Skala, Sister Francella
Sister Francella Skala, 86, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, MN, who served in domestic care, died Monday, January 17, 2000 at Assisi Heights, Rochester.

Born Ludmilla Skala on July 8, 1913 in Beaulieu, MN, Sister Francella entered the Franciscan Congregation from Holy Trinity Parish, Litomysl, MN. She made profession of vows in 1937 and began her ministry of domestic care at Saint Mary's Parish, Sleepy Eye, MN. She served on various missions including Winona, Austin, Caledonia and Johnsburg. She also ministered at St. Francis Hospital in Denver, CO, Mercy Hospital, Portsmouth, OH, St. Anne Hospice and the College of Saint Teresa, Winona, Grand Junction, CO and Chicago, IL.

Sister Francella retired to Assisi Heights in 1989, celebrated her diamond jubilee in 1997, and continued to volunteer at Dorothy Day House in Rochester.

Sister Francella is survived by her Franciscan Community and by two brothers, Joseph Skala of Owatonna, MN and Jim Skala of Bagley, MN; and by two sisters, Sister Immolata Skala of Omaha, NE and Agnes Titera of Ladysmith, WI.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, January 20 at the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights with Rev. Jim Buryska officiating.

Malz, Joyce G.
Joyce G. Malz, 82, of St. Anne Hospice, died Tuesday, January 18, 2000 at St. Anne Hospice.

Joyce was born on March 24, 1917 in Rice Lake, WI to Harry and Minnie Wilz Whitney. She taught school for 15 years at Rhinelander, Thorp and Miong, WI., retiring in 1974.

She married George J. Malz on June 25, 1955 in Rice Lake, WI., he preceded her in death in 1985.

Joyce was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona, MN and did volunteer work for Home Delivered Meals and also voluntered at Winona Volunteer Services.

Joyce is survived by a nephew, Michael (Cathy) Kenney, of Morgantown, NC; and four nieces, Kathleen (James) Cognetta, and Margaret (Kenneth) Lang, both of Cottage Grove, MN, Patricia Kenney of White Bear Lake, MN, and Karen (Richard) Etnier of Winona.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and one brother.

Funeral services were Thursday, January 20 in the Chapel of Our Lady at St. Anne Hospice, Father Leland Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Whitney family lot at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Rice Lake, WI on Tuesday, January 25 at 1:00 p.m. There will be a family gathering in the spring at the cemetery to have a commital service, and will be announced at that time.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, is assisting the family with funeral arrangments.

McLeod, John L.
John L. McLeod, 52, Georgetown, TX, died Tuesday, January 18, 2000 at St. David's Medical Center, Austin, TX.

John was born in Winona County on May 20, 1947 to Archie and Mary Luhmann McLeod. He married Elaine Heaser on July 4, 1971 in Winona.

He worked for 26 years for the US Department of Agriculture, and was currently the State Plant Health Director for the State of Texas.

He is a US Air Force veteran.

John is survived by his wife Elaine of Georgetown, TX; two sons, Sean of Nashua, New Hampshire and Scott of Georgetown, TX; an uncle, Donald (Eunice) McLeod of Lewiston, MN; and mother-in-law, Bernice Heaser of Winona.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, January 24 at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, Father Frank Klein officiating. Friends may call at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., where there will be a rosary recited at 6:30 p.m.

Nephews of John will act as casket bearers.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.

A memorial is being arranged.

Bicknese, Lorena
The funeral for Lorena Bicknese was Monday, January 17, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chatfield with Rev. Clark Jaeger officiating. Burial was in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Bicknese, 90, of Chatfield, died Thursday, January 13, 2000 at ChosenValley Care Center in Chatfield.

She was born Lorena Marie Kohlmeyer on June 1, 1909 in Wykoff. On October 26, 1927, she married Edwin A. Bicknese in Wykoff. They moved to Chatfield, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Ladies Aid and Lutheran Women's Missionary League. On January 27, 1997, she moved to Chosen Valley Care Center.

Survivors include her husband, Edwin of Chatfield; a son, Gerald of Chatfield; a daughter, Yvonne (Mrs. Robert) Fix of Winona; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

A sister and a twin brother preceded her in death.

Janikowski, Daniel B.
Daniel B. Janikowski, 94, of Winona, died Thursday, January 20, 2000 at the Watkins Home.

Daniel was born in Winona on January 1, 1906 to Alexander and Nellie B. (Kella) Janikowski.

He married Laverna C. Schmitt on May 25, 1946 in Winona.

Daniel was employed for 17 years at St. Mary's Cemetery and later worked at Winona School District #861 for 20 years, retiring in 1971.

He is survived by Laverna, his wife of 53 years; two brothers, Richard Janikowski and Joseph (Irene) Janikowski, both of Winona; and nieces and nephews.

Daniel was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

A mass of Christian Burial will be offered Sunday, January 23, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Reverend Robert G. Meyer officiating.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.

Friends may call Sunday, at the church from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

Harley and Scott Antoff, and Dave, John, Bob and Tom Wooden will act as pallbearers.

Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

Radsek, Marie Ann
Marie Ann Radsek, 60, of Winona, died Thursday, January 20, 2000 at her home.

Marie was born in La Crosse, WI on May 23, 1939.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on January 25 at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home. Friends may call at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home on Tuesday from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Interment will be at St. John's Cemetery, Nodine, MN.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

CHRIS A. PEDERSON
Chris A. Pederson, 46, of Duluth died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, in his home.
He long suffered from injuries sustained from an assault March of 2000 in Duluth.

Chris was born in Fargo, N.D., and had lived in Brooklyn Park, Minn., Maryland, Florida, New Mexico and Texas.

He joins his deceased parents, Chris LeRoy Pederson and Patricia Ann Ringgold Pederson, with our Father in heaven.

He is survived by his sister, Holly Ann Pederson-Bivin; a brother-in-law, Capt. David G. Bivin; niece and nephew, Anna Christine and Kaare David Bivin-Pederson, all of Duluth; and a brother, Leif R. Pederson of Dallas.

Chris felt blessed by compassionate relationships he had with the medical, law enforcement, city and county staff that helped him respectfully and graciously along his difficult journey. Special friends are Carol, Bob and Cathy, Dick, Mike, Pastor Hamlin, First Lutheran Church, Dr. Trueblood, numerous others, and lifelong friends in Texas.

Chris had a passion for life and a spirit that wouldn't give up "against all odds." Chris, may you rest in peace. All my love, Holly.

MILDRED L. (GRANLUND) DILUCIA
Mildred L. (Granlund) DiLucia, 85, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, in San Diego.
She was born in Duluth and lived there until her move to San Diego in 1965. She worked for the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board, where she established and maintained the library named in her honor.

Survivors include her brother, William Granlund; nephews Gerald (Orel) Spearman, Ronald (Sharon) Spearman and William Carmody, all of San Diego; and a niece, Barbara (John) McQuitty of San Angelo, Texas.
FUNERAL AND BURIAL took place Dec. 12 in San Diego.

Kenneth A. Stromquist
Kenneth A. Stromquist, 41, of South Range died Saturday, April 28, 2001, in his residence.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra; sons Adam and Andrew; a daughter, Heather; his parents Arvid and Evelyn Stromquist; a sister, Becky (Leo) Sapik; and a brother, Robert (Brenda) Stromquist.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Downs Funeral Home, Superior.
