Richard Lyzhoft, 90

Richard Lyzhoft, age 90, of Buffalo died Monday, Jan. 11, 2010 at Regency Hospital in Golden Valley.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Peterson Chapel in Buffalo.

David Checkal, 59

David M. Checkal, age 59 of Delano, died on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 in Serra Vista, Arizona. He was born October 5, 1950 to Ernest and Cecelia (Wanderscheid) Checkal in Litchfield, Minnesota.

David served in the Army being honorably discharged in 1973.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Checkal. David is survived by his mother Cecelia; sisters and spouses Mary and Roger Hendricks, and Janice and David Williams; brothers and spouses John and Paulette Checkal, Joseph Checkal, Steven and Lori Checkal, and Charlie and Betty Checkal; 14 nieces and nephews; four great- nieces and great-nephews.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church in Delano, Minnesota. Gathering of family and friends will be from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the church prior to Mass on Saturday. Rev. Christopher Wenthe will officiate at the Mass with inurnment in the Calvary cemetery in Delano, Minnesota.

Sheldon Fertig Jr., 50

Sheldon E. Fertig Jr., 50, of Buffalo passed away suddenly at his home with family by his side on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 after a strong battle with cancer.

Sheldon was born on August 5, 1959 in Hallock, MN, the son of Sheldon Sr. and Donna Mae (Holmgren) Fertig.

Sheldon was united in marriage to Sharon Winter of Maple Lake, MN on August 7, 1981. They were blessed with two sons.

Sheldon enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being outdoors. He was a hard worker - always having a project (or 5) to keep him busy. He was a very talented man able to fix what was broken or able to create something needed to make the job easier. Sheldon took over the small engine business his Dad started many years before. He enjoyed helping all of his great customers and took pride in all that he did.

In 2008 he became a Grandpa. This was a great joy in his life and he had many plans to teach his grandson everything he knew.

Sheldon was a loving husband, patient dad, proud grandpa, and a dear friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.

Sheldon is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Sharon Fertig; children, Sheldon Fertig III of Buffalo and Shane (Kristina) Fertig of Maple Lake; grandchildren, Ryan and baby to be born in June; father, Sheldon Fertig Sr. of Buffalo; brother, Clair Fertig of Buffalo; sisters, Michele (Daryl) Cardinal of Monticello and Jonay (Kevin) Krone of Monticello; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Sheldon is preceded in death by his mother Donna Mae Fertig and grandparents.

Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers to the family.

Funeral Service held Friday, February 5, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo, 11 AM with gathering of friends and family at 10 AM at the Church.

Barbara Johnson, 69

Barbara A. Johnson, age 69, died on February 2, 2010, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield with Pastor Harvey Nelson and Pastor Christian Muellereile. Visitation was held on Friday evening from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home and continued one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment at Ness Cemetery.

Barbara Ann Johnson was born on March 11, 1940 in Hayland Township, Minnesota the daughter of Nels and Olyve Flatebo. She grew up and received her education in Windom graduating in 1958. She was united in marriage to James Burdell Johnson on September 4, 1960 in Windom. Together they lived in St. Paul, Annandale, Willmar, Kandiyohi and Litchfield since 1973. She was a member of The Blue Star Mothers and of Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed watching football where she was an armchair quarterback for the Vikings and Steelers. Barbara also enjoyed coin collecting, knitting, ceramics and music, especially Elvis.

Barbara is survived by her children; Joel Johnson of Litchfield, Jennifer (and Alan) Pecarina of Buffalo, Mark (and Missy) Johnson of Dassel, Eric Johnson of Litchfield, Stephanie Johnson of Litchfield; 12 grandchildren; Douglass Pecarina, Jessica Pecarina, Zachary Pecarina, Benjamin Pecarina, Allyson Pecarina, Vincent Pecarina, William Pecarina, Kenneth Pecarina, Justin Johnson, Tifani Johnson, Trinity Johnson and Christian Johnson; sisters, Marvis Brinegar of Round Lake Heights, IL, Melva Karkut of Pueblo West, CO, and half sister, Doris Thomas of Thornton, CO.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, twin grandsons Brent and Brandon Johnson and half sister Joyce Tollman.

Harvey Lorentz, 69

Harvey E. Lorentz, age 69, passed away February 1, 2010 at his home in Medina, Ohio.

Harvey was born February 12, 1940 to Ervin and Esther (Dehnbostel) Lorentz. He grew up on a farm near Annandale, MN and attended a country school. He graduated from Annandale High School in 1957 and the University of Minnesota in 1961. He had a hole in one at the U of MN Golf Course in 1960.

Harvey was united in marriage to Carol Burkland on June 23, 1962 in Grand Forks ND. He worked for Warner and Company and was Vice President. Prior to working at Warner and Company he was a high school teacher. He retired in 1996 and then managed Lorentz Investments and enjoyed having coffee with friends. He spent summers at the family lake home on Eagle Lake near Battle Lake, MN and the rest of the year at their home in Medina, OH.

He was a member of Eagle Lake Lutheran Church of Battle Lake, MN, Junior Chamber of Commerce, NDSU Teammakers, Sons of Norway, Dakota Medical Foundation, Special Deputy Sheriff Cass County, Ducks Unlimited, Elks, Eagles, Moose, Moorhead Country Club, and lifetime member of U of MN Alumni Association. He was President of Fargo Chamber Ambassadors, Secretary/Treasurer of Land Associates, State Director ND Independent Insurance Agents Professional Liability, Director of First Federal Savings and Loan, and President of Gateway Lions.

He received many Lion's awards including sponsoring 61 new members that retained membership for at least one year, participation in the extension of 7 new Lion's Clubs, Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, two Guiding Lion's awards and was elected to ND Lion's Hall of Fame in November 1995. On the District 5NE level he was Deputy District Governor, Cabinet Secretary/ Treasurer and 4 years District Chairman. He was Co-Chairman of the 1979 Multiple District 5 Convention with a record attendance of 1100.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; a son, John (Eileen) Lorentz and a daughter, Dr. Sara (Dr. Anthony) Prusinski; grandchildren Olivia and David Lorentz and Anthony and Roman Prusinski; two sisters Jeanne (Del) Matasovsky of Plymouth MN and Mavis McKeever of Roseville MN; 11 nieces and 4 nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his father and mother, Ervin and Esther Lorentz.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Eagle Lake Lutheran Church Youth Scholarship Fund.

Visitation: Saturday, February 6, 2010 from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. Eagle Lake Lutheran Church, 15456 Co. Hwy. 81, rural Battle Lake, MN.

Funeral Service: Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Eagle Lake Lutheran Church, 15456 Co. Hwy. 81, rural Battle Lake, MN.

Ruth Mae Mahler, 79

Ruth Mae (Bauermeister) Mahler was born on May 1, 1930 at home in Corcoran as Mae Ruth Bauermeister, daughter of Fred and Gertrude (Bursch) Bauermeister. She was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church as Ruth Mae and that became her name. It was changed to this officially in later years. Ruth grew up on the farm in Corcoran along with three brothers and five sisters. She attended school at the school house by their home - District 66, St. John's Lutheran School, and then to Osseo High School through 10th grade. She then went to Minneapolis and worked at Munsingwear and later at Sears.

Ruth married Harold Mahler on May 20, 1950 at St. John's Lutheran Church. Their marriage was blessed with six children. Harold was the most influential person in her life and he was the only man she ever loved. They lived their entire marriage on the farm in Hanover. She was a homemaker and later she worked for her cousin Liz's catering business. For many years, Ruth was an election judge and served on the Hanover Planning Commission. After Harold's death, she built a new home next door where she lived the rest of her life.

Ruth loved to play cards and played up to 3 days before her death. She belonged to several card clubs, both couples and womens during her life. Ruth also loved to play bingo and to bowl. She belonged to Hanover Senior Club. Ruth also did some traveling, not only with Harold, but also with her friends. She had a lot of good memories from those trips.

Ruth grew up in the Lutheran faith at St. John's in Corcoran. After her marriage she belonged the rest of her life to the Hanover Evangelical (now Methodist) Church. Her faith was an important part of her life. Her service at the church included teaching Sunday School, held offices in the women's group, custodial work, delegate to conferences, and making the sloppy joes for many years for the ice cream social.

Her family was also important to her; not only her husband and children, but also her siblings and extended family. Her life was filled with family activities.

Ruth is survived by her loving family: children Linda Dixon of Buffalo, Gerry (Julie Braun) Mahler of Annandale, Carol (Gary) Dixon of St. Michael, Loren (Belinda) Mahler of Hanover, Cindy (Russ) Kottke of Hanover, Jim (Diane) Mahler of Hanover; grandchildren: Alicia (Chad) Stoll, Shaun (Geri) Dixon, Nathan (Tiffany) Dixon, Christy (Daren) Soukup, Gerri Marie (Lonnie) Thayer, Crystal Alama, Heather Alama, Mallory Dixon, Kyle Dixon, Dustin Mahler, Nicki (Randy) Kirschman, George Gilliver, Casey Kottke, Briana Kottke, Blake Mahler, Tyson Mahler, Melaina Mahler; great-grandchildren: Shelby, Alandra, Annika Stoll, Levi Dixon, Jordyn and Tyler Soukup, Mikayla and Markis Thayer, Alexis, Kylee, Reid Kirschman, Carter and Carson Gilliver, Sophie Pepin, Alexis Alama; siblings, Myrtle (Cecil) Gelle of Grasston, Fritz (Joy) Bauermeister of New Richmond, WI, Howard (Evie) Bauermeister of New Hope, Marion (Al Berge) Faue-Berge of Osseo, Judy (Loren) Marschel of Okabena; brother-in-law Alvin Cook of Backus; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ruth is preceded in death by her husband Harold in 1988, grandson Jesse Mahler, parents Fred and Gertrude Bauermeister, brother and sister-in-law Vernon and Helen Bauermeister, sisters and brother-in-law Lucille Cook, Lois and Maynard Manzke.

Funeral Service held Monday Feb. 8, 11 AM at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover; time of visitation held Sunday at the church from 3-6 and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment Hanover Zion United Methodist Cemetery. Prayer service Sunday at 5:30 PM.

The Peterson Chapel St. Michael-Albertville served the family.

Charles Skarsten, 69

Charles "Chuck" Ells-worth Skarsten, 69, of Maple Lake was found deceased on Monday, February 8, 2010 at his home.

Chuck was born on July 17th, 1941 in Benson, MN the son of Leif Elias and Goldie Adeline (Spaanem) Skarsten.

He is survived by his loving family: children, Shane (Jennifer) Skarsten of Isanti, MN and Wade Skarsten of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren, Shaina and Jennabeth; siblings, Shirley (Gene) Blum of Buena Park, CA, Ted Skarsten of Rogers, AR, Marlene (Arlen) Kittel of Deer Park, WI, Judy and Ken Rasmussen of King-man, AZ, Linda (John) Grunewald of Kingman, AZ, Lois Skarsten (Marv Han-son) of Petaluma, CA, Vicki (Phil) Pinard of Lake Havasu City, AZ, Doug (Cheri) Skarsten of Kingman, AZ, Wayne Skarsten of Kingman, AZ, and Bradley (Cathy) Skars-ten of Garden Grove, CA; 23 nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by: his parents, Leif and Goldie Skarsten; and brothers, Mark Skarsten, Bruce Skarsten and Lyle Skars-ten.

A gathering of friends and family are celebrating Chuck's life on Saturday Feb. 13, beginning at 10 a.m., with a memorial service at 11 a.m. in the Peterson Chapel, Buffalo.

Leo Bokusky, 62

Leo A. Bokusky, age 62 of Wheaton, formerly of Delano died on Thursday, Mar. 4, 2010 at his home in Wheaton. He was born September 22, 1947 to Jacob "Jake" and Margaret (Pillatzke) Bokusky in Watertown.

Leo served in the Army during the Vietnam war seeing duty in Okinawa. Over the years, Leo worked for the Delano Granite Works, St. Peter Catholic Church in Delano, Oildyne and Washington Scientific. He loved to fish and spend time in the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jacob "Jake" and Margaret Bokusky; brothers-in-law Donald Kowalke, George "Shorty" Karels Sr. and a niece Joann Kowalke.

Leo is survived by his siblings and spouses Mary Kowalke, Laura Karels, Leo and Helen Neaton, Edward and Gerri Bokusky, Louie Bokusky, Joseph and Diane Bokusky.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Delano. Rev. Timothy Cloutier officiated at the Mass with interment in the Calvary Cemetery in Delano.

Casket bearers were Jeremy Bokusky, James Bokusky, Patrick Kowalke, Bruce Karels, Tom Karels, and Bethany Karels.
