Ken Jason Christiansen

Ken Jason Christiansen, 19, of Duluth passed away Friday, April 13, 2001, after a tragic accident.

Ken was born June 23, 1981, in Duluth, where he attended Homecroft Elementary School and Woodland Junior High. He was an honor student at Duluth Central and graduated in 2000. While at Central, Ken was on the track, cross country, and nordic ski teams. After high school, he attended the University of Minnesota Duluth and his goal was to become a biomedical engineer.

He enjoyed water sports including water skiing, tubing and sailing. Ken loved to be around people, especially at the cabin where he felt most at home. He was a genuine and kind person who respected his parents as well as a patient and caring leader to his friends. His great sense of humor was enjoyed by everyone.

He was a source of inspiration to his mother, Carol, who passed away last December after a long battle with cancer. Ken was often told by his dad that he was the best son a father could ask for.

Ken was preceded in death by his mother, Carol E. Christiansen; and his grandparents, Victor and Blanche Krueger and Christ Christiansen.

He is survived by his father, Mark A. Christiansen; sisters Sherry Christiansen and Lisa (Gary) Harma; a niece and nephew, Heather and Luke Harma; his grandmother, Alice (Irene) Christiansen; an aunt and uncle, Karen & Tom Simard, all of Duluth; and a cousin, Kevin Moe of Denver.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Family of God Lutheran Church. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Joan Diehl

Joan Diehl, 76, of Scotch Plains, N.J., died Sunday, April 15, 2001, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

She was born in Duluth and had lived in Duluth, then Port Cartier, Quebec, Canada, before moving to Scotch Plains in 1964.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Judson Pond Diehl in 1998.

She is survived by her children John Diehl of Princeton, N.J., Daniel Diehl of Chester, Calif., and Sally Gentile of Westfield, N.J.; brothers Jim, Frank and Charles Grady; a sister, Susan Mills-Moriarty; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation: 2-5 p.m. today in Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood, N.J. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Scotch Plains Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 325, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076.

Mary Helen Brensike

Mary Helen Brensike, 80, of North 11th Avenue East died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in her home.

Mary was born April 6, 1921, in Crested Butte, Colo. She was a graduate of Crested Butte High School and married Charles (Bud) Brensike there on July 10, 1939. Mary and Charles moved to Duluth in 1942.

She was a member of the former St. Anthony's Church, its Rosary Society and funeral lunch committee. She was a member of St. Benedict's Church, member and past president of the St. Anthony School and Cathedral PTA. Mary was an avid bowler for more than 30 years and played cards with the Wednesday afternoon card club for more than 40 years.

She was preceded in death by her son, Richard in 1959, and her husband, Charles (Bud) in 1994.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Kay (Byron) Swanson of Duluth; granddaughters Cindy (Tom) Jamar, Wendy (John) LeNeau and Sherry (Todd) Schad; and great-grandchildren Evan and Sarah Jamar, Marc LeNeau and Ethan Schad.

Visitation begins at 4 p.m. Thursday with 7 p.m. rosary in Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in St. Benedict's Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Memorials to donor's choice. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Richard L. Johnson

Richard L. Johnson, 56, of Mora, formerly of Duluth, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, in Mora, Minn.

He was born Feb. 23, 1945, in Biwabik to Walter and Martha (Williams) Johnson. He lived in Rice Lake Township and attended Central High School in Duluth. He served in the Army from 1963 until 1966.

Dick was bricklayer for 33 years and was employed in Duluth, Minneapolis, Florida and Colorado. He retired in March of 2000. Dick and his wife, Lynn, and family have lived in Mora for the past eight years.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn; sons Todd of Somerset, Wis., Terry of Florida and Steven and David, both of Mora; daughters Trudy and Sara, both of Mora; sisters Carolyn Johnson of Duluth, Grace (Bruce) Wells of Duluth and Janice Ratajek; brothers Bill (Nancy) of Duluth and Randy (Kathy) of Duluth; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services: 1 p.m. today in Hillman Baptist Church, north of Mora. Arrangements by Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home, Mora.

Lee L. Burnes

Lee L. Burnes, 74, of West Morgan Street died Sunday April 22, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center with his loving family at his side.

He was born May 3, 1926, in Minneapolis to Ernest Fredrick and Cynthia (Moore) Burnes. He graduated from Breckenridge High School in Breckenridge, Minn. He married Jane Sprenger on Feb. 11, 1953, and they moved to Duluth where he worked for Mathison Tire and Firestone. Later he was co-owner of Royal Garage in Duluth. He went to work for Como Oil until retiring in 1989. He was a veteran of the Marine Corp, serving in the Korean War at the Chosin Reservoir.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Duluth Heights. He was a life member of VFW Post 137 in Duluth and a former member of Moose 505. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and watching sports.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, James Burnes.

He is survived by his wife, Jane of 48 years; children, Debbie Ojala of Duluth, Robert (Patty) Burnes of Duluth, Vicki (Mike) Nelson of Gresham, Ore., and Brenda (Ed) Simon of Duluth; grandchildren Jim and Rick Ojala, Sarah and Brian Nelson, Ed and Kimberly Simon, and Pam and Michelle Burnes; a brother, Fred (Merle) Burnes of Duluth; a sister, Geraldine (Roger) Reger of Minneapolis; and a special cousin, Beverly Moore of Fergus Falls, Minn.

Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Wednesday with 5 p.m. wake prayers in Dougherty Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial at 1 p.m. Thursday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Duluth Heights. Military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Combined Honor Guard. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second Street.

Clinton "Clint" Jerome Witzman

Clinton "Clint" Jerome Witzman, 54, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2001, in his home on Island Lake.

He was born July 14, 1946, in Roseau, Minn., to Joe and Shirley (Bergsnev) Witzman. He attended St. Jean's Catholic School and was a 1964 Duluth Central High School graduate. He was a former member of the 477th Army Reserve-Medical Detachment. On March 15, 1969, he married Kaye Ann Boyle in Duluth. Mr. Witzman has been employed with Qwest Telephone Co. as a cable technician for the past 31 years and was a member of the Communications Workers of America.

Clint was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved being outdoors. Clint's family, friends and his home on Island Lake were his life.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley; and a brother, Donald.

Survivors include his wife, Kaye; sons Eric (Rhonda) of Duluth and Jeremy of Duluth; his father, Jo of Duluth; sisters Barbara (Dwight) Myrher of Bemidji and Beverly Witzman of Duluth; his mother-in-law, Isabelle Boyle of Duluth; a sister-in-law, Mary (Greg) Merritt of Duluth; nephews Chad (Joanna) Myrher, Cory Myrher, Nathan Merritt and Cammeron Merritt; and a niece, Kimberly Myrher.

Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Wednesday in Dougherty Funeral Home where the funeral will be held on Thursday. Time of service to be announced in Wednesday's funeral notice. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Steven M. Golberg

Steven M. Golberg, 38, of Raleigh, N.C., died Friday, April 20, 2001, in Granville County Hospital.

He was born Nov. 6, 1962, to Lawrence and Margaret (Harrison) Golberg in Las Vegas. Steven graduated from Yeshiva High School in Skokie, Ill., in 1979. He also graduated from Case Western Reserve College in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1984 with a bachelor of science in computer science and engineering. He was an intern with IBM for two years during college and later joined IBM full-time in Raleigh working as a consulting I/T specialist and supporting networking and systems management in retail.

Steven enjoyed reading, his world travels, bull riding and sports.

He was preceded in death by his father, Col. Lawrence H. Golberg; his paternal grandparents, Marvin and Ida Golberg; and his maternal grandfather, Chester Harrison.

Steven is survived by his son, Benjamin L. Golberg of Raleigh; his mother, Margaret Golberg of Columbus, Ohio; his sister, Susan L. Golberg of Columbus; his grandmother, Ada C. Dye of Sunbury, Ohio; the Charney family of Minneapolis; the Cohen family of Duluth; the Golberg family of Sacramento, Calif., the Harris family of Lincolnwood, Ill., the Young family of Laguna Beach, Calif., and many other relatives and close friends.

Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday in Temple Israel. Burial in Shaara Tzedeck cemetery, Hermantown. Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

John Michael Dosen-Windorski

John Michael Dosen-Windorski, infant son of Amanda and Thomas Dosen-Windorski, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, surrounded by his family in St. Mary's Medical Center.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, John and Merle Dosen of Grand Rapids; paternal grandparents Mike and Kathie Windorski of Aitkin; maternal great-grandparents Tony and Eva Dosen of Chisholm and Laura Kuitunen of Hibbing; paternal uncle Matt (Jessica) Windorski of Crosby; and maternal aunt Anna Dosen of Duluth.

Private remembrance will be held. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.

Betty Marie Nisula

Betty Marie Nisula, 78, of Duluth passed away peacefully Friday, April 20, 2001, in the Chris Jensen Nursing Home following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Aug. 1, 1922, in Minneapolis and was a lifelong resident of Duluth.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary (John) Baier of Tucson Ariz., a grandson, Rick (Katie) Wagner of Virginia Beach, Va.; granddaughters Stephanie, Stacy and Julie Baier of Tucson; a sister, Marcie (Leonard) Soderquist; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Betty is loved and remembered for her cheerfulness, generosity and having a strong work ethic. She will be deeply missed and always remembered.

Memorial service will be at a later date at Glad Tidings Assembly of God. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery.

Thelma Elna (Landberg) Nelson

Thelma Elna (Landberg) Nelson, 76, formerly of Eastview House and Tioga Street, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, in the Waters of Park Point Health Care Center.

Thelma was born in Ashland to Gust and Naomi (Holmgren) Landberg. She grew up on her family's dairy farm near Ino, Wis., and attended schools in Ino and Benoit, Wis. She graduated from Ashland High School in 1942. Thelma was schooled as an LPN through Miller-Dwan and worked as an LPN at the Bethel for Women and Aftenro Home until her retirement. Thelma enjoyed doing needle work and traveling with her husband. She was a member of the Gideons Auxiliary and North Shore Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Carl F., in 1981; and her parents.

Surviving are two sisters, Sylvia (Stanley) Lindholm of Duluth and Delores (Edward) Nolte of Lillian, Ala.; a niece, Janet (Scott) Sorochak of Duluth; a nephew, James Nolte of Glenellen, Alaska; a great-nephew, Kevin Sorochak of Duluth; six grandchildren and several great- grandchildren.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Wednesday in North Shore Baptist Church, 15 S. Lakewood Road. Burial in Mason cemetery, Mason, Wis. Memorials to the church or the Gideons would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

Linda L. (Lanthier) Zylka

Linda L. (Lanthier) Zylka, 55, of Piedmont Heights died Monday, April 9, 2001, of cancer, in her home with her loving family by her side.

She was born and spent all her life in Duluth. She was a 1963 graduate of Denfeld High School. Linda was employed as a secretary in Garon Knitting Mills, Lake County Travel Service and spent 26 years with the Duluth school system ISD 709, where she belonged to Local Union 66. In the school system, Linda worked with learning disabled children in Title One at St. Jean's, Lincoln Elementary, Nettleton Elementary and Laura MacArthur Elementary. She loved children and her job and made a substantial difference in the lives of many children.

She was a former Girl Scout leader with the Northern Pine Association, and was active in the Youth Hockey Association and Duluth Womens Bowling Association. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Parish. Linda was an avid NASCAR fan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest J. and Lola Mae (MacKowsky) Lanthier; her mother-in-law, Ella Mae V. (LeFaive) Zylka; and her sister-in-law, Nona Mae Zylka.

Surviving are her husband, Raymond; a son, Floyd (Caroleen) of Duluth; a daughter, Tonya (Robert) Gray of Eau Claire, Wis.; grandchildren Raymond, Caileigh, Samuel and Malaurie; a sister, Judith (George) Golds of Panama City, Fla.; brothers Robert (Claudia), Steve (Ruth) and Mark (Sandy) Lanthier, all of Duluth; a brother-in-law, Chuck (Chris) Zylka of Hermantown; her father-in-law, Floyd B. Zylka of Hermantown; a special friend, Mary Lanthier of Tampa, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. with 6 p.m. wake prayers today in Bell Brothers Chapel. Visitation continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Memorials to the Laura MacArthur Library would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.
