Benjamin P. Samuels

Benjamin P. Samuels, 86, Moorhead, MN, died Saturday, July 16, 2005, in the Veterans Home, St. Cloud, MN.

Benjamin Place Samuels was born June 3, 1919, to Norma and Frank Samuels in Oswego, NY, where he also received his education. Ben enlisted in the US Air Force in 1942, and was stationed in Salinas, CA.

On September 29, 1943, he married Theresa Ledeboer in Moorhead. Ben was discharged from the Air Force in 1946, and he joined the Air National Guard in 1947 in Fargo, ND. In 1952, he was called to active duty and he transferred to Moody Air Base, Georgia. While there, Ben re-enlisted in the Air Force.

Ben retired from the Air Force in 1968, and he worked for the Fargo Post Office from 1972 until 1982. After retirement, Ben and Theresa continued to make their home in Moorhead.

Ben enjoyed fishing and watching his grandson play hockey and baseball. He was a member of the Moorhead VFW and of the First Presbyterian Church, Moorhead.

Ben is survived by his wife, Theresa; two sons, Gary, Lake Zurick, IL, and Mark (Peggy), Moorhead; a grandson, Mike, Moorhead; two sisters, Rosalyn King and Lois Syrell, both of Oswego. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Visitation: Tuesday from 5 - 7 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead

Funeral Service: Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at 11 AM, First Presbyterian Church, Moorhead

Burial: Moorhead Memorial Gardens, Moorhead

Delwyn Saarinen

Delwyn G. Saarinen, age 61, died at his home in Dilworth, MN, under the care of his wife, Cheryl, on Sunday, December 11, 2005.

Delwyn George Saarinen was born December 20, 1943, in the Chicago, Illinois area. As a child, he moved with his family to Osage, MN, where he grew up and received his education. Del served his country in the US Navy.

After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Illinois. In 1975, he moved to Felton, MN, in 1981 to Glyndon, MN, and in 1984, to Dilworth, MN. On November 22, 1994, Del married Cheryl Gilchrist. They made their home in Dilworth. For many years, Del has worked as a cement finisher, for FM Asphalt, Camas, and Aggregate Industries.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, Dilworth; a son, Paul Saarinen, Big Sandy, TN; a daughter, Sherri Saarinen, also Big Sandy; three step-sons, Robert (Lynnette) Novak, Phil (Felicia) Novak, and Delroy (Angie) Novak, all Roseau, MN; his mother, Loraine Saarinen, Dent, MN; a sister, Janelle (Tom) Conners, Moorhead, MN; and ten grandchildren.

Visitation: Friday, 5 PM until 7 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN.

Memorial Service: Saturday, December 17, 2005, at 1:30 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN.

William F. Russell, Jr.

William F. Russell, Jr., 77, Moorhead, MN, died Sunday, May 1, 2005, in his home.

William Frank Russell, Jr., son of William Frank Russell, Sr. and Lila Emma (Munson) Russell, was born in Hackensack, MN, on June 4, 1927. He received his education in Backus, MN, where he graduated from high school in 1945.

William entered the United States Navy in June of 1945. He took basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Ilinois. He later served at naval bases in Norman, OK, and Oplacha, FL. He received an honorable discharge in September of 1946. William moved to Fargo, ND, in 1947, and worked for Nash Finch until 1955.

William was united in marriage to Joyce Enervold, on September 11, 1949, in Forman, ND. They made their home in Fargo and then in 1956 moved to their current home in Moorhead. William worked for Glendenning Motorways, Fargo, from 1956 until he retired in 1984.

William loved fishing, woodworking, and especially his family. He also was a longtime and active member of The Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead.

William is survived by his wife, Joyce, Moorhead; one daughter, Peggy (Steve) Reznicek, Hoyt Lakes, MN; three sons, Gary (Sue) Russell, Williamston, NC, Michael (Elaine) Russell, Moorhead, and Dan (Rhonda) Russell, Knoxville, Iowa; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ardith Holtz, Lockport, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Visitation: Wednesday, May 4, 2005 - 4 PM to 7 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Funeral: Thursday, May 5, 2005 - 11 AM in The Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead, MN.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.

Leslie K. Rott

Leslie K. Rott, 77, Moorhead, MN, died Thursday, January 13, 2005, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND, surrounded by his family.

Leslie Kenneth Rott was born in Jamestown, ND, to Kris and Lydia (Eberhardt) Rott, on May 15, 1927. His entire childhood was spent in Jamestown, where he graduated from Jamestown High School in 1945. Leslie served in the US Army from 1945-1947, and was a lifetime member of the Moorhead VFW Club.

On May 28, 1948, Leslie was united in marriage to Gertrude Pearl Cooper of Windsor, ND, in Jamestown. The couple made their home in Jamestown until 1962, when they moved to Moorhead, and have resided in Moorhead ever since.

Leslie was an over-the-road truck driver for Gamble Robinson (Food Services of America), Fargo. The last years of his trucking career were spent with Thompson Brothers Trucking, hauling the US Mail.

Leslie loved to spend his leisure time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren. He loved playing pool with anyone that was willing to try their luck at the pool table. He also enjoyed reading and watching his beloved Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

The last two years, Leslie has resided at Moorhead Healthcare Center.

Leslie is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gertrude; six children, Richard, Minneapolis, MN, Thomas (Pauly), Fargo, Debbie (Gary) Peterson, Moorhead, LuAnn (David) Sharpe, Las Vegas, NV, Pamela (Todd) Palmer, Moorhead, and Jerry, Moorhead; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Eileen Rott, Long Beach, CA; step- mother, Martha Rott, Jamestown; and one stepsister, Krista (Craig) Strawser, Coon Rapids, MN.

Verna E. Robinson

Verna E. Robinson, 86, Fargo, ND, formerly of Moorhead, MN, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 17, 2005, in Bethany Homes, Fargo.

Verna was born March 21, 1918, near Canwood, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Edward and Inga (Schelstad) Thompson. She was the youngest of eight children. Verna attended Moose Valley School in Saskatoon, Sask., until the age of sixteen when she moved to her sister’s (Lydia Jackson) farm near Grafton, ND. She worked for several years at the Rexall store until moving to Fargo where she was employed in the cafeteria of Herbst Department Store.

Verna married Wallace Robinson on May 16, 1943, in Moorhead. Wallace was employed by Greyhound Bus Lines for thirty-nine years. They lived in Minot, ND, Glendive, MT, Minneapolis, MN, and Escanaba, MI, before returning to the Fargo-Moorhead area in 1947.

Wallace retired in 1976, and they enjoyed ten years of retirement together before he died in 1986.

Verna thoroughly enjoyed entertaining others and played the accordion, piano, organ and harmonica - all of which she learned to play by ear. For many years, she volunteered at the Villa Maria and Elim Nursing Homes, to brighten the residents’ days. Verna and Wallace were also active members of the Elks Lodge and Eagles Club, both in Fargo.

Verna lived in the same home in Moorhead for forty-five years before moving to Bethany Homes in June of 2001. She was a loving and devoted wife as well as a mother who will always be cherished.

In addition to her husband, Verna was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Tillie Hawksworth, Helen Bostwick, Lydia Jackson, Edna Jackson, and Louise Thompson; and two brothers, Olaf Svarte and Benjamin Thompson. Verna is survived by a son, Michael (Gayle) Robinson, Maple Grove, MN; a daughter, Mary (Thomas) Gnahn, Fargo; three grandchildren, Emily, Travis and Lindsay; one great-grandchild, Autumn; and a special friend, Linus Kelly.

Visitation: Wednesday, January 19, 2005, 3 –8 PM, with prayer service at 7 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel Moorhead

Funeral Service: Thursday, January 20, 2005 at 11 AM, Gethsemane Cathedral, Fargo

Interment: Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Moorhead

Freddie Poehls

Freddie L. Poehls, age 96, died Friday, April 15, 2005, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead, MN.

Freddie was born November 28, 1908, on his parents’ farm just outside of Sabin, MN. His parents were Henry and Dorothea (Wright) Poehls, both Clay County residents. He graduated from Moorhead High School in 1927.

Freddie married Irene Conway of Leeds, ND, in 1947. Their daughter, Bonnie Haney, was born February 26, 1952.

In 1953, Freddie opened his business, The Bargain Outlet Store, in Fargo. He retired and closed the store in 1988.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Mary (Andy) Thies, Mabel (Charles) Buth, Tracy (Andrew) Edwards, and Lila; and his brother, Eddie (Mildred) Poehls. Freddie is survived by his daughter, Bonnie (Jim) Haney, Moorhead; three grandsons, Zeb (Wendy) Haney, Minneapolis, MN, Gabe Haney, Moorhead, and Greg (Khara) Haney, Fargo; a great-grandson, Seamus, also of Minneapolis; and eight nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Sunday, from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Funeral service: Monday, April 18, 2005, at 2:30 PM in Bottolfson Chapel, Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN.

Burial: Elmwood Cemetery, Sabin, MN
