Bernadine Larson

Bernadine Lucille Larson, nee Schleif, 89 of Buffalo, died peacefully December 10, 2005 at Park View Care Center, surrounded by her family. Bernadine was born April 1, 1916 in Rockford, the fourth child and first daughter of Edward and Anna Rasmina (Minnie) Schleif. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and lovingly served God.
Bernie graduated from Rockford High School and completed a business course. She worked in Minneapolis and Detroit as an executive secretary. When she returned to Minnesota, she accepted a date from a young man she had met as a teenager. Friendship quickly grew into love, and Bernie and Carroll were married on January 11, 1941 in Monticello. They made their first home in Minneapolis before moving to Buffalo in 1944, and felt truly blessed as their family grew to include Nancy, Jared, Christine, Cynthia and Jan.
Bernadine was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Carroll E. Larson; an infant grandson; brothers Stanley, Orville, Gordon, Neal, Alan and Wayne and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. She is survived by her five children, Nancy (Richard) Haskin, Jared (Del) Larson, Christine (Dan) Husom, Dr. Cynthia "Tia" Larson, and Jan (Lib) Larson; thirteen grandchildren, Elizabeth Husom, Luke Husom, Rachel (Adam) Bebus, Morynn (Phil) Marx, Joseph Svobodny, Adrienne (Ryan) Murray, Michael Larson, Anna Svobodny, Julia Larson, Marie Larson, Alex Larson, Michael Quady, and Eli Larson; great-grandson, Samuel Marx; brothers Grant "Bud" (Janet) Schleif, Dale Schleif, Winton (Joan) Schleif, and James (Patty) Schleif; sister Melba Louisiana; sisters-in-law Marjory Schleif, Hazel Larson and Josephine Larson, and many other relatives and friends.
It is difficult to capture Bernie's essence, character and accomplishments in a brief writing. She set a fine example, creating an atmosphere of love and harmony in the home. She sang as she worked on her many projects, making each task seem fun. Bernie served in her church and community, active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Sunday School, University of Minnesota Home Extension, Sewing Circle, PTA, Cub Scouts and political organizations.
Bernie's creative talents included gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting, cooking, canning produce, making wine, home decorating, light carpentry and entertaining. As one of her friends stated, "When she gave a party everything was perfect." Her daughter said, "She could grow marigolds and turn them into a lovely floral arrangement, a pressed flower picture or a fine wine."
Bernie was an early advocate of organic gardening and using herbal remedies. She loved digging in the dirt - the miracle of putting a seed in the ground and watching it sprout and grow. Bernie felt especially close to God in her gardens. Countless friends and neighbors were grateful recipients of her beautiful flowers and garden produce. Although her son Jan vowed he would never have a garden when he grew up, he plans to expand his garden next year. Apparently, the love of dirt is contagious.
Each Christmas, Bernie created an atmosphere of joy and wonder in her home with handcrafted wreaths and decorations and thousands of cookies. The morning of December 24th, when the baking was done, she would cut out and sew her daughters' dresses for the Christmas Eve program. She never missed the deadline. Bernie was a patient, kind, devoted wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her grandchildren were the lights of her life. Bernie's family is grateful for her life on earth and her eternal life with her Savior in Heaven.
Visitation for Bernadine Larson was held on Monday, December 12 from 4-7 p.m. with funeral services on Tuesday, December 13, 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Buffalo. Pallbearers were Luke Husom, Joseph Svobodny, Michael Larson, Jory Louisiana, Scott Schleif and Steven Schleif.
