Sobotta, Jerome G. (Bud)
Jerome G. "Bud" Sobotta, 75, formerly of Arcadia, WI, but residing in the state of Washington since November of 1952, died Wednesday, December 29, 1999 in a nursing home in Spokane, WA, which was his home for the last ten years. Previous to this, he lived and worked for ALCOA in Wenatchee, WA for 34 years, retiring in January 1986.

He was born in Arcadia on January 9, 1924 to Frank and Kate Sobotta. He graduated from Arcadia High School in 1942 where he was a star athlete in football, basketball and track. He later pitched Arcadia City Team baseball and was involved in many close pitching duels with neighboring rivals. In 1943 and 1944 he played on a semi-pro team in Great Falls, MT while employed there. Bud also won several golf tournaments in this area and in Washington. He was a real sports enthusiast and was very knowledgeable on facts and statistics of all sports.

In 1945 he operated Bud's Cafe on Arcadia's main street for a year, sold it and returned again two years later.

He married Joyce Kampa of Arcadia while in the service in June of 1949. Later they were divorced. He was also divorced from his second wife whom he married in 1972.

He is survived by his three children, Shelley, Gerald Kim, and Debbie; and two brothers, Franklin of Arcadia and David of LaBelle, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Orlando (Boyo), Cournelius (Turney), Dominic, and a sister, Bernice (Klonecki).

Private funeral services will be held in Wenatchee after which the body will be cremated.

Local memorial services will be held in St. Stanislaus Church, Arcadia in the spring. The ashes will be interred in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Arcadia.

Roettiger, Vera S.
Vera S. Roettiger, 92, Madison, WI, died Thursday, December 23, 1999 at Mulder Health Care Facility, West Salem, WI.

She was born September 11, 1907, in West Salem, to Fred G. and Lizzie (Wege) Stelloh. On June 15, 1927 she married Emmons L. Roettiger in Minnesota and he preceded her in death on September 20, 1976.

Vera was a member of Luther Memorial Church and the Blackhawk Country Club, both in Madison, WI.

Survivors include three sisters, Helen Foley of Milwaukee, WI, Lucille Beyersdorf of West Salem, and Mildred Saley of Bangor, WI; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Meyer, and a brother, Erwin Stelloh.

A private family graveside memorial service and burial will be held in Fountain City Public Cemetery at a later date.

Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home of West Salem, is in charge of arrangements.

DeWitte, Joanne Pauline "Joey"
Joanne Pauline "Joey" DeWitte, 67, of 207 East Tenth St., died Tuesday, January 11, 2000 at her home.

Joanne, known as Joey, was born in Jasper, MN, on April 5, 1932, the daughter of Hilma Josephine (Alstad) Benson. Following graduation from Jasper High School, Joey was employed by the Jasper State Bank as a teller. She married Dale Julius DeWitte in Jasper on September 12, 1954.

Joey was a dedicated mother and remained home for the majority of the time raising their seven children. The family moved to Winona in 1971. She worked for Fiberite as a weaver for 10 years and also for the J.R. Watkins Company as an assembly line worker for an additional 10 years.

Joey immersed herself in family and friends and their activities. She also enjoyed crocheting and craft making to be used as gifts for others.

She is survived by her husband, Dale; two sons, Chris (Sharon) and Jack (Vickie), both of Winona; five daughters, Barbara (Jozef) Kravanja, Tracey (Robert) Benedict, Julie (Raymond) Benedict, Tammey DeWitte Barber and Anita (Dennis) Cisewski, all of Winona; and eighteen grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Lorris Benson, sisters Anita Schaeffer and Marcella Houg, and grandson Tyler Lee Cisewski.

Funeral services were Saturday, January 15 at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home with Rev. Amanda Merlin-Molstad, local Gundersen Lutheran Hospital Chaplain officiating.

The grandchildren were considered honorary pallbearers as they enjoyed her unending devotion to them.

Memorials may be directed to the Gundersen Lutheran Cancer Center, c/o Foundation Office, 1836 South Avenue, LaCrosse, WI 54601.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

Meinke, Violet E.
Violet E. Meinke, 80, of Woodbury Health Care Center and a Winona resident for 75 years, died Wednesday, January 12, 2000.

Funeral services were Friday, January 14, in South St. Paul, MN. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.

Tews, Robert E. "Bob"
Robert E. "Bob" Tews, 71, Lewiston, MN, died Thursday, January 13, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

Bob was born September 30, 1928 to Edward and Elda (Crowell) Tews in Stockton, MN. He grew up in Lewiston and entered the Army in 1953, where he spent time in Germany. On September 19, 1959 he married Verda Lewis in Hastings. They lived in Rochester, where he worked construction and drove cab.

In 1971 they moved to Lewiston where they owned the White Knight Bar and started the first waste removal service in Lewiston. In 1982 he started working for Winona Excavating and worked there until he was in a car accident in 1991 and then retired.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church at Silo and the American Legion in Lewiston.

Bob will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Verda; daughter, Elaine (John) Landrum of Zumbro Falls, MN; granddaughter, Barbara (Steve) Hallet of Faribault, MN; grandson, Timothy Landrum of Faribault; five great-grandchildren; a brother Allyn "Pete" (Carol) Tews of Oregon; four nephews and one niece.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 18 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Silo with Rev. William Meilner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday, January 17 at Hoff Funeral Homes-Lewiston Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.

Hoff Funeral Homes - Lewiston Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Ziegler, Anna E.
Anna E. Ziegler, 90, of St. Michael's Lutheran Home, Fountain City, WI, died Thursday, January 13, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

Anna was born in Tamarack, Trempealeau County, WI, on October 3, 1909, to Gilbert and Emma (Cheselson) Knutson. She married Harry C. Ziegler on September 11, 1944 in Winona. He died July 27, 1983.

She was a member of St. Michael's Ev. Lutheran Church, Fountain City.

She is survived by her daughter, Shirley (Allen) Engel of Fountain City; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and two step-brothers.

Funeral services will be Sunday, January 16 at 2 p.m. at St. Michael's Ev. Lutheran Church in Fountain City, with Rev. Elroy V. Conradt officiating. Burial will be in Fountain City Public Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 1-2 p.m.

Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Engel, Tony Engel, Kevin Jumbeck, Brian Wolfe, David Ziegler and Melvin Conrad.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Michael's Lutheran Home in Fountain City.

Colby-Fawcett Funeral Home, Fountain City, WI, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
