Daniel Schmid

Daniel J. Schmid, 25, Fergus Falls, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Lake Region Hospital, Fergus Falls.

He was born in Riverside, Calif., Dec. 15, 1978, and graduated from Fergus Falls High School. He loved music and all his family and friends. In 1987, he moved to Minneapolis with his family. He has lived in Spicer, Minn., and Brainerd, Minn., and for the past nine years has lived in Fergus Falls, three years with Steve Synstelien and for the past six years with Daryl and Linda Synstelien.

He is survived by his father, Sid Schmid of Dallas, Texas; grandmother, Bette Schmid of Minneapolis; sister, Kelly Schmid of Dallas, Texas; and his brother, Jeremy Schmid of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by his aunt, Stephanie; and uncle Bob.

He was preceded in death by his Grandpa James and infant brother, Russell.

Service: 2 P.M. Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Brethren Church in Fergus Falls

Edna Hansen

Edna Hansen, 79, Barrett, died Monday, Oct. 4, at Stevens' Homes Plus in rural Barrett.

She was born March 26, 1925, in Hoffman to William and Louise (Lorenz) Abel. Baptized and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church, she attended school in Hoffman.

On Nov. 13, 1943, she married Howard Melchert at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hoffman. The couple had five children: Ardis, Elaine, Maynard, Earl and Ivy. Howard and Edna farmed in the Morris and Hoffman areas until Howard's death on Feb. 3, 1958, at which time Edna and the children moved in with her parents in Hoffman

She married Henry Hansen on Nov. 18, 1961, and the couple lived and farmed east of Barrett. Daughter Jodi was born of this union. Hank died Dec. 14, 1993. She lived on the farm for awhile before moving to the Westside Apartments in Barrett. When her health wouldn't permit her to live alone, she moved to the Stevens' Homes Plus adult foster care of rural Barrett.

She enjoyed being a mother, homemaker, and the work on the farm. She enjoyed going to the Barrett Inn for coffee and visiting with friends. And she liked living at the Stevens' Homes Plus - there were always people visiting. She was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary and belonged to Peace Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her children: Ardis (John) Paulson, Elbow Lake, Elaine (Steve) Bordson, Elbow Lake, Maynard (Pat) Melchert, Ogden, Iowa, Earl (Jody) Melchert, Barrett, Ivy (Bryce) Anderson, Barrett, and Jodi (Dale) Norris, Barrett; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; sisters: Louise Koehntop, Morris, Hulda Larson, Coon Rapids, Amelia Alvstad, Hoffman, and Esther (Sigurd) Johnson, Hoffman; sisters-in-law: Marge Perko, Minneapolis, Betty Hagen and Beatrice Hansen, Hoffman, Shirley Zulk, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Carrie Melchert, Morris; brothers-in-law: Oliver (Det) Hansen, Elbow Lake, and Edward (LaVonne) Hansen, Nelson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Howard Melchert and Henry Hansen; and siblings: Rose, Rudolph, Mathilda, Dan, John, Meta and Lydia.

Service: 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Peace Lutheran Church in Barrett

Marion Powers

Marion Madelyn Haukebo Powers, 82, died Oct. 5, 2004, from ovarian and liver cancer. She was a long time teacher, principal, mentor and actor.

Born Marion Madelyn Haukebo Oct. 6, 1921, in Underwood to Gerhard K. (G.K.) and Cora (nee Woldy) Haukebo, she volunteered for military service in 1942 when the U.S. Coast Guard began its SPAR program in World War II.

She graduated from then Moorhead State Teacher's. In 1951, she married Max Hilton Powers of Lake City. In 1958 she began teaching English at Mankato High School and was the junior class drama coach. She and Max were among a group who founded of the Unitarian Fellowship Center in Mankato.

She followed her husband, Max, to California where he took a position at Stanford University. She became dean of girls at Holy Cross High School in Mountain View, Calif. When Holy Cross merged with St. Francis High School she continued to teach and coached several debate teams to national competitions.

After Max's death, she returned to Mankato to teach. She earned a master's degree and a specialist's degree from Minnesota State University - Mankato. She became assistant principal of Mankato West High School. Later she was principal at Mankato West Junior High School, a position from which she retired in 1986.

She is survived by her three children: Jeremy Powers of Fridley, Bryson Powers of Eagan, and Kaja Powers of Minneapolis. Jeremy is married to Ruth (nee Gosen) and they have one child, Nora. She is also survived by siblings Clarice "Kelly" Falk, Grace Landin, Gerhard "Gerry" Haukebo and wife Doris, Noel Haukebo and wife Jennifer and Lois Swenson and husband Wayne, brother-in-law Jack Powers and wife Mary, sister-in-law Sharon Haase and husband Jerry, sister-in-law Liz Powers and many special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and sisters Norma Rubink, Catherine Haukebo and Francis "Tessie" Bergquist.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapel, 5000 West 50th Street (at Highway 100) Edina, MN 55436, (952) 920-3996.

Eleanor Lewontuk

Eleanor E. Lewontuk, 83, Fergus Falls, formerly of Hayward, Wis., and Gary/Crown Point, Ind., died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004.

She was born Dec. 26, 1920, in Calumet City, Ill., to Ernest and Ida (Vandevelde) Schroeder. She graduated from Thornton Fractional High School, where she was voted "Sweetheart." She has been a bookkeeper with Burrell Color Laboratory in Crown Point, was a long-time member of the Foresters, an avid bowler and enjoyed fishing. She was especially known and loved for her "Happy Socks."

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Fergus Falls and a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Hayward. On March 14, 1942, she married John P. Lewontuk.

She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Lee of Pelican Rapids; two grandsons, Jason (Sarah) Leucuta of Lake Park and Todd (Kerri) Leucuta of Pelican Rapids; and one nephew, Robert Schroeder of Hammond, Ind.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Schroeder.

Visitation: Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home

Service: 10 a.m. Thursday at Graceland cemetery Chapel

Leonard Iverson

Leonard "Shorty" Iverson, 80, of Tecumseh, Okla., died Friday, Sept. 3, in Shawnee, Okla.

He was born Jan.13, 1924, in Grant County, to George and Eva Bertha (Schaeffer) Iverson. He spent his early years in Elbow Lake and later lived in Globe and Mesa, Ariz., for 30 years. He resided in Oklahoma for the last few years.

In 1943, he was united in marriage to Genevieve Strain. He worked as a Ford Motor auto salesman for 45 years and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by three daughters: Carolyn (Sam) Dodson of Tucson, Ariz., Linda (Jack) Beene of Macomb, Okla., and Annette (Don) Meyers of Tyler, Texas; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; and one sister: Gladyce (Lyman) Johnson of Apple Valley, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, Donald Iverson; and one granddaughter, Janna Dodson.

Visitation: Thursday, Sept. 9, at the church one hour prior to services

Service: 11 a.m. Thursday at United Lutheran Church of Elbow Lake

Eraine Patrias

Eraine "Pat" Mathew Patrias, 82, Stuart Lake near Vining, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at Lake Region Hospital of Fergus Falls.

He was born March 6, 1922, in Avon, Minn., to Mathias and Sophia (Cantor) Patrias. He grew up in Holdingford, Minn., and attended St. John's Prep School in Collegeville, Minn. Following high school, he attended St. John's University, where he earned his master's degree. He taught at Holdingford, Minn., until 1942, when he entered the Marine Corps. He was a pilot in the Marine Corps, earning the rank of Major. He was married to Cornelia Lynch on June 4, 1947, in Far Hills, N.J. He retired from the Marines July 1, 1964, and returned to teaching. He taught at Benilde High School in Minneapolis, and in 1977 he and Cornelia retired to Stuart Lake, near Vining.

He is survived by his wife, Cornelia; children: Matthew (Nancy) Patrias, Great Falls, Mont., Christopher (Charlotte) Patrias, St. Louis, Mo., Marybrigid (Bruce) Pollin, Minnetonka, Minn., Cornelia (Scott) Larson, Hudson, Wis., Patrick Patrias, Vining, Andrew (Launa) Patrias, Minnetonka, Edward (Marla) Patrias, Bemidji, and Dorothy (Todd) Bradley, Hutchinson; eighteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sisters: Adella Skudlarek, Avon and Angeline Price of Chicago, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: George, Leo and Stanley; and infant sisters: Eleanor and Dorothy.

Visitation: From 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, at the Patrias home- 21389 Mailbox Loop at Stuart Lake- and will continue for an hour prior to Friday services at the church. A Thursday prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Patrias home.

Service: 10:30 a.m. at St. Edward's Catholic Church of Henning

Russell Arnquist

Russell Arnquist, 87, of the Barrett Care Center (formerly of Hoffman), died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at ELEAH Medical Center of Elbow Lake.

He was born Dec. 21, 1916, to Victor and Alma (Nelson) Arnquist on the farm they purchased in Land Township in 1913. He was educated in District 49 and in the Hoffman Public School. He started farming with horses and horse-drawn machinery and advanced to the use of combines and mechanized equipment.

Following his retirement from farming, Russell took interest in his garden, sharing his abundant produce with family and friends. He spent a great deal of time with his sister, Carmen, in Hoffman and enjoyed making recordings of various radio programs. In 1995, he sold the beloved farm he had lived on for nearly 79 years and moved into an apartment in Hoffman. In 1997, he moved to the Barrett Care Center.

He is survived by his brother Willard (Lois) Arnquist of Bellevue, Wash., and their children: Steve, Greg and Julie; as well as cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lester (Fern); and his sister, Carmen and (Clifford) Carlson.

Visitation: Saturday, Sept. 11, from noon until the time of services at the funeral home

Service: 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home
