Kujak, Roman E.
Roman E. Kujak, 78, of Dodge, Wis., died Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Center, Arcadia, Wis.

He was born November 16, 1922 in Pine Creek, Wis. to Stanley and Anna (Wantoch) Kujak. He married Anna M. Eichman on September 23, 1947 in Sacred Heart Church, Pine Creek.

Roman and his wife, Anna farmed in the Dodge area for many years and he also later worked at Kujak Transport as a diesel mechanic.

His favorite hobbies included gardening, hunting and fishing, and he always enjoyed a good game of "Sheepshead." His family and friends will remember him as a great Packer fan.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, and was discharged at the rank of Corporal. Roman served as a Marine Raider in the Pacific area and was wounded in action in 1945. He fought at New Georgia Island, BSI, Guam, Mariana Islands, Okinawa and Ryukyu Islands. He was decorated with the Purple Heart Medal.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Pine Creek and a member of the American Legion, VFW, and DAV.

Survivors include his wife, Anna of Trempealeau, Wis.; ten children: Kenneth (Marilyn) Kujak of Galesville, Wis., Roman S. (Debra) Kujak of Fountain City, Wis., Diane (Rick) Brumberg of Boulder City, Nev., Paul (Barbara) Kujak of River Falls, Wis., Bernard (Ann) Kujak of Winona, Betty Kleppe of Wausau, Wis., Marie (Garrett) Hebel of Tallahassee, Fla., Phyllis (David) La Fontaine, of River Falls, Wis., Carol Volkmann of St. Charles, Minn., and Therese Kujak of Onalaska, Wis. twenty-two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Daniel (Leona) Kujak of Winona; and a sister, Annemarie (Matthew) Daw of Prescott, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by a son, his parents, two brothers and four sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday, July 6 at 12 noon at Sacred Heart Church in Pine Creek, Wis. Burial will be in church cemetery. Rev. Robert Polcyn will officiate.

Friends may call Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home and again on Friday from 11 a.m. until time of Mass at the church. Father Polcyn will recite a rosary at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Pallbearers will be the Marine Reserves of Minneapolis and they will also provide military honors at the cemetery.

Holzer, Linda A.
Linda A. Holzer, 88, died Saturday, June 30, 2001 at Community Memorial Hospital.

She was born October 6, 1912 in Utica, Minn. to Herman and Mary Hermanson. She married Joseph J. Holzer who is deceased. Her son Larry passed away in December 2000. Five brothers and two sisters have also preceded her in death.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Judy Holzer of Winona; special grandsons, Scott Holzer of Mounds View and Brad (Stacy) Holzer of Victoria, Minn.; great-granddaughter, Emma Claire Holzer of Victoria, and TALCOT.

She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She especially enjoyed the visits from her nurses and staff who would see her in her private room at Sauer Memorial Home, where she stayed for three years.

She will be sadly missed by her family for her kind and gentle ways and her unconditional love that she always gave them.

Private graveside services were held Monday at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Hittner, Ray J.
Ray J. Hittner, 84, of 1303 West Fifth St., died Saturday, June 30, 2001 at St. Anne Hospice.

He was born in Winona on February 23, 1917 to Frank and Anna (Bingold) Hittner. He married Genevieve LaCroix at St. Thomas Pro-Cathedral in Winona on June 23, 1945.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Ray began his printing career at Leicht Press in Winona. When they closed he went to work for Winona Printing, retiring as production manager in 1992.

He is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westfield Golf Club, Knights of Columbus Council #639, Winona, and American Legion Post #9 of Winona.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; a daughter, Nancy (Wesley) Thies of Red Wing, Minn.; grandchildren, Katherine and Adam Thies; and brothers, George (Olive) of Goodview, Minn., Frank J. of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., and Albert (Virginia) of Rockford, Ill.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, July 3 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph L. Keefe officiating.

Memorial gifts may be directed to Alzheimer's Foundation or to St. Anne Hospice.

Wald, Violet O.
Violet O. Wald, 85, of 157 West Third St., died Thursday, June 28, 2001 at Lake Winona Manor in Winona.

Violet was born in Modena, Wis. on March 4, 1916 to Martin and Laura (Michaelson) Severson. She married Melvin Gueltzow on May 30, 1934 in Alma, Wis. He died November 7, 1971. Violet then married Benjamin H. Wald on July 24, 1982 in Winona. He currently resides at Pepin Manor, Pepin, Wis.

Violet is a member of Central United Methodist Church and its Afternoon Circle.

She is survived by her children, Marjorie (Anthony) Zittel of Winona, Wayne (Esther) Gueltzow of Tallahassee, Fla., and Betty (Robert B.) Boyum of Rushford, Minn.; twelve grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Melvin Gueltzow, two sisters and an infant brother.

Funeral services were Monday, July 2, at Central United Methodist Church with Rev. Mary Hurmence officiating. Burial was in Buffalo City Public Cemetery, Buffalo City, Wis.

Violet's grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as casketbearers.

The family has requested memorial gifts to Central United Methodist Church.

Fremming, Helen V.
Helen V. Fremming, 80, of St. Anne Hospice, died Friday, June 29, 2001 at the hospice.

She was born September 7, 1920 in Chicago, Ill. to Arthur O. and Viola (Rostanka) Solseth. She married Robert A. Fremming on June 22, 1943 in Washington, DC.

She was employed by the U.S. Government as a Grant Assistant.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Winona.

Survivors include her husband, Robert A. Fremming of Hagerstown, MD.; sons, Michael (Susan) Fremming of Navarne, Fla., Robert (Denise) Fremming of Olney, MD., and David (Ruth) Fremming of Hagerstown, MD.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Arthur John Solseth, and two sisters, Maxine Herrmann and Dorothy Humble.

A Memorial Service was held Tuesday, July 3, in the Chapel of Our Lady at St. Anne Hospice. Private burial will take place at a later date in Maryland.

Styx, Julie Marie
Julie lost her life due to a motorcycle accident that occurred Wednesday, July 4, 2001 in Rollingstone, Minn.

She was a supervisor in the packaging department of Fastenal Company. She has been a resident of Winona her entire life, the daughter of Wesley John and Lorraine Mary (Simon) Roach. She was the loving mother of two.

She married Thomas Styx and they were later divorced. Julie was a member of St. Martin's Ev. Lutheran Church of Winona.

Julie is survived by her sons, Tyler Daniel Styx and Logan Thomas Styx, both of Winona; her four legged companion, Jake; a good friend, Jim Mueller of Winona; her mother, Lorraine (Simon) Schultz and stepfather, Daniel Schultz of Lewiston, Minn.; two sisters, Tami (Dave) Losinski of Trempealeau, Wis. and Sheril Frame and significant other, Mike Wieczorek of Minnesota City, Minn.; one brother, Daniel Roach of Winona; two half sisters, Crystal (Andrew) Mazur of Lake in the Hills, Ill., and Allison (Mark) Green of Kenosha, Wis.; two half-brothers, Richard (Rebecca) Evens of Little Fork, Minn. and Travis (Rebecca) Roach of St. Cloud, Minn.; stepbrothers, Anthony Schultz of Minneapolis, Minn., Mark (Duwn) Schultz of Owatonna, Minn. Daniel Schultz of Farmington, Minn., and Timothy (Stacy) Schultz of Rogers, Minn.; a stepsister, Sandi (Craig) Pahlen of Lakeville, Minn.; grandparents, John and Eleanor Roach, Winona; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Julie was preceded in death by her father, Wesley Roach, grandparents, Mabel and Lester Simon, half brother, Scott Mundt, step-uncles and aunts.

She was nicknamed "Jules" by many. May she shine down on us forever. You were loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were Monday, July 9, at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Timothy Dost officiating. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Wilson, Minn.

Casketbearers were Don "Big Don" Peterson, Andy Hazelton, Ty Walchak, Jim Jenkinson, Mike "Mojo" Podjaski and Brent Sutter.

The family requests memorial gifts be sent to her sons, Tyler and Logan Styx, 36264 Abrams St., Whitehall, WI 54733.

Anderson, Carmen
Carmen Anderson, 77, Mabel, Minn., died Friday, July 6, 2001 at Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.

Funeral services were Tuesday, July 10 at Garness Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Mabel with Rev. Mary Waudby officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Hilde, Carroll S.
Carroll S. Hilde, 91, of 561 West Broadway, died Saturday, July 7, 2001 at Sauer Memorial Home, Winona.

Carroll was born in Breckenridge, Minn. on September 1, 1909 to Anton and Luella (Peterson) Hilde. He married Dale R. Kinshella on August 14, 1932 in St. Paul, Minn., and they have made Winona their home since 1944.

Carroll graduated from South High School in Minneapolis. He then worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone for 25 years, retiring as construction foreman. Following that he worked at Wincraft for an additional fifteen years.

He is a member of McKinley United Methodist Church, Winona, where he was an usher for many years. He loved playing golf and cards with his friends at Westfield Golf Club.

Survivors include his wife, Dale R. of Winona; a son, Gregory Hilde of Northfield, Minn.; a daughter, Betsy (Daniel) Mahoney of Eden Prairie, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Claudia Hilde of Northfield, Minn.; grandchildren, Karen (Randy) Blader, Laurie (Rick) Brown, Kelly (John) Phyle, Leah, Gina and Ben Hilde, and nine great-grandchildren.

Carroll was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Orley and Harold.

Funeral services for Carroll will be Thursday, July 12 at 2 p.m. at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home with Rev. Shirley Duncanson of McKinley United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from noon to time of services.

Casketbearers are Randy and Brent Blader, Rick Brown, John Phyle, Ryan Briese and Ben Hilde.

A memorial is being arranged.
