Viestenz, Edna L.

Edna L. Viestenz, 91, of 429 Wilson St., died Friday, May 25, 20012 at Community Memorial Hospital.

Edna was born in Winona County on May 10, 1910, the daughter of Fredrick and Louisa (Boehmke) Eggert. She married Elmer W. Viestenz on September 14, 1929 at Hart, Minn. He preceded her in death on May 24, 1991.

Edna was employed by Winona Knitting Mills as a sewer for 19 years, retiring in 1975.

She is a member of St. Matthew's Ev. Lutheran Church, its Ladies Aid, Bible Circle and Sewing Club.

Edna is survived by a son, Wallace (Marlene) Viestenz of Winona; daughters, Arlene (Donald) Brandt of Eyota, Minn., Beverly (Daryl) Potter of Stockton, Minn., La Verl (Richard) Olmstead of Apple Valley, Minn., and Helen (Larry) Triplett of Bloomington, Minn.; twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Maynard (Donna) Eggert of Rochester, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elmer, a brother, Arthur, a sister, Lena Feine, two infant sisters, and an infant brother.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 30, at 1 p.m. at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Wilson, Minn. Revs. Oliver H. Lindholm and James Nelson will officiate.

Friends may call Wednesday at the church from noon to 1 p.m.

Casketbearers will be Karen Bonow, Sandy Nelson, Lisa Gilliam, Tim Brandt, Ron Potter and Jeff Viestenz.

Memorial gifts may be given to St. Matthew's Ev. Lutheran Church or the donor's choice.

Fitzgerald, David Lee

David Lee Fitzgerald, 56, of 559 East Second St., died Sunday, May 27, 2001 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, Wis.

He was born March 12, 1945 in Winona to John and Ruth (Struble) Fitzgerald. He married Carol Ann Ratajczyk on July 6, 1963 in Winona.

He was employed at Winona Knitting Mills, Warner Swasey, and for thirty-three years at Brad Ragan Tire, retiring in 1999.

He was a member of the Winona Redmen's Club.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol of Winona; three sons, Timothy (Mary) of Indianapolis, Ind., and Tony and John of Winona; three grandchildren, Amanda and Matthew Fitzgerald of Winona and Zachary Fitzgerald of Indianapolis; two brothers, James (Mary Jo) of Winona and Donald (Andrea) of Burnsville, Minn.; two sisters, Jean (Edmund) Modrzejewski of San Francisco, Cal., and Patricia (Dan) Cole of Fairfield, Cal.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, William, and a dear friend, Eugene Pomeroy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Church with Rev. John M. Sauer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Preliminary services will be at 9:30 a.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Roger Anderson, Bob Schlink, Randy Zeller, Dan Boynton, Ed Board and William Sommers.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Pomeroy, Charles Smith, Kevin Brand, Pat Morrison, Jack Brandes and Troy Vaughn.

Whetstone, William P.

William P. Whetstone, 57, of Rt. 1, Winona, died Saturday, May 26, 2001 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, Wis.

Bill was born in Winona on February 21, 1944 to Allen and Dorothy (Betz) Whetstone. He married Darlene Brand. They were later divorced.

He worked at Camera Art in Lewiston in the shipping department, then as a part-time police officer for the City of Lewiston until 1989, and he then worked as a peace officer in the area. He was also an EMT for the Lewiston Volunteer Ambulance for many years.

Bill is a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Lewiston American Legion Post.

He is survived by his children, William Whetstone of Goodview, Minn., Julie Whetstone of Minnesota City, Minn., and Amie Whetstone of Lewiston; his father, Allen Whetstone of Minnesota City; his fiance, Bonnie Enright of Winona; a grandson to be born, Dominik James; brothers, Bruce (Nancy) of Mazeppa, Minn., and Brian (Mary) of Oakdale, Minn.; a sister, Kathleen (Patrick) Thesin of Indianapolis, Ind.; and his special buddy, his dog, "Bear."

Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy and an infant daughter, Melissa.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m.. Wednesday, May 30, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home with Rev. William Flesch officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery, Minnesota City, Minn.

Price, Margaret Eleanor Sexton

Margaret Price, 86, of 1535 West Fifth St., died Sunday, May 27, 2001 at her home.

Margaret Price was born January 24, 1915 in West Albany, Minn. Her parents were Nellie and James Sexton. Margaret had four brothers. Her father died of cancer when she was four years old. She grew up and went to Catholic schools in Wabasha. Her solid and deep Catholic faith started in her youth and guided her throughout her life to do a great deal of good for herself and all who knew her.

Margaret married Thomas Price in 1941 in Minneapolis. They had five sons, James, Michael, Stephen, William and Patrick. Thomas was an Army officer so the family moved with his assignments and settled in Tomah, Wis. in 1951.

Margaret worked at Camp McCoy in 1950s. In 1962 she moved to Winona where she became an active member of the Cathedral Parish. She continued her career in civil service in Winona by working at the Social Security office and later the Draft Board office during the tumultuous Vietnam War era. She retired in 1970. Margaret enjoyed golf and playing cards.

Margaret is described by her friends as a gentle woman and by her sons as a shining example. She exuded care and love for others throughout her life. She will be missed and thought of with love.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Nellie and James Sexton, her husband, Thomas Monroe Price, and four brothers, Joseph, Francis, Thomas and William Sexton.

Margaret is survived by five sons and their spouses: James and Louise Price of San Jose, Cal., Michael and Janet Price of Missouri City, Tex., Stephen and Maribeth (Schneider) Price of Destrehan, LA., William and Amy Jo Price of South Fremantle, Western Australia, and Patrick Price of Winona; grandchildren Bonnie, Natasha, Andrew, Amy, Julie Lirette, Laura Gardebled, Ela Desmarchellier, Rafael and Jesse; a great-grandson, Will; and three great-grandchildren on the way.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart with Rev. John Sauer officiating. Preliminary services will be at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Burial will be Friday, June 1 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minn.

Friends may call on Wednesday, May 30, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home where there will be a rosary at 7:30 p.m. led by Rev. Sean Haremza.

Casketbearers are Andrew Price, Karl Lirette, James Huberty, Robert Olson, James Sexton and William Schneider.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the Apostolate for Older Adults at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

Goretzki, Arnold "Arnie"

Arnold "Arnie" Goretzki, 91, of St. Charles, Minn., died Sunday, May 27, 2001 at Whitewater Healthcare Center in St. Charles.

Arnie was born October 15, 1909 in Bear Creek Valley near Rollingstone, Minn., to Leon and Teckla (Stachowitz) Goretzki. Arnie attended St. Charles School through eighth grade. He then worked for Chicago Great Western Railroad. He worked on the section crew for many years with his father, who was foreman, retiring in 1974.

Arnie and Gladys Burbach were married October 15, 1940. They made their home in St. Charles. Gladys died September 12, 1997. Arnie entered Whitewater Healthcare Center on June 14, 1999.

Arnie was a member of the St. Charles Volunteer Fire Department for many years and an active member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

He enjoyed metal and woodworking and loved to spend time in his workshop. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, birdwatching, and keeping records of the weather.

Survivors include two children, Sandy (Don) Guderian of Dover, and Jerry (Marilyn) Goretzki of Rochester; and five grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Gladys' death, one brother and a sister preceded him in death.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Rev. James Callahan officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call Wednesday from 9-10 a.m. at Hoff Funeral Home's - St. Charles Chapel.

Steinke, Dorothy E.

Dorothy E. Steinke, 84, of Hillcrest Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Wayzata, Minn., and formerly of Winona, died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at the nursing home.

She was born in Winona on September 2, 1916, the daughter of Roy and Wilhelmina (Schwanebeck) Miles. On November 18, 1944 she married Anton Steinke in Winona. He died December 1, 1983. Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother.

She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where she served as the carillonneur for many years. In later years she was a member of McKinley United Methodist Church and its Women's Circle. She also was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Winona Chapter #141, and a member of the Winona Rose Society.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Charles (Flora) Steinke of Plymouth, Minn.; grandchildren, Debra (Carl) Rugland of Plymouth, Thomas (Kari) Steinke of Long Lake, Minn., and Jeffrey (Nancy) Steinke of Chanhassen, Minn.; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother.

Funeral services were Tuesday, May 29 at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home with Rev. Shirley Duncanson of McKinley United Methodist Church officiating. An Eastern Star service preceded the religious service. Interment was in Fountain City Public Cemetery, Fountain City, Wis.

Casketbearers were Tom, Justin, Dane and Jeff Steinke and Carl Rugland.

Honorary bearer was Ervin Laufenburger.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the elevator fund of McKinley United Methodist Church.
