Harder, Loretta M.
Loretta M. (Ewald) Harder, 90, a Rochester native and former resident of Lewiston and Winona, died Wednesday, September 27, 2000 at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire, Wis.

Loretta was born July 11, 1910 to Walter and Ella (Boie) Ewald in Rochester. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1929 and worked for Roberts Hotel Corporation in Winona, where she met and worked with Harry F. Harder. They were married on July 23, 1930.

They lived briefly in South Dakota, and then settled in Mankato, where they lived from 1941-1971. During that time Loretta and Harry managed the restaurant at the Saulpaugh Hotel for five years, owned and operated the Cottage Inn Restaurant from 1946-48, and finally, managed the Burton Hotel Restaurant and Lounge from 1948-1956. From 1956 on, Loretta spent her life helping, supporting and caring for her husband and many members of her large extended family. After Mr. Harder retired in 1974, he and Loretta moved to Lewiston and then back to Winona where they lived until 1991. From 1991 until her death, Mrs. Harder resided in Eau Claire where she lived independently in an apartment and often watched after and cared for two of her great-grandchildren, Tyler and Hayley.

Mrs. Harder was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harry, in 1991, and by four brothers and sisters.

She is survived by sons, Harry R. Harder of Eau Claire, Wis. and William E. Harder of Highland Beach, Fla.; a brother, David Ewald of Stewartville; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and many other members of her extended family.

Funeral services were Saturday, September 30 at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Lewiston with Revs. David A. Fischer and Michael Al Lindemann officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, Wis.

Hoff Funeral Home's -Lewiston Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.

Fort, Maria Gertrude
Maria Gertrude Fort, 53, of 265 Vila St., died Saturday, January 27, 2001 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital, Winona, from complications of lung cancer.

Maria was born on January 13, 1948 in Vienna, Austria, the daughter of Maria (Unger) and Joseph Dietrich Koch. She married Kenneth Fort, Jr., on May 16, 1978 in Germany.

She came to the United States in 1979, returned to Germany, and returned permanently to Winona in 1985. She was employed as a packer with Brach Confections Inc. for over ten years.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Domingo (Maria) Diotalevi of Winona and Luigi Unger of Germany; four daughters, Christina Fort, Carry Fort and Vesna (Daniel) Carlson, all of Winona, and Isabella Unger of Germany; five grandchildren, including Antonio Diotalevi and Elizabeth Carlson; and a brother, David Sekares of Germany.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Anna Marie Fort.

Funeral services were Tuesday, January 30 at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home with Rev. Glenn Sanders of Cornerstone Community Church officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

A memorial is being arranged.

Miller, Beulah
Beulah Miller, 94, went to be with her Lord and Savior in the mansions of heaven on Friday, January 26, 2001 in the Intensive Care Unit of St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Beulah was born October 19, 1906 in Harmony, Minn., to Ross and Etta (Coyle) Fishbaugher. She was baptized and came to know the Lord at the Root River Church of the Brethren. At the age of 20 she moved to Winona and worked for the Bailey, McConnon and E.L. King families. She married Clarence William Miller on August 8, 1936. They resided in Kellogg, Minn., their first years of marriage and moved to Winona in 1947, where they owned and operated the Automatic Washerette.

In October of 1954, Beulah's husband initiated his career with the AAL Insurance Co. Beulah was employed by the YMCA as their caterer on-site and did the cooking numerous years at the YMCA camp. Together they also managed and operated the Westgate Motel for many years. The past two years, Beulah has resided at Callista Court and the Alterra Sterling Home.

Beulah was a member of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church and served on the Women's Club and Ladies Aid. She attended Bible study faithfully at Redeemer Lutheran Church for the past 20 years.

Beulah is survived by a sister, Marian Loquai; a sister-in-law, Margaret Fishbaugher; three children and twelve grandchildren, Lois (David) Haase of Winona and their children, Deborah, DeeAnn, Dawn, Dennis, Douglas and Derrick, Phyllis (Lee) Zabrocki of Big Rapids, Mich. and their sons, Jeffrey, Jonathan and Joshua and Eugene (Karen) Miller of Rochester and their children, Todd, Tom and Troy; and twenty-three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and a sister.

Funeral services were Tuesday, January 30 at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Winona, with Revs. O.H. Lindholm and James Nelson officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Casketbearers were Dennis and Douglas Haase, Jeffrey and Jonathan Zabrocki, and Todd and Tom Miller.

Honorary casketbearers were Derrick Haase, Deborah Batten, Dawn Groner, Dee Hanson, Joshua Zabrocki and Troy Miller.

The family requests memorials to the organization of your choice.

Hjerleid, Helen B.
Helen B. Hjerleid, 85, of Blair, Wis., died Saturday, January 27, 2001 at the Syverson Home in Eau Claire, Wis.

Helen was born on January 20, 1916 in South Beaver Creek, rural Ettrick, Wis., to Bernt "Ben" and Helene (Simonson) Severson. She was baptized and confirmed in the South Beaver Creek Lutheran Church. On October 6, 1937, Helen was united in marriage to Melvin H. Hjerleid in Blair where they lived the rest of their lives. Melvin preceded Helen in death on February 6, 1986, after forty-eight happy years together.

Four children were born to Helen and Melvin and all survive. They are: LeMay (David) Nelson of Mondovi, Wis., Harlan (Lynda) Hjerleid of Galesville, Wis., Bobbie Hjerleid of Eau Claire, Wis., and Jill (David Hughes) Hjerleid of Pigeon Falls, Wis. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Funeral services were Tuesday, January 30, at the First Lutheran Church in Blair, with Revs. Gary Hanson and Kevin Jones officiating. Burial was in Rest Haven Cemetery in Blair.

Casketbearers were Daniel, Matthew and Paul Nelson, Allen Dahl, Eugene Hjerleid and Maynard Dahl.

Memorials may be given in Helen's name.

Jereczek, Hubert J.
Hubert J. Jereczek, 87, of Arcadia/Pine Creek, Wis., died Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare in Arcadia.

He was born in Pine Creek on August 25, 1913, to John and Pelagia (Konkel) Jereczek. He married Mildred Maliszewski on September 26, 1944, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Creek.

Hubert had been a farmer and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Creek.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred of Arcadia; two sons, Jerome (Ruth) Jereczek of Plymouth, Minn., and Kenneth (Diane) Jereczek of Pine Creek; two daughters, Jeanine (Robert) Davis of Arcadia, and Charlene Helms of Marshfield, Wis.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, August Jereczek of Winona.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, January 27, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Creek with Rev. Robert Polcyn officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Casketbearers were Lee Davis, Shawn Davis, Marty Helms, Paul Jereczek, Tim Wilson and Bob Kraig.

Memorials may be made to the Holy Family Education Center of Franciscan Skemp Hospital Foundation, Arcadia.

Killian Funeral Home of Arcadia, Wis. assisted the family with the arrangements.

Platteter, Leo B.
Leo B. Platteter, 84, of Waumandee, Wis., died Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at St. Michael's Lutheran Home in Fountain City, Wis.

He was born December 10, 1916, to Joseph and Louise (Augustina) Platteter in Minnesota City, Minn., and grew up in the Fountain City area. On September 12, 1964, Leo married Zenita (Dittrich) Deck at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waumandee.

He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters Court 966 and a past member of the St. Boniface Cemetery Board. He worked for many creameries in the area and was a retired janitor from Arcadia High School. Leo loved fishing, gardening, woodworking, and "puttering" in his basement.

He is survived by his wife, Zenita Platteter of Waumandee; a son, Bob Deck of Waumandee; a daughter, Sandy (Larry) Ruben of Buffalo City, Wis.; four grandchildren, Kristy Ruben of Winona, Tom Ruben of Fountain City, Jenny (Jim) Knutson of Arcadia, Wis., and Jill Deck of Winona; two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Nicholas Knutson; a brother, Albert (Dorothea) of Winona; sisters-in-law, Mary Platteter of Arcadia and Irene Dittrich of Waumandee; and a sister, Alida Dittrich of Campbellsport.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Arnold, Walter and Bill, two sisters, Florence Thicke and Olive Ziegler, and a brother-in-law, Leonard Dittrich.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, January 27, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waumandee, with Rev. John Steiner officiating. Burial was in St. Boniface Cemetery.

Casketbearers were Bob Platteter, Dave Platteter, Myron Ziegler, Bernard Thicke, and Allen Dittrich.

Honorary casketbearers were the Catholic Order of Foresters Court 966.

The Killian Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.
