Richard Tate

Richard L. "Dick" Tate, 59, of Minneapolis, died Sunday Feb. 15, 2004.

He was born in Fergus Falls. He was the former manager of Red Owl in Minneapolis and the owner of Service Lawn Landscape. He was a longtime usher at Park Av. United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his children, Stephanie and Christopher; grandchildren, Kline Richard and Allison; wife, Cheryl; mother, Lorraine; siblings; Nancy, Joann, Charles, Marilyn, Ronald and Jeffrey; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice; brother, David; and father, W. David.

Service: 10 a.m. on Saturday at Park Av. United Methodist Church, 3400 Park Av. S. Mpls. Burial: Lakewood cemetery. Memorials to donor's choice.

Ralph A. Maack

Ralph Maack, 56, of rural Erhard, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at his residence. Funeral arrangements are pending with the Olson Funeral Home of Fergus Falls.

Alma Aarhus

Alma Johanna Aarhus, 92, of Kenmare and Minot, N.D., and formerly of Watford City, died on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004.

She was born in Watford City on June 24, 1911 to Jorgen and Anna (Oen) Aarhus, who had recently emigrated from Norway to homestead in North Dakota. She was educated at local schools and at Dickinson State College, Minot State College, and the Lutheran Brethren Schools, of Fergus Falls, before beginning a life-long career as a teacher. She taught for a number of years in Watford City and Faribault, Minn., and King's Garden Christian Schools in Seattle, Wash., Morrison Academy, of Taiwan, for 10 years in Treungen, Norway, and until retirement at the Air Force Base schools in Minot, N.D. Always full of energy and enthusiasm, she filled her retirement years with teaching Norwegian adult education courses, doing free-lance translation and traveling extensively.

Alma was the family historian, maintaining contacts with her large extended family throughout the world, as well as with many valued life-long friends, colleagues and former students. She was known for her youthful spirit and love of children, counting her teaching days as the happiest of her long life. She had a passion for serving her Lord and for sharing her faith, and an abiding hope of one day seeing Him face to face. Her family cherishes memories of her, and shares her joy that this hope is now realized.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews including: Ray Finsaas, Lila Joseph, Orvin Finsaas, Alvin Aarhus, Bob Aarhus, Arlene Riley, JoAnn Gundersen, James Aarhus, Ruth Vallevik, Dave Aarhus, John and James Aarhus.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Julia Finsaas; four brothers: Tom, Ted, Joseph and Henry; and five siblings, who died in infancy.

Visitation: From 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot, N.D.

Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at in Our Redeemer's Lutheran Brethren Church, Minot.

Burial: Schaeffer cemetery in rural Watford City, N.D.

LeRoy Edenloff

LeRoy Edenloff, 83, of Parkers Prairie, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at his home.

He was born on Aug. 22, 1920, to Alvin and Mamie (Thornquist) Edenloff in Osakis. He was baptized and confirmed at the Osakis Lutheran Church. He attended Osakis Public Schools, graduating in 1938. He graduated from the University of Minnesota. Following his education, he served in the U.S. Army-Air Force during World War II.

He returned to Osakis following his honorable discharge from the service. He worked for R.E.A. News in Alexandria as a journalist for over 40 years, retiring in the late 1980's. He has resided in Parkers Prairie since the mid 1960's.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church where he served as an usher and participated in the tape ministry. He was a member of the Alexandria V. F. W., Elks Lodge and Parkers Prairie American Legion Post #219. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards, reading and watching sports on television.

He is survived by a brother, Victor (Lynn) Edenloff, of Parkers Prairie; four nephews: Merle (Virginia) Hall, of Phoenix, Ariz., Duane Hall, of Vancouver, Wash., Lee (Loray) Edenloff and Alan Edenloff, both of Alexandria, Minn.; a niece, Vicki Edenloff, of Fargo, N.D.; along with several great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marcella Hall; and a brother, Everett Edenloff.

Visitation: Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home in Parkers Prairie and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church

Service: Monday at 2 p.m. First Lutheran Church in Parkers Prairie

Hazel Olson

Hazel Pauline Olson, 85, formerly of Wendell, died Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Barrett Care Center.

Hazel Olson was born on May 3, 1918, in the original Kittel Olson home in Wendell, the third child of Nels and Louise (Moe) Olson. She attended elementary school in Wendell and was confirmed on May 22, 1932, at Trinity Lutheran Church. She attended high school in Elbow Lake.

In the early 1940's, she worked at the local farmer's store in Wheaton, Minn. From there, she moved to Baraboo, Wis., with friends and some family members. She worked as a cashier in a cafeteria at the war plant and also as a cashier for the canteen.

She eventually found herself in Minneapolis, where she began a career in the cosmetics industry with the Powers Department Store and then to Dayton's Department Store. She received many top sales awards throughout her career and retired in 1981. She remained in Minneapolis until 2000, when she moved to the Barrett Care Center.

She is survived by her brothers, Roy (Sylvia) Olson, of Johnson, and Orris (Eleanor) Olson, of Wendell; several nieces, nephews and their families; and friends Lorraine Pafko and Zella Samuelson, both of Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nels and Louise Olson; one sister, Rosella; brothers, Lawrence and Verner; nephews Larry Olson and Bill Olson; great-nephew, Jaron Olson; and step-niece Deloris Skogen.

Visitation: one hour before services on Saturday

Service: 2 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wendell

Lester Martinson

Lester W. Martinson, 86, a resident at the Mill Street Residence, formerly of Rothsay, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.

He was born on Nov. 1, 1917, in rural Rothsay, to Jens and Mathilda (Engelson) Martinson. He was baptized and confirmed at Hamar Lutheran Church of Rothsay and attended rural Rothsay school. After his schooling, he began working with his father and later purchased the meat market in Rothsay.

On July 30, 1946, he married Georgine Wahl in Pelican Rapids by Rev. Estrem. After their marriage, the couple lived in Rothsay and operated the meat market and later added a grocery store. They owned and operated the Martinson's Market until their retirement in the early 1980's. During that time, he was also a rural mail carrier for over 20 years.

He was an active member of the Hamar Lutheran Church, serving on the church board in various positions. He was a Charter Member of the Rothsay Lions, a member of the Eagles in Fergus Falls, and a volunteer fireman in Rothsay.

He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and was an amateur photographer.

He also helped the Rothsay High School students run the Tiger-Mart Store.

He is survived by his wife, Georgine, of Fergus Falls; and two sisters, Anna Cookman, of Fergus Falls, and Ella Gesling, of Mechanicsville, Iowa. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Henry, Harry, and Herman; and six sisters: Alice Dodson, Clara Anderson, Junith Christenson, Ruby Anderson, Effie Rix, and Esther Martinson.

Visitation: 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Grina Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Service: 11 a.m. Monday at Hamar Lutheran Church, Rothsay.

Clergy: Revs. Mike Sohl and Josh Nelson.

Burial: Hamar Lutheran cemetery, Rothsay.

Helen Freeman

Helen Feeman, 92, of Deer Creek, died on Feb. 11, 2004, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids. For the past 10 months she has been a resident of Rose Haven Foster Care in Menahga, Minn.

Helen Alice Louise Freeman was born on Jan. 5, 1912, to Michael and Helena (Hermann) Lange in Star Lake Township in Otter Tail County. She attended country schools near her home for eight years. She began high school in Warwick, N.D., while staying with her older half-sister.

When she came back to Minnesota, she worked at the Amor Store. She married Reuben Freeman on Oct. 25, 1928. The couple lived on farms near Ottertail Lake before moving to the Deer Creek area in 1936.

Reuben died in February 1963. In 1970, she sold her farm and built a house in Deer Creek. She worked as a cook for the Deer Creek school for eight years. She started the Senior Citizens Center in Deer Creek. She was very active in her church and in community groups.

She is survived by her children: Mervin (Phyllis), of Richville, Myron (Lola), of Menahga, Arliss Hauge, of Glenwood; and Karen (Charles) Braaten, of Hutchinson; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and sister, Delores Boigt, of Fergus Falls.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five sisters, six brothers, and one son-in-law.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home and from 9:30 to the service at the church on Monday.

Service: 11 a.m. on Monday at the Salem United Methodist Church in Deer Creek

Clergy: Rev. Alan Anderson

Burial: Oak Hill cemetery in Deer Creek

Funeral Home: Johnson Memorial Home, Wadena
