Hohmann, Leonard August

Leonard August Hohmann, 80, of Luck, Wis., and formerly of Winona and Arcadia, Wis., died Thursday, January 11, 2001 at the United Pioneer Home in Luck.

Leonard was born in Arcadia, Wis., on September 12, 1920, the son of Stella (Arduser) and John Hohmann.

Leonard served from 1942-1945 during World War II with the U.S. Coast Guard as a Pharmacist's Mate, First Class. He married Priscilla Nelson of Altura, Minn. They had a son, Daniel and a daughter, Judith.

Following the war, he began his lifelong career with the U.S. Corps of Engineers as a lockman at the Genoa, Wis. Lock & Dam. He finished his career at Whitman Lock & Dam #5, based out of Winona. He lived in Winona until 1996 when he moved to Hayward, Wis., and then to Luck, Wis., where he resided for the past year and a half.

He married Virginia L. Wojan on July 19, 1951 in Arcadia, Wis. They had a daughter, Georgia. Virginia died on October 3, 1986.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and former member of Central Lutheran Church, both of Winona. He enjoyed caring for his lawn and gardening, especially raising roses. He also loved to hunt and fish.

He is survived by his son, Daniel (JoAnn) Hohmann of Altura, Minn.; two daughters, Georgia (Gary) Frye of Hayward, Wis. and Judith Stromgren of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brothers, Abner and Donovan.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 15, at Faith Lutheran Church in Winona, with Rev. Mark Dumke officiating. Interment will be in Glencoe Lutheran Cemetery, Arcadia, Wis.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. Monday at the church.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements.

Smith, Myron Edward

Myron Edward Smith, 77, died of cancer on Friday, January 12, 2001 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, Wis.

He was born November 20, 1923 in Elmore, Minn., to Ralph and Mae (Gately) Smith. He married Judith Johnson on March 22, 1947.

Smitty attended Mankato State University in 1941. In 1943 he joined the Naval Air Corps and received his fighter pilot wings at Corpus Christi, Tex. After the war he returned to Mankato, graduated in 1947, and went on to receive his Masters degree from Colorado State in 1954. He taught and coached in the public schools at Springfield, Minn., Nicollet, Minn., and Red Wing, Minn. In 1967 he moved to Winona and taught at Winona State University where he also coached football and track, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Winona, Westfield Golf Club, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Sunrisers and past Exalted Ruler of the Red Wing Elks. He was inducted into the U of M Mankato Athletic Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife, Judith; three sons, Myron Jr. of Hollywood, Fla., Jamie (Susan) of Winona and Dave (Siri)of Dallas, Tex.; six grandchildren, Luke, Karin, Melody (Lockwood), Ben, Meredith and Jordan; two step-grandchildren, Alisha (Sievers) and Graham (Sievers); one great-grandchild, Andrew (Lockwood); two sisters, Beverly Wiblemoe and Marilyn Smith; and two brothers, Myrl and Jim.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday at Martin-Myhre Funeral Home and from 11 a.m. until time of Mass on Monday at the church.

Casketbearers will be John Martin, Stan Prosen, Dennis Cleveland, Lloyd Walters, Jim Carlson, Don Bauer, Jack Critchfield and Joe Kowalsky.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.

Tibor, Robert F.

Robert F. Tibor, 88, Altura, Minn., died Friday, March 2, 2001 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

He was born December 10, 1912 in Kellogg, Minn., the son of John and Delia (Tentis) Tibor. He married Rita Joan Schmidt on February 3, 1937 at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha, Minn.

Together they farmed in the Kellogg area and later on Oak Ridge and in Mount Vernon Township of Winona County. They retired in 1981 and moved to Altura.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Altura.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Tibor of Altura; daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Hal Worthington of Tehachapi, Cal., and Geralyn LaRocque of Lewiston, Minn.; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Carol Tibor of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Lloyd "Bud" and Judy Tibor of Minneiska, Minn., John and Barbara Tibor of Winona, and Thomas and Marie Tibor of Minnesota City, Minn.; thirteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marcella Tibor of Lake City, Minn.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Margaret Lamey and Viola Hager and brothers, George and Clarence Tibor.

A Funeral Mass was offered Tuesday, March 6 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Altura with Rev. Peter Schuster officiating. Interment was in St. Agnes Cemetery, Kellogg, Minn.

Casketbearers were his grandchildren.

The Abbott Funeral Home of Wabasha was in charge of arrangements.

Klink, Clara E.

Clara E. Klink, 92, formerly of Arcadia, Wis., died Saturday, March 3, 2001 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital.

She was the eldest of 11 children, born December 15, 1908 in North Creek, Wis., to Joseph and Mary (Sonsalla) Sobotta. She married Edward T. Klink on November 20, 1928. He died December 10, 1985.

Clara and her husband farmed in the Arcadia area in their early years of marriage and later in Dodge, Wis. They later owned and operated the Sportsmans Bar in Arcadia for many years where they had the largest wildlife display in the Midwest. Visitors would drive miles to come and see Ed & Clara and their display. Clara also ran a little grill in the bar known as "Clara's Kitchen." She served many repeat customers with her delicious sandwiches and homemade chili. When she retired, Clara moved to Winona where she lived at Winhaven Court for a number of years. Most recently she was a resident of the C&R Unit at Winona Community Memorial Hospital.

Clara was a life member of the St. Stanislaus Rosary Society in Arcadia. She attended St. Stanislaus Kostka Church and enjoyed listening and singing along with the Polish choir. She enjoyed going to bingo with her sisters and she was always happy to meet her friends that came from Arcadia. The last weeks had been very difficult for Clara and now she will enjoy eternal rest.

She will be lovingly missed by her family that survive her: three daughters, Patricia (Harlan) Pronschinske of Bluff Siding, Wis., Jeanette (Franklin) Pronschinske of Winona, and Carol (Allen) Kube of Cochrane, Wis.; three grandchildren, Cheryl (Robert) Gonia of Winona, Carla (Steve) Radsek of Mondovi, Wis., and Jay E. Pronschinske of Winona; three great-grandchildren, Katherine (James) Christopherson of Winona and Jacinda and Jaron Radsek; two sisters, Irene Bambenek and Adeline Neubauer, both of Winona; and two brothers, Evarist (Pat) Sobotta of Bluff Siding and Marcel (Ethel) Sobotta of Onalaska, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers and a sister.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Tuesday, March 6 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona with Rev. Daniel R. Dernek officiating. Burial was in St. Stanislaus Church Cemetery in Arcadia.

A memorial is being arranged.

Mahlke, Nina Pauline

Nina Pauline Mahlke, 93, of 1347 West Broadway and formerly of 1227 West Fifth St., Winona, died Sunday, March 4, 2001 at St. Anne Hospice, Winona.

Nina was born in Buxton, Iowa, on February 24, 1908, the daughter of Ida Benedicta (Anderson) and John August Nelson. The family lived in Buxton and Hiteman, Iowa and Little Falls, Minn. After moving to Winona at age 17, she worked at Winona Knitting Mills, J.R. Watkins and McConnons. She also managed the Pantry Store for Robb Brothers. She married Ernest Carl Mahlke on March 19, 1932 in Minneapolis, Minn. Following their marriage, Nina was a devoted caregiver for her family, whom she dearly loved. Her husband, Ernest, died August 13, 1973.

Nina was a member of St. Matthew's Ev. Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aide, Bible Circle, Sewing Circle and Circle 4.

She is survived by two sons, David A. (Jackie) Mahlke of Winona and Carl E. (Kathleen) Mahlke of Holmen, Wis.; two daughters, Sandra Tschida of Rochester, Minn. and Judith Miller of Fairmont, Minn.; six grandchildren, David (Amy) Mahlke II, Thomas (Julie) Mahlke, Jane (Craig) ) Olson, Anthony (Melanie) Tschida, Jr., Peter Miller and Benjamin Mahlke; and four great-grandchildren, Katherine Mahlke, David Mahlke III, and Jennifer and Robert Olson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers, four sisters, and two sons-in-law, Anthony Tschida and John Miller.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 6 at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Oliver H. Lindholm and James D. Nelson officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were Nina's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial is being arranged.

Runningen, Glen O.

Glenn O. Runningen, 80, of Houston, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Franciscan ­ Skemp Health Care in LaCrosse, WI.

He was born on September 26, 1920, in Mound Prairie Township of Houston County to Carl and Josie (Jorde) Runningen. Glenn grew up in Mound Prairie Township. He married Harriet Schild on September 15, 1944.

Glenn worked at Swift Company in LaCrosse for many years.

He was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston and was previously a member of South Ridge United Methodist Church in rural LaCrescent, MN.

His interests included playing softball, bowling, golfing, and playing cards.

He is survived by three sons: Thomas Runningen of Bemidji, MN, Paul (Pamela) Runningen of Houston, MN, and Timothy (Rebecca) Runningen of LaCrescent, MN; one daughter: Joan (Warren) Munson of Fort Worth, TX; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother Reginald Runningen of Colorado Springs, CO; three sisters: Judith (Sherman) Anderson of Houston, Lylah (David) Alman of Laguna Beach, CA, and Gladys (Glenn) Mieners of Caledonia, MN; and a very special friend Henrietta Nelson of Houston.

Glenn was preceded in death by his wife Harriet.

The funeral service was Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery in rural LaCrescent.

Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Houston Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.

Wooden, Seraphine F.

Seraphine F. Wooden, 93, formerly of 968 East Broadway, died Sunday, March 4, 2001 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital.

Seraphine was born October 6, 1907 in Winona, to Martin and Augusta (Stanislawski) Gora. She married John F. Wooden on October 22, 1929, in Sacred Heart Church, Pine Creek, Wis. He died March 4, 1985.

Seraphine was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Parish.

Survivors include two sons, John Paul (Mary) of Adrian, Mich., and Kenneth (Janice) of Winona; one grandson, Christopher Wooden; five granddaughters, Charna and Sarah Wooden, Sandra Lynnhamer and Julia and Kelly Wooden; one great-granddaughter; and two great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a granddaughter, Debbie, four brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 8, at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home with Rev. Shawn T. Haremza officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9-10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
