Hilda Hall

Hilda Hall, 89, of Pelican Rapids died Monday, June 7, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in Pelican Rapids.

Hilda Elvira Hanson was born July 22, 1914, to Ole and Ingeborg (Nelson) Hanson in Mohall, N.D. While she was yet small, her family moved to Spokane, Wash., for 3 years before moving back to Griggs County, N.D.

At 17 years of age she was asked to care for an ailing neighbor named Hugh Hall, whom she married a year later on Sept. 23, 1932, in Sutton, N.D. Upon losing the Hall farm due to three years of Depression drought, Hugh and Hilda moved to Iowa where his family had roots. Their new life was blessed with a rich Iowa dairy farm, which they bought and paid for as soon as possible in order to begin planning their family.

Gary, Doug and Richard Val came along in 1941, 1944, and 1946 while Hilda continued sharing farm work in addition to motherhood, housekeeping, and furnishing a home away from home for a variety of friends and relatives throughout the years. The Hall's door was always open with a helping hand extended whenever or wherever needed. A tragic tractor accident in 1961 took Val just months before their scheduled retirement. Hilda never fully recovered from this devastating loss and was changed forever from the blow.

A few years later in 1974 Hilda and Hugh moved to Pelican Rapids, where they bought a house and built a lake cabin on Lake Lizzie, shoulder to shoulder from the basement to the peak. They shared 19 happy years dividing their time between the cabin, fishing and volunteering help and music in local senior citizen centers and retirement homes. Though Hugh was usually in the limelight as a good musician and storyteller, Hilda was always the supporting shadow hand in the wings - driving, carrying drums, cooking and cleaning behind fishermen and vacationers, seldom complaining, never refusing.

After Hugh's death in Sept. 1994, Hilda settled into a quiet home life in Pelican where her sister Della frequently spent weekends helping her with sewing, craft projects, bills, moral and emotional support, and companionship. Hilda suffered Alzheimer's and entered Good Samaritan Home in 1999 where she resided until her death.

She is survived by her sons, Gary A. Hall and Douglas H. Hall, both of Pelican Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Hugh; and son Richard Val.
