Lorene A. Grottodden

Lorene A. Grottodden, 96, Moorhead, MN, died Friday, April 29, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.

Lorene Anne Smith was born November 1, 1908, in Overly, ND, the daughter of J.O. and Mayme Smith. She grew up and graduated from high school in Harvey, ND. After high school, Lorene attended Interstate Business College in Fargo. She then moved to Bismarck, ND, where she worked for the state of North Dakota. It was there that she met her husband, Ole, and they were married in South Dakota. In 1939, they settled in Fargo and in 1950, they made their home in Moorhead. Lorene assisted her husband in operating Lake Agassiz Nursery.

Ole died on December 2, 2002, and Lorene became a resident at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, in 2003.

Lorene is survived by a son, Peter (Janet) Grottodden, St. Paul, MN; a daughter, Mary Ann Grottodden, Chatanooga, TN; three grandchildren, and six greatgrandchildren.

Funeral Service: Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at 2:30 PM at Bottolfson Chapel at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead

Interment: Moorhead Memorial Gardens, Moorhead

Roger W. Greeley

Roger W. Greeley, age 56, Moorhead, MN died December 22, 2005, at his home in Moorhead, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, after a difficult battle with cancer.

Roger W. Greeley was born July 2, 1949, in Omaha, NE, to Warren and Elaine Greeley. He and his brother, Mark, attended school there until in his teen years, his family moved to Walker, MN.

In 1966, Roger enlisted in the United States Army. Over a ten year period, Roger served in Korea, Germany and many stateside ports.

Roger married Debra Wenzel on December 23, 1970, in Walker. They made their home in Fargo, ND, in 1978, where they owned and operated The Nut House Group Home Daycare. After 16 years and many children later, Roger’s love of warm weather and Disney World lead him to move his family to Orlando, FL, in 1994. There he worked for Osceola County as equipment and facility supervisor of the solid waste department.

After being diagnosed with cancer, Roger and Debra moved back to the area to spend his final months with family.

Roger is survived by his wife, Debra; two sons, Timothy (Yuna) and Terry; a daughter, Tamara; a brother, Mark; and his pride and joys, granddaughters, Corinthea and Coralinda.

Roger believed the Lord sent us here to help one another and he lived that belief everyday of his life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held in Nevis, MN at a later date.

Tim Gilbertson

Tim Gilbertson, 45, Hawley, MN died Tuesday, November 15, 2005, in MeritCare Medical Center, Fargo, ND.

Tim Gilbertson was born April 24, 1960, in Moorhead, Minnesota. He attended Dilworth Elementary and High School. He graduated from Detroit Lakes Vocational Technical College. He lived in Lake Park, Minnesota for many years. Tim was by trade a carpenter and small engine repairman.

He is survived by his mother, Joyce Gilbertson; his father and stepmother, A. Duane and Dianne Gilbertson; one brother, Jeffrey Gilbertson (Dawn); two sisters, Joddie Gilbertson and Tricia Gibbons (David); and significant other, Barb Holen.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2005, at 11:00 A.M. at Dilworth Lutheran Church (3rd Street North East Dilworth, MN).

L. Lucille Garness

Lillian Lucille Garness was born November 18, 1920, to John and Alma (Sand) Helland, near Hendrum, MN, where she was raised. Lucille graduated from Hendrum High School in 1938, and then attended Interstate Business College in Fargo, ND.

Lucille worked in the Norman County Extension office in Ada, MN, for four years, and then moved to Seattle, WA, where she worked for the City of Seattle Light Department for one and a half years.

Lucille was united in marriage to Adron G. Garness, of Ada, on June 10, 1945, in Hendrum, and they lived for several months in Huntington Beach, CA, and Santa Ana, CA, where she worked for Public Steno Shop. They moved to Ada in 1946 where they lived until moving to Halstad, MN, in 1958. Lucille worked for Red River Valley Co-Op Power, Halstad, for almost twenty-five years.

Adron died in 1984, and Lucille continued to make her home in Halstad until she moved to Moorhead, MN, in 1989. With her daughters by her side, Lucille died Thursday, March 10, 2005, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, in MeritCare Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, at eighty-four years of age.

Lucille was a long-time and active member of Halstad Lutheran Church, the Halstad American Legion Auxiliary Unit 402 and the Ada VFW Auxiliary No. 7557.

Lucille is lovingly survived by her three daughters, Janice (David) Kragness, Warroad, MN, Mary Lou Vogt (special friend, Paige Will), Minneapolis, MN, and Susan (Raymond) Kunz, Frazee, MN; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Francis Gaare, Tucson, AZ; and one brother, Donald (Eva Mae) Helland, Dilworth, MN. In addition to her parents and husband, Lucille was preceded in death by three sisters, Bernice Coleman, Irene Hovland and Margaret Helgoe.

Visitation for Lucille will be Sunday, March 13, 2005, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Her funeral will be Monday, March 14, 2005, at 11 AM, in Halstad Lutheran Church, Halstad. Burial will follow in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Hendrum, MN. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or the Halstad Lutheran Church.

Elanor Helen Fougner

Helen Fougner of Moorhead, MN, died peacefully in her home on Friday, April 15, 2005.

Helen was born in Ralphton, PA, to Mary and Luka “Luke” Cerka. When Helen was a child the family moved to New York City, NY, where she graduated from high school.

Following graduation, and for the war effort, Helen moved to Baltimore, MD, where she met Gaylord Fougner, the love of her life. Gaylord was an officer in the Navy and his ship was stationed in Baltimore. They exchanged telegrams, while the ship was at sea, to arrange dates when the ship was in port. The romance continued for three years and on April 6, 1946, they married. One year later the newlyweds relocated to Fargo, ND, since Gaylord grew up in North Dakota and appreciated the Midwest.

Helen was a devoted wife and mother to her only child, Mark, who she called her “miracle baby” since she was told she could never have children. The couple lived in Moorhead until Gaylord’s retirement in 1983. They then moved to their dream home on Star Lake, Dent, MN. Gaylord passed away June 30, 1987.

Helen enjoyed traveling, sewing, going to casinos, and spending quality time with her son and grandchildren. Helen was known for her feisty, spirited personality and was loved by all who knew her.

She is survived by a son, Mark G. of Eden Prairie, MN; and two grandchildren, Jamie M. of San Francisco, CA, and Krista J. of Bonita Springs, FL; a sister, Mary Brucella of Middle Village, NY; and twelve nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Kay; and brothers, Peter and Mike.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead

Funeral Service: Thursday, April 21, 2005 at 1 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel

Burial: Moorhead Memorial Gardens, Moorhead

Catherine Fossay

Catherine Eleanor Edlund, the eldest of nine children of Syvert and Margaret Edlund, was born July 18, 1904, in Fergus Falls, MN, where she grew up and received her education. Catherine graduated from Moorhead (MN) State Teachers College in 1924. As a young lady, Catherine taught school at Oak Mound School, north of Moorhead.

On June 15, 1927, Kay was married to Obert Fossay, at Fergus Falls and they made their home in the Oak Mound area. She served as organist at Oak Mound Congregational Church for twenty-four years. Catherine and Obert later moved into Moorhead.

After her husband, Obert, died on May 6, 1956, Kay joined the staff of Riverside School in Moorhead, where she taught until she retired in the late 1960s. She was active in First Congregational Church in Moorhead, where she was a longtime choir member. She was also a fifty-year member of Eastern Star and a member of the Altrusa Club.

Catherine enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, doing crossword puzzles and summers on Floyd Lake.

In 1997, Kay moved to live with her daughter in Bemidji, MN. She later moved with them to Red Wing, MN, where she died on Friday, April 1, 2005, in a nursing home, at the age of 100. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Carolynn Jean Thompson and Mary Ann Fretland; two great-grandsons; two sisters and five brothers.

Catherine is survived by two daughters, Sally (Darrell) Reber, Kent, WA, and Elizabeth (Marv) Skaar, Red Wing; a sister, Marguerite (Ezra) Liechty, Jamestown, ND; fifteen grandchildren; and twenty-four great-grandchildren.

Visitation: One hour prior to the funeral, in the church.

Funeral service: Thursday, April 7, 2005, at 1 PM, First Congregational-United Church of Christ, Moorhead, Minnesota

Burial: Oak Mound Cemetery, rural Moorhead.

Felipa Flores

Felipa Balderas was born April 30, 1935, in Mexico, to Pablo and Maria Luisa (Navejas) Balderas. She grew up in Moorhead, MN.

On October 23, 1954, Felipa married Jose Flores in Moorhead and they made their home in the Felton, MN, and Georgetown, MN areas. In 1977, they moved to Moorhead. On May 15, 1998, Jose died, and Felipa continued to make her home in Moorhead.

Felipa was a loving mother to their five children. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading and going to the casino. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Felipa died on Monday, August 1, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND, at the age of seventy.

She is survived by a son, Paul (Rebecca) Flores, Moorhead; four daughters, Linda (Tony) Hernandez, Moorhead, Mary (Louie) Bertrand, Georgetown, MN, Berta (Dale) Sather and Alice (Alex) Rendon, both of Moorhead; twenty grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 9 brothers and sisters, Antonia (Refujo) Sanchez, Pablo (Francis) Balderas, Jose (Concepcion) Balderas, Johnny (Rene) Balderas, Maria (Augustine) DeLa Rosa, Crescencia (Jose) Martinez, and Carmen (Jorge) Alcazar, all of Walla Walla, WA, Jesus (Concha) Balderas, Bowie, TX, and Fransisco Balderas, San Angelo, TX.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Vicenta Garcia; and a brother, Luis Balderas.

Visitation: Thursday from 5 - 8 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Moorhead

Funeral Mass: Friday, August 5, 2005, at 11 AM, St. Francis de Sales

Burial: St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead
