Lillian A. Taylor

Lillian A. Taylor, 87, of Duluth passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in Lake Haven Manor.

She was born Dec. 14, 1913, in Hurley to William and Agda (Peterson) Johnson. Lillian married Everett C. Taylor in Duluth, in 1930. She was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 22 years.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Everett, in 1968; sisters Linnea Michaelson, Elma Larson and Eda DeRosier; a brother, Clarence Johnson; granddaughters Rebecca Brockway and Theresa Mellin.

She is survived by a son, Roland (Jacqueline) Taylor of Duluth; a daughter, Gwen (Tom) Brockway of New Brighton, Minn.; a sister, Lorraine (Charles) DeMarte of Duluth; a brother, Willmer (Delia) Johnson of Hurley; grandchildren Scott (Kathy) Taylor of Hibbing, Randolph Taylor of Duluth, Kim (Greg) Thompson of Cromwell, Michael (Joni) Brockway, Brenda Berry, Cynthia (Mark Sr.) Will, Timothy (Jacqueline) Brockway, Bradley Brockway and Stephen Brockway; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Burial in Oneota cemetery, Duluth. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary, 514 E. Third St., Duluth.

Leonard Lind

Leonard Lind, 70, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2001, in Lancaster, Calif.

He was born May 19, 1930, in Duluth. He retired from Fairchild Stratos, Manhattan Beach, Calif., at age 55. Leonard's family came first in his life. He was a simple man whose only pleasure seemed to be making others happy. His family treasured him and his grandson says it best, " 'Papa' was the most honest and kind man I had ever known and all who knew him loved him." Some men think medals and many material things are important, but Leonard thought the love of his family was most important of all.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce; daughters Pam (Dan) Simpson of Spokane, Wash., and Debra Von-Lindh and son-in-law Darrell Brown, both of California City, Calif.; grandchildren Shawn Capko and Danielle Simpson; brothers Hjalmer (Marion) of Orlando, Fla., and Jerry of Oceanside, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Jimmy Luhm of Duluth; a sister-in-law, Sally Sturm of Duluth; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life was held March 17 in his home. Interment at a later date in Spokane. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Leonard's name to Faith Community Church, 39100 10th St. W., Palmdale, CA 93551. Arrangements by Halley-Olsen-Murphy Memorial Chapels & Crematory, Palmdale.

Frank P. Taran

Frank P. Taran, 78, longtime resident of Duluth passed away Thursday, March 15, 2001, surrounded by his family.

He was manager of Gershgol's Grocery, operations manager for the Goldfine's Discount Stores and the owner/operator of Taran's Food Market.

He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II aboard the USS Jarvis. Frank was a former president of American Legion Lakeside Post. He retired to Minneapolis in 1994.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Eva; a sister, Faye Hanna; a brother, Oscar Taran; brother-in-law, Lou Fingerote and sisters-in-law Joyce Fingerote and Lucille Taran; his children and their spouses, Barry and Susan of St. Louis Park, Dale and Roberta of Duluth, Stuart and Nancy of Rancho Mirage, Calif., Carrie and Ricky Bloomfield of Plymouth, Minn.; "Zaidi" to his dear grandchildren Jess, Matthew, Adam, Rachel, Rebecca, Dusty, Joey, Jordan, Jared and Sam. He will also be missed by many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Service: 1 p.m. today in Temple Israel, 1602 E. Second St. Shiva is 7 p.m. today at 4615 Otsego St. Memorials preferred to American Cancer Society or American Lung Association. Arrangements by Hodroff & Sons, Minneapolis (612) 871-1234.

Rosemary E. Van Horn (nee Huberty)

Rosemary E. Van Horn (nee Huberty), 86, died peacefully Friday, March 16, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.

She was born in Duluth Feb. 20, 1915, to Edward and Rose (Daoust) Huberty. She attended St. James Catholic Church and Denfeld High School. During World War II, Rosemary was employed by Butler Shipbuilding in Riverside. She retired in 1977 after many years of dedicated service at St. Mary's Medical Center. At the time of her retirement, she was head of the Central Supply Department.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Andy Van Horn; and a brother, Charles Kirkwood.

Survivors include a son, Harvey Van Horn of Duluth; a sister, Lois Huberty Hall of Duluth; nieces Suzanne Hall Bard of Aurora, Ill., Mary Kirkwood Kohlbry of Duluth and Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Jane Kirkwood of St. Paul; and a nephew, Stephen Hall of Duluth.

Private services: Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Hulda Devlin

Hulda Devlin, 94, formerly of 38th Avenue West and West Fourth Street died Friday, March 16, 2001, in the Waters of Park Point health care facility.

She was born April 24, 1906, in Duluth to Oscar and Lena (Rask) Anderson. She married Fred Devlin. She was a clerical worker for Fitger's Brewery for 16 years and for Roy Halvorson Tree Co. for 40 years, retiring in 1982 at age 76. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and its Tabitha Circle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred Devlin in 1983; a brother, Clarence Anderson; and sisters Helen Peterson and Myrtle C. Anderson.

She is survived by a nephew, Ryan (Sharon) Anderson of Eveleth; grandnieces Cacia and Shaylyn Anderson of Eveleth; a sister-in-law, Elaine Anderson of Superior; and a cousin, Ralph Rask of Duluth.

Services are pending. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Harry Golden

Harry Golden, 91, of East Fourth Street died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

Harry was born in Duluth, graduated from Duluth Central High School and was an Army veteran, serving in France during World War II.

He was a member of the Adas Israel Congregation and a former member of the VFW. Harry was the former owner of the Towne Pump. He is the last survivor of his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Rossel (Karon) Golden; and brothers and sisters.

Harry is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Service: 1 p.m. Thursday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel. Burial in Adas Israel cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

Irene C. Tahtinen

Irene C. Tahtinen, 83, of Duluth died Sunday, March 11, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.

She was born Nov. 25, 1917, to Christian and Karen Langseth. She graduated from Denfeld High School. She worked in production at Diamond Tool, Garon's Kniting Mill, Cook Home Laundry and retired from there in 1983. She married Martin Tahtinen Dec. 1, 1951.

Irene was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Degree of Honor Society. She participated in two cancer research studies to help find a cure for others. She loved visits with her family, spending time at the cabin on Stone Lake and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin in 1981; her parents; and a sister, Margaret (Lester) Erickson.

Irene is survived by a son, Jeff (Anne) of Duluth; a daughter, Karen (Joseph) Houle of Duluth; grandchildren Jason Houle, Melissa (Andy) Ramsey, Melanie Houle, Katie Tahtinen and Eric Tahtinen; a great-granddaughter, Mandilin Ramsey; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She will always be remembered for her generosity and thoughtfulness for others.

Memorial gathering: noon until the 1 p.m. memorial service Thursday in Zion Lutheran Church, the Revs. John Reppe and James Nelson officiating. Spring interment in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

John A. "Bud" Mayberry

Bud Mayberry, 73, died Thursday, March 2, 2001, of cardiac arrest following a brave, 13-year battle with cancer.

Born in 1927 in Duluth, Bud retired in 1986 from a 23-year career with the Kansas City Power & Light Co., most recently serving as corporate officer and that company's vice president of marketing. Mr. Mayberry joined KCP&L; following sales and marketing positions with CBS Electronics, Sylvania Electric and Raytheon Co.

Before retiring, Bud received Kansas City's Marketing Professional of the Year award, adding to numerous personal and professional achievements.

Outside of professional pursuits, Mr. Mayberry enjoyed and excelled at farming, cattle-raising, horsemanship and dog breeding. He was an active leader in the Y Indian Guides, Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, 4-H Club, Boy Scouting and is an alumnus of Northwestern University.

A World War II Navy veteran and an avid outdoor sportsman, Bud continued to enjoy hunting, fishing, camping, cycling and golfing well into his retirement in Oceanside, Calif. His love of the outdoors will be fondly remembered by business colleagues, who on many occasions saw Bud leave his executive desk at the power and light company to climb utility poles and repair storm-damaged power lines during the company's labor strikes.

Bud is survived by his brothers, Russell and Robert; his children, John, David and Thomas; and grandchildren John, Megan, Carolyn, Elizabeth, Maureen and Emily.

The family requests that any donations in Mr. Mayberry's memory be made to the Medical Education and Research Foundation, c/o Dr. Henri Colt, and mailed to Henri Colt, M.D., director, Interventional Pulmonary Services, UCSD Medical Center-La Jolla, 9310 Campus Point Drive, La Jolla, CA 92037.

Patricia McDevitt Cosgriff

Patricia McDevitt Cosgriff, 81, of Midtown Manor died Thursday, March 8, 2001, in her daughter's home.

She was born Aug. 26, 1919, to John and Mildreth (Duffy) McDevitt in Duluth. Patricia married Daniel Lee Cosgriff on June 17, 1940, in Duluth and was a lifelong Duluth resident.

She worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for more than 15 years. Patricia was an accomplished pianist and organist and enjoyed playing both instruments.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel in 1946; sisters, Mary, Kay, Dorthey and Joan; and a brother, John.

Patricia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister and aunt who is survived by daughters Kathleen (Richard) Robinson and Diane (Ray) Klosowski, both of Duluth; grandchildren Tricia (Matthew) Klosky of Bloomington, Ill., Brett (Lisa) Klosowski of Duluth and Shane (Kelly) Klosowski of Burnsville, Minn.; a great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Marie Klosowski of Duluth; brothers Richard McDevitt of Washington, William McDevitt of California and Robert (Beverly) McDevitt of Duluth; a special sister-in-law, Gladys McDevitt of Duluth; and many nieces, nephews and cousins of whom she was very fond.

Special thanks goes to St. Luke's Hospice nurses who lovingly cared for Patricia during her short illness.

Memorial service: 3 p.m. Saturday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Inurnment in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Linda Susan Tarnowski

Linda Susan Tarnowski, 49, of Chambersburg Avenue died Sunday, March 11, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

She was born June 28, 1951, in Long Beach, Calif. She moved to Duluth in 1978 and had worked the past 15 years at the University of Minnesota Duluth as a consultant in financial aid.

Linda loved to craft. She made many quilts, afghans and macrame.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Doris Dobson in 1996.

She is survived by sons Christopher (Annie) Owens of Nephi, Utah, Arthur (Lisa) Gustafson of Victoria, Texas, Timothy Sarko and Patrick Tarnowski, both of Duluth; grandchildren Wade and Travis Owens and Emily Gustafson; her father, James Dobson of California; and sisters Gloria Sullivan of Houston and Cathy Dobson of Coarse Gold, Calif.

Visitation: 4-7 p.m. today and service 11 a.m. Thursday in Dougherty Funeral Home. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St., 727-3555.

Irving West

Irving West, 77, of Duluth passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth.

He was born Oct. 21, 1923, in Ironwood to Carl and Clara Elvira (Olson) West. Irving served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. On June 24, 1949, Irving married Lou Stockland. He worked for U.S. Steel as a locomotive engineer for 27 years. Irving was proud to be a licensed pilot and a member of the Private Pilot's Association.

Irving was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lou; her daughter, Sandy Stockland; their son, Larry (Polly and her daughter, Jill) West; a sister, Marjorie Flynn; granddaughters Amber and Mara West; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 3-7 p.m. Thursday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 514 E. Third St. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.
