Olson, Carlos Van
Carlos Van Olson, 89, 710 Mankato Avenue, died Monday, September 25, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital.

Carlos was born June 17, 1911, in Portal, No. Dak., the son of Danella (Feigel) and Richard C. Olson. He married Ruth M. Kloetzke on May 5, 1934 in Winona.

Carlos was an inspector for the Warner-Swasey Company in Winona. He retired after 29-1/2 years of service on July 1, 1976.

He was a member of Central Lutheran Church, the Red Men's Lodge and the Elks.

He is survived by two sons, Ugene C. (Joan) Olson of Austin, Tex., and Richard O. (Patricia) Olson of Winona; a daughter, Roxann Riddle of Mound, Minn.; twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a special friend, Doris Tybora.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ruth, and a foster sister, Donnella Drazkowski.

Funeral services were Friday, September 29 at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home with Rev. Gerhard H. Huggenvick, retired pastor of Central Lutheran Church officiating.

Acting as honorary pallbearers were all of Carlos' grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services assisted the family with the arrangements.

Pletke, Catharine "Kitty" M.
Catharine "Kitty" M. Pletke, 92, Countryside Retirement Home, Sioux City, Iowa, and formerly of Winona, died Tuesday, September 26, 2000 in Sioux City.

Catharine was born April 8, 1908 in Winona, the daughter of Bertha (Plumb) and David John MacPherson. She married Paul E. Pletke on September 17, 1932, at Central united Methodist Church in Winona.

Following a one year teaching stint in Frazee, Minn., Catharine became a teacher in the Winona Junior High School for many years. Later in life she authored a local column entitled, "Ole' Man River, " in the Winona Daily News.

She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and a past president of its United Methodist Women, a member of the Winona County Historical Society, Community Memorial Auxiliary, Westfield Golf Course, Old Settlers, DAR, and a life member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 141.

She is survived by one son, Charles D. (Bonnie) Pletke of West Des Moines, Iowa; one daughter, Marian B. (Robert) Jacobson, Moville, Iowa; one brother, A.K. (Helen) MacPherson of Eureka, Cal.; six grandchildren, Kris (Marea) and Tom Jacobson, both of Sioux City, Bill (Katie) Jacobson of Ottumwa, Iowa, Cathy (Mike) Roling, Clive, Iowa, David Pletke of Spearfish, So. Dak., and Cindy (Ryan) Blackard, Colorado Springs, CO; and twelve great-grandchildren, Erik, Ben, Sam, Kyle, Derek, Larkin, Michael and Reilly Jacobson and Tyler, Elizabeth, Matthew and Katie Roling.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982 and a brother, Keith, in 1913.

Funeral services were Saturday, September 30 at Central United Methodist Church with Rev. Mary Hurmence officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family respectfully requests memorials to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 2025 East River Parkway, Minneapolis, MN 55414.

Kauphusman, Robert Patrick
Robert Patrick Kauphusman, 91, St. Anne Hospice, died Wednesday, September 28, 2000 at the hospice.

Robert was born on November 24, 1908 in Winona, the son of Mary (Mohan) and William John Kauphusman. He graduated from Cotter High School and attended business college. He proudly served his country during World War II from 1942-1945 in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Ancon. He married Catherine Louise Risic on July 1, 1946 in Winona.

Robert worked for Bay State Milling Company, Winona, before beginning a career as a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Winona. He retired after 20+ years of service.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Westfield Golf Course. He was also a member of the Winona Amateur Radio Club and one of the nation's oldest licensees, with the call letters, "WQNE."

He is survived by his wife, Catherine of St. Anne Hospice; one son, Patrick (Cathy) Kauphusman, Winona; three grandchildren, Robyn, Jeff (Dana) and Kevin; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Logan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were Saturday, September 30 at St. Anne Hospice Chapel with Rev. Joseph L. Keefe officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Flag presentation was by the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9, Winona.

Pallbearers were Robyn Comero, Jeff, Kevin and Dana Kauphusman, and William Hardt.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Winona Amateur Radio Club.

Memorials may be given to St. Anne Hospice.

Waters, Gregory M. "Bowzer"
Gregory M. "Bowzer" Waters, 51, of 707 West Tenth Street, died Wednesday, September 27, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital.

He was born January 27, 1949 in Winona to Warren J. "Duke" and Josephine "Lover" (Banicki) Waters. He married Betty R. Koopman on July 3, 1976 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Church, Winona.

He was employed at Fiberite Corp. and part time at Kwik Trip.

Gregory was a member of St. Casimir's Catholic Parish. He was an avid fisherman and "Packer Backer."

Survivors include his wife, Betty of Winona; two children, Trudi Waters of Winona and Craig Waters, at home; his mother, Josephine Waters of Winona; his mother-in-law, Margaret Koopman of Winona; six brothers and sisters: a twin brother, Dennis (Claire) Waters of Fountain City, Wis., Karen Waters, Susan (Jon) Freeman, Linda (Albert) Thompson-Wickboldt, all of Winona, Louis Waters of Fountain City, and Paul Waters of Arcadia, Wis.; sisters-in-law, Nanci Griffin of Winona, Debra Denzer, Rushford, Minn., and Sheila Waters, Dodge, Wis.; aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents, John and Elizabeth Banicki and John and Della Waters, and his father-in-law, Robert Koopman.

Funeral services were Saturday, September 30 at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home with Rev. James W. Hennessy officiating.

Roddel, David A.
David Arney Roddel, Sioux Falls, So. Dak., was born July 19, 1914, and died Wednesday, September 27, 2000 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were Saturday, September 30 in Sioux Falls. Burial was in Hills of Rest Memorial Park in Sioux Falls.

Gordon, Grace
Grace Gordon, 91, of the Watkins Home, Winona, died Wednesday, September 27, 2000 at the home.

Grace was born on June 1, 1909 in Winona, the daughter of Laura (Stratmann) and Elmer E.E. Rote. She graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1926, the College of Saint Teresa with a B.S. in 1930, and Winona State College with an M.S. in 1960. Grace was a long term substitute teacher in the Winona Public School District. She married Harvey Gordon on October 30, 1930 in St. Paul, Minn.

She was a member of McKinley United Methodist Church, a life member of Winona Chapter #141, O.E.S., Winona Shrine Auxiliary, Winona County Historical Society, and the Hiawatha Valley Audubon Club.

She is survived by her son, John M. Gordon of Los Altos Hills, Cal.; two grandchildren, Linda Wilberg and Vicki Riddell; four great-grandchildren, Christopher, Jake, Ashley and Chelsea; and a sister, Eunice Rihs.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985, a brother, Elmer Rote, and a sister, Verdelma Smith.

Funeral services were Saturday, September 30 in the Great Hall of the Watkins home with Rev. Shirley Duncanson of McKinley United Methodist Church officiating.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services assisted the family with the arrangements.
