Marian Tchouban
Marian E. Tchouban died Thursday, November 24, 2005, in the Moorhead Healthcare Center at 84 years of age.
Marian Elvera Wegner was born August 28, 1921, in Moorhead to Otto and Bessie (Rensvold) Wegner. She grew up in Moorhead and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1939. Marian worked at Newberry’s Department Store from 1940 to 1944. In 1944, she entered the Cadet Nurse Program and graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1947, fulfilling her life long dream of becoming a Registered Nurse.
Marian was united in marriage to George Tchouban on October 23, 1948, in Moorhead where they made their home for the next 56 years. Marian perfected the role of wife, mother, and homemaker. She returned to the nursing field in 1967 and worked as a recovery room nurse at St. Ansgar’s Hospital, Moorhead until her retirement in 1981. Her husband George died on February 12, 2005.
Marian was a natural caregiver and used her gift to touch the lives of all around her. Throughout her life, she was actively involved with various local and world missions. She will be remembered for her generous heart and caring spirit.
Marian is survived by her children; a son, George (Lynn), Denver, CO; a daughter, RuthAnne (Bill) Huston, Sierra Vista, AZ; a brother, Bob (Alice Mae) Wegner, Moorhead; a sister, Betty (Spencer) Smith, Brookline Station, MO; five grandsons; two great-grandchildren; two nieces and five nephews.
In addition to her husband, George, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Orrin.

George E. Tchouban
George E. Tchouban, 89, Moorhead, MN, died Saturday, February 12, 2005, in Moorhead HealthCare Center, Moorhead, with his loving wife by his side.
George Edward Tchouban was born September 16, 1915, in Janesville, WI. He was adopted as an infant by Chris and Bessie Tchouban and was raised in the Park Rapids, MN, and Nevis, MN, areas. George farmed in that area until he enlisted in the US Army on October of 1940. He was stationed in Nova Scotia during WW II and was discharged in Sept of 1945.
George was united in marriage to Marian Wegner on October 23, 1948, in Moorhead, where they made their home. They resided in that same home for fifty-six years. George worked for the Great Northern Rail Road and later the Burlington Northern Railway for thirty-three years. He retired in 1978 but began work as a custodian, the following day, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Moorhead. He worked there for over twenty years.
George loved to garden and he shared his abundant produce with his many “customers”. He planted his fifty-fifth garden in June of 2004. George will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit, his dry sense of humor, and the mischievous “sparkle” in his blue eyes.
George is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Marian, Moorhead; a son, George Jr. (Lynn), Denver, CO; a daughter, RuthAnne (Bill) Huston, Sierra Vista, AZ; five grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

Mack "Chief" Thomas
“Chief” passed, after a 5 1/2 year hard fought battle with kidney cancer, on August 17th at home with his loving family at the age of 67. He was born April 8th 1938, the first born child to Johnson Bailey and Lillian Freeman Thomas and a descendent of the last Indian Warrior, Chief Chitto (Crazy Snake) Harjo and Lt. Col. Earnest Childres, the recipient of The Congressional Medal of Honor from WWII.
Mack began at the age of 6 to play the pedal steel guitar. His family known as, The Thomas Indian Family, traveled together playing beautiful music on tour and they produced three albums. They performed on the Ed Sullivan Show, at the Seattle World Fair the New York World Fair, Carnage Hall and the Grand Ole Opre. He did a lot of studio work; by himself, with his brother Riley and several musical groups. He wrote and recorded many songs. A warrior until the end of his trail, Chief touched the souls of many playing Inspirational Music with his steel guitar. He was the first Native American to be inducted into the Dakota Music Hall of Fame in 1993. As an inventor he worked with Simi Mosley and they made the Mosrite guitar. He played background for the Adventurers in the early 1960s. He also taught guitar to Barbara Mandrell when she was a child.
In 1973 he met and married Constance (Connie) Doerr. They bought a bus which became their home for two years as they toured and played with many Gospel groups including: The Statesmen Quartet, the Oak Ridge Boys, The Amigos and The Lundstrom Crusade Team.
Along with music, pipeline work was a big part of his life he operated heavy line equipment such as a sideboom. They moved to Alaska to work on the Trans Alaska Pipeline. He also performed with music groups in between working on the pipeline. After 10 years they moved back to CA for pipeline work and to play music. They eventually returned to Ashley, ND to be near his beloved in-laws, Walter and Viola Doerr. Later Mack, Connie and their son Justin traveled again, this time on pipeline jobs. He finished pipelining on the Alliance line in MN & ND and then making their home in Fargo.
Chief is proceeded in death by his parents and one sibling, Katie. He is survived by his wife, Constance; children, Deborah Andres of Seattle, WA, Kim Brown of Anchorage, AK, Johnson B. Thomas of San Clemente, CA, Shauna Thomas of Santa Ana, CA, Justin Thomas of Vancouver, WA; brothers, Riley Thomas of Merrieto, CA, John Thomas of Anaheim, CA; sisters, Moni Thomas of Riverside, CA, Kogie Thomas of Fullerton, CA, LaVona King of Anaheim, CA and Virginia Thomas of Okmulgee, OK; and aunt Katie Smith of Coweta, OK and uncle Robert Freeman of Okmulgee, OK, along with 7 wonderful grandchildren.

Grace V. Thorson
Grace Virginia Carlson was born September 6, 1918, in Fargo, ND, to John and Annie (Stensgard) Carlson. She grew up on a farm in Park Township and received her education in Detroit Lakes, MN.
On June 6, 1936, Grace married Hinton W. Thorson in Moorhead, MN, and they made their home in Park Township, then Detroit Lakes. They eventually moved to Hawthorne, CA, where she worked as “Rosie the Riveter” for Douglas Aircraft. In 1941, they moved to Dilworth, MN, where Grace lovingly raised their five children.
Grace died on Sunday, August 21, 2005, in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN, at the age of eighty-six.
Grace was a strong and elegant woman. Her faith in the Lord was her strength and she instilled that in her children. Grace was also a talented musician and she played many instruments. She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, baking, and she was always the gracious hostess. Grace was a much-loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. We will miss her friendship and her presence with us and we are celebrating in knowing she is with our Lord and Savior.
Grace is survived by her husband, Hinton, Moorhead; five children, Bev (Leonard) Wagner, Moorhead, Carol (Rick) Larson, Hawley, MN, Wally Jr (Lonnie), Crookston, MN, Jerdeen (Jim) Hampton, Minneapolis, MN, and Pam (Steve) Wear, Dilworth; fourteen grandchildren; one foster grandchild; seventeen great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, and one brother.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Eventide for their loving care of Grace.

Lucille I. Unruh
Lucille I. Unruh, 86, Moorhead, MN, died Friday, February 4, 2005, in Innovis Health, Fargo, ND.
Lucille Irene Bertsch was born January 2, 1919, in Expansion, ND, where she grew up. On September 7, 1936, she married Arthur Unruh in Beulah, ND, and they made their home in Washburn, ND, then Minot, ND. In 1957, they moved to Moorhead.
Lucille worked for twenty-five years at St. Luke’s, Fargo, in food service. After retirement, she worked as a product demonstrator for various businesses in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Lucille enjoyed talking to and meeting new people.
Arthur died on February 24, 1977, and Lucille continued to make her home in Moorhead.
Lucille is survived by a son, Darven (Meryce), Mounds View, MN; three grandchildren, Jodi (Rob) Morris, Maple Grove, MN, Lincoln Unruh, Palm Springs, CA, and Lance (Kim) Unruh, Blaine, MN; and six great-grandchildren, Nick, Navarre, Justin, Amanda, Alexandra, and Rylie. In addition to her husband, Lucille was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Elwood Vesta
Elwood Victor Vesta, the son of Elmer W. and Nettie (Tuestad) Vesta, was born February 2, 1918, in DeKalb County, IL. He grew up and received his education in the DeKalb area.
During World War II, Elwood served his country in the US Army. He served overseas in Europe and was discharged in 1945.
On June 12, 1947, Elwood was united in marriage to Sophie Ryan, in Bismarck, ND. Following their marriage they made their home near DeKalb, where they farmed until retiring in March of 1989.
In 1989, Sophie and Elwood moved to Moorhead. They later lived at Eventide the Fairmont, in Moorhead. While Sophie was a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home, Elwood moved to Eventide Linden Tree. Sophie died on April 30, 2004.
On June 24, 2005, Elwood became a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home, where he died on Sunday, July 31, 2005, at the age of 87. Elwood blessed many people with gifts from his garden and his wonderful baked goods.
Elwood is survived by a daughter, Debbie (Mark) Johnson, Peoria, IL; three sons, Dale (Leanne) Vesta, Sycamore, IL, Dewy (Esther) Vesta, Moorhead, and Darrel Vesta, Dublin, Ohio; six grandchildren, Kristine Tamblyn, Katie and Ryan Vesta, Brent and Brad Vesta, and Sarah Johnson; a brother, Kenneth (Sonja) Vesta, DeKalb; and six sisters, Norma (Clarence) Thorpe, Waterman, IL, Doris Carlson, DeKalb, Luella Lothson, DeKalb, Virginia Mathre, Newark, IL, Lois (James) Johnson, Sycamore, and Ruth Carey, Indianapolis, IN. Elwood was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Vernon, Elmer Jr., and Eugene.
Visitation: Wednesday, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, and one hour before the funeral, at the church.
Funeral service: Thursday, August 4, 2005, at 10:30 AM, Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church, Moorhead, Minnesota.
