Doris A. Hoffman

Doris A. Hoffman of Proctor died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.

Doris was born Nov. 6, 1919, to Mabel and Carl Bergstrom in West Duluth. She graduated from Proctor High School in 1937. After graduation, she attended Duluth Beauty College and worked in Rockeville Center, Long Island, N.Y.

On June 7, 1941, she married Wayne E. Hoffman in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor. While her husband served in the Navy during World War II, she moved to Seattle with her infant daughter to work for Boeing Corp. of Seattle, where she helped to manufacture the B-29 Stratofortress. After the war, she returned to Proctor and devoted her life to her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was blessed with a passion for reading, and read everyday and passed her love of books onto her children and grandchildren.

She was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor. She sang in the church choir for 35 years. She was a member of the Friendship Circle, altar guild and served on many church committees.

Doris is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Wayne; her children Sandy (Jim) Parmeter of Proctor, Michael (Linda) Hoffman of Two Harbors and Gretchen (John ``Dan") Norman of Esko; a sister, Dorothy (William) Dunstan of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; grandchildren James (Kim Johnson) Parmeter of Duluth, Joel (Peg) Parmeter, Jennifer Parmeter, Jason and Jared Parmeter, all of Proctor, Joshua Parmeter of Superior, Brian Hoffman of Champlin, Minn.; Jeffrey Hoffman of St. Paul, Theresa Hoffman of Two Harbors, Michael Norman of Menominee, Wis., and Lori (Chad) Nordby of Hibbing; and great grandchildren Elizabeth, Marcus and Maria Parmeter and Emily, Amber and Cayne Compo.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home and 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Proctor, the Rev. Mark Osthus officiating. Burial is in Oneota cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Immanuel Lutheran Church are preferred. Arrangements are by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Sister Marianne St. Marie, OSB

Educator

Sister Marianne St. Marie, OSB, 77, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, in Benedictine Health Center.

She entered the Duluth Benedictine community in 1941 and professed monastic vows in 1943.

Sister Marianne was born in Duluth, where she attended St. Michael's School and girls' Cathedral High School. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education with a minor in social studies from the College of St. Scholastica and took post-graduate courses at Loyola University in Chicago. Sister also participated in numerous workshops in child care, group work and individualized instruction.

During her years of active ministry, Sister Marianne served in various areas. She taught at the following schools in Minnesota: St. Francis, Brainerd; Our Lady of Victory, Minneapolis; and St. James, Duluth, where she was principal and house director as well as teacher. Sister also taught special-education classes at St. Gertrude's, Washington D.C., and was teacher and principal at St. Timothy's in Chicago.

In the field of social work, Sister Marianne was administrator, group living supervisor and coordinator of volunteer services at the former St. James Children's Home, Duluth. For 10 years Sister handled accounts payable in the business office of the College of St. Scholastica and then worked in the Monastery business office until failing health necessitated her retirement in 1991.

Sister Marianne had held membership in the National Conference of Religious; the Minnesota Conference of Religious; the Minnesota Association of Childcaring Institutes; and the Duluth Volunteer Committee. She helped organize the Duluth Association of Childcaring Institutes.

She spent the summer of 1968 working with Mexican-Americans in Harlingen, Texas.

Sister was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Esther (Johnson) St. Marie; and her brother, Paul.

Sister is survived by the sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery; her sister, Mrs. Marion Precord, of Two Harbors; and her brother Willard (Ellen) St. Marie of Denville, N.J.

Wake service: 9:30 a.m. with visitation following until the 11 a.m. celebration of the Mass of Christian burial Saturday in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel, St. Scholastica Monastery. Burial is in Gethsemane cemetery. Memorials to St. Scholastica Monastery are preferred. Arrangements are by Bell Brothers, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel.

Edna Paulina Waksdahl

Edna Paulina Waksdahl, 88, of Grand Avenue died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in Lake Haven Manor.

She was born in Kerrick to Louis and Hilma Hultgren and had been a Duluth resident for over 50 years. She had worked as a seamstress for several Duluth businesses.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bjorne, in 1982.

Edna is survived by sons Donald (Bette) and Robert (Diane), both of Duluth; a sister, Mabel Epperson of Sandstone; grandsons Michael (Laura), Robert (Beth) and Donald Waksdahl; and great-grandchildren R.J. and Marissa Waksdahl.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday and service at 10 a.m. Monday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial is in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements are by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Edith Irene (Juth) Turnquist

Edith Irene (Juth) Turnquist, 88, of Two Harbors died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, in Lakeview Home, Two Harbors.

She was born Feb. 14, 1912, in Two Harbors to Andrew and Anna Juth. When she was 9 months old, she and her parents moved to the country of Finland. At age 18, Edith returned to Two Harbors where she married Arnold Turnquist on Jan. 24, 1931. They celebrated 63 years of marriage prior to his death in November, 1994.

Edith enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, and in earlier years, their Marble Lake cabin and working during spring planting at Anderson's Greenhouse. She was a homemaker and enjoyed baking, cooking, sewing and knitting for her family. She was a member of United Church and active in the women's circle for many years.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; her parents, Andrew and Anna Juth; her daughter, Marian Ferguson; a grandson, Michael Ferguson; and sisters Helmi Nordstrom and Aili Asplund of Finland.

She is survived by her daughters, Carol (Jim) Christensen of Two Harbors and Lynn (Gaylord) Korhonen of Duluth; a sister, Sigrid Nymark of Finland; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Edith will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in United Church, Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery, Two Harbors. Arrangements are by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Donald H. Olson

Donald H. Olson, 77, of Hibbing died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, in Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce M.; children Tim, Terry, Joan (Chris), Dick (Sheri) and Pat (Lisa); and eight grandchildren.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Wesley United Methodist Church, Hibbing. Burial will be in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing. Arrangements are by Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.

Marie S. Charpentier

Marie S. Charpentier, 92, formerly of Hugo, Minn., passed away Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, in Bigfork.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; a son, Howard; an infant daughter, Linda; brothers Benjamin, Hubel, Edward and Dennis Trudeau; and sisters Mable Granger, Dorothy Perrealt, Eleanor Lee and Ellen Phillips.

She is survived by her sons, Richard (Mimi) of France, Francis (Madelyne) of Texas, Gary (Barbara) of North St. Paul, Eugene (Lenore) of McGregor and Gordon (Lorraine) of Wisconsin; daughters Dianne (Roger) Lexvold of Bigfork and Doris (Rick) Schmidt of Pengilly, Minn.; 31 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; sisters Alice McNally of Forest Lake and Ida Mae Peltier of Hugo; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and continues at 9 until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Hugo, Minn. Interment will be in St. John's cemetery. Arrangements are by Mueller Lake Mortuary, St. Paul.

Bernadine E. ``Barney" Anderson

Bernadine E. ``Barney" Anderson, 85, of Cloquet died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000.

Walter G. Tessmer IV

Walter G. Tessmer IV, 17, of Biwabik died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, in St. Mary's Medical Center as a result of complications with asthma.

He is survived by his parents, Walter III and Cheryl; a brother, Christopher; three grandparents; a great-grandmother; two aunts; three uncles; and several cousins.

Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Wednesday in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Aurora, and 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral Thursday in St. John's Catholic Church, Biwabik. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Rose Ann Frahm

Rose Ann Frahm, 93, a longtime resident of Wascott, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home in Duluth.

She was born May 12, 1907, in Czechoslovakia to Joseph and Ann Richecky. Rose immigrated to the United States in 1910. On March 17, 1927, she married William Frahm in Omaha, Neb., and they moved to Wascott in March 1936.

Rose was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Minong and a former member of the Wascott-Minong Lions Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Sr., on July 13, 1984; her parents; brothers Frank and Joseph; and sisters Mary and Agnes.

Survivors include sons, William (Joyce) Frahm Jr. of Wascott and James (Jan) Frahm of North Salem, N.H.; daughters Edith (Gerald) Armstrong of Duluth, Dorothy Caskey of Tampa, Fla., and Carol (Richard) Turcott of Cumberland, Wis.; 20 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and six great--grandchildren.

Visitation: 4-7 p.m. with 6:30 p.m. prayer service Wednesday and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Brown Funeral Home, Minong. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Minong. Interment is in Wascott cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society or the American Cancer Society.

Susanna E. Wilgren

Susanna E. Wilgren, 93, a 80-year resident of Brule, Wis., died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, in Hudson, Wis.

She was born Aug. 15, 1907, in Superior to John and Catherine (Pontii) Beckman. She was married to the late Toivo J. Wilgren. Susanna was a cook in the Douglas County Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Rodney; two sisters; and five brothers.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Marjorie Wilgren of Hudson; grandchildren Wayne (Karyn) Wilgren of Hudson and Cheryl (Dean) Wilgren-Clyne of St. Paul; great-grandchildren Rachel, Jon and Anna Wilgren.

Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Hope Lutheran Church, Oulu, Wis. Burial will bein Everrest cemetery, Waino, Wis. Memorials are preferred. Arrangements are by O'Connell Family Funeral Homes, Hudson, (715) 386-3725.

John A. ``Jack" Larson

John A. ``Jack" Larson, 67, of Chisholm died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, in United Hospital in St. Paul.

He was born Sept. 23, 1933, in Parkville to Anthony and Ida (Lindholm) Larson. He was a 1951 graduate of Roosevelt High School in Virginia and was a lifelong Iron Range resident. He was united in marriage July 28, 1962, in Virginia to JoAnne C. Popovich. Jack retired in 1998 as a locomotive engineer from the DWP/CN Railroad after 46 years of service. He was a 15-year veteran of the National Guard, serving as head mess steward. Jack was an avid outdoorsman and a loving and devoted husband, father and friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Evie Davila; and two nephews.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnne; children Sharon Larson of Tampa, Fla., and Steve (Tammy) of St. Paul; sisters Delores Zier and Lorraine Marsh, both of Kansas City, Kan., and Bernice Kochevar of Duluth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Thursday in Grace Lutheran Church, Chisholm. The Rev. Steve Breitbarth is officiating. Burial will be in Chisholm cemetery. Arrangements are by Rupp Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chisholm.
