Ulbrech, Helen F.

Helen F. Ulbrech, 96, formerly of Pine Creek, Wis., died Friday, March 23, 2001 at St. Gertrude's Nursing Home in Shakopee, Minn.

She was born February 1, 1905 in Trempealeau, Wis. on Pine Creek Ridge, to Stanley and Mary (Weier) Losinski.

Helen graduated from Arcadia High School and taught at the Brezinski School. After a brief stint in nursing at the University of Minnesota, she returned to Winona State. In succeeding years she taught at Norway Coulee, Pine Bluff in Dane County and Centerville. She married Roy Ulbrech in April of 1940 and they farmed together until his death on August 11, 1970.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Zigmund, Edmund, Theodore and Lawrence, and three sisters, Blanche Losinski, Stella Kukowski and Gladys Schank.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday, March 26 at Sacred Heart Church in Pine Creek with Rev. Robert Polcyn officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bill and Tim Gores, Tim and Todd Schank, Michael Leahy, David Dorsher and Tom Kukowski.

Konkel, Theodore Dominic

Theodore "Ted" Konkel, 83, of Centerville, WI, died Thursday, March 22, 2001 at the Marinuka Manor in Galesville, WI.

He was born on October 23, 1917 in Dodge, WI to Aloysius and Frances (Pelowski) Konkel. On February 3, 1951, Ted married Eileen Schwartz at Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Arcadia, WI.

Ted farmed and lived in Bear Coulee in Trempealeau, WI for 40 years. When he retired, he and Eileen moved to their home in Centerville.

Ted is survived by his wife, Eileen, of Centerville, WI; five children, Ted Jr. (Hope) Konkel of Trempealeau, Joyce (Russ) Harris of Trempealeau, Sue (John) Rombalski of Galesville, Betty (Steve) Scow of Arcadia, and Kathy (Tim) Trim of Galesville; fourteen grandchildren, Joshua Harris, Kiley Anderson, Jacob Harris, Heidi Spittler (Ron), Chad Scow, Malissa Scow, Justin Scow, Timothy Konkel, Jordan Trim, Katilyn Trim, Kyle Konkel, Chelsey Konkel, Megan Konkel, Ashley Konkel, and Jennifer Konkel; two great-grandchildren, Mara Harris, and Kaylee Spittler; and a step-great-grandchild, Jay Spittler

Preceding Ted in death was his daughter, Maxine; son, Robert; his parents; three brothers, a sister; and two grandchildren, Bridget Rombalski and Brandon Trim.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, March 26, at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Trempealeau with Fr. Robert Wagner officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Arcadia.

Serving as casketbearers were Joshua and Jacob Harris, Chad and Justin Scow, Timothy Konkel, Kyle Konkel, and Jordan Trim.

Honorable bearers were Ted's godchildren, Dorothy Slaby, Delores Neitzel, Cathy Kulig, Sherry Wollin, Donald Konkel, and Kevin Schwartz.

Ted's family respectfully ask that memorials be directed to "family wishes".

Wozney Funeral Home, Arcadia, Wis. assisted with arrangements.

Bagniewski, Alois F.

Alois F. Bagniewski, 85, of Fountain City, Wis. died Sunday, March 25, 2001 at St. Michael's Lutheran Home in Fountain City.

He was born in Trempealeau County, Wis. on July 27, 1915 to John J. and Marie M. Balzer Bagniewski. On May 28, 1942 he married Marion W. Pape in Fountain City.

Alois farmed for many years in Milton Township of Buffalo County, retiring in 1977.

He is a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fountain City, where he served as an altar boy from a young age until his health would no longer permit him to do so in his later years. He was also a Eucharistic minister for over 30 years at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He is a past member of the Holy Name Society.

Alois is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Marion; a son, Rodney (Karen) Bagniewski of Fountain City; daughters, Kathleen (Ronald) Northrup of Goodview, Minn. and Della (Randall) Sherman of Peoria, Ill.; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; fourteen step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond (Mercille) Bagniewski of Waumandee, Wis. and Eugene (Lucille) Bagniewski of Fountain City; and two sisters, Alice Wollman of Casa Grande, Ariz. and Margaret (Robert) Wera of Winona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a son-in-law, Ronald Lunde.

Preliminary services will be on Wednesday, March 28 at 10:30 a.m. at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Fountain City, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Douglas Robertson officiating.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Casketbearers are Todd and Matthew Bagniewski, Mark Edwards, Charles Devine, Darrin Brand and Robert Abts.

Honorary bearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial gifts may be directed to St. Michael's Lutheran Home or to Fountain City First Responders.

Spring interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fountain City.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Fountain City is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

Kinowski, Dr. Diane

Dr. Diane Kinowski, 49, Crystal Falls, Mich., formerly of Winona, died Saturday, March 24, 2001 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 29 at United Lutheran Church in Crystal Falls. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Crystal Falls.

Degallier, Peggy Joyce

Peggy Joyce Degallier, 46, of 816 East Sanborn St., died Monday, March 26, 2001 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29 at Living Light Church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, with a prayer service beginning at 5 p.m.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Molstein, Arthur A.

Arthur A. Molstein, 81, of Rushford, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.

Arthur was born on August 5, 1919, at North Prairie of Fillmore County to Andrew and Andrea (Gilbertson) Molstein.

He grew up at North Prairie and graduated from Lanesboro High School in 1937. He attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. Arthur returned to the family farm, farming with his parents for many years. Eventually he ran the farm on his own and lived there until moving to Rushford in 1998.

Arthur was a member of the North Prairie Lutheran Church, the church choir, and the Rochester Male Chorus. He was a director on the Good Shepherd Lutheran Foundation Board in Rushford and was on the Board for the Fillmore County Historical Society.

Arthur is survived by one brother: Gilbert Molstein of Portland, Oregon; one sister Mary Ann Hamann of Fountain, Minn.; six nephews: David, Mark, Paul, Daniel, James, and John Hamann; and two nieces: Mary Beth Sedgwick and Andrea Carlson.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral service will be at 1:00 pm on Wednesday at North Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro with the Rev. Victor Jortack officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Werner, James William

James William Werner, a retired secondary school teacher, died at his home in Upland on Thursday, March 22, 2001. He was 72. He was the son of George James Werner and Linnea P. Larson Werner.

He was born June 13, 1928 in Winona. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany as a cryptographer after having received his BS degree at Winona State Teachers' College ion 1949. He received an MA from the University of Minnesota in 1956 and then moved to Pomona where he taught Spanish and English in the Pomona Unified School District until his retirement in 1986. He subsequently received another MA from UC Riverside in 1969 and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature in 1977.

During his retirement he was actively involved in archeological digs at various sites and was a volunteer at the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Claremont. He was an avid gardener and traveler.

He is survived by his sister, Caryl Graham of Prescott, Ariz.; his niece, Julia Graham of Elk River, Cal.; and his nephew, Mark Graham of Elgin, Tex.

Graveside services will be held in the Witoka Cemetery, Witoka, Minn. on Saturday, March 31 at 2:30 p.m., with Pastor Gwen Bohlke officiating.

It is suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Claremont, Cal.

Todd Memorial Chapel, Pomona, and Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona are in charge of arrangements.

Dotterwick, Alice A.

Alice A. Dotterwick, 87, formerly of Winona, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz.

She was born September 5, 1913 in Winona, to Felix and Julia (Cierzan) Janikowski. She married Henry J. Dotterwick on September 16, 1941 in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. He died August 8, 1999.

For many years, Alice worked with her husband at the Winona Dental Lab, retiring in 1964. She enjoyed retirement to its fullest, golfing, dancing with her favorite partner, Hank, playing bridge, volunteering as a "Pink Lady" and traveling to visit her daughters and grandchildren.

Alice was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish, Westfield Golf Club, Winona Hospital Auxiliary and the Polish Heritage Society.

She is survived by two daughters, Jeanne (Dan) Joyce and Judy (Hubert) Helland, both of Surprise, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer and Kevin Joyce, B.J. Helland, Patrick (Kara), Paul, Peter and Tom Kleinschmidt; their father, Michael; great-grandson, Brian Kleinschmidt; two sisters, Bernadine (Val) Modjeski and Josephine (Cecil) Bennett; and three brothers, Lawrence (Eleanor), John (Isabelle) and Edward (Marian) Janikowski.

Alice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hank, her parents and brother, Phil.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with Rev. Daniel R. Dernek officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.

Pallbearers will be her six grandsons.

Memorials may be given to St. Stanislaus Church, Community Memorial Hospital, or to the donor's choice.
