Lt. Colonel Joseph J. Lyden (Retired)
Lt. Colonel Joseph James Lyden, U.S. Army (Retired), age 85, formerly a long-time resident of Petersburg, Virginia, died on May 21, 2000. He was surrounded by his loved ones at the Watkins Home in Winona, Minnesota, where he had been a resident for the past four years.

Joe was born on November 10, 1914, in Westchester County, New York, to Adelaide and James Lyden, and grew up in Irvington, New York. He married Barbara Armstrong on August 8, 1942, and together they raised four children.

In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a drill sergeant training troops during World War II at Fort Lee, Virginia, until 1944, when Joe was then commissioned as an officer in the Army Quartermaster Corps. For the remainder of his active duty career, he served on assignments in Virginia, the Philippines, three times in Brooklyn, New York, as well as Chicago, Korea, and Okinawa. Joe was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor during the Korean War.

He was an avid ballroom dancer and a great fan of big band music. His family and many friends will remember him for his charm, love of fun, flair with the English language, and concern for others. Although he struggled with physical limitations in his later years at the Watkins Home, Joe shone his light on all those around him and kept up a lively correspondence with friends back East.
