Wieczorek, Wayne (Buddy)
Wayne Wieczorek died suddenly on January 20, 2000 in Webster Grove, Missouri.

He was born April 26, 1932, the odest son of Mary and Isadore Wieczorek. He was a member of the Christian Brothers of De La Salle for many years. He later married Amelia Hernandez.

He is survived by four brothers, James (Joan) of New Brighton, MN, David (Elaine), Larry (Rita) and Thomas (Kris), all of Winona; three sisters, Eileen (Marcel) Schaefer, Dixie (Don) Peshon and Mary Ann (Jack) McDonald, all of Winona.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and sister Margie Peterson.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, January 26 at 10:00 a.m. at Cure' of Ars Church, 670 S. LaClede Station Rd., Webster Grove, Missouri.

McCabe, James W.
Retired Police Chief James W. McCabe, 1801 Edgewood Road, Winona, died March 20, 2000 in Mesa, AZ, at age 89.

He was born January 26, 1911, near Arcadia, WI, to Daniel G. and Susan (Wismolek) McCabe. He spent his early years farming with his family in Wisconsin and trained with the National Guard at Camp McCoy before moving to Winona from Alma, WI, in 1932. He married Mildred K. Von Wald of Alma on June 24, 1936, and moved to Red Wing, MN.

Prior to joining the Winona Police Department in 1942, he was a steelworker and foreman on the locks and dams at Trempealeau, WI; Red Wing, MN; and Clarksville, MO. He also was a WPA foreman for the construction of the Hokah City Hall, the disposal plant at LaCrescent, and the curbs and gutters in St. Charles, Spring Grove and Tracy, MN. In addition, he was WPA superintendent on a dam and bridge project near Rollingstone. Since 1979 he and his wife have spent the winters at Venture Out in Mesa, AZ.

Before being appointed Chief of Police on January 14, 1964, he served as patrolman, detective, motorcycle sergeant and captain. He graduated from numerous police schools, including civil defense, FBI, advanced first aid, small-craft water safety, crime, drug interdiction, and Traffic School and Supervision of Police Personnel at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.

He was a member of the International Chiefs of Police Association, the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers' Association, and the SE Minnesota Police & Peace Officers' Association, having served as its president in 1966. He served on the Governor's Commission on Crime Prevention and Control as chairman of the committee on Conviction, Sentencing, and Rehabilitation, and also was on the Grants Committee in Region F, which is composed of 20 counties in southeastern Minnesota. On March 26, 1958, he received a commendation from FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover for his efforts in connection with the apprehension in Winona of Donald F. Gratz, a bogus check artist, who was on the FBI's list of the Ten Most Wanted Men.

He was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Parish and the Knights of Columbus, having served as Faithful Navigator of the Bishop Francis Kelly Fourth Degree in 1967-68, and was Past Grand Knight of Winona Council No. 639. He also was club advisor for the Drag-On Automobile Club and a member of the Elks, the Redmen, the Winona Athletic Club and UCT.

His interests and hobbies were sports, travel, boating, reading, and current events.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred; daughter, Inez (Dan) McGee of Sun Lakes, AZ; grandson, Dan L. Jr.; and great-granddaughter, Morgan Hart MGee of Nampa, ID; one brother, Donald (Virginia) of Sierra Vista, AZ; and one sister, Evelyn (Wendell) Brown of Wataga, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Laverne (Mae), Merrill (Evelyn), and Gerald, and two sisters, Thelma (Andrew) Mueller and Arlene (Hugh) Boyd.

Visitation will be Monday, March 27, from 5-8 p.m. at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday after 12 noon at the funeral home where preliminary prayers will be said at 12:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be March 28 at 1 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart with Msgr. Roy Literski and Father Michael Cronin officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be retired policemen Carl Bambenek, Richard Braithwaite, Joseph Bronk, Paul Kapustik, Ray Kauphusman, and Lyle Lattman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Berg of Tucson, AZ; Carl Fisher, Winona; Edward Hittner, Alamo, TX; Ed Johnson, Richfield, MN; Wendell Lewis, Britton, SD; and Roy Nelson, Winona.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to the James W. McCabe Memorial Fund, which will be used to establish a scholarship for students pursuing a career in law enforcement.

Schulte, Sister Leontius
Sister Leontius Schulte, 98, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, MN, who served as a professor of mathematics, died Monday, March 20, 2000 at Assisi Heights, Rochester.

Born Catherine Mary Schulte on September 4, 1901 in Cleveland, WI, Sister Leontius entered the Franciscan Congregation in 1926 from Saint Wendel Parish, Cleveland. She made profession of vows in 1927 and began her teaching ministry at Saint John Parish, Caledonia, MN.

Sister Leontius began her teaching career at the College of Saint Teresa, Winona, in 1928 and served as chairman and professor of mathematics at the college. Her teaching career covered almost every area of the mathematics curriculum, but specialized eventually in geometry, number theory and areas related to teacher education. Her contributions to the professional field of mathematics education have included curriculum design for elementary, secondary and college programs, as well as consulting and advising commercial publishers. In the early 1960's, Sister Leontius was both the chief designer and teacher in a series of 19 films on the new math presented over KROC-TV, channel 10, Rochester. She was director of the National Science Foundation Institutes and Conferences for teachers of elementary mathematics and worked to establish a model laboratory for in-service work for Winona-area teachers.

An alumna of the college, Sister Leontius earned her master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She retired from teaching, came to Assisi Heights in 1979 and celebrated her diamond jubilee in 1987.

Sister Leontius is survived by her Franciscan community.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, March 24 at the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights, with Rev. Jack Krough officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

McGuire, Daniel Roy
Daniel Roy McGuire, 41, Grand Junction, IA, died Monday, March 20, 2000 in a Des Moines, IA hospital.

A memorial service was held Friday, March 24 in Grand Junction. A Mass is tentatively scheduled for 12:10 p.m. April 19 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Winona.

Denzer, Dale Albert
Dale Albert Denzer, 82, died Friday, February 25, 2000 at his home in Minnesota City, MN, after a long courageous battle with cancer. He died surrounded by his loving family.
Dale was born July 29, 1917 in Minnesota City to John C. and Esther B. (Whetstone) Denzer. He married his beloved wife, Jacqueline "Jackie" Hamernik-Bingold on July 15, 1967 in Winona.

He farmed in Minnesota City and in 1940, bought a panel truck from Federal Bakery which he converted into a school bus and started the first Minnesota City School Bus Company. He later was self-employed as a masonary-carpenter.

He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Parish in Minnesota City and a 30-year member of his card club.

He is survived by his wife, Jackie; two sons, Eric (Wendy) Denzer, Winona and Greg Bingold, Minnesota City; four daughters, Chris (Dave) Roberton, Minnesota City, Tami (Elmer) Nesbit, Minnesota City, Dana (Steve) Jabs, White Bear Lake, MN, and Gina (Mike) McRae, Winona; grandchildren: Dan and Stephanie Roberton, Chelsea Nesbit, Lans Bingold, Josh, Kristie, Lee and Ryan Johnson, Nikki, Seth and Scott McRae and Tyffanie Denzer; a great-grandchild, Jada Johnson; three brothers, George (Gloria) Denzer, Ray (Lola) Denzer and Neil (Claira) Denzer, all of Minnesota City; a sister, Buelah Diekman, Scotia, NY; many nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Alma Hamernik; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Rodney (Mary Lou) Pellowski and Alanson (Marci) Hamernik of Winona and Marty (Less) Nunemaker, Apple Valley, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Orville, Alvin, Oak and Gene Denzer, and grandchild, Thaddeus Denzer.

Funeral services were Monday, February 28 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Minnesota City with Rev. Edward Cunningham OMI officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Minnesota City.

Pallbearers were his grandchildren.

Every available free moment you could find Dale working in his garden or delivering cucumbers to all his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all.

Memorials are preferred.

Bambenek, James A.
James A. Bambenek, 81, 429-1/2 Mankato Avenue, died peacefully on Saturday, February 26, 2000, at age 81.

He was born in Winona to Theodore and Agnes (Rogalla) Bambenek on September 14, 1918. He and Eleanor Ida Roedeske were married on May 24, 1944. They had two sons.

He and his brother Ted owned and operated Bambenek's Market and Hardware on Mankato Avenue. He also played piano with several area bands and continued to entertain friends and family with his musical ability.

Grandpa loved following the exploits and adventures of his granddaughters. They were the light of his life and they will miss him. He took great pleasure in golf, music, sports, humor, classic movies and the world of business.

James is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eleanor; two sons, James M. (Nancy Jordan) of Winona and Thomas G. (Kathy Downey) of David, FL; a brother, Theodore of Winona; and three granddaughters, Catherine Wenonah of Minneapolis; Liza Therese, Brooklyn, NY, and Bridget Nicole, David, FL

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Maxine Schubring, and three infant children.

Pallbearers are Dan Sullivan. R. Peter Roehl, Dennis Neville, Bill Wieczorek, Bill Glowczewski and Jerry Borzyskowski.

Honorary pallbearers are Trina, Liza and Bridget Bambenek, Jerry Rozek, Harold Libera, Frank Kolter, George Vondrashek, Len Bernatz, Augie Karcher and Charlie Linden.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 1 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with Rev. Paul Breza and Rev. Robert G. Meyer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9.

Preliminary services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home.

The family requests no flowers. Memorials can be directed to Winona Cotter High School or the Polish Museum.
