004 at her home in Moorhead, the result of a house fire.

Dorothy Bertha Grettum was born February 12, 1919 in Ulen, MN, the daughter of Henry and Bessie Grettum. She attended several different schools in the area and graduated from Dilworth (MN) High School in 1936.

After graduating from Moorhead State College, Dorothy was a school teacher who taught in schools ranging from a one-room schoolhouse, where she cross country skied to school, to Moorhead High School.

On June 5, 1946, Dorothy married Thomas Patrick Carey in Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. In 1946, they purchased the property where she lived until her death. She taught part-time as a substitute and at Clearview School, until she resumed teaching full time at Riverside Elementary School in Moorhead. Dorothy loved teaching and remembered every student and enjoyed talking about them as they were in school and who they had become as adults. Dorothy was very involved at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Moorhead, and, among other activities, served as the first woman president of the church council. She was active in the church Library Guild and the quilters group. Dorothy was a member of the same Homemakers group for over 50 years. She enjoyed taking care of her yard, gardening, and walking her dog.

Dorothy is survived by a daughter, Sandra Ann (John) Sutter, Lake Park, MN; a son, Kevin Patrick Carey, Boston, MA; a grandson, Sean Patrick Sutter, Anoka, MN; two sisters, Hildur (Doug) Coen, Detroit Lakes, MN, and Phyllis (Homer) Bryant, Richmond, VA; nephews, Paul (Jane) Coen, Syracuse, NE, Peter (Karla) Coen-Tuft, Grand Forks, ND, Philip (Cara) Coen-Pesch, St. Louis Park, MN, John (Paula) Grettum, Fargo, ND, and James (Carol) Grettum, Fargo; and nieces, Lesley (Scott) Helsrich, Texas, and Susan (Randy) Cook, Midlothian, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, who died in 1976; her parents; and a brother, Henry W. Grettum.

Visitation: Monday, 4 PM until 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN

Funeral service: Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, at 1:30 PM, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN

Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Moorhead.

Lillian M. Canning

Lillian Margaret Sonsalla Canning, 86, of Mesa, AZ, passed away October 26, 2005. She was born on January 2, 1919, to Thomas and Elizabeth Killian Sonsalla. She is survived by her children Elizabeth Payson (Douglas), Sara Canning, Richard Canning, Jr. of Seattle, WA, and Charles Canning (Christine) of Gilbert, AZ. Her five grandchildren are Tom Canning and Jeff Canning (Julianne) of Fargo, ND, Alisa Bokulich (Peter) of Boston, MA, Benjamin Canning (Chelie) of St. Cloud, MN, and Andrea Worley (Jonathan) of Phoenix, AZ. Her great-grandchildren are Olivia Canning of St. Cloud, MN, and Julian Bokulich of Boston, MA. She is also survived by her brother, Roy Sonsalla (Rose) of St. Louis Park, MN.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Richard Gordon Canning, Sr.; their eldest son, James Harry Canning; and her siblings Claire Kieffer, Evelyn Buehrle, Edward Sonsalla, and Irene Jensen. She will be interred next to her husband and other family members at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Hendrum, MN.

Together, Lillian and Dick operated a diversified small-grains and sugarbeet farm west of Hendrum in the Red River Valley of Minnesota. In addition to being a loving wife and attentive mother, she was a loyal friend to many. She was proud of having children in the Hendrum public school system for 30 years. Lillian was an avid reader who imparted the value of education to her family. She was involved in community organizations such as 4-H, Boy Scouts, Hendrum High School Band Mothers, USO, and county/state Republican politics. Lillian was a prolific gardener and an accomplished chef.

During the era in which Dick was one of the founding members of the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Grower's Association, The Red River Valley Farmers Association recognized Lillian and Dick as couple of the year. In 1964, Lillian was a Minnesota delegate to the national Republican Party convention where she met Mrs. Ronald Reagan and Mrs. Richard Nixon.

For 32 years, she graciously entertained guests at the family lake cabin at Big Floyd Lake near Detroit Lakes, MN. Lillian and Dick were adventuresome travelers on the early passenger flights on the Boeing 707, the supersonic Concorde, and the first trans-polar Boeing 747 commercial flight to London. They traveled throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Lillian and Dick retired to Green Valley, AZ, in 1975 where she lived for 27 years. Lillian was a skilled member of the Hillsboro, ND, bowling team, a brilliant player of Scrabble, and a formidable backgammon opponent. She had a love of nature and always paused to admire the beauty of a sunset or enjoy the fury of a thunderstorm, which she captured as a talented amateur photographer.

A Mass in her memory will be said on Friday, November 11, 2005, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Green Valley, AZ.

Remembrances may be sent to the Salvation Army or to the American Cancer Society.

James E. Cain

James E. Cain, 63, Moorhead, MN, died Sunday, March 13, 2005, in MeritCare Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, ND.

James Edward Cain was born October 12, 1941, in San Mateo, CA, to Joseph and Lucille (Schmidt) Cain. The family lived in New Auburn, MN, for a time, but moved to the Fargo-Moorhead area when James was young.

James graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1958 and began a career as a truck driver. He worked for a number of businesses, but spent most of his career with Mitchell Transport and Asplin Excavating, both of Fargo. He was hurt on the job in 1990 and retired the following year.

James married Gail Marie Carney on January 27, 1968, in Moorhead. She died October 26, 2004.

James is survived by his two sons, Brian (Brenda), Fargo, and Scott, Moorhead; and one grandson, Bryce Thomas. In addition to his parents and wife, James was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas.

Visitation: Wednesday, March 16, 2005; 5 - 7 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Funeral: Thursday, March 17, 2005; 2 PM in First Presbyterian Church, Fargo.

Burial: St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead.

Darryl K. Brown

Darryl K. Brown, 57, Dilworth, MN, died Monday, November 21, 2005, at St. Michael’s Hospital, Sauk Centre, MN.

Darryl Keith Brown was born October 17, 1948, in Fargo, ND, to James and Mary Ellen (Holmquist) Brown. Darryl was raised in the Pelican Rapids, MN, and Erhard, MN, areas. He graduated from high school in Pelican Rapids.

Darryl married Patty Ann Bennett and they made their home in Hawley, MN. They moved to Dilworth where he worked for the police department from 1969 to 1972. Darryl worked for the Clay county sheriff’s department from 1972 to 1993.

In the fall of 1994, Darryl started his own trucking business, Darryl K. Brown Trucking. He also served in the Minnesota National Guard for twenty-six years. Patty died in 1997.

Darryl is survived by his son, Keith (fiancée, Trish Gregor), Dilworth; two daughters, DeAnn (Brent) Whitwer, Exeter, NE, and Ashley Ann Brown, Barnesville, MN; two grandchildren, Austin and Aubrie; one brother, Warren (Juneal), Moorhead; and his close friend and companion, Nancy Livingood, Audubon, MN.

Visitation: Sunday, November 27, 2005, from 5 - 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Prayer Service: Sunday, November 27, 2005, at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Funeral: Monday, November 28, 2005, at 1 PM, in Dilworth Lutheran Church, Dilworth.

Interment: Riverside Cemetery, Moorhead.

Sean A. Brooke

Sean Anthony Brooke, 21, Moorhead, MN, died Sun., July 3rd 2005, as a result of a motor vehicle accident on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii.

Sean was born on September 14th 1983 in Heidelberg, Germany, to Darren and Lauri (Emerson) Brooke. Sean enjoyed participating in sports, skin diving, the beach and being in the company of family and friends. He graduated from Ridgeview High School in Columbia, SC in 2001, and enlisted in the Army in May 2002.

He attended basic training at FT. Jackson, SC, and Advanced Individual Training at FT. Sam Houston, TX. There he became a combat medic and was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division in Oahu, Hawaii. In January 2004 Sean began a 14-month tour of duty in Iraq where he treated both fellow soldiers and the Iraqi people.

Sean is survived by his mother and father, Lauri and Darren Brooke; a sister Christine, and a brother, Parker, all of Detroit Lakes, MN. Sean is also survived by his grandparents, Lloyd and Louise Emerson of Moorhead, and Roger and Ruth Brooke of West End, NC. Sean has many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and surviving friends that will miss him and love him very, very much.

Visitation for Sean will be Wednesday, July 13, 2005, from 7 - 9 PM, in St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Moorhead. A Memorial Mass will be at the church Thursday, July 14, 2005, at 11 AM

Virginia J. Brainerd

Virginia June Brainerd was born September 10, 1932, to George and Mary (Wambach) Dalen, in Georgetown, MN. She attended school in Perley, MN. Virginia worked various jobs until her retirement from NDSU Food Service.

Virginia was united in marriage to William “Bill” Brainerd, November 30, 1950, in Moorhead, where they made their home until moving to their home in Fargo, ND.

Virginia loved to spend her free time with family and friends at their lake property on Trowbridge Lake, near Vergas, MN. She always loved it when she would get together with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for special occasions and holidays. She could never pass up the chance to “shake a leg” whenever possible.

With her family by her side, Virginia died Thursday, April 21, 2005, in MeritCare Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, at seventy-two years of age.

Virginia is lovingly survived by her five children, Jackie (Fred) Fritel, Valley City, ND, Dale (Nancy), Doug (Tami), Dan (Cindi), and Mary (Dave) Chapman, all Fargo; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; six sisters, Elsie Jacobson, Fargo, Georgia (Merle) Taylor, Jean Boothroyd, Rose (Nelmer) Eberhardt, and Evelyn (Vernon) Kroshus, all Moorhead, and Violet Stein, Pelican Rapids, MN; two brothers, George Dalen, Moorhead, and General (Gail) Dalen, Kansas City, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-four years, Bill; and her beloved daughter, Julie, who was so very special to her. She was her precious little angel on earth who now welcomes her “home” forever. Virginia was also preceded in death by her sister, Irene Nickerson; her brothers-in-law, Jake Stein and Howard Boothroyd; and a sister-in-law, Mickie Dalen.

Visitation for Virginia will be Sunday, April 24, 2005, from 5 - 8 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Her funeral will be Monday, April 25, 2005, at 1 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.

Maggie Bossart

Maggie Bossart, 91, Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, Minnesota, died Wednesday, December 21, 2005, at Eventide.

Maggie Bossart was born May 20, 1914, in Danzig, ND, to Jakob and Marie (Neuhardt) Klein. She was raised in the Ashley, ND, area where she received her education.

Maggie was married to Fred Martin Bossart, in April of 1938, in Fargo, ND, where they made their home. Fred died on July 6, 1988. She entered Eventide Lutheran Home in April of 1994.

Maggie was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Moorhead. She was a very artistic person and enjoyed sewing, knitting and crafts. Maggie was a very caring and compassionate person. She served her family in a very giving and selfless manner.

Maggie is survived by her daughter, Peggy (Rodney) Wambolt, Moorhead; her son, Douglas (Rowene) Bossart, Leawood, KS; three grandchildren, Tracy (John) Dignam, Todd Bossart, and Jay Wambolt; and one brother, Eddie (Viola) Klein, West Fargo, ND.

In addition to her parents and husband, Maggie was preceded in death by three brothers, Jake, John, and Gotlieb; and three sisters, Mary, Martha, and Emma.

Visitation: one hour before the funeral.

Funeral: Tuesday, December 27, 2005; 2 PM in Bottolfson Chapel, Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead.

Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Moorhead.
