Leo Mass, 69

Leo Elmer Mass, 69, of Buffalo passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014.

Visitation was scheduled on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at St. Henry Catholic Church, Monticello, with Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday at the church and private interment. Funeral arrangements were with the Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel of Monticello.

Leo was born in Brainerd, Minn. to Otto and Ethel Mass on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, 1945. He attended and graduated in 1964 from Washington High School in Brainerd. After graduation, he worked at a Brainerd dealership for a year until joining the U.S. Army in 1965. He was stationed in Fort Knox, Tenn. and spent most of his army career in Fort Sam Houston, Texas as a medic. Upon discharge from the Army, he worked as a mechanic at a couple of dealerships. He worked for Auto Import in Brainerd eight years. His natural knowledge and love of cars was his career choice, but he also filled his off-work hours as pitman for a racing friend in Brainerd.

Another leisure time love of his was snowmobiling. A snowmobile accident in February 1971 reduced his enthusiasm for snowmobiling but allowed him to meet his wife, Marj, while hospitalized for six weeks with a severely broken leg. Leo and Marj were married on Aug. 7, 1971 in International Falls, Minn. They continued to reside in Brainerd until 1976, when they moved to Fridley, Minn., and Leo went to work for West Side Volkswagen in St. Louis Park, Minn. In 1977, they moved to Hanover, Minn., where they made their home until 1985, and then they moved to Buffalo. Leo worked at West Side until 2007, when he retired. He returned to work part-time as a courtesy driver for Luther West Side VW in 2012 and continued until becoming ill in October of this year.

He was able to resume his racing passion after moving to the Twin Cities area as pitman for another friend/co-worker, and he was able to participate in racing until the end of the 2014 season. He was awarded the Crew Member of the Year Award for the Land O’Lakes District in 2012. His ability to fix anything, his creative solutions to any problem and his passion for helping anyone endeared him to anyone he met.

When their three sons were growing up, Marj and Leo were active in scouting as leaders. Leo enjoyed music and sang with the small groups at church. Leo spent many enjoyable moments camping with family, working on cars, racing, singing at church, and being a helpful friend to anyone who requested his assistance. “Faith, Family, Friends” was truly his motto and priority in life.

He is survived by: his wife of 43 years, Marj; four children, Ben (Michele) of Brainerd, Rebecca (Jason) Ihamaki of Isanti, Minn., Brian (Tammy) of Buffalo, and Brent of New Germany, Minn.; two grandsons, Zach Mass and Eli Ihamaki; step-grandchildren, Dakota and Lilly; sister, Rosella (John) Murray of Brainerd; brother, Robert (Kate) Mass of Midland, Mich.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Otto and Ethel Mass; sisters, Judy Mass and Barb Mass; father- and mother-in-law, Fritz and Vonda Boeckers; nephew, Tom Valentine; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.
