Koenig, Evelyn Cecelia
Evelyn Cecelia Koenig was born July 23, 1902 to John J. and Mary Ann (Nagle) Monahan in Witoka, Minn., Winona County. She married George Michael Koenig on November 15, 1921 in Loveland, Colo. He preceded her in death on November 4, 1978.

They farmed together on Homer Ridge for 49 years, moving to Winona in 1970.

She was educated in local schools, and at St. Mary's Academy, Amarillo, Tex., West Texas State College, Canyon, Tex., and St. Anthony's School of Nursing, Amarillo, Tex.

Evelyn was an active member in church affairs at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Wilson, Minn., then at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart after moving to Winona. She served as a 4-H and extension group leader for many years, and also served on the Winona County Nurses Advisory Board, Winona County Extension Board, Farmers Community Park Board and other farm organizations.

She is a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona Council of Catholic Women, Catholic Daughters of America, St. Anne Hospice Auxiliary, Winona County Historical Society, Winona County Old Settlers Association, Winona Senior Friendship Center, was a 15-year member of Winona Health Auxiliary, served as treasurer of the gift shop for four years, was a past member of the Farm Bureau, Farmers Union and the World War I Barracks #1082 Auxiliary.

Evelyn is survived by sons, George L. (Virginia) of Rt. 3, Winona, Bernard T. (Mary Faith) of Conrad, MT, and Mark J. of Portland, Ore.; fourteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, Joseph, John, Paul and Patrick, twin sister, Ethel, her daughter, Bernice Williams, two grandsons, Gregory and George, and a granddaughter, Michelle.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, July 10, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart with Rev. John Sauer and Rev. James Hennessy concelebrating. Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Ridgeway, Minn.

Casketbearers were James, Paul and Bryon Koenig, Dean Williams, Scott and Brent Turner.

Honorary bearers were Loyel "Bud" and Dee Hoseck and family.

Yackel, James Robert
James Robert Yackel, 52, of Ruther Glen in Caroline County died Saturday, July 7, 2001 in Richmond VA Medical Center.

Born in Winona, Mr. Yackel was an employee of In-Steel Wire Products in Fredericksburg, an Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and a member of St. Mary's of the Annunciation in Ladysmith.

Survivors include two daughters, Amanda Sue Yackel and Laura Ann Yackel of the home; his parents, Robert and Margaret Yackel of Montross; five brothers, Steven Yackel of Ruther Glen, Donald Yackel of Spotsylvania, Paul Yackel of Warsaw, Scott Yackel of Salisbury, MD, and Tobin Yackel of the U.S.Air Force; and a sister, Patricia Ptucha of Montross.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, at St. Mary's of the Annunciation in Ladysmith. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Amanda and Laura Yackel Education Fund, c/o Northern Neck State Bank, Warsaw, VA 22572.

Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, VA is handling the arrangements.

Martin, Eugene J.
Eugene J. Martin, 80, of 1575 Homer Road, died Sunday, July 8, 2001 at Community Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 29, 1920 in Gilman, Wis. to Michael and Mary (Zill) Martin. He married Doloris Multhaup on November 21, 1942 in St. Mary's Church, Winona.

He began working for the Winona Knitting Mills in 1946, and retired in 1986.

He was a member of St. Casimir's Catholic Church, Winona.

Eugene served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Doloris of Winona; three sons, Jack Martin of Madison, Wis., Thomas (Patty) Martin and Michael Martin, both of Winona; two grandchildren, Brian (Bette) Martin and Wendy (Jeff) Kronebusch, both of Winona; four great-grandchildren, Brittany and Bret Martin and Kailey and Jenna Kronebusch; a brother, Ray Martin of Las Vegas, Nev.; and three sisters, Magdalen Weix of Janesville, Wis., and Loretta Seiler and Dolores Fritz, both of Winona.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Memorial Mass will be offered Wednesday, July 11 at 11 a.m. at St. Casimir's Catholic Church with Rev. James W. Hennessy officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Wednesday.

Koehler, Vonda M.
Vonda M. Koehler, 78, of Dover, Minn. died Monday, July 9, 2001 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, Minn.

Vonda was born November 27, 1922 in Winona to Mikael and Margaret (Decker) Erpelding. She has lived in Dover since 1945. Vonda and Floyd R. Koehler were married June 11, 1945 in Winona. He died December 29, 1996. They owned and operated Koehler's Bar in Dover for 20 years.

Mrs. Koehler enjoyed the outdoors, doing yard work, dancing, playing cards and a little gambling on the side. She mostly enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, the church's St. Francis Unit, and a devoted member of St. Jude's Shrine.

She is survived by two sons, Darrell (Vicki) Koehler of Dover and Darius Koehler of Rochester; a daughter, Karen (Mrs. Terrence) Lehnertz; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, two sisters, and a daughter-in-law.

There will be a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 13 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Rev. James Callahan officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in St. Charles, Minn. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Thursday and 9-10 a.m. Friday at Hoff Funeral Home's - St. Charles Chapel.

Memorials are preferred to Seasons Hospice.

Thein, Judith A.
Judith A. Thein, 48, of Lewiston, Minn., died Monday, July 9, 2001 at her home.

Judy was born in LaCrosse, Wis. to Leo and Margaret (Conner) Thein on April 15, 1953. In 1966, her family moved to Lewiston where Judy graduated from Lewiston High School in 1971.

Judy relocated to Rochester, Minn. There she worked for Woolworth's for 22-1/2 years. When the company closed the store, Judy moved back to Lewiston and worked for Riverside Electronics.

She belonged to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Lewiston and was a member of St. Theresa's Circle. Her hobbies included reading and rubber stamping, and she will be remembered affectionately for her needlecrafts.

Judy is survived by four brothers and two sisters: Sharon (Greg) Lawrence of Oak Grove, Minn., Nick (Brenda) Thein of Churchville, MD, Eileen Thein of Rochester, Minn., Gerry (Denise) Thein of Okoboji, IA, Rod Thein of Lewiston, and Robert Thein of Lewiston; eleven nieces and nephews; and five great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents and one nephew.

A Funeral Mass for Judy will be Saturday, July 14 at St. Rose of Lima Church in Lewiston at 10 a.m. with Father Peter Schuster officiating. Friends may call on the family from 4-8 p.m. Friday, July 13 at Hoff Funeral Homes - Lewiston Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening.

Hoff Funeral Homes - Lewiston Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Feiten, Msgr. John Richard
Monsignor J. Richard Feiten, age 77, a priest of the Diocese of Winona, died on Monday, July 9, 2001 at St. Elizabeth's Nursing Home, Wabasha, Minn.

John Richard Feiten was born April 23, 1924 in Winona, the son of Louis O. and Hazel (Harris) Feiten. His bachelor's degree was from St. Mary's College in Winona where he studied from September 1942 to February 1944. He studied theology at Theological College of Catholic University, Washington, D.C. and at the same time he earned a Master of Arts in Sociology from Catholic University. Father Feiten was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Winona on June 6, 1948 at St. Thomas Pro Cathedral in Winona, by Most Rev. Leo Binz, D.D.

During the years of his priestly service, Father Feiten served Catholic Charities for 23 years and 29 years in parochial ministry.

Msgr. Feiten served as assistant pastor at St. John's Parish in Rochester from 1948 to 1950. In September of 1950 he was appointed to the faculty of Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary as the finance officer. At the same time he was appointed Director of Catholic Charities, in which capacity he served until 1973. Additionally he was Administrator at Precious Blood Parish, LaMoille from 1957 to 1967. Msgr. Feiten was pastor of St. Peter Parish, Hokah 1973, St. Pius X Parish, Rochester 1974, St. Felix Parish, Wabasha 1982 and also became Parochial Administrator of Immaculate Conception Parish, Conception, and St. Joseph Parish, Theilman in 1983, and his last pastorate was for Sacred Heart Parish, Hayfield 1990. In June of 1994 he became Chaplain to St. Anne's Hospice, from which he retired from active ministry June 19, 2000.

Among his many responsibilities Msgr. Feiten was also closely associated with the work of Mother Teresa of Calcutta and the Missionaries of Charity. For a time he was the national treasurer of the Co-Workers of Mother Teresa. He was active as a chaplain to Teams of Our Lady, which promotes a spirituality of marriage, for which he was Super Regional Chaplain. Msgr. Feiten was a noted advocate for life. He was also at various points in his career Advocate and Notary of the Tribunal, Moderator of the Catholic Recreational Center, Winona, member of the Presbyteral Council, member of the College of Consultors, Moderator of Cursillo in the Diocese of Winona, Chaplain to the Children's Home, Area Director (Dean) and other advisory or service responsibilities.

Pope Pius XII honored him with the title Papal Chamberlain February 29, 1956, and Pope John XXIII honored him as Domestic Prelate, September 27, 1961, both honors carry the title Monsignor.

Father Feiten is survived by his brothers, Robert L. (Aline) Feiten of Denver, Colo. and Philip (Therese) Feiten of Winona; and sisters, Mary Arnoldy of New Ulm, Minn. and Patricia (Michael) McHugh of Storrs, Conn.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, July 13, at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona. The Most Reverend Bernard J. Harrington, Bishop of Winona will preside, with the priests of the diocese concelebrating.

Friends may call at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home on Thursday, July 12 from 5-8 p.m. where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Casketbearers are Joseph and Thomas Feiten, Robert Arnoldy, Ted Eisenbacher, Todd Olson and John Bulawa.

Memorial gifts may be directed to Catholic Charities of the Winona Diocese or to the Missionaries of Charity.

Trainor, Don P.
Don P. Trainor, 67, of Vadnais Heights, Minn., born in Winona, died suddenly Monday, July 9, 2001.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Phyllis; children, Dennis (Cheryl), Tim (Cindy), Dana (Randy); grandchildren, Rebecca, Ryan, Kenneth, Samantha, Teena, Terra, and Jacob; a brother, Dan (Joanne); sisters, Dianne Huff and Dee (Dan) Mertes; nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was the founder of Printing Enterprises of New Brighton.

Funeral services were Thursday, July 12 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in New Brighton.

Arrangements were by Holcomb-Henry-Bloom North Chapel in Shoreview, Minn.
