Hardy, Frank Willis

Frank Willis Hardy, 75, of 1635 Service Drive, Winona, died Monday, March 26, 2001 at the Sauer Memorial Home, Winona.

Frank was born on October 30, 1925 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Imogene (Leslie) and Frank Willis Hardy. He graduated from Austin High School, Austin, Minn. in 1943. He married Vivian Louise Scholz on May 14, 1947 in Winona.

He was a tool and die maker from 1947 until 1980 in Detroit, Mich. He retired and moved to Winona in 1982.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian; two sons, David of Rushford, Minn. and Rick (Kim) of Pickwick, Minn.; and three grandchildren, Lynn Marie Liedel, Kimberly Rae Hardy and Benjamin Todd Hardy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Daniel.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 29, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home with Rev. Timothy Dost of St. Martin's Ev. Lutheran Church officiating.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements.

Stanislawski, George J.

George J. Stanislawski, 88, of 812 Loras Lane, McAllen, Tex., died Monday, March 26, 2001 in Life Care Hospital of South Texas.

He was born October 11, 1912 in Winona, to Damazy and Mary (Styba) Stanislawski. He married Marian E. Bandar on September 2, 1939 in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Winona.

George was employed by the U.S. Government as an auditor and Administrative Manager for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #37, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Nikki Rowe Post of McAllen, Tex., Elk's Lodge #327 of Winona, and the Knights of Columbus Council #639, Winona. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish.

He served in the U.S. Army, Infantry Division during World War II. He served in Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland and was decorated with the European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Ribbon and the American Theater Service Ribbon.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Marian of McAllen, Tex.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Henry, and a sister, Sarah Kluzik.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday, March 29 at 11 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with preliminary services at 10:30 a.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home with Rev. Daniel R. Dernek officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.

Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home with a Christian Wake Service at 8 p.m.

Members of the American Legion will serve as pallbearers and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will provide military honors at the cemetery.

Foster, Thomas D.

Thomas D. Foster, 91, of the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital, and formerly of 1054 West King St., died Tuesday, March 20, 2001.

He was born June 9, 1909 in Fountain, Minn. to William R. and Rufina (Gartner) Foster. He married Margaret R. Zabrocki on August 23, 1943 in Winona.

Tom served with the United States Navy in the 8th CB Unit from February 1942 until October 1945. During World War II, he served active duty overseas in Hawaii and Iwo Jima. He was employed by the State of Minnesota Department of Highways for 44 years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Parish, the American Legion Post No. 9 and the Winona DAV Association.

Tom is best remembered for his dapper style. He enjoyed his collection of hats, colorful suspenders, scarf ties and walking sticks. He was an avid gardener and took pride in his tomato and cucumber plants, rose bushes and flowering trees. He enjoyed gourmet cooking and baking for his family, and holidays and family celebrations were very important to him. In his younger years, he was a skilled fisherman, winning many an ice-fishing contest. In his golden years, he enjoyed the company of his immediate family and close friends and watching spectator sports and discussing current events. "T.D." was an endearing character and will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his two daughters, Mary (Rick) Starzecki of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Scherrie (Peter Van Dyken) Foster of Duluth; two granddaughters, Bre and Abbey Starzecki; and a brother, Edward of Rochester.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

A memorial service was held Saturday, March 24 at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, with Rev. Joseph Keefe officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery where military rites were provided by the American Legion and DAV Association.

Casketbearers were sons-in-law, Peter van Dyken and Rick Starzecki and family friends.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Munch, Ruth Laura (Adank)

Ruth Laura Munch (nee Adank), 84, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 10, 2001 at her home in the presence of her family and her pet cat, Punkin.

Loving wife of the late Frank Munch; devoted mother of Barbara Phillips, Nancy Takaoka, Sandra Brandenburg, Margery, Laureen and Kathy Munch; devoted grama of Matthew, Drew and Cara Phillips, John, Joe, Jeff, Janelle and Jim Avila, Michael and Joel Brandenburg, Shannon Scott and Frank Brown Jr., D'Artagnan and Desiree Lopez; loving aunt of George, Margie and Ron Mendoza; great grama of Kayla and Rochelle Phillips, Emma and Mark Walsemann, Jessica and T.J. Avila, Allesandra, Scott and Hailey Brandenburg and Khayree Lopez; mother-in-law of Howard Phillips, Dennis Takaoka, Alberto Gomez, Antonio Lopez, Michelle Griffin, Peter Walsemann, Shawn Phillips, Ginger Lopez and Ed Molascon; loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Funeral services were held at the Church of the Visitation and burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Donations may go to the American Lung Association, 2171 Junipero Serra Blvd., Ste. 720, Daly City, CA 94014-1999.

Dockweiler, Hedwig

Hedwig (Hattie) Dockweiler, 94, LaCrescent, Minn., died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, LaCrosse, Wis.

She was born May 8, 1906 in Waltershofen, Germany to Joseph and Maria (Rock) Hodapp. She came to the United States in 1928, living in Buffalo, NY. She married Herman Dockweiler on May 28, 1932 in Buffalo. They moved to Winona in 1932, and in 1941 moved to Gilmore Valley where she lived until 1993.

She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: a son, Eugene (Virginia) Dockweiler of LaCrescent and his son, James of Portland, Ore.; two step-grandsons, Ernest Bell and his daughter, Tianna Jo of Dakota, Minn. and Andrew (Margaret) Bell of Little Elm, Tex.; a daughter, Mary (Herman) Wittsack of Annandale, Minn. and her children, Peter (Judy) Wittsack and daughters, Holly, Heather, Hayley, and Heidi of Gaithersburg, MD.; Carol (Mark) Steinmetz and daughter, Rebecca of Sarasota, Fla.; Paul (Michelle) Wittsack and children, Laura and David of Mount Pleasant, SC; and Jeanne DeBord and children, Kelly and Kevin of Buffalo, Minn.; and a sister, Therese Hansler of Waltershofen, Germany.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman, on February 4, 1971, a brother, Philip Hodapp, a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Dockweiler, and a grandson-in-law, Terry DeBord.

Funeral services were Saturday, March 24, at St. Mary's Church, Winona, with Rev. Joseph Keefe and Msgr. Donald Grubisch officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

Mueller, Gertrude W. "Gertie"

Gertrude W. "Gertie" Mueller, 102, Lewiston, Minn., died at the Lewiston Villa on Wednesday, March 21, 2001.

She was born on February 6, 1899 in Norton Township, Winona County to William and Edith (Kreinbring) Stellwagen. She was baptized on February 12 by Pastor A.H. Kuntz. She attended Silo Immanual Lutheran Church and was confirmed by Rev. R.G. Gaiser on March 16, 1913. She married Walter J. Mueller on June 15, 1920 at Silo Immanual Church.

Following their marriage, they farmed in Hillsdale Township, Winona County. They later moved to the Lewiston area where they farmed until moving to Lewiston in 1945. He died August 7, 1978.

Shortly after the death of her husband, she moved to an apartment in Lewiston Manor where she lived until November 1994. Following hospitalization, she was transferred to the Lewiston Villa Nursing Home where she resided until her death.

She was the oldest member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Lewiston. She was a longtime member of the Ladies Aid. Her church was a very important part of her life. She has been a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

In addition to her years as a homemaker, she was a cook at the old Lewiston High School for five years. She also worked at the Altura turkey plant. She will be remembered for her love of gardening, baking and sewing skills. She enjoyed quilting and made a quilt for each grandchild as a wedding present. A favorite pastime was playing cards.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Edith Stellwagen, her husband, Walter, three brothers, Walter, William and Erwin Stellwagen, and one great-grandchild, Christopher Allan Hurst.

She is survived by a daughter, Lorraine (Kenneth) Korn of Summerville, SC; a son, Everett W. (Marion) Mueller of Winona; a sister, Elsie Harland of Rochester, Minn.; ten grandchildren: Wayne (Lydia) Korn of Okinawa, Wendy (Daniel) Brown of Lexington, SC, Teri (Charles) Hurst of Sumter, SC, Dale (Karen) Korn of Geneva, OH, Gary (Suzanne) Mueller of Mission Viejo, Cal, Randy (Linda) Mueller of Bloomington, Minn., Charles (Gail) Mueller of Eden Prairie, Minn., Paul (Nancy) Mueller of Rochester, Minn., Marybeth (John) Gardner of Gilbert, Ariz., and John Mueller of Parkersburg, WV; and twenty-six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 26, at St. John's in Lewiston with Rev. David Fischer and Rev. Michael Lindemann officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church one hour before the service.

The grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Active pallbearers will be Paul Mueller, Charles Mueller, Randy Mueller, Gary Mueller and Alan Mueller.

Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church, Lewiston Villa, or the donor's choice.

Abts, Cleo Joseph

Cleo Joseph Abts, 65, of Blair, Wis., and formerly of Fountain City, Wis., died Thursday, March 22, 2001 at the Grand View Health Care Center in Blair.

Cleo was born April 7, 1935 in Fountain City, the son of Dora (Rothering) and Emil Abts. He attended Cotter High School for three years and graduated in 1953 from Fountain City High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-56. He married Maureen "Peggy" Madder on July 7, 1956.

He worked for the Buffalo County Highway Department until his retirement in 1991.

Cleo was a member of the Fountain City Volunteer Fire Department and was everyone's favorite bartender at the Golden Frog Supper Club, both for many years.

He is survived by Peggy; four sons, Robert (Tracy) of Fountain City, Greg of Solon Springs, Wis., Dan (Judy) of Fountain City, and Paul (Tina) of Virginia Beach, VA; a daughter, Julie (Roger) Loewenhagen of Independence, Wis; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two brothers, Allen of Fountain City and Nathan (Mary Kay) of Green Bay, Wis.; and five sisters, Ethel (Bill) Kelley of Mesa, Ariz., Vera (Ken) Kafer and Janice Reuter, both of Winona, Mary Jane (Lyle) Bohlinger of Fountain City, and Sister LaVonne of LaCrosse, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Audrey and Margie.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fountain City, with Rev. Douglas Charles Robertson, celebrant. Interment will be at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fountain City.

Friends may call at the church after 1 p.m. Sunday.

Pallbearers will be Robert, Greg, Daniel, Paul and Christopher Abts and Nicholas Loewenhagen.

In light of the season of Lent, in lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to the Alzheimer's Association.
