Alfred W. Neman

Alfred W. Neman, 87, of West Central Entrance died Friday, April 20, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in St. Paul on Feb. 18, 1914, to Alex and Emma (Hasselblad) Neman. Alfred was raised in Parkland, Wis., and as a teenager moved to Duluth. Mr. Newman was a private first class in the United States Army, serving in the 330th Military Police Escort Guard Section during World War II. On April 19, 1947, he married Mary Anderson in Duluth. Alfred was a self-employed carpenter and following his retirement worked as a television technician.

Alfred was a life member and past commander of the VFW Post 137 and also a life member of the military order of the Cooties P.T. No. 5.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Edwin, in 1991; and a sister, Emily Olsen, in 1949.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; nieces Helen Caswell of International Falls, Shirley Mayer of Tacoma, Wash., and Beverly Olson of Big River, Calif; and special friends, David Birno of Shoreview, Minn., and Marcela and Suzi Gaboury of Pine River, Minn.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Tuesday in Dougherty Funeral Home. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown. Military honors accorded by Duluth VFW Combined Honor Guard. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 East Second St., Duluth.

Elizabeth Morgan-Doyle Anderson

Elizabeth Morgan-Doyle Anderson, of Duluth, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.

She was born in Duluth to George and Eliza (Morrey) Morgan. She was a graduate of Duluth Central High School and the Duluth Business University. Elizabeth had been employed by the Duluth Board of Education for several years and had served as an auditor for John Steelman in the Conciliation Service of the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C.

Elizabeth was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church and its Mary Circle, where she had served as president. She was a member and past matron of the Harriet Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, currently the Zenith Chapter. She was also a member of the Twentieth Century Club and a longtime member and past officer of the Arrowhead Hiking Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lowell P. Anderson, in 2000; and brothers Floyd Morgan in 1909 and Mark Morgan in 1962.

She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth (Peter) Bagley of Duluth; a son, Mark (Laura Phillips) Anderson of Arizona; a sister, Harriett Wilson of LaVerne, Calif; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Forest Hill cemetery Chapel with burial to follow. Memorials are preferred to the Shriners Children's Hospital. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St., Duluth.

Anna I. Meagher

Anna I. Meagher, 97, of 86th Avenue West, Morgan Park, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, in her home.

She was born in Monico, Wis., on Aug. 10, 1903, to parents Jacob and Rose Wagner Lagon. She graduated from high school in 1921. She married Byron Meagher on June 30, 1921, in Enterprise, Wis.

Anna was a Morgan Park resident most of her life. She had worked at Lake Haven Manor for 18 years, "in her younger years, " and was a homemaker most of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron, in 1963; a grandson, Ross Meagher, in 1984; a daughter, Judith Cossalter, in 1962; and six brothers and sisters.

Anna is survived by daughters Nathalie Whalen of Duluth and Jeane LaSalle of Akron, Ohio; sons Richard (Paula) of Morgan Park and William (Joan) of New Port Richey, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Visitation continues noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in United Protestant Church, Morgan Park. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Memorials preferred.

Robert I. Johnson Sr.

Robert I. Johnson Sr., 75, of 86th Avenue West died Saturday, April 21, 2001, in Nopeming Nursing Home.

He was born on March 6, 1926, to Aslew and Hannah Johnson in Duluth. He attended Denfeld High School and was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 10th Mountain Division-Ski Patrol as a rifleman in the Northern Appennines and Po Valley. He married Dorothy Johnson on June 11, 1955, in Duluth. Bob retired from United States Steel after 34 years of service working in Duluth and Torrance, Calif. After his retirement, he worked eight years as a security guard for Pinkerton Security.

He was a former member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, and a member of the VFW, American Legion and Moose Lodge in Duluth and Lynwood, Calif.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Harold, Norman, Arnie and Lawrence; and a sister, Esther Josephson.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Susan (Steve) Salgy of Duluth; a son, Robert Jr. of Cathedral City, Calif; stepsons James (Jackie) Voltzke Sr. of Oliver, Wis., and Richard (Jean) Voltzke Sr. of Duluth; a brother, Gordon (Ruth) Johnson of Modesto, Calif; a sister-in-law, Luana Johnson of Duluth; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Pastor David Tryggestad officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Thomas Neal Lax

Thomas Neal Lax, 58, of Jefferson Street died Friday, April 20, 2001, in his home.

He was born July 8, 1942, in Duluth to Axel Everet and Ina Amelia (Nurkka) Lax. He was a graduate of Duluth Central High School and the Smith Hughes Printing Trade course. He was a printer for the Duluth News Tribune from 1961 until his retirement in November, 2000.

Tom was a member of the CWA, and he enjoyed brook trout fishing up the North Shore.

He was preceded in death by his father, Axel, in 1983; his mother, Ina, on Dec. 11, 1999; a brother, Jack, in 1972; and his former wife, Patricia Jean Anderson, on Aug. 29, 1999.

He is survived by his sons, Timothy (Bonnie) of Lincoln, Neb., and Gary of Duluth; a brother, Richard Lax of Duluth; sisters Alyce (Henry) Zabukover and Mary (Larry) Anderson, both of Duluth; and grandchildren Niomi, Jazmyne and Tyler.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel. Chaplain Stephen Wlosinski officiating. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Memorials preferred to donor's choice. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

G. Russell Olcott

G. Russell Olcott, 89, formerly of West Fourth Street died Monday, April 16, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospice.

He was born July 20, 1911, in Cumberland, Wis., to Guy and Alma (Higlee) Cilibert. He lived inDuluth for most of his life and had worked at Diamond Tool and Horseshoe Co. for 33 years, retiring in 1972. He married Doris E. Brockman on March 16, 1934, in Barnum. He had attended Salem Covenant Church, was a member of Diamond Tool Retirees and a former member of the National Rifle Association. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Doris, in 1987.

Survivors include his children Gene Curtis (Janet) and Steven (Linda), both of Duluth, and Margie (Dick) Randolph of Hermantown; an aunt, Ruth Coggan of Glendale, Calif.; grandchildren Jim (Chris) Olcott, Bonnie (Allan) Boyhtari, Todd, Brian and Michael Olcott, Jason Randolph, Heather (Bryan) Anderson and Danielle Randolph; and great-grandchildren Ross and Glen Olcott, Alissa and Alec Boyhtari and Mackenzie Randolph.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Thursday in Bell Brothers Chapel, the Rev. Paul Anderson officiating. Burial in Bethany cemetery, Hermantown. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W. 624-5745.

Clifford Arthur Sletten

Clifford Arthur Sletten, 87, of 61st Avenue West died Sunday, April 15, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

Clifford was born April 23, 1913, in Fosston, Minn., to Christian and Alma Sletten. He retired from the DTA in 1974 after 30 years of service.

He was a member of Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; a daughter, Janet (Chris) Boyles; a son, Todd (Diane) Sletten; a granddaughter, Erin Kowalik; grandsons Michael Sletten and Erik and Jay Olson; and great-grandsons Jared Even and Jason Olson.

A memorial service celebrating Clifford's life for all friends and relatives at 2 p.m. Monday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 4831 Grand Avenue.

Harry L. Maas

Harry L. Maas, 88, of Springvale Road died Monday, April 16, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.

He was born Sept. 20, 1912, in Fort Ranson, N.D., to Joseph and Anna Marie (Paulson) Maas. His family moved to Maple Plain, Minn., when he was 13 and then to Brunswick, Minn., a small town near Mora. He married Mickey Geraldine Nelson in Henriette, Minn., a town near Braham. They moved to Duluth in 1942.

Harry worked at Barnes-Duluth Shipyard during World War II. He worked as a mechanic for International Harvester and later for E.M. Trucks, from which he retired in 1980. Harry was an outstanding mechanic who loved his work. He could fix anything and enjoyed repairing things for his family and friends.

Harry was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and its Sunshine Club and the Teamster Retirees. He was a former member of Teamsters Local 346, the Good Sam Travel Club and the Holiday Ramblers. He and Mickey spent many happy times traveling alone or with their friends in these clubs. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Earl and Melvin Maas; and a sister, Margaret Howard.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mickey; a son, Tom (Nancy) Maas of Duluth; a daughter, Nora Fryklund of Chicago; brothers Vernon (Hazel) Maas of Canby, Minn., Howard (Marge) Maas of Ogilvie, Minn., and Gerald (Elizabeth) Maas of Northfield, Minn.; a sister, Ruby Felt of Watertown, Minn.; grandchildren Jill Fryklund, Bill Maas, Randy Maas and Michael Maas; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home and continues noon until the 1 p.m. service Friday in Bethany Lutheran Church. Burial in Bethany cemetery at a later date. Memorials preferred to Bethany Lutheran Church.

James Christopher Madigan

James Christopher Madigan, 53, of Birch Valley Road passed away Monday, April 16, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center Hospice after a brief but very courageous battle with cancer. "This is the only battle he ever lost."

He was born March 28, 1948, in Denver to James John and Joan Katherine Paysen Madigan. He grew up in Queens, N.Y., and attended Aviation High School in Queens. He was transferred to Duluth after serving with the Air Force in Thailand during the Vietnam War and had lived in Duluth ever since.

Jim served eight years active duty in the Air Force and was an active member of the 148th Air National Guard in Duluth, having recently been promoted to the rank of master sergeant. During his life he had worked as a millwright at Minntac, was owner and operator of the Wheel 'N Inn Restaurant, and owner and operator of B & J Catering. He was also a sales rep for Met Life and for the past eight years had been a private painting contractor working almost exclusively at St. Mary's Medical Center.

Jim enjoyed life to its fullest, but his main passion was golf. He spent most of his time at Enger Golf Course, in any type of weather, just as long as he was golfing. He spent many seasons hunting duck, grouse and deer with his sons and friends. He designed and created a beautiful water garden that continues to give enjoyment to many people. He took great pride in his gardening. Jim especially loved the Christmas season, spending many days decorating, both indoors and outdoors. He also enjoyed being on the OB-OB softball team. The team was his second family.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jim is survived and will be sadly missed by his fiancee and best friend, Chris Smith; sons Bruce, Jimmy (Kelly Watson) and Cubby, all of Duluth; a brother, Vincent (Judy) Madigan of Holmes, N.Y.; sisters Kerry (Neal Rosenthal) Madigan of Pine Plains, N.Y., and Noreen Madigan of Jackson Heights, N.Y.; his devoted loyal buddy, Grizz; and many, many wonderful friends whom he loved.

Jim was a very kind, generous, sensitive man who touched the lives of many people. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.

A gathering of family and friends held 4-7 p.m. today in Dougherty Funeral Home and continuing 12:30 until the 1 p.m. memorial service Thursday in Salem Lutheran Church, 4715 Hermantown Rd. Military honors accorded by the Grand Forks Air Force Base Honor Guard Team. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St., Duluth.

David A. Gustafson

David A. Gustafson, 59, of Oakley Street died Monday, April 16, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center after a brief illness.

David graduated from Hamline University in St. Paul. He earned a bachelor of divinity at Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, a master of sacred theology at Lutheran Seminary in St. Paul and a Ph.D. in Church History at Union Institute in Cincinnati.

David was known by friends and colleagues as a passionate defender of the Christian faith. He loved his family, was proud of his children, cared deeply for his students and was a shepherd to the people of the parishes he served. Previously, he was pastor of Fristad Lutheran Church in Centuria, Wis., and Grace Lutheran Church in Greensburg, Ind.

He wrote "Lutherans in Crisis: The Question of Identity in the American Republic" and many scholarly articles.

Most recently, David taught theology and church history at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul and was preparing for priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church. For more than twenty years he had been pastor of Peace Lutheran Church in Poplar, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his father, DeVore.

David is survived by his wife, Susan; a daughter, Amy Gustafson of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; a son, Matthew (Michelle) of Superior, Wis.; his mother, Lois of Cokato, Minn.; a sister, Mary (Herman) Cage of Streamwood, Ill; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. Mass of Christian burial Thursday in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Duluth. Downs Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
