Harry A. Clark

Harry A. Clark, 66, of rural Aurora died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

He was born May 25, 1934, in Duluth to John and Winifred (McCauley) Clark. He was a graduate of Morgan Park High School and was an avid baseball player. He served the country as a Navy veteran and following the war, worked in Eau Claire, Wis. He married Glorene Bjerke on Feb. 17, 1969, in Cisseton, S.D. He began working for Erie Mining Co. in 1957 and retired from there in 1995 as a supervisor in the tailings basin.

He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and served on the board of deacons and trustees. He was also a member of the Hibbing Masonic Lodge 255 and served as District 8 representative. He was Master of the Biwabik Masonic Lodge and a member of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Patron. He was an avid sports fan and woodcarver, and enjoyed deer hunting and feeding deer near his home on the river.

Survivors include his wife, Glorene; sons, Harry (Marie) Clark Jr. of Minneapolis, Steven Bjerke of San Antonio, Texas, and Craig Bjerke of Hoyt Lakes; daughters, Julieanne Bjerke of Minneapolis, Gwen (Jim) Gorski of Eveleth and Loretta Hanson of Duluth; a brother, Robert (Irene) Clark, of Moorhead; sisters, Vivian North of Cloquet and Mary (Robert) Stephens of Duluth; nine grandchildren, Joseph, Brook, Rhonda, Sheila, Marie, Clinton, Jamie, Bradley and Derek; seven great-grandchildren, Travis, Ashley, Justin, Logan, Machela, Alexia and Jordan; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, John, James and one who died in infancy.

Evelyn Taylor

Evelyn Taylor, 76, of Grinnell, Iowa, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at her home of cancer.

She was born Dec. 12, 1923, in Michigan, N.D., to Edward and Sadie Minette. In 1924, the family moved to Staples, Minn., and they moved to Fertile, Minn., in 1933, where she received her education. In 1942, she married Norman E. Dale in Rindahl, Minn., and the couple made their home in Fertile and Babbitt, before moving to Embarrass. While living in Embarrass, she worked as a seamstress for Arrow Shirt Co., and later worked as a cook at the Four Corners Restaurant. Following the death of her husband, Norman, in 1987, she began spending her winters in Edinburgh, Texas. She met Harry Taylor in Edinburgh, and they married in 1992 in Embarrass. After their marriage, the couple lived in Grinnell, Iowa. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Embarrass and served as chaplain for the Eastern Star in Tower, and was involved in the Senior Legion of the Women of the Moose.

She is survived by her husband, Harry Taylor, of Grinnell, Iowa; seven sons, Norman (Wanda) Dale Jr. of Aurora, Robert Dale and Rodney (Christina) Dale, both of Embarrass, Gary (Kathleen) Dale, and Ronald (Linda) Dale, both of Warroad, Minn., Craig (Candace) Dale of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Wayne (Katrina) Dale of Babbitt; two daughters, Gwen (Craig) Keskitalo, and Tammie Waisanen, both of Embarrass; 23 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marcella Vandervort, of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her first husband; her parents; one sister; two grandchildren.

Bernice A. (Buchwitz) Bandow

Bernice A. (Buchwitz) Bandow, 74, of Eveleth, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 22, 1926, in Grove Lake, Minn., to William and Minnie (Miller) Buchwitz. She married LaVerne Bandow on June 8, 1969, in Milaca, Minn. They lived in Milaca for many years, moving to the Iron Range in 1980. She had worked as a waitress at the Leamington Hotel in Minneapolis and was a homemaker. She was a former member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hibbing.

She is survived by her children, Patrica (Dennis) Daugaard of Montgomery, Minn., Donna (James) Zaiser of Valley Center, Calif., James (Barbara) Allegrezza, Terry Anderson and Betty Allegrezza, all of Eveleth; her grandchildren, Michael Daugaard, William “Billy” Zaiser, LeAnne Zaiser, Michelle Allegrezza, Anthony Allegrezza, Jerome Allegrezza and Daniel Anderson; great-grandchildren, Zacharias and Noah Allegrezza; brothers, Dale (Barbara) Buchwitz and William (Sandy) Buchwitz Jr., both of Hibbing; sisters, Helen Bradley of Florida and Arlene Whitlock of Hibbing; numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, LaVerne, on Feb. 28, 2000; brothers, Norman, Gordon, Harold, John, Albert and Maynard Buchwitz; her parents.

Delberne G. “Stub” Engelstad

Delberne G. “Stub” Engelstad, 66, of Biwabik died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at his home.

He was born April 11, 1934, in Warren, Minn., to Bernard and Pearl (Olbekson) Engelstad. He graduated from the Warren High School. On July 16, 1954, he married Ardelle Scheuring in Milbank, S.D. They moved to the Iron Range in 1954, and he began his career with Evtac in 1968. He retired from Evtac in 1998, after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Community Church in Biwabik.

He is survived by his wife, Ardelle; son, Scott, of Gilbert; daughter, Rhonda (John) Mahovlich, of Gilbert; brothers, William of Hibbing, Charles of Warren, Minn., Leland of Biwabik, Conrad of Hibbing; sister, Mae Grega, of Warren, Minn.; grandchildren, Tim Cunningham, Ryan and Tia Engelstad.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Randy; brothers, Selmer and Russel.

Albert E. ``Al" Reinke

Albert E. ``Al" Reinke, 82, of Superior died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, in St. Mary's Hospital, Superior.

Albert is survived by daughters Patricia Mae (Larry Sr.) Seek and Jane Reinke; a son, Albert W. (Patty); grandchildren Larry Seek Jr. and Brian Seek; great-grandchildren Mathew, Zachary, Miranda and Alex; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation: after 5 p.m. today and service at 11 a.m. Saturday in Downs Funeral Home. Interment is in Greenwood cemetery.

Stephanie Jasmine McNaughton

Stephanie Jasmine McNaughton, 3-month-old infant daughter of George ``Michael" and Linda McNaughton of Banks Avenue, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000.

She is survived by her parents; her twin sister, Makayla; a brother, Cody; maternal grandparents Ralph and Charlotte Nielsen; paternal grandparents Ruth Ann Fry and George C. McNaughton; two aunts; an uncle; and several cousins.

Visitation: noon until the 1:30 p.m. service today in William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, Superior.

Frances A. Peterson

Frances A. Peterson, 93, formerly of Railview Apartments, Proctor died Saturday, June 17, 2000, in Nopeming Nursing Home.

She was born in Lake Elizabeth, Kandigohi County, Minn., and had lived in the Proctor area most of her life. She was employed for many years as a telephone operator, most recently for the city of Duluth in City Hall, retiring in 1972. She had been an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ole and Mary Larson; her husband, Rudolph in 1989; and a grandson, Jason L. Peterson in 1997.

Survivors include daughters Nancy (Ken) Sutton of Lake Nebagamon, Wis., and Bette (David) Sather of Port Washington, Wis.; a son, Peter (Linda) Peterson of Gilbert, Minn.; sisters Ethel Nelson of Marshall, Minn., and Orien Pearson of Duluth; a brother, Orville (Evelyn) Larson of Red Wing, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Proctor. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Avenue W.

Linda A. Matson

Linda A. Matson, 52, of Oswego, Ill., formerly of Wellington Street, Duluth, died Friday, June 16, 2000, in Rush-Copley Medical Center of Aurora, Ill.

She was born in Duluth Jan. 20, 1948, to Eric E. and Alice B. (Nikstad) Matson. Linda was a Denfeld High School graduate. Along with her mother, Linda moved to Oswego in December 1999, to live near her brother.

She was preceded in death by her father, Eric, who died in 1981.

Survivors include her mother, Alice Matson of Oswego; a brother, Roger (Dotti) Matson of Oswego; a nephew, Raymond Matson of Bloomington, Minn.; nieces Denise (Dan) Gill of Cottage Grove, Minn., Melissa Matson and Jennifer Matson both of Oswego; a grandnephew, Sean Gill of Cottage Grove; and many aunts, uncles and cousins in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday and from noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Memorials preferred to the Epileptic Foundation. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Dr. Frederic T. Becker

Doctor active in many hospitals, school of medicine Dr. Frederic T. Becker, 91, of Sun City, Ariz., formerly of Duluth, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2000.

He was born in Red Wing, Minn., Jan. 19, 1909, to Theodore and Lillian Becker. Dr. Becker was a 1927 graduate from West High School in Minneapolis. He graduated in 1933 from the University of Minnesota Medical School with a doctor of medicine degree, specializing in dermatology. Dr. Becker completed his internship at Detroit Receiving Hospital, Detroit, in 1934, and completed his dermatology residency at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Becker's medical practice was interrupted from 1942 to 1946 while he served with the Army Medical Corp during World War II.

Dr. Becker served as a dermatologist on the medical staff for the Duluth Clinic from 1937 until his retirement in 1974. He served two separate terms as Chief of Staff at St. Mary's Hospital and was Chief of Dermatology at various times at St. Mary's Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital and Miller-Dwan Hospital. From 1946 until his retirement, Dr. Becker was a clinical professor of the medicine section at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Becker was a past president of the Minnesota Dermatological Society and also involved with the Chicago Dermatological Society. He was associated with the Society of Investigative Dermatologists, American Academy of Dermatology and published 33 papers in various leading medical journals.

Dr. Becker served as vice-president of the Duluth Junior Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Senior Chamber of Commerce. He was a past director of the Duluth Athletic Club and a past president of St. Paul's Episcopal Church Men's Club. Dr. Becker was an avid UMD hockey fan and an active sportsman, especially golf. In 1982, he scored a hole-in-one, twice, at separate golf courses.

Dr. Becker was preceded in death by his son, Frederic Dynes Becker Feb. 22, 1951.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Christine, of Sun City; a son, Robert W. (Pamela) of Flemington, N.J.; a daughter, Mary (Peter) Wright of Glen Mills, Pa.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial service: 1 p.m. Tuesday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Margaret Lucie Thomas officiating. Private burial for family members only in Forest Hill cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorials sent to Duluth Clinic Foundation or St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Arrangements by Crawford Funeral Service.

Stephen Michael Carnes

Stephen Michael Carnes, 48, of Roseville, Minn., died June 16 at home after a most courageous battle with cancer.

Stephen was born Jan. 9, 1952, in Duluth, where he lived until he was 16, moving then to St. Clair Shores, Mich. He worked for IBM from 1974-1991, transferring back to Minneapolis in 1977. He worked for Burnett Realty from 1991-1993, and Union Pacific, formerly Chicago and Northwestern Railroad since 1993, where he was a locomotive engineer and a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Local 333. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, riding his motorcycle, building and flying radio control airplanes with the St. Paul RC Club. He also held a private pilot's license.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul.

He was the loving father of Jason of Roseville and Deirdre of Minneapolis; grandfather of Paige; remembered always by his father and mother, John and Marilyn (Sternal) of Roswell, N.M.; sisters Nancy and Peg; and longtime companion, Eva; and good friends Barry, Jeff, Shawn and David. Steve will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Monday in Rainville Brothers Chapel, 2301 Central Ave. N.E. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Minnesota Medical Foundation, Fund for Cancer Research, 200 Oak St. S.E., Suite 300, Minneapolis, MN 55455.

Larry R. Johander

Larry R. Johander, 51, of West First Street died Friday, June 9, 2000, in his home.

He was a lifelong resident of Duluth. He graduated from Proctor High School in 1967. He was a former employee at West End Iron and Metal and a member of First Church of God. He enjoyed golfing and stock car races.

He is survived by his father, Leslie Johander of Duluth; his mother, Lillian (David) Beran of Duluth; sons Corey Peterson of Grand Forks, N.D., and Ryan Johander of Duluth; a sister, Jan (Steve) Voltzke of Duluth; a grandson, Corey Jr. ``C.J." Peterson; nephews Brandon, Jeremy and Jonathan Voltzke; a niece Kristina Voltzke; a great-niece, Hope Voltzke; and several aunts, uncles, other family and friends.

Graveside service: 2 p.m. Friday in Oneota cemetery. Gilbert and Loyce Thrush and Sheldon Withrow officiating. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St., Duluth.

Paul Joseph (Wasseanaquad) Grandlouis

Paul Joseph (Wasseanaquad) Grandlouis of East Fifth Street died Thursday, June 15, 2000, in the Franciscan Health Center.

Paul was born June 30, 1927, in Fort William, Ontario, to Alexis and Mary Elizabeth Shabb Grandlouis. Paul lived in Minnesota most of his life, working as a laborer and woodsman. He loved all humanity, especially children. He was a kind and gentle man.

Paul was a member of the Grand Portage Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Grandlouis; and two infant sisters.

He is survived by his daughter, Sandra G. Johnston of Thunder Bay, Ontario; a grandson, Craig Johnston of Winnipeg, Manitoba; a sister, Amelia LeGarde of Duluth; nephews Joseph, Michael and Frank LeGarde; nieces Evelyn Swader of Duluth, Monica White of Hayward, Lou Anne LeGarde of Duluth and Delma Grandlouis of Grand Portage; and 18 beloved grandnieces and grandnephews.

Burial in Grand Portage at a later date. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.
