Callender, Rachael Lee

Rachael Lee Callender, 3, died Wednesday, February 9, 2000 in Bourbonnais, IL.

Rachael was born May 15, 1996 to Richard and Ginger Callender.

She is survived by her parents; one brother, Richie; her grandparents, Judy and Angus Callender of Winona, and Deborah and Dave McDermott, Chicago, IL; eight aunts and uncles, and nine cousins.

Memorials may be sent to the charity of one's choice.

Zwonitzer, Fyrne Lucille

Fyrne Lucille Zwonitzer, 88, Winona, died Thursday, February 10, 2000 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital.

She was born October 6, 1911 in Forks, NE. She married Elmer Ernst Zwonitzer, who is deceased. They had two children.

Funeral services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Cheyenne, WY, at a later date.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Conaughty, Loraine M.

Loraine M. Conaughty died Wednesday, January 19, 2000 at the Vintage Faire Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.She had lived in the Newporter Condominiums for the past twenty-seven years and is a long time member of Modesto Covenant Church. Loraine was a lover of Modesto, having lived here for 45 years, a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, a loyal member of her church, a mentor and counselor of numerous people, and a faithful friend of many. She was 82-years-old when she passed away.

Loraine was born in Utica, MN on April 26, 1917. She was raised in the Winona area. She graduated from Winona Senior High School, 18th out of class of 230. After graduation she was employed as the secretary to the high school's principal. She later worked as a secretary in the Registrar's Office at Winona State College.

At nearly 38 years of age and with nineteen years of secretarial experience, Loraine decided a major change was in her best interests, and she moved to Modesto, CA where she worked until retirement (25 years in all) as the secretary to the Deputy City Manager.

She is survived by a niece, Candace Kiskatalo of Wayzata, MN, and two cousins, Mardelle Becker of Utica and Jerome Midler, Rochester, MN.

She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Conaughty, her mother, Gertrude Baab Conaughty, both of the Winona area, and her brother, L.J. (Johnny) Conaughty of Winona and later Minnetonka, MN.

Remembrances may be made to the Modesto Covenant Church Missions Fund, 913 Floyd Avenue, Modesto, CA 95350.

Sweet, John Wright

John Wright Sweet, 70, of 725 West Fifth St., died Friday, February 11, 2000 at his home.

John was born March 14, 1929 in Bruce, WI, the son of Edna James (Brainerd) and William Sweet. He was a graduate of Bruce High School and graduated in 1969 from Parkview College, Parkview, MO, with a BA in Economics and Business Administration. He married Patricia L. Landrum on December 3, 1960 at Fort Bliss, TX.

John was a past member of the Redmen's Club, was a lifetime and active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Neville-Lien Post #1287 and served on its Board of Directors and as Post Adjutant. He was also a member of the VFW Honor Guard, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 1243, and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter #35.

John enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1947 as a Private, and retired in 1968 as a Lieutenant Colonel after 21 years of service. He served in Korea, Germany and several stateside posts. He also served on the Army General Staff in the Pentagon.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; one stepson, Bruce (Susan) Garrison of Winona; one stepdaughter, Nancy Ann Bacon, Cisco, TX; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Erwin Sweet of Kenosha, WI; two sisters, Ruth Adams of Bruce, WI and Alma Reiherzer, Eleva, WI; and a special friend, Hellen Oevering.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, William Sweet, and a stepdaughter, Shirley Mae Garrison.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home. Officiating will be longtime friend and retired Presbyterian pastor, Rev. Kenneth Honius. Military honors will be afforded by the VFW Neville-Lien Post #1287.Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. on Thursday.

Casketbearers will be members of the VFW Honor Guard: Ray Rumpca, Jim Miller, Ted Gierok, Don Elliott, Donald "Skip" Kuhlman and Elmer Mueller.

Memorials may be directed to the VFW Honor Guard.

Cornwell, R.D. "Dean"

R.D. "Dean" Cornwell, 97, of 83 Valley Trail Drive, died Sunday, February 13, 2000 at Sauer Memorial Home.

Rudolph Dean Cornwell was born on May 1, 1902 in Chatfield, MN, the son of Charles and Ella (Kjerner) Cornwell, and grew up in Villard, MN. He married Doris Irene Kohnke on November 7, 1930 in Wabasha, MN.

Dean began his career in the lumber industry with Standard Lumber Co. at locations in St. Peter, Mankato and Winona. He formed a partnership with Kenneth McQueen and purchased the R.D. Cone Hardware of Winona. They later purchased the Chatfield Lumber Company and started Kendell Lumber in Winona. In the early 1960's a division occurred in the business and Dean acquired D.F. O'Brien Lumber Company, which would later become known as Kendell-O'Brien Lumber. Subsequently, Dean also purchased Rollingstone Lumber. He remained active for over 40 years in the door and hardware business which was the foundation for the establishment of another business, Kendell Door and Hardware. Dean continued to remain active in the business until shortly before his death.

He was an active member of the First Baptist Church for nearly 60 years.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; a son, Jack (Susan) Cornwell of Winona; a daughter, Judy (Charles) Hillger, Eden Prairie, MN; grandchildren, Krysten Cornwell, Laurie (Kevin) Osadjan, Sally (John) Katter, Josh Hillger and Tyler hillger; great-grandchildren, Molly and Dylan Osadjan and Heidi Katter; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Kohnke; nieces and nephews; and two AFS exchange program daughters, Mary Lucas Johnston (Stephen) of London, England, and Jaike van der Velde (Peter van Buitenen) of Zeist, Netherlands, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ella Cornwell, brother, Seth Cornwell, and great-grandchild, Benji Katter.

A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 18 at First Baptist Church in Winona, with Rev. Ron Carlson officiating. Private interment services will be held Friday morning at Woodlawn Cemetery. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, February 17.

Casketbearers will be Francis Hoffman, Robert Hoffman, Duane Jackels, Loren Kapsch, Ray Beyers and Terry Selleck.

Memorials may be given to donor's choice of the First Baptist Church, American Heart Association or Community Foundation.

Smelser, C. Glenn

C. Glenn Smelser, was born on September 2, 1925 in Canby, MN, the only son of Dr. Clifford G. and Alma (Kracke) Smelser. Later the family settled in Winona where Glenn spent his childhood years. He played in the high school band, continuing the family tradition of playing the trombone. In 1943 he graduated from Winona High and enlisted in the army.

Upon his discharge he returned to Winona, attending Winona State University. There he met Doris Tuff, who would later become his wife. Glenn transferred to the University of Minnesota and then to St. Cloud University, graduating with a B.S. in Business Administration in 1951.

Glenn and Doris were married on August 6, 1949. After traveling to Cuba and throughout the southern and western United States, they settled in Remer, MN where Glenn had accepted his first teaching position.

Their daughter, Margo, was born in 1953 and son, Richard, a year later in 1954.

Glenn moved his family to Orangevale, CA and began a career in adult education, teaching at Folsom Prison. As Supervisor of Education for Extended Programs at California Department of Corrections in Vacaville, he implemented a college program for qualified inmates. He was proud of this culminating achievement and retired to Citrus Heights, CA in 1985.

C. Glenn Smelser died of complications due to Parkinson's Disease on January 7, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Doris, his daughter, son, and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held January 11, 2000 at Christ The King Lutheran Church in Orangevale, CA.

Pallbearers were Marc Anderson, Rick Smelser, Micah Anderson, Joshua Smelser, Christopher Smelser and Tom Swartz.

Burial services will be held Saturday, February 19 at 2 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, with Rev. Wade E. Davick of Central Lutheran Church officiating. A luncheon will follow at Central Lutheran Church, Winona.

Meier, Alvina J.

Alvina J. Meier, 91, formerly of 366 East Third St., died Sunday, February 13, 2000 at the C&R Unit at Winona Community Memorial Hospital.

She was born August 11, 1908 in Winona to Larry and August (Literski) Rozek. She married Gerald B. Meier on August 8, 1935 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. He died June 4, 1970.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish, Harvest House and Westfield Golf Club.

Alvina is survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and four sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday, February 16 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with Rev. Robert G. Meyer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call Wednesday one hour prior to the Mass at the Church. Harvest House will meet in a body at the church on Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be her great-nephews: Michael Jaszewski, Matt Jaszewski, Rollie Tust III, Robert Tust, Jim Vondrasek and Scott Johnstone.
