Scheevel, Minerva Halvorson
Minerva Halvorson Scheevel, a homemaker, died Friday, February 18, 2000 at the Sauer Memorial Home. She is formerly of 3845 West Seventh St., Goodview, MN.

She was born July 4, 1911 in Yucatan Township of Houston County, MN. She married Warren M. Scheevel on November 18, 1933 in Winona. They recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.

She and her husband had been residents of the Winona area since 1957 and she was a member of Central Lutheran Church in Winona. Minerva was an active Pink Lady of the Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was an avid golfer, loved to travel and was a fine seamstress.

Mrs. Scheevel was the youngest of ten children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Caroline Erickson Halvorson and her nine brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her devoted husband Warren, who is a resident of the Sauer Home; her son, Robert (Janet S.) Scheevel of Grand Junction, CO; three grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Tuesday, February 22 at Central Lutheran Church with Rev. Michelle Rem officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Casketbearers were Mark, Jay, Chris and Ron Scheevel, Roger Halvorson and Robert Klebig.

Memorials may be made to a church or charity of the donor's choice.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

Virnig, Aloys "Pike"
Aloys "Pike" Virnig, 76, St. Charles, MN, died Friday, February 18, 2000 at his home, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born April 27, 1923 to Adrian and Agnes (Perkins) Virnig in Rochester, WI. The family moved to Dodge Center where Pike attended schools, later going into the Army during World War II. He then moved to St. Charles where he married Betty Callahan on August 26, 1948 at St. Charles Catholic Church.

Together Pike and Betty owned and operated the St. Charles Body Shop for 30 plus years, then a bicycle repair shop.

Pike was a 55-year member of the St. Charles American Legion, a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and a long time usher at church. His hobbies included fixing bicycles and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; four daughters, Gail (Gary) Gardner of Highlands Ranch, CO, Cherie (Bob) Loken of St. Charles, Nancy (Larry) Tarara of Albert Lea, and Kim (Kevin) Ihrke of St. Charles; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Adrian Virnig of Dodge Center and Wilferd Virnig of Minneiska; and three sisters, Evelyn Majerus of Austin, Leona Meyers of Coon Rapids and Merle Kreidermacher of Plainview.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

A Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 26 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Rev. James Callahan officiating. There will be a rosary at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Pike's body was donated to the Mayo Medical Foundation, and there will be no wake service.

Allen, George Rue
George Rue Allen, 100, of Winona, died Sunday, February 20, 2000 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 3, 1899 in Byron, MN, to William and Anna Allen. He married Marie Calkins on June 22, 1923.

George worked at the Union National Bank, Rochester, until 1934. He then joined Mid-Continent Petroleum Corporation of Tulsa, OK, as a supervisor of southern Minnesota. Later he owned and operated the International Harvester dealership at Rochester before retiring and moving to Winona in 1962.

Over the years, George was a part of many service organizations in Rochester and Winona. He was a past president of The Rochester Automobile Club, director of Rochester Chamber of Commerce, member of the Rochester Masonic Lodge No. 21, Scottish Rite and I.O.O.F. Lodge, and a member of the Rochester and Winona Kiwanis Clubs. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Winona.

Survivors include his wife, Marie; one brother, James Allen of Bloomington, IN; one daughter, Beverly (Allen) Knutson, Chatfield, MN; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

His parents, two brothers and a daughter preceded him in death.

At George's request, his body was donated to the Mayo Medical Foundation, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 23 at Central United Methodist Church, Winona, with Rev. Mary Hurmence officiating.

Memorials may be directed to Central United Methodist Church, Winona.

Doelle, Ruth Marie "Ruthie"
Ruth Marie "Ruthie" Doelle, 56, S2765 River Road, Fountain City, WI, died Sunday, February 20, 2000.

Ruthie was born December 2, 1943, to Joseph and Ella (Powell) Bremer. She married Glen Doelle on June 22, 1963 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Arcadia, WI.

Ruthie shared her many gifts and talents with numerous people. Baking, cake decorating or hours on horseback were all talents she willingly shared. She died doing what she loved.

Her love was shared with many, but especially with her family. Her husband, daughters and grandchildren meant everything to her.

She is survived by her husband, Glen; her daughters, Wendy (Rich) Baures of Buffalo City, WI, and Robin (Pete) Woychik, Independence, WI. There were none as precious to her as her five grandchildren, John, Carrie and Katie Baures, and Rachel and Ben Woychik. She is also survived by a sister, Romelle (Jim) Baertsch, Rochester, MN; brothers-in-law, Bill Platteter and Darrold (Ducy) Doelle; many nieces and nephews; and her extended family of babysitting kids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her three brothers, Roger, Ron and Bob Bremer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 23 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fountain City, with Rev. Raymond J. Pedretti celebrant. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fountain City in the spring.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home in Fountain City. Preliminary services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be Dan, Tom, Joe and Bob Platteter, Kenny Baertsch and Frank Doelle.

Honorary casketbearer will be John Baures.

Her quick departure from us leaves a void in the hearts of all that knew her. Her easygoing smile and her enthusiasm for life will be greatly missed by all who are left behind.

Bittner, Betty Jane
Betty Jane Bittner, 67, of Piepers Valley Road, Fountain City, WI, died Monday, February 21, 2000 at the Emergency Room of Community Memorial Hospital.

She was born January 2, 1933 in Winona to Rudolph and Helen (Tarras) Hornberg. She graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1951. She married Roscoe Bittner on July 14, 1951 at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was a member of its Sewing Circle and Ladies Aid.

She worked at the Hillside Fish House for 35 years. She lived in the Winona area her whole life. She was also a leader for Minnesota TOPS #823.

Survivors include her husband, Roscoe; children, Donald (Phyllis) Bittner of Fountain City, Susan Bittner of Winona, and Kenneth (Gail) Bittner, Minnesota City, MN; seven grandchildren, Cory, Kristina, Jay, Craig, David, Neil and Erin; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Tray; and a brother, LaVerne (Mae) Hornberg of Rochester, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Linda Louise, and grandsons, Kristopher and Carl.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 24 at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Ronald Dommer officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be grandsons, Cory Putz, Jay Bittner, Craig Putz, David Bittner, Neil Bittner, and godson, Steve Baures.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Martin-Myhre Funeral Home and on Thursday at the church after 1 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Martin's Lutheran Church Endowment Fund.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
