Bork, Clara D.

Clara D. Bork, 83, Fountain City, Wis., died Monday, March 19, 2001 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 13, 1917 in Buffalo County, to Bernard F. and Della C. (Sikorski) Mertes. She married Henry A. Bork on October 24, 1933 in St. Joseph's Church, Winona. He died September 17, 1992.

Clara was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Parish and its Altar Society in Fountain City.

Survivors include three sons, Eugene (Rosalie) and David (Irene), both of Fountain City and Donald (Grace) of Galesville, Wis.; two daughters, Jane (Eugene) Dzwonkowski and Rita (Donald) Fort, both of Fountain City; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Eleanor Kolbe of Black River Falls, Wis., Florence (Titus) Kupietz of Pine Creek, Wis., and Patricia Hund of Fountain City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, Phyllis, two sisters, Elaine and Virginia, and a brother, Lawrence.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday, March 22, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fountain City, with Rev. Douglas C. Robertson officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fountain City in the spring.

Friends may call Wednesday from 3-8 p.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home with a parish rosary led by Bernice Semling at 7 p.m. Friends may also call Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of the Mass at the church.

Pallbearers will be Clara's grandchildren.

Goergen, Ruth M.

Ruth M. Goergen, 81, of 1190 Highway 43, Winona, died Monday, March 19, 2001 at her home.

She was born October 8, 1919 in Winona to Carl and Elizabeth (Hilbe) Goetzman. She married Clarence M. Goergen on October 8, 1938.

She was employed by Winona Printing Co. for 20 years prior to retirement.

She was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Parish.

Survivors include five children: Mary (Jon) Mullen of Winona, Stephen (Sherri) Goergen of Rochester, Minn., Bernard (Vicky) Goergen of Fountain City, Wis., Martha (John) Korupp of Peterson, Minn., and Beth (Mark) Parma of Rollingstone, Minn.; twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Carpenter of Wabasha, Minn. and Irene Gallagher of St. Petersburg, Fla.; nieces and nephews; and a special neighbor, Gay Miranda.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Judy, one brother, four sisters and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 22 at 4 p.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home with Rev. John M. Sauer officiating. Friends may call Thursday from 2:30 p.m. until time of the service at the funeral home.

Grover Mabel F.

Mabel F. Grover, 88, of Rushford, Minn., died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.

She was born on August 19, 1912, in LaCrosse, Wis. to Carl and Bertha (Harm) Kriese. Mabel grew up in LaCrosse, graduated from LaCrosse Central High School and attended nursing school in LaCrosse. She married George Grover on June 24, 1932, in LaCrosse.

Following her marriage Mabel and George moved to Rushford, Minn. where Mabel lived the remainder of her life.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Hobby Club in Rushford. Mabel was an avid reader, loved caring for her home, and was a very nurturing grandmother and great grandmother.

She is survived by two sons: Jerry (Diane) Grover of Rushford, and Don (Verna) Grover of Taylors Falls, Minn.; seven grandchildren: Michael, Joan, Becky, Barb, Karen, Bill, and Deborah; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ethel Frey of Arizona; one sister-in-law, Adeline Kriese of LaCrosse; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 1 great-granddaughter, one brother, Jule and one sister, Dorothy.

The funeral service was on Tuesday, March 20, at the First Presbyterian Church in Rushford with the Rev. Robert Drier officiating. Burial was in the Oak Grove City Cemetery in Rushford.

The family prefers memorials to the First Presbyterian Church.

Drake, Stanley Warren

Stanley Warren Drake, 81, St. Clair, Minn., died Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona. He had recently moved to Winona to receive care at St. Anne Hospice.

Stan was born January 19, 1920, to Merton and Mary (Delaney) Drake in St. Paul, Minn. After his mother's death in 1922, he and his two sisters were placed in the Minnesota State School/Orphanage in Owatonna, Minn. (1923-1931). As a ward of the state, he attended country school and worked for families in the Waseca area from 1931-1939.

Enlisting in the army in 1939, he served three years as surgical technician in Panama. In 1944, a bulletin was issued by President Roosevelt asking for volunteers with previous jungle service to undertake an unspecified "dangerous and hazardous mission." Stan was one of the 3, 000 volunteers who became known as Merrill's Marauders and later Mars Task Force serving in the China-Burma-India Theater. In 1945, after receiving an honorable discharge as Tech 3rd Gr. Med Det 2nd BN 475th Inf, he was awarded several medals, including the Purple Heart, and one from each of the three Asian countries in which the 475th infantry had fought.

On June 16, 1947, he married Jeanette Nyquist at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in St. Clair.

After completing the two-year automotive program at Dunwoody Institute (1945-47), he purchased and operated St. Clair Service for forty years, retiring in 1988 to enjoy fishing, golf and bowling.

He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #475, and a lifetime member of Merrill's Marauders Association, Ranger Regiment Association, China-Burma-India Veterans Association and Muskies, Inc.

Stan is survived by his wife; two sons and their wives, Scott and Sue of Chaska, Minn. and Michael and Vonna of Hebron, KY; one daughter, Nancy, and her husband Dwight Nelson of Winona; five grandchildren, Cory, Sarina and Aaron Drake and Eric (fiancee Stacey Sadowski) and Sara Nelson; two sisters, Marion Stein of Wilmette, Ill. and Doris McFarlin and her husband, Sherman, of Vadnais Heights, Minn.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Dean and Ruth Nyquist of St. Clair; four nieces; one nephew; and his foster family, Margaret and her late husband Bill Myers and their children, Wallace, Beverly Born and Ivadell Hunter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Kelli Jean Drake, and a niece, Rosemary McFarlin Rosenquist.

A private memorial service was held Thursday, March 1, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral home with Rev. Mary Hurmence of Central United Methodist Church officiating. Military honors were provided by the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9, Winona.

Honorary pallbearers were all of Stanley's grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Anne Hospice or American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9.

Peterson, Inez Sylvia

Inez Sylvia Peterson, 92, of 150 Pleasant Hill Drive, Winona, died Wednesday, February 28, 2001 at Community Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were Saturday, March 3, at Highland Lutheran Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Matthees, Edward Henry

Edward Henry Matthees, 99, of 1635 Service Drive, Winona, and formerly of Route 1, Minnesota City, Minn., died Sunday, February 25, 2001 at the Sauer Memorial Home, Winona.

Edward was born on August 2, 1901 in Winona County, Minn., the son of Linda (Matzke) and William Matthees. He married Dora Adele Gensmer on July 15, 1926 in Norton Township, Minn. They owned and operated a dairy operation.

He is survived by a son, Gordon (Sandra) Matthees of Goodview, Minn.; a daughter, JoAnn Nichols of Goodview; two daughters-in-law, Janette Matthees and Sharon Matthees, both of Rollingstone, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Lance Matthees, Rock Matthees, Tamara Matthees and her husband Randy Galewski, Linda (Keith) Stachowitz, Mona Du Bois, Penny (Charles) Ainsworh, Aaron (Mary Lou) Miller, Tim (Stacey) Matthees, and Melanie (Dan) Heim; six great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Herbert Gensmer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora; sons, Eldor and Edward and a son in infancy, a son-in-law, Boyd Nichols, two brothers, Elmer and Ben, and a sister, Hilda Gensmer.

Funeral services were Wednesday, February 28, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home with Rev. David Eckert of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Norton Township officiating. Interment was in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Norton Township.

Pallbearers were Lance and Rock Matthees, Randy Galewski, Dan Heim, and Hilbert and Donald Gensmer.

A memorial is being arranged.

Maki, Eino Adolph

Eino Adolph Maki, 84, formerly of Winona, died Monday, February 26, 2001 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home, Rushford, Minn.

He was born August 9, 1916, in Virginia, Minn., to Aleksis "Alex" and Maria (Pokkyla) Maki. He attended Roosevelt High School, and at the age of 16 joined the CCC program, working in the Ely area. Eino was a World War II veteran of the Navy. On January 27, 1944, he married Anne Marie Nurmi in Brooklyn, NY. She died March 27, 1999.

After the war ended, Eino attended RCA Institute NYC and received a degree in radio, television, and telephone communications. In 1946, he was hired by the New York Telephone Company, as a switchman. He later became a Bell Laboratory design team engineer, and his department was involved in implementing and perfecting the technology of "direct dialing."

During this time, Eino and Anne lived in Staten Island, where they raised their family. Eino coached Little League baseball, and enjoyed many years as a Boy Scout troop leader. He also bowled for the NY Telephone League.

In 1977, Eino and Anne retired to Duluth, where they also spent time at their cabin on Island Lake. Eino was always happy to have family and friends come for coffee and sauna. He was an avid sports fan, liked pitching horseshoes, and fishing for walleye. He was proud of his Finnish heritage, and devoted to his family. Eino will be remembered as a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who enjoyed spending time with family. He was especially proud of his grandchildren.

They moved to Winona in 1991. In 1998 Eino joined the Good Shepherd family, and was always seen wearing a baseball cap, and enjoying the activities.

At this time, the Maki family would like to thank the Good Shepherd nurses and staff for the wonderful care that Eino received. Our heartfelt thanks for your support, caring and hugs, also.

Survivors include a daughter, Marylin (Lyle) Kiral of Lewiston, Minn.; a son, William (Linda) Maki of Montvale, NJ: five grandchildren, Jennifer (Shawn) Becker of Hutchinson, Tom Kiral of Lewiston, and William (fiance Katrina Dainty), Christopher and Melissa Maki, all of Montvale; one great-granddaughter, Mikenna Anne Becker; three sisters, Ermi (Sulo) Ronback of Duluth, Nellie Maki of Thousand Oaks, Cal., and Ethel (Martin) Hudson of Virginia; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Besides his parents, Eino was preceded in death by his wife, Anne, and brothers, Edi, Walter, Edward, Bruno and Victor.

Funeral services were Thursday, March 1 at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wade E. Davick officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family respectfully requests that memorials be directed to the Good Shepherd Activities Department.
