Carroll, John Jerome "Jerry"

Jerry Carroll, 66, of 4345 West Seventh St., Goodview, Minn., passed away on June 5, 2001 at his home surrounded by his family, following a long courageous battle with cancer.

Jerry was born on February 1, 1935 in Winona to George B. and Vivian F. (Erding) Carroll. He attended Winona Catholic schools and graduated from Cotter High School in 1954. On August 4, 1962 he married LaVonne T. Larsen at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

Jerry drove truck for Federal Bakery, Culligan Water Conditioning and Coca Cola in Winona. In 1965 he became chief maintenance engineer at the Tau Center (Assisi Hall) and was there for 32 years, retiring on February 1, 1997.

He was a member of the Goodview Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad from 1962-1990. Jerry served as a firefighter and fire chief for 28 years. As chief, Jerry ensured the welfare of the firefighters by arranging for them to receive a pension, and under his leadership the department became more effective by obtaining new and better equipment, moving into a new station, and developing the Rescue Squad.

He was one of seven men who organized the Goodview Activity Group (GAG) in 1977.

In February of 1990 he was honored for his skills and dedication to the City of Goodview, an honor he cherished deeply. He was very proud of the Goodview community in which he lived for 39 years.

Jerry helped organize the Volunteer Fire Department in Hidden Valley Trailer Park in Minnesota City. For this he carried an Honorary Lifetime Member card. He was an officer and served on the Board of Trustees in the Winona Elks Lodge #327. He is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Winona.

Jerry received many volunteer awards over the years, each had a special story attached, and he'd gladly tell the story...anytime and anyplace.

He loved life, his family, his work and fishing. A year-round fisherman, he had a great love, knowledge and respect for the mighty Mississippi River. He was known by many as "Walleye." His favorite prayer was: "O Lord, that I may live to fish until my dying day. And when it comes to my last cast, I then most humbly pray, when in the Lord's great landing net peacefully asleep, that in His mercy, I be judged big enough to keep!"

Jerry also enjoyed hunting, golfing, camping, woodworking, watching sports on TV, but probably most of all, socializing. He will be remembered for his gift of gab, his sense of humor, and his "fatherly" love and advice to all of his extended family members.

He is survived by his loving wife, LaVonne; two sons, Timothy J. (Julie Emmons) of Goodview and David P. (fiancee, Melissa Allen) of Antioch, Cal.; a grandson, Micah of Goodview; his mother, Vivian Carroll of Winona; a sister, Jane (Gerald) Hawes of Harpers Ferry, IA; his mother-in-law, Grace Larsen of Goodview; a sister-in-law, Lois (Sonnie) Engle of Rochester, Minn.; two godchildren - a niece, Leslie Ann Karam of Eagan, Minn. and a grandniece, Jessica Ann Karam of Eagan; six nephews; two nieces; many friends, and his Sheltie, Brandee.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father and his father-in-law.

Jerry's faith, positive attitude, and the support he received from his family and friends, made him the 1998 Person Of Hope at the Winona Rivertown Shuffle, a fund raiser for the American Cancer Society.

"God saw he was getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He wrapped His arms around him and whispered, "come with me." With tearful eyes we watched him fade away. Although we loved him dearly, we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands now rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best!"

In accordance with Jerry's wishes he was cremated. A memorial service was held Friday, June 8 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Keefe officiating.

Memorials may be directed to the Winona Area Hospice Services.
