Ellsworth Swanson

Ellsworth D. "Swanie" Swanson, pilot, boater, jokester and much-loved dad; July 2, 1915 - January 26, 2005; in Alamo, California.
Born in his grandmother's house in Buffalo, Minn. to Frank A. Swanson and Ida Marie Rundquist. His father was a depot agent for the Soo Line.
The family, which would grow to include five children, lived in several towns in Minnesota and South Dakota over the years, including Buffalo, Paynesville, Brewton, Nashua, Britton, Sisseton and Veblen.
Swanie, known then as "Ells, " graduated from Veblen High School in 1934. Because there weren't enough boys to field a basketball team, he actually played on the varsity team five years, including one while he was in eighth grade.
Although born into a railroad family, when Swanie spied his first airplane at a young age, he fell in love for the first time. He soloed for the first time in Minneapolis at Wold-Chamberlain Field in 1934, which coincidentally was built in part by his uncle, August Rundquist, a carpenter. He earned his commercial license in 1935. Many residents of the Veblen area took their first flight with the young pilot Swanson when he returned with his first plane to work the harvest. He would supplement his $1 a day wage by taking passengers up for a short, breathtaking spin.
After operating his own flight service and school in partnership with John Shanks, and later, Willis Strong, back in Minneapolis, he joined American Airlines as one of its youngest pilots in 1939.
After 17 years based in Chicago, he transferred to San Francisco in 1956, happily leaving the snow shovel hanging in the garage. Over the years he carried many well-known passengers, including Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Orland Cepeda and Harmon Kilebrew. Perhaps the most gracious was First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who came to the cockpit door of his DC-3 to introduce herself. Swanie was flying 747s when he retired as a captain after 36 years and 29, 000 hours in 1975.
He fell in love for the second time when he met Mary Jane Covert, who was attending nursing school at the time in order to become a stewardess. Instead, she married the pilot and shared his life for 48 years until her death in 1987. They raised three loving children, Tony (Rosalinda), B.J. (Mardi) and Rex (Diane). Swanie is also survived by two grandsons, Randall and David, and his siblings Frank James, Lorraine and Germaine. His brother Jerry preceded him in death.
His last great love was boating in the Delta in Northern California, which he enjoyed for nearly fifty years aboard several boats named "Kwitchurbel-yakin." He twice served as Commodore of his yacht club, Bridge Marina, where he is remembered for his endless supply of jokes and ready smile.
Dad, you're cleared for final takeoff - we'll raise a toast to you... after all, "it's five o'clock somewhere."
Donations may be made to: American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum, P.O. Box 619617, MD 808 GSWFA, DFW Airport, Texas 75261-9617, to your local hospice or to your favorite charity.
