Hundorf, Elva C.
Elva C. Hundorf, 97, of Rushford, died Friday, July 4, 2003, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford. Elva was born on October 15, 1905, at Vinegar Hill, East of Rushford to Gullick and Olena (Laugen) Halverson. She was raised in the Rushford area and attended Rushford High School. She married Adolph Evenson, they were later divorced. Elva married Ralph Hundorf on December 22, 1951, Ralph died in 1996. Elva was a waitress all of her career at several Rushford restaurants, retiring in 1979. She was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church and the Rushford Legion Auxiliary. Elva enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, music, and dancing. It is appropriate that Elva's death occurred on the Fourth of July, because she was a true firecracker. Elva is survived by one son: Robert (Helen) Evenson of Rushford; two daughters: Mavis Littlejohn of LaCrosse, Wis. and Karen (Louie) Laganier of Grey Eagle, Minn.; 13 grandchildren: Tim, Gale, Terrie, Edward, Eliot, Gregory, Bradley, Marsha, Scott, Patrick, Todd, Jessie, and Stacy; 30 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and five sisters. The funeral service was at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home Chapel in Rushford with the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiating. Burial was in the Oak Grove City Cemetery in Rushford.

Laumb, Milda
Milda H. Laumb, 83, of Vinegar Hill, East of Rushford, died Friday, July 4, 2003, at her home. She was born on January 18, 1920, in Hart Township of Winona County to Herman and Meta (Bergman) Runge. She was raised at Hart and attended the John's School. On May 15, 1948, Milda married Laurence Laumb at Hart. She raised her family on the family farm at Hart and moved to the farm on Vinegar Hill in the early 1960's, where Milda and Laurence had farmed since. She was a member of the St. Mark's Lutheran Church and ladies aid. Milda enjoyed crocheting, gardening, and flowers. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Milda always put the needs of others ahead of her own. Milda is survived by her husband Laurence; three sons: Herman (Melanie) Laumb, LaVerne (Tami) Laumb, and Wesley Laumb all of rural Houston; three daughters: Helen (Kenneth) Jacobson of rural Peterson, Dorothy (Joe) Himlie of Rushford, and LaVonne (Larry) Reps of Lewiston; 19 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence Runge of Rushford. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and one grandson. The funeral service was Tuesday, July 8, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Rushford with the Rev. Frederick Buth officiating. Burial was at the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.
The family prefers memorials to be directed to the St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Rushford Chapel assisted the family with funeral arrangements.

Bond, Lloyd W.
Lloyd W. Bond, 93, of Fountain City, Wis., died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.
He was born September 11, 1909, in Gilmanton, Wis. He married Florine Turnbull. She is deceased. They had two children.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 24, at 2 p.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ in Fountain City. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in the Fountain City Public Cemetery.

Hengel, Peter
Peter Hengel, 72, of Coon Rapids, Minn., died Tuesday, July 1, 2003.
A celebration of his life was held Monday, July 7, with a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Epiphany in Coon Rapids. Burial was in Epiphany Cemetery.

Sillman, William T.
William T. Sillman, 95, of Bloomington, Minn., formerly of Winona, died May 5, 2003, at the Minnesota Masonic Home in Bloomington.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 12, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winona, with interment in the Memorial Garden adjacent to the church.

Gernes, Charles H.
Charles H. Gernes, 81, of New London, Minn., died Friday, July 4, 2003, at Rice Hospital, Willmar, Minn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church near Spicer. Inurnment will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Winona.

Fletcher, Eugene
Eugene Fletcher, 74, died Sunday, June 29, 2003, of cancer at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.
He was born March 13, 1929, in Winona, to Clarence A. and Mildrid A. (Vick) Fletcher. He married Angelina Linner.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany, Korea and Japan.
He and family were long-time residents of Junction City before moving to Milford, KS. In 1999, they moved to Clifton, KS. He enjoyed singing for residents in area nursing homes. He was a member of the Retired Enlisted Association and the Clifton Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Angelina Fletcher, of Rossville, KS; a son, Michael (Ann) Fletcher, of Topeka, KS; a brother, Edwin Fletcher, of Winona; two sisters, Elaine Wood, of Stockton, NY, and Mary Eagleton, of Inverness, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Sweazey.
Funeral services were Thursday, July 3, at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Chapel in Clay Center, KS., with Rev. Larry Sullivan officiating. Burial was in Ft. Riley Cemetery, Ft. Riley, KS.

Gile, Lavern A.
Lavern A. Gile, 68, of LaCrescent, Minn., passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, July 19, 2003.
He was born January 8, 1935, in LaCrosse, Wis., to Rudy and Margaret (Trocinski) Gile.
Lavern served in Korea with the U.S. Army. He married Doreen Zenke on July 5, 1958, in Dakota, Minn. He had worked at LaCrosse Concrete for many years and was a member of the Church of the Crucifixion in LaCrescent. Lavern had a wonderful sense of humor and loved being around his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Doreen; four children, Jay (Lynne) Gile, of Bangor, Wis., Jill Gray, of New Brighton, Minn., Kristal (Tim) Mueller, of LaCrescent, and Kelly ((Teri) Gile, of West Salem, Wis.; ten grandchildren, Melinda and Joseph Gile, Christopher, Kari and Ryan Gray, Jeffrey and Peter Mueller, and Taylor, Elizabeth and Katelyn Gile; his mother, Margaret, of Dakota; two sisters, Shirley (Jerry) Duerwachter, and Eileen (Stanley) Beach, both of LaCrescent; and four brothers, Marvin (Doris), of Byron, Ill., Norman (Joyce), of LaCrescent, Glenn (Barb), of LaCrescent, and Larry (Connie), of Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his father.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, July 23, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Crucifixion in LaCrescent, with Msgr. Donald W. Grubisch officiating. Burial will be Crucifixion Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
Memorials may be given to the Church of the Crucifixion.
Lavern's family would like to thank the nursing staff at the Gundersen Lutheran Dialysis Unit for their wonderful care.

Shaw, Rev. William W.
Rev. William W. Shaw, age 90, of Winona, died Friday, July 18, 2003 at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona.
William Wenig was born on June 12, 1913, at Gray, Iowa, to James Taylor and Nettie Mary (Wenig) Shaw. On May 10, 1941, he married Jeanne Poole in Minneapolis, Minn. and over the 62 years of marriage, he always was Jeanne's "Knight in Shining Armor".
William graduated from North Central Bible College, Minneapolis, Minn., in 1941. He was ordained on August 5, 1943. He served as a pastor in the Assembly of God Church in Nashua, Iowa; Knoxville, Iowa; Conrad, Iowa; Dawson, Minn. and for 18 years as pastor of Winona. He received his 50 year ordination recognition on April 21, 1993. He retired from full time pastoral ministry in December 1970, but continued to serve his church during his retirement years. He also was employed from 1964 to 1981 at the Federal Fish & Wildlife Department, Winona.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, Winona, four children: Rev. Phil (Faith) Shaw, Rochester, Minn., Miriam (William) Poppe, Winona, Rev. Mark (Kathy) Shaw, LaCrosse, Wis. and Dr. Timothy (Jeanne) Shaw, Shoreview, Minn.; 9 grandchildren; Christina Shaw, Luke Shaw, Kevin (Renee) Poppe, Daniel Poppe, Gregory Shaw, Christopher Shaw, Erin Shaw, Billy Shaw and Ryan Shaw; one sister Emareld (Gerald) Fogelman, Omaha, Neb.; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James Shaw and adopted brother Billy Shaw and one sister and one brother in infancy.
Funeral services were Monday, July 21, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Assembly of God Church, Winona with Rev. Rick Drury, officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.
The casket bearers were the grandsons.
Memorials may be directed to New Life Worship Center, Rochester, Minn. in his name.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Winona.

Lovas, Dorothy G. McKennon
Dorothy G. McKennon Lovas, 69, of Cochrane, Wis., died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at her home.
She was born December 12, 1933, in Winona, to Francis "Mac" and Frances (Kutzabotski) McKennon. By the time she was 15, she had met the love of her life, Robert "Bobby" Lovas. They were married July 14, 1951, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Winona, and together they raised five children in a house full of laughter and love.
Everyone who knew Dorothy was touched by her compassion and strength. She was an inspiration to all of us - a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who made sure we were taught humility and grace.
Dorothy has left the bonds of earth - she is with the angels and we will never stop loving her.
Dorothy had attended college for one year at Winona State University in 1969. She was a member of St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fountain City, Wis.
Survivors include her adoring husband, Bobby; her five children, Ann Marie (David) Kohner, of Winona, Frank (Lisa) Lovas, of Alma, Wis., Robert Jr. (Lori) Lovas, of Buffalo City, Wis., Jeanine Lovas and Joe Feiten, of Winona, and Cindy (Tim) Averbeck, of West Salem, Wis.; fourteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Delores Nako, of Winona; a brother, George Thilmany, of Winona; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and eight brothers and sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, April 11, at St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fountain City, with Father Donald J. Lovas officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Winona.
Pallbearers were Tim Averbeck, Joe Feiten, David Kohner, and Charlie Beighley.
Honorary pallbearers were Jim Niemeyer, Charlie Nichols, Joe Allen, Jack Scherer, and Doug Decker.
J.S. Wozney Funeral Chapel assisted with the arrangements.

Stoltman, Thomas Francis
Thomas Francis Stoltman, 77, of 317 West King Street, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital.
He was born January 17, 1926, in Winona, to Felix J. and Mary Elizabeth (Nowitzki) Stoltman. He and Mary Lou Abrahamsen were married on May 30, 1951, at St. Thomas Pro-Cathedral Church.
He attended St. Stanislaus Grade School and graduated from Winona High School in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army in January 1944. After infantry and artillery training he joined the Paratroops and went to Jump School at Fort Benning, Ga. He was a member of the 503rd Parachute Infantry Combat Team which made the famous "Jump on Corregidor" in the Philippines in 1945. He served as first scout with his unit in the jungles of the Philippines until war's end. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Army of Occupation in Japan, until his discharge in May 1946.
He attended Winona State Teachers College and graduated with a B.S. degree in 1952, and an M.S. degree in 1961. He also did graduate work in speech and theater at the University of Minnesota. Following his first year of teaching at Plainview, Minn., he taught for 31 years at Winona Senior High School in the English Department. He served as chairman of the department from 1976, until his retirement in 1984. He taught theater, speech, English, and radio-TV, for which he pioneered the curriculum for WSHS. His coaching of forensics and drama was legendary. His teams won two state championships, four second-place trophies, and consecutive district and regional championships for many years.
In 1973, he was honored as Minnesota Teacher of the Year.
Tom loved the Mississippi River and fished daily in the summer, and ice-fished weekends in the winter. He and his brother, Dietz, were charter members of the East Gate Boat Club after World War II. In his later years he especially enjoyed fishing with his grandson, Parke, in Sam Gordie's or Track Slough.
Tom was an avid gardener who took great pride in his flower gardens and perfect lawn. His other interests included woodworking, furniture refinishing and collecting antique tools.
He was a lifetime member of NEA/MEA, past member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his four children, son Tim (Sue), of Bloomington, Minn., and their children, Nathan, Anne and Katie; daughter Jean (Dan Frie), of Monticello, Minn., and their children, Matthew and Alison; son Will (Cheri), and their children, Olivia, Gracie, and Parke; and son Lee (Mary), and their children, Aaron and Hannah; a sister and brother-in-law Margaret and Kenneth Poblocki; a sister-in-law Leona (James V.) Stoltman; and a daughter-in-law Lisa James.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers James V., Leo B. (Dietz) and Robert, and a sister-in-law Mary Stoltman.
A service of remembrance was held Friday, April 11, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home. Burial with full military honors wil take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Monday, April 14, at 11:45 a.m.
A memorial is being arranged.

Smith, Doretta (Ahlers)
Doretta (Ahlers) Smith, 72, of 14 Mille Lacs Lane, Lake Village, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Lake Winona Manor.
Doretta was born on November 13, 1930, in Wabasha, Minn., to Henry and Regina Schuth Ahlers. She spent 26 years in South Dakota prior to moving to Winona in 1984. Doretta married Gene Sanders on April 20, 1947, in Wabasha. They were later divorced. She married Walter Rietmann in 1964. He died in 1986. She married James Smith on August 15, 1990. He died January 25, 1998.
She is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
She is survived by four sons, Eddie (Shirley) Sanders, Roger Sanders, and Dale (Kathy) Sanders, all of Lake City, Minn., and Otto (Jennie) Sanders, of Red Wing, Minn.; a daughter, Melody Johnson, of Goodview, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Crystal Cady, Casey Johnson, Trent and Kristi Sanders, Schatney and Travis Sanders, and Brandy Sanders; three brothers, Joe (Alta) Ahlers, and John (Marcella) Ahlers, both of Wabasha, Minn., and Herman Ahlers, of Blue River, Wis.; and sisters, Lucy Sexton, of Lake City, and Frances Brinkman, of Altura, Minn.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and one brother.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, April 12, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Rev. Joseph Keefe officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lake City.
Casketbearers were Roger Cady, Harold Johnson, Bob Beech, Eddie Sanders, Dale Sanders, and Jeff Brinkman.
Martin-Myhre Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
