Drury, Richard D.

Richard "Dick" Donald Drury, 65, of Winona, died peacefully Sunday, March 9, 2003, surrounded by his family.
Dick was born in Lanesboro, Minn., on February 21, 1938, to Jimmy and Lillian (Kingsbury) Drury, and grew up in Preston, Minn. He graduated from Preston High School, where he was an accomplished pitcher for the Blue Jays and set numerous records, and was scouted by the major leagues. Rather than pursue his baseball ambitions, Dick joined the USAF and served in the Strategic Air Command from 1957-1961. During his Air Force career, he served as an air policeman and had various details, including being a bodyguard for senior military officials and entertainers like Bob Hope and Molly Bee.
In 1968, Dick married Mary M. Wantoch of Fountain City, Wis., and they made their home in Winona. He worked for several years at NSP and Plastic Trading Company, was an active member of the Winona Area Jaycees, and a member and past president of the Winona Coin Club. In the early 1970s, Dick decided to go to work for himself, and opened a business dealing in rare coins, precious metals, and collectibles. He owned and operated the Coin Corner and The Dugout Sportscards until his retirement in the spring of 2000. Dick's passion for coins started when he was a paperboy in Preston, and took him all over the country, traveling to trade shows with his colleagues, and many times, his family.
In addition to having the freedom to travel, something he loved to do, owning his own business gave Dick time to pursue some hobbies, which included trout fishing, photography, and following the Twins and Vikings games. He also enjoyed spending time with his miniature schnauzer, Pepper. Dick's blue eyes, sense of humor, and his love of coins, baseball, and music will be remembered and missed by all who knew him.
Dick is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Vicki (Randy) Hilliard of Dover, Minn., and Janeen (Shawn) Coyle of Columbus, Wis.; one son, James, of Winona; three sisters, Nancy Drury, Tricia (Marlow) Vander Plas, and Dianne Ruud; and one brother, Kim, all of Preston, Minn. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, at Central Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jeff Franko and Rev. John Webster, a family friend, presiding. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in Preston, Minn., in the spring.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the church from 10-11 a.m. Thursday.
Pallbearers will be nephews Brian Anderson, Jasen Dahling, Jon Ruud, Darrin Vander Plas, Jason Wantoch, and Tony Wantoch.
The American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9 of Winona, will provide military honors at the cemetery in the spring.
